Premier League #3: Everton 2 - 2 Manchester Utd
Everton host Manchester United in the Premier League on Sunday for their third game of the new season.
But it looked like Man Utd had done enough despite a brilliant strike from Tyrique George, with goals from Mbueno and Sesko about to give them the win. That was until the last kick of the game, a tremendous strike from debutant Ainsley Maitland-Niles.
The mood of the Blues fans today will be febrile, to say the least, with anger at the hierarchy over the transfer window fiasco giving way to possible expressions of support for the players and the team we do still have, with David Moyes left to pick them up and put them together into something that can challenge the mighty Red Devils.
Team News
Jack Grealish and Ainsley Maitland-Niles have not been sufficiently integrated into Moyes's squad so both are only on the bench where Braiden Graham comes in... but will he get time on the pitch?
The visitors are unchanged from last week's win over Ipswich.
First Half
Kick-off by Dewsbury-Hall was a bit different, not going back to Pickford immediately. But Barry was bashed into by Maguire who hurt his nose inside the first minute. It was 3 minutes more before Maguire jogged off after treatment and the game resumed.
Everton worked the ball around but could not penetrate effectively. A simple build saw Shaw easily get behind Rohl and Fernandes smashed the cross off the Everton bar with Pickford nowhere near it.
Everton got forward and George's cross was deflected up in the air, Barry trying to trap and falling over, The Blues fans demanding a penalty but there was no foul on him.
Everton repelled another attack but George was cynically pulled back by Dalot, an obvious yellow card... but only a talking to by John Brookes. A terrible giveawy by Dewsbury-Hall saw Armstrong strong-arm Fernandes, and he got a straight yellow... Sly Six favouritism???
Everton were doing well to win the ball back but lacked confidence in what to do with it, eventually punting it up in the direction of Armstrong, playing where you'd expect Barry to be. Armstrong did well to win the ball back but the possession pathway only led all the way back to Jordan Pickford.
Man Utd countered and Tielemans fired at Pickford from a long way out. After a walking-pace build-up, a Fernandes shot was deflected up and behind, Dalaot smacked the cleared corner back into the crowd, Tarkowski blocking.
A really scary Man Utd move saw Rashford dance around Rohl and play it across for Cunha to sidefoot his shot over the bar. Everton countered with a great pass out from Armstrong to Rohl, but he slowed up, passed back to Armstrong, who would not shoot, and back to Dewsbury-Hall, who was closed down. Chance lost.
Shaw and Rashford again showed up Rohl's weakness at right-back, but this time no clear chance developed. Garner won the ball back well but Everton were far too tentative in possession, going all the way back to Pickford eventually.
The Blues built again, but far too slowly, Barry dropping deep. Mykoleno almost got a good cross in to Barry but it was blocked and the Red Devils were building slowly again. A tremendous Rashford cross was read superbly by Branthwaite.
Everton got forward quicker this time but the cross in didn't find Barry. Dewsbury-Hall put Lammens off and Everton almost profited but again were too hesitant with the second and third balls.
Johnson tried to stop Cunha coming down the left side again, and took his man out with a poor tackle: yellow card. The free-kick was cleared, also the workaround, but Everton were living very dangerously.
Rohl and Mykolenko swapped sides, but they were still given the runaround, Man Utd winning a corner. Branthwaite fell awkwardly but Armstrong was wrestling a little.
Mbueno fouled George; Garner's free-kick flicked on and behind by Barry. Everton won a steal in midfield, but Dewsbury-Hall's low cross was poor.
Everton did get the ball back, Barry trying a shot that was blocked back to him, and then did an utterly bizarre non-cross! But a fabulous cross in from Rohl, Barry got into the right spot but could only head powerfully over the bar.
