Everton 1 - 1 LOSC Lille
Everton's final pre-season fixture sees them take on TFG stable-mates LOSC Lille at the Hill Dickinson Stadium this afternoon.
Jordan Pickford returns for his first game, with two youngsters risked by David Moyes in the first half at least as Armstrong and Dibling start. George was rewarded for his excellent goal against Newcastle with a seat on the bench alongsodeBrennan Johnson.
Garner and Iroegbunam are both out injured, while there is no place in the 23-man matchday squad for new signing Christian Norgaard, suggesting perhaps his integration into the squad is taking longer than one might reasonably expect.
First Half
Lille kicked off but Everton were soon passing it around in lively fashion, without threatening until Branthwaite slotted a wonderful pass through to Barry.
Hackney picked out Dibling with a tremendous crossfield ball; he then beat his man but tripped himself up. Everton got a corner that Dibling put in. Everton kept working it around, winning another corner that Hackney put in from the other side.
Pickford, still not up with the new rules, held on to the ball too long and gifted Lille a corner kick, which was cleared. Some neat football from Dibling, Armstrong and Rohl saw the German put in the first shot, low, easily saved.
Lille were getting more of the ball after 10 minutes. But Dewsbury-Hall battled back for the ball, feeding it to Ndiaye who picked out Dibling. He cut inside and unleashed a great shot that forced an excellent save from Ozer.
Olivier Giroud hurt his knee in a tangle with Ndiaye and needed treatment. Everton kept looking to play forward despite some close pressing by Lille, but 39-year-old Giroud could not carry on.
Ndiaye stole the ball and drove forward, playing in Dewsbury-Hall for a low first-time cross that was put behind before it reached Barry. The corner was cleared.
More fine football from Ndiaye, to Armstrong and quickly on to Dibling, who had another shot on goal. Armstrong was doing a grand job pulling the strings in midfield, and getting the ball out to Dibling whenever he could.
Dewsbury-Hall made his second or third mistake, and then fouled his man trying to get the ball back as the game went into something of a lull... until a brilliant bit of play down the wing by Dibling and a decent cross that Dewsbury-Hall could not do much with.
Ndiaye and Barry pushed forward together, Ndiaye's backheel not coming off. Ndiaye then skipped along the 18-yard line but scooped his shot high and wide. Dewsbury-Hall ran on to a forward pass from Mykolenko and was taken out by Ngoy... Penalty. Iliman Ndiaye (41') from the spot.
For Lille, a superb ball over the top from Bentaleb found Onal running onto it but Pickford was out to close him down and force a corner. Bentaleb then produced a tremendous left-foot strike that flashed past Pickford and almost grazed the far post.
Dewsbury-Hall tried to find Barry with a cross, but he was behind his marker. Lille had a late flourish but went in a goal down at the break.
Second Half
No changes for Everton as Ngoy fired a shot in on Pickford, but the early pace was sluggish at best.
A great play from Hackney found Barry who did exceptionally well to take the ball and then play it forward to Armstrong in acres of space with only the goalkeeper to beat but he blasts it wide when it seemed impossible to miss!
Branthwaite had to make a strong defensive header for a corner. A good move saw Dewsbury-Hall get into a good position to shoot when he felt his shirt grabbed but it was shielded from the referee's view.
Armstrong won a difficult battle down the wing before a mass of subs entered the game after the hour mark. Lille had the better of it until Dewsbury-Hall saw a chance to release Johnson with a brilliant forward ball that the new man completely missed.
George then fed Johnson who did better and smacked it goalward but too close to the keeper. Dewsbury-Hall put in a great corner that Beto almost scored from. Evertpnn kept up the pressure from corners, Keane heading the last well wide.
A wild lofted backpass from Alexsandro flew over the Lille keeper but bounced just inches wide of the far post!
A fabulous ball out from Alcaraz saw George quickly release Aznou who played in a superb low cross that was perfect for Johnson but the defender got in his way.
Lille went to score at the other end but Travers had other ideas, pawing it away with a fantastic save. The corner caused havoc in the goalmouth but somehow the defence cleared it. But not before another Lille scare.
