Anyone lost a hat?

Comments (3)

The season over and European football secured, I set off for a trip through Nepal and Tibet. About 30 miles or so from Everest base camp, driving along dirt tracks in an extremely remote area of Tibet, a small horse-drawn cart came towards us. The Tibetan driver sat lazily on the cart, flicking a stick at the horse, resplendent in a blue hat. As we pulled past him there it was - plain as day - 'Everton' emblazoned across a blue knitted bobble hat, my guess circa 1970s. Not a world wide brand name? Rubbish.

Nice story, but I think you’re just telling us a little fairy tale Alan! Now, if it was a Man United fan...

It may be sheer coincidence, but when I was living in Taiwan a few years back, I was studying with a monk who lived near Dzogchen in Tibet and we became really good mates.

Before I’d left from the UK, Everton sent me a hat and scarf set to help me ’convert’ a few locals to EFC, after my mum had written in to tell them of my travels.

I gave the hat to the Monk (his name was Demay Woeser, but I called him Jimmy) and the scarf to a Taiwanese guy.

It would be rather funny if that was the same hat! I’ve got some photos of him wearing it somewhere...will have to dig them out!