Armstrong tried a clever one-two with Barry that failed. Man Utd attacked and Mykolenko did well, back on the left. Everton had a much better spell, but still did not get close enough for a decent shot, winning only a long throw. It eventually fell to Branthwaite but he could only shoot straight at Lamens.
Man Utd streamed forward with a tremendous move at the end, firstly a superb tackle from Branthwaite on Rashford to stop him shooting, but the ball went out to Shaw, his shot blocked out again by Branthwaite. Absolutely first class defending from the big guy. Half-time: 0 - 0.
Second Half
No changes after the break. Mbueno was allowed to run in from the right side and drive beyond Pickford into the far corner. Shocking. 0 - 1.
Rohl tried to run the ball out of defence but lost it. Dewsbury-Hall put in a great cross but Johnson seemed to duck underneath it rather than leap to head it in. Mykolenko had a shot wide left that would have been better as a cross.
Barry spun his man and looked to advance into the area but thought he could play in Johnson who was easily stalled.
Everton built slowly again, Graner standing on the ball, George playing it back... but eventually he went forward, Dewsbury-Hall playing in Johnson, his shot was blocked and Armstrong's shot also blocked.
But George ran at Dalot again and won a corner, although nothing came of it.
But Armstrong played a great ball through Johnson whose shot was deflected just over the bar. Man Utd surged forward from the corner and it needed a great rearguard tackle from George.
Johnson picked up the ball and drove all the way to the penalty area before inexplicably giving up the ball!
Barry did really well to get int the area but his shot was blocked to Dewsbury-Hall who could only pass it back to Lamens.
Rashford drove in and seemed to eat everyone except Branthwaite, and it needed a great tackle by Tarkowski on Cunha, who went down and wanted a penalty. As Rohl broke away, a really cynical foul by Shaw got him a yellow card.
Rohl rolled Rashford and he saw yellow. From the free-kick, Fernandes sliced his shot well high and wide. Another Man Utd surge saw Tielemas's shot blocked behind by Tarkowski. The corner saw Shaw drive his shot wide and Johnson was replaced by Grealish.
His first involvement saw Mykolenko force a corner, played short for Grealish, Dewsbury-Hall rolling a shot to Lamens, nowhere near a hard enough strike.
Everton won a free-kick in midfield as Carrick made a couple of changes, Garner's lopping lob bouncing off the top of Tarkowski's head.
Everton worked their way forward down the left, Dewsbury-Hall's strike hitting Barry, Armstrong's weak shot dribbling behind. A poor mistake by Garner gave the ball away but Mbueno was stopped. Hackney replaced Rohl.
Garner moved to right-back but then went down hurt after trying to win the ball, Maitland-Niles coming on for him, a right-back at right-back!
Grealish tried to beat Dalot but lost the ball. Fernandes went down in the centre circle after Tarkowski clipped his foot but the referee missed it, Maguire booked for protesting.
Grealish brilliantly drew the foul from Dalot, yellow card! Free-kick glanced on by Branthwaite forcing a punched save from Lamens. But a terrible effort from Mykolenko. But Hackney got the ball out to Tyrique George (83') and he absolutely lashed a screamer past Lamens, a fantastic strike to put Everton back level.
Man Utd tried to respond, with the cross Sesko glancing his unmarked header wide. Another Man Utd attack, Shaw beating Maitland-Niles, and Sesko's header from his cross not fully saved by Pickford as it bobbled over the line.
Grealish tried to drive in a shot but it was blocked as 5 minutes of added time were shown. Barry got the ball through to George but he was yards offside and Lamens pushed his shot behind this time.
Grealish tried to work his way in again, setting up George, but back out to Hackney and his shot was driven over.
Everton attacked again, Dewsbury-Hall winning a very late corner, but it was cleared; however, it was somehow worked around until it was rolled way out to the advancing Ainsley Maitland-Niles (90+6'), who belted an absolutely gorgeous curling strike that Lamens could only watch helplessly fly into the net behind him. What another fantastic strike.
Incredibly, it finished 2 - 2.