George crossed in again but this time too close to the keeper. Lille were threatening but Everton's defenders were standing firm.
Patterson put in a great ball but Rohl couldn't convert it, and Lille went up the other end, Haraldsson volleying it in off Travers right at the end to even up the scoreline after an energetic display, at least it was until Moyes messed the team up with all his changes.
Teamsheet

Look forward to Moyes declaring them still not fit, when late November comes.

Hopefully you are wrong.
He's starting next week wide right midfield
43 Posted 15/08/2026 at 16:59:16
Obrien Tarkowski Branthwaite Mykolenko.
Hackney Armstrong
Rohl KDH Ndiaye
Barry.
Next week's team
44 Posted 15/08/2026 at 16:59:28
Rohl looked better at full back than midfield, he makes some poor decisions in midfield I think, albeit hes an improving young lad.
Hackney in and out of the game.
Theres no new news. We need full backs, Patterson came on and was awful imo. Mykolenko better today, but a very average full back for me.
We need a forward with a goal scorers instinct and a tad more quality.
Lille 18 year old who came on second half, looked absolute quality.
That said, weve looked better this pre season than many others of recent years.
Use rest of window to add a bit more quality and theres hope.
45 Posted 15/08/2026 at 17:12:04
46 Posted 15/08/2026 at 17:18:39
Having said that we need to start killing games off when we are on top and I still think we need a better finisher than Bill or Ben.

50 Posted 15/08/2026 at 17:31:54
How about Teddy, or Looby Loo, maybe one of the Woodentops. Oh, hang on, we already have two of them.🥺
51 Posted 15/08/2026 at 17:33:15
52 Posted 15/08/2026 at 17:37:35
If he plays like this against Palace, we are in for a hard season. I personally hope he's gone by Christmas.
53 Posted 15/08/2026 at 17:40:34
That's him, Garner, Iroegbunam -- all 3 defensive midfielders injured. Gueye gone and Hackney out of position.
54 Posted 15/08/2026 at 17:52:40
With Rohl at right-back O'Brien can expect a long spell on the bench this season. You can see why the Republic of Ireland do not play him at centre-back.
55 Posted 15/08/2026 at 18:18:49
Rohl had a good game at right-back, Dibling is getting brighter.
I liked the flat 3 in midfield.
Garner for Hackney, and that is our strongest 11.
56 Posted 15/08/2026 at 18:22:10
But that encapsulates our problem. The other 9 players don't contribute goals. Anyone decent would have buried it and then wondered about offside.
Barry was miles better than Beto.\ Patterson certainly not good enough. Röhl struggled with defending and it's obvious that a partnership with the wingers is needed.
And I think we are going to miss Gana.
57 Posted 15/08/2026 at 18:45:19
I would say that we need to sign on priority a right-back (duh), a striker and a centre-back. None of Tarkowski, Keane and O'Brien inspire confidence in me, and we all know that Branthwaite is injury prone. We need a good addition in this position, even if it is on loan.
The first half was excellent but, as soon as Lille started getting control of the football, they started looking quite dangerous. Dibling, Armstrong and Hackney were excellent, and Ndiaye looked sharp.
In the second half, I thought George and Aznou gave a good account of themselves. Brennan Johnson looked rusty, but he should come good.
I am surprised that Norgaard is still not training, let alone being in the squad. Moyes has his work cut out this season.
58 Posted 15/08/2026 at 19:16:12
Dibling had the opportunity to release him, and made the wrong decision a couple of times. One shooting, when the pass was a better option, and then the other way around when Rohl hit traffic.
That combination has potential. Rohl is happy to overlap, and can cover the inevitable mistakes Dibling will make. Dibling has a lazy looking style with those low socks. But look, he is a talent, and has a good ability to cut in.
Limited opposition, but I thought they looked promising. They will make mistakes.
59 Posted 15/08/2026 at 19:33:38
Jack Grealish: paying his wages. I think we are well stocked with wide men, unless Ndiaye is sold and Grealish is late sop to fans
Rico Lewis: loan, option to buy.
Ben White: loan, option to buy.
Liam Delap: loan, option to buy.
