Watto's Euro 2004 Diary

Paul Watson gets to a game in Portugal.

 Day 12: Monday 21 June 2004

The Czechs beat Holland; Germany can only draw with Latvia — very funny!

Show the wife where the beach is (all of 100 yards away).  In reception there are adverts for tickets, a few for the England game — 150 Euros.  A few tickets for other games.  Also coaches to the games: Russia v Greece, 35 euros; and England v Croatia, 75 euros.  I rent a car for the next four days: 92 euros with baby seat.

Papers have two main headlines — Rooney es Espesao (special) and Guerra (war — Portugal v Spain).  Go for lunch in Plaia de Rocha, beautiful, just like the photos.  Very nice.  5pm leave for Faro-Loule stadium.  I get there no problems, I get there in about an hour.  I now have a warm feeling — I am going to see a game.  There are about 6,000 Russians, and about 3,000 Greeks.  The rest of the people seem to be English.  There are a few Scots, Irish and Welsh.

The ground is less than half full, but there is a bit of atmosphere, Bulykin stars for Russia, 2-1 at HT.  After 60 mins, Portuguese go beserk.  Game ends, Portugal have won and are through.  The Greeks on the pitch are confused.  Their coach runs on, they are also through.

I get back to the hotel. Tomorrow: England v Croatia.