There'll be space for Johnson to run into behind Shaw, who loves to get forward. My money is on a goal for us coming from there.
Look forward to seeing Grealish in the 2nd half, happy to see Armstrong retain his place as he has started the season well. Decent midfield options from the bench, let's hope Barry is at peak fitness!!

I suppose the nearest to a surprise there is possibly Johnson being preferred to Hackney and Graham on the bench.
Would have liked to have seen O'Brien next to Branthwaite rather than Tarkowski but I suppose that will only come about with an injury unfortunately.

I wish we could cross and shoot. Some good play at times but weak crosses and nobody ever shoots.

A perfect example of inconsistent refereeing. Dalot gets away with persistent pulling an opponent back while Armstrong gets carded for a lesser arm around a player and later Johnson carded for a tackle completely without malice while United players again get off with shirt pulling.
We seem to get as far as the edge of the opposition penalty box and run out of ideas and players in the box whereas United quite often look to have at least 2 or 3 choices, we have to get men in the opposition's penalty area even if it's just for the cross and hope.

A fantastic performance for the team, with better finishing KDH could have had two or three.
George and Hackney are going to be great signings
It just shows with 3/4 players in the window and were right up there, so frustrating.
Very pleased for the Manager and the long suffering fans who have been through the ringer of emotions over the last few weeks

Worth the 4m for that goal !!
Showed real determination & togetherness, impressed with Hackney when he come on, made a difference.
Sometimes advertisty brings you together, players show more, run more, they really wanted it today, even if we lacked quality at times, they made up for it in effort.

I thought Branthwaite was immense, Hackney and Grealish made a huge difference and two brilliant goals. I hope Garner was fatigue and not his hamstring.

United got an early goal second half but why did George jump out of the way to let the scorer through, if he runs into you then let him. George then made up for it with a great finish after Johnson seemed to duck under a chance and then with another forgot to shoot and just as I thought we had gotten away with a draw Tarkowski seemed to fail to get off the ground and Pickford seemed at less than his best with the save. Then when it looked all over Maitland-Niles scored possibly the best goal of the game.
Didn't understand Moyes substitution of Rohl who looked to be having a good game when Garner just doesn't look fit enough which is something we might be glad of given the equalizer, but Hackney must surely be a starter and O'Brien must replace Tarkowski if Moyes doesn't play favourites.
A lot to be sorted out on that display.

Yes it's a good point, but we should be putting these teams like United and Bournemouth to the sword. I don't know what Moyes' tactics were in the first half: we gave their midfield too much space, and we strolled around as if we were 3 up.
Trademark miss by Barry - as predicted that man will lose us a ton of points this season - lost us 4 points already in last 3 games!

I maybe think Jordan tried to make the save look good instead of just keeping it out, but maybe not. The lad saves us time and time again, so the odd fuck up can’t even be lambasted…. But time after time we concede from crosses around the 6 yard box. Could Jordan not have came for the cross?… either way, fuck them scruffy man twats! Absolute worst dressed bunch of people ive ever known. Every one of them dresses like an absolute c**t…. COYB!! Spurs are getting the Moyes sausage next week… Barry’s link up play is looking much better but his finishing isn’t prem level. Jackie G changed the game for us just by being an outlet… and we all know the league is bent. Dalot should have been booked early, then Brennan had 2 close offsides that they didn’t even show a single replay of either one. Corrupt as fuck which makes the result even sweeter!

That may have been the way to use Grealish, last 30 with tired defenders hopefully on a card. The problem was the lack of a ball carrier first half. Long balls to Barry are wasted efforts. We have enough in midfield and AMN to run some sort of overload routine.
The quality of the goals in a comeback effort is enough to convince me of a new era. This is a different collection of players that have some real determination and grit. Armstrong chasing down the backpass to their keeper in the 94th showed me that.

Everton made United look a much better team than they are and when we attacked more in the second half it showed how poor they were defensively. Two excellent goals got us what could be a very valuable point.
Good games from Hackney when he came on and he urged some good attacking play with his energy and passing, provided the assist for the first goal well struck by George and was involved in the second goal.
Maybe it was the tactics but we looked poor passing and picking up the second balls in midfield but those two goals will give fans some belief that the season might not be as bad as we think it could be.

The frustrating thing is that we are in fact a pretty decent side and a little bit of shrewd investment would have transformed us into a team that could challenge for CL places.