I wonder if there's any legs in any of these...?
60 Posted 15/08/2026 at 19:41:26
Rohl works his socks off but is wasted at right-back, and will be found out pretty quick in the Premier League, I think.
Hackney flitted in and out of the game, but watching him, I don't think he's a holding midfield player, he doesn't seem to be strong in the tackle or time them very well. He played some good passes though and looking forward always, I think a faster pace Premier League game will suit him.
Armstrong looks the real deal. I still forget how young he is, so graceful across the pitch, and growing in confidence with every minute.
Ndiaye was the best player on the pitch. It would be so hard to replace his X-factor, his turn of pace and close control just leave defences baffled. He may not score bag fulls but he occupies defences, draws 2-3 players to him, to make space for others.
George was always positive, has real confidence in his own ability, and isn't afraid to have the ball and try to make things happen. He could develop into something really special.
Johnson showed his instincts to get on the end of things and really should've got on the scoresheet... wide man getting on the ends of crosses, not seen that for a while!!
Dibling was so much more positive, doing things quicker with more confidence in himself, it looks like. Got to keep it up and go up levels too.
Dewsbury-Hall was the glue, he's the one! If he plays well, we will play well. He links it all, and I believe he's our key player this season; please manage him well.
Overall, we have some exciting young players; they won't be amazing every game, off days are inevitable. I think we need to be patient this season -- a good team could develop from these players.
61 Posted 15/08/2026 at 19:45:33
Divering Dave strikes again
62 Posted 15/08/2026 at 19:47:45
I don't know what you were watching, but Keane was totally at fault for the cross?
63 Posted 15/08/2026 at 19:51:29
There is no such report. Forest and Chelsea are interested as we are.
64 Posted 15/08/2026 at 19:52:56
65 Posted 15/08/2026 at 19:58:43
Also think Jake O'Brien is unfortunate to be singled out as at fault for their goal. Like anyone else, he should only be judged when he's had the opportunity to be paired with Jarrad for a number of games, so that he's unlikely to be left looking like a total mug because someone else has already made things snafu.
Thought Mykolenko was average not good (he fruitlessly chased one guy all the way to our left wing after coughing up possession). I'd play Aznou now even if he might occasionally over-commit. Keane's lack of mobility is even more pronounced (unsurprisingly).
Hackney has very quickly established himself, Barry linked up nicely at times, Patterson was pretty poor, Armstrong continues to mature as we all hope he can, Dibling is taking some significant steps in the right direction, and Johnson showed he will at least keep opposing defences honest even if he may be a bit wasteful at times.
66 Posted 15/08/2026 at 20:02:08
67 Posted 15/08/2026 at 20:06:47
Finishing wins you games and, with 2 weeks left of the window, we all hope something happens; otherwise, it will be a hit-or-miss season with Barry and Beto.
68 Posted 15/08/2026 at 20:10:02
They are the third best team in France and are in the Champions League.
69 Posted 15/08/2026 at 21:30:40
70 Posted 15/08/2026 at 21:38:52
#62 - Keane totally at fault for the cross. Aznou makes a half-hearted challenge and the ball goes wide and Keane goes over to cover. Keane gets beaten and the cross comes in and Aznou just blocks it back to the player who crosses to the unmarked player with O'Brien, Patterson and Johnson marking space. Yes, Keane was beaten by a player but I think he could have expected some assistance from the rest of his team.

73 Posted 15/08/2026 at 23:51:29
But what do I know as a Toffee of over 60 years?
74 Posted 15/08/2026 at 23:59:56
75 Posted 15/08/2026 at 00:56:20
Positives are Armstrong looking like he will become a real player, Dibling and Barry much improved (especially the former) and George looks like he might prove a handful from time to time.
Along with Johnson now in the squad, we certainly look more dynamic and are not short of options in midfield. But we are elsewhere, as we all know.
76 Posted 16/08/2026 at 03:23:50
I thought Rohl and Dibling combined pretty well on the right flank, but we need a right-back. 16 days to sign one.