What a fantastic result after looking like it would be our first loss of the season. Credit to Moyes, he manages to get the players fighting for him.
Barry: He missed a great chance, but at least he provides an outlet and is in the middle of things. he also created a couple of opportunities for KDH, which he fluffed. We need to be patient with Barry. But he desperately needs back-up.
Brennan Johnson - I thought he had a poor game. He doesn't deserve to start based on his reputation. Dibling should be ahead of him.
George - what a strike! Incredible.
Dewsbury-Hall - uncharacteristically ineffective in front of goal. He should have buried at least 1 of the chances he got. But he is the heartbeat of Everton.
Armstrong - I am SO, SO grateful that we didn't sell him. On a yellow card for the majority of the game, he still had a terrific game.
Garner - was brilliant in the 1st half, but started fading, and substituting him was the right decision
Grealish - I agree with the comment above that probably the most effective role for him will be to come on with about 30 minutes to play. But knowing Moyes, the next game, Grealish will start left and George on the right, and one cannot have too many complaints about that.
Hackney - was extremely bright when he came on, and created the equalising goal.
Rohl - he is not very good at defending and Rashford repeatedly broke through him with ease in the 1st half especially. But he has pace to burn and his cross that Barry headed over was a peach.
Tarkowski - I sense that he is coming back to his best. He typically takes a few games to warm up, and if he is fit, he should be ahead of O'Brien.
Branthwaite - he exudes confidence and solidity at the back, but our back 4 need to tighten up.
Mykolenko - a solid left back performance. I think he is enjoying himself now with players like Grealish, George playing in front of him. I don't remember a single cross coming in from his side.
Maitland-Niles - what a way to announce himself to the Everton fans. Ironically, Moyes has a selection headache on his hands now!
Pickford - should have done better with the second goal.
Michael, you do a great job with your match reports, but give it a rest with your negative headlines, will you?

Barry: He missed a great chance, but at least he provides an outlet and is in the middle of things. he also created a couple of opportunities for KDH, which he fluffed. We need to be patient with Barry. But he desperately needs back-up.
Brennan Johnson - I thought he had a poor game. He doesn't deserve to start based on his reputation. Dibling should be ahead of him.
George - what a strike! Incredible.
Dewsbury-Hall - uncharacteristically ineffective in front of goal. He should have buried at least 1 of the chances he got. But he is the heartbeat of Everton.
Armstrong - I am SO, SO grateful that we didn't sell him. On a yellow card for the majority of the game, he still had a terrific game.
Garner - was brilliant in the 1st half, but started fading, and substituting him was the right decision
Grealish - I agree with the comment above that probably the most effective role for him will be to come on with about 30 minutes to play. But knowing Moyes, the next game, Grealish will start left and George on the right, and one cannot have too many complaints about that.
Hackney - was extremely bright when he came on, and created the equalising goal.
Rohl - he is not very good at defending and Rashford repeatedly broke through him with ease in the 1st half especially. But he has pace to burn and his cross that Barry headed over was a peach.
Tarkowski - I sense that he is coming back to his best. He typically takes a few games to warm up, and if he is fit, he should be ahead of O'Brien.
Branthwaite - he exudes confidence and solidity at the back, but our back 4 need to tighten up.
Mykolenko - a solid left back performance. I think he is enjoying himself now with players like Grealish, George playing in front of him. I don't remember a single cross coming in from his side.
Maitland-Niles - what a way to announce himself to the Everton fans. Ironically, Moyes has a selection headache on his hands now!
Pickford - should have done better with the second goal.

Ajay @33 George showed he can play just as well on the right and was definitely the right call to swap Grealish for Johnson. I thinking everyone would have been fuming if he took George off.
I agree Tarks played well, he was solid, but Mykolenko is so frustrating, he did get some good tackles in but still made quite a few fuck ups

He wanted to put ‘Jimmy Garner’ right back even though he conceded that Garner is not up to full fitness.

Just got back. The lads kept going and didn't give up so take a bow. Lots of positives and negatives not so many.

What I learned that's new (sort of). Hackney and George will be good signings. There's a decent footballer in Rohl but not at RB. Jimmy G needs nursing, Hackney and Armstrong can do a job in the meantime. Barry still often performs like a baby giraffe but now increasingly, you see some sparks of a footballer of sorts. Anyway we've only got one bollard left so we have no choice but to get behind him.
I don't know from that outing whether the very affordable AMN is the solution at RB but he's already paid back a decent % of that meagre fee with the injury time equaliser. Only his second ever goal apparently. Good timing...

We were tenacious and combative and our downfall with the goals against us was stray passes and distribution.
However, George played well and he looks like being a good signing and Grealish made a difference.
Moyes has again commented on the small squad, so we will see how we are in January, particularly regarding forwards.
We have a right-back who scores goals in Maitland-Niles and that's a bonus.

Grealish is the best player we've had since Rooney, by a mile. We all loved Ndiaye but Jack is better.
Johnson was a worry today, I thought he'd be better. Barry was as expected.
Poor game from Pickford, and Mykolenko was his usual fully committed, but useless self. Left-back is a way bigger problem than right-back, in my humble opinion!

It may be me, but it looks like Barry functions rather well when there is enough motion up front. He finds the right space, knows to sell the move before laying it off, just some decent basic stuff a striker needs to have in his toolkit.
First touch is still shaky but he is getting well positioned for the physicality. I think he will solve that problem of physical distraction in a way Calvert-Lewin never could.
I am starting to be interested in him. Before, it was just too up and down.

Unfortunately for Maitland-Niles a goal will not convince Moyes that he is a starting right-back.
Ian is correct: he failed to stop the cross that Sesko scored from. It will be interesting in the coming weeks, but tbh he's going to need all of them -- Rhol, Maitland-Niles and Garner -- to cover the right-back position.

Barry gets into the defender by space or touch whereas Dom just looks out of the corner of his eye and flinches.

There is a bit of choice in there, as there isn't a huge drop off to Maitland-Niles and Rohl. Comes down to freshness, impact, and state of the game.

Agree Ian, yes Rohl found it difficult early doors with Rashford, but he's a great player and a handful for a top right-back, never mind a novice.

I said I fancied we would get something from the game today, but when you looked at Man Utd's squad on paper, that looked a stretch. So take a bow our squad.
I think we have the makings of a very good side with young players showing now that we can expect even better in the future. Hackney and George are proving a steal for the money we paid for them, Hackney especially is I think a top player in the making.
As Alan @ 31 says, we missed an opportunity in the window to make this side that bit better and really have a very good season.

I'm used to looking down my nose at Man Utd, but they have a very good side there, esp the midfield. So, in hindsight, we did need to be cautious with them.
What a joy it is to be not getting anywhere and then being able to bring on Grealish. That confidence, he just didn't seem concerned in any way, and then proceeded to just torture the whole team.

Yes, what a finish in the game! This set of players never give up, the former Everton squad containing players like Jack Harrison, Doucoure, Idrissa etc would have lost that game.
These players are younger, faster, and more hungry. Now Everton can at least play football and feel like a team again.

So much to be proud of, quite a lot left to be desired. If we had brought in a new striker and a long-term right-back in the window, we would be looking up.
To start the match, I wish Dibling played instead of Johnson. As Spurs and Palace supporters have noted, Johnson offers very little besides finishes on the back post, which is nice, but not good enough. If he offered a lot defensively, that would be one thing, but I don't think he does that either.
Also, no one can convince me that Tarkowski should still be starting over O'Brien. What we'd lose in experience, we'd gain in speed, quickness and passing.
Poor of Moyes to miss that Garner needed to come off sooner, because it forced us to use our third substitution moment, which could've been costly.
We're still lacking that defensive midfield play that Gana offered in snuffing out passes between the lines. With Garner still not fit, I'd like to see Rohl there, with Hackney and Armstrong a bit farther forward.
My big concern with Jack coming back was not his quality, which was on full display for all to see; he's a top class player. The worry was that it would stunt George's growth, which it surely will unless Tyrique is comfortable moving to the right. If he is, we'll be tough to deal with on the wings.
Still undefeated, even with some stumbles. And with finishing like today, hard not to feel good after such an ugly week.
To start the match, I wish Dibling played instead of Johnson. As Spurs and Palace supporters have noted, Johnson offers very little besides finishes on the back post, which is nice, but not good enough. If he offered a lot defensively, that would be one thing, but I don't think he does that either.
Also, no one can convince me that Tarkowski should still be starting over O'Brien. What we'd lose in experience, we'd gain in speed, quickness and passing.
Poor of Moyes to miss that Garner needed to come off sooner, because it forced us to use our third substitution moment, which could've been costly.
We're still lacking that defensive midfield play that Gana offered in snuffing out passes between the lines. With Garner still not fit, I'd like to see Rohl there, with Hackney and Armstrong a bit farther forward.
My big concern with Jack coming back was not his quality, which was on full display for all to see; he's a top class player. The worry was that it would stunt George's growth, which it surely will unless Tyrique is comfortable moving to the right. If he is, we'll be tough to deal with on the wings.
Still undefeated, even with some stumbles. And with finishing like today, hard not to feel good after such an ugly week.

Good post, Jonathan. We have obviously got to be a little bit patient with Johnson, but he didn't look quite right today.
He wasn't playing wide enough, which is not something I expected, but I'm not sure if it was because the manager wanted him coming inside to help the midfielders?
I wonder if he could play upfront? Maybe just get him to work hard, and open up his legs and run? Because I'm absolutely certain we are going to need a lot more than Barry until the next window comes around in January.

I like Johnson. I think once he gets into his stride, he will start to score regularly.

A lot of good performances today and we created plenty of chances from open play, it was great being able to bring Grealish on to take the game to them and cause some panic in their ranks.
There were mistakes for both goals conceded and on another day could have kept them out.
We’ve got a good first team IMO and I’m happy with how Barry seems to be developing- he often helped knit attacks together and was close to creating some other chances. Yes he makes mistakes but he looks confident and we need to back him, a nice hat trick in north London next week please young man!
There’s enough to be positive about with this team, shame we just don’t have the depth to take it to the next level.

Happy with the three young players vying for a place in front of the back four. I thought Hackney looked to drive forward when he came on, Armstrong does the right thing 9 times out of 10, potentially a top, top player.
I wouldn't swap Branthwaite for any centre-half playing in the Premier League. Future captain. I think we have 6, possibly 7, we can build a team around. We need transfer funds to do that.

There was much to be encouraged about from that performance. We have a group of young players that have a bit about them -- George, Armstrong, Hackney, Rohl. All future first team regulars in my opinion.

We definitely didn't deserve to lose that match. And equalising in the last seconds of an injury time caused by Fernandes's frankly pathetic play-acting, made it extra delicious.
The roar from the crowd after Maitland-Niles's “top-bin” into the net was absolutely incredible, although the match itself was a mixed bag to say the least. Tarkowski gave his boots away at the end - I only hope he took the cement out first… I'll leave that there... 😂.
But Grealish, despite his relatively small cameo, deserves huge credit for the second goal. His bit of skill led to the corner Maitland-Niles eventually scored from, and his entrance definitely raised the game of Dewsbury-Hall for the better.

But Barry, who really should have scored with an earlier header, showed some promise in holding the ball up when he dropped back a little in the second half.
Johnsson, who had struggled in the first half in front of his right-side partner Merlin Rohl, showed real promise with his bursting runs in the second. And Hackney too looked like an excellent buy.
A definite mixed bag today but we also have talent in the squad, a lot of our players are young, which certainly gives me hope for the club's future! :)

The headline is spot on 2 fantastic goals steal a point from the jaws of defeat. First half it looked like both sides were ultra cautious in attack and both looking to pinch something on the break, which they were closer to doing than us.Our only attack of note in the first half was the barry header.
Even when they scored very early in the 2nd half there seemed very little urgency in us stepping up our attacking intent. Dont know whether its on instructions from Moyes but neither Garner or Armstrong ever got in their box, and often decided not to shot from the edge of the box when in space.I thought Carrick did us a big favour when he took Rashford off their most dangerous attacker. Certainly Hackney and Grealish made a big difference when they came on and George scored an absolute blinder. I thought well looks like are getting something from a game that had looked very unlikely when they scored their first goal. But with only 5 minutes of normal time left we still managed to concede what looked like a very late winner for them. But who could have imagined Naitland Miles coming on and scoring a worldy in the last minutes of extra time.
I think what most inside the ground couldnt understand was taking off rohl when it was obvious to everyone that Garner had been struggling with an injury for at least 10 minutes before he eventually had to go off. While I was absolutely delighted with the point thats 2 very late goals in the last 2 games that rescued a point but we surely need to be more attack minded than we are of late.
This morning apparently Moyes has said he doesnt think Grealish will be starting games for a couple of weeks as he builds up his fitness. Thats exactly what Moyes said about Hackney 2 weeks ago. Heaven knows when Norgaard will get a game somewhere round the Xmas period I guess.

What if the medical people got it right about not signing the American striker? Maybe he and Monaco were trying to sell us a player with significant ongoing fitness problems? It'll be interesting to see how much more he plays.
Meanwhile, what a pity Barry didn't bury that first-half chance. I think I might have made a better effort and I'm a third of his height and 78. Still, we all want desperately to see him succeed.

I had lost faith in Branthwaite staying fit but he is proving me wrong, which is a huge bonus.