77 Posted 16/08/2026 at 03:31:14
Back then, 25 years ago, he achieved some improvement, a Top 4 finish, but that quickly diminished, lesser places thereafter being achieved. As a manager, 4th is his greatest achievement.
Somehow he's now revered by TV as an eminence-gris when it comes to punditry, despite (and even including the Hammers' winning of a European competition, equivalent in significance to the old Anglo-Italian Cup that Second Division Blackpool won in 1971) doing sod all in creating/coaching a winning team for a trophy of even modest significance in the real world.
When we first got him, he introduced a stick-in-the-wood resilience to rescue us from relegation under our decades-long nemesis Kenwright, to whom Moyes always bent the knee, but his attitude now is still the same -- bending the knee to the owner, receiving £millions whilst doing so, and fuck to the Everton fans' hopes.
Hopefully by next April we'll have won 40 points.
Oy veh!
78 Posted 16/08/2026 at 04:04:41
The dividend payment was engineered to compensate them for the sale of the women's team and Goodison in summer 2025, which allowed us to make signings. As a result, we had little headroom to make signings in January or before the PSR cut-off date of 30 June, 2026.
Basis spending since 1 July, this is likely to be a moderate squad investment under the new SCR rules allowing us to spend 85% of football-related revenue and player trading net profit.
Estimates are that commercial revenue could be £200M plus for 2025-26 season, but it doesn't look like this will be a big spending summer.
Unless of course we bring in a striker and right-back for £100M. Anyone think that is going for to happen???
79 Posted 16/08/2026 at 04:36:58
He was from start to finish a bogus shyster serving himself alone and yet so many genuine Toffees had some sort of respect for him, for years, as did "professional" Evertonian staff who were employed by him down the decades of our obvious decline.
Bizarre, and we're still struggling as a result 40 years later!
80 Posted 16/08/2026 at 05:03:44
I genuinely believe he could become a top player in time. He has a bit of pace about him too, something we have been sadly lacking in.
Our midfield has quality and depth to it. Unfortunately the same cannot be said of the defence.
81 Posted 16/08/2026 at 05:11:55
We fear the consequences of failing so much, we won't do it. Look at Spurs' reaction to nearly going down. I appreciate they still might struggle this season, but the energy has changed.
You can't change a club's ambitions without changing the manager. Is it a risk? Of course it is. But others take it. I agree on Kenwright, he wanted Everton to himself. But he's long gone.
What if, for once, the board and leadership of the club adopted a win-at-all-costs mentality? I'd accept route one football to win a lot more football games.
82 Posted 16/08/2026 at 05:49:44
Just saying like.
83 Posted 16/08/2026 at 06:00:11
Having said that, Lille are no second-rate outfit, the referee could have been a bit more diligent -- how many times have we said that?
Overall, not so fearful of facing Premier League teams as I was last season. Hayden Hackney looks on showings so far to be the midfield general we have missed since Tommy Graveson.
Gana did well for us for many seasons but in a different way, even scoring a 'rare as rocking-horse shit' goal. Hackney looks like he may chip in with a few himself.
Dibling almost looked a different player, although we all knew he had talent in abundance, but failed to show it last season, mainly due to not being picked and lacking confidence (thanks Moyes).
Ndiaye did his usual Duracell Bunny role... I do hope we retain his services this season and beyond. Dewsbury-Hall did well too, and young Harrison Armstrong will have learned a lesson there too, probably still have nightmares over that glaring miss.
All in all, we have the nucleus of a decent team but still need a right-back although Rohl has been brilliant when deputising. Up front, although Barry seems to have improved slightly, we can't rely on him and Beto alone.
84 Posted 16/08/2026 at 06:57:36
How we still haven't signed a right-back is completely unfathomable.
At least we have four wide players which means they should be able to be constantly rotated. Anyone who knows anything about playing out wide will tell you it's a thankless job full of unselfish, dirty running, especially when you play behind a stay-at-home fullback.
I'm not one for predictions, experience tells me that they can often make you look silly, but with Everton now having four wide players, it still wouldn't be a surprise to me if I turn up at Bramley-Moore Dock next week to see Merlin Rohl playing on the right in front of Jake O'Brien. We will see.
85 Posted 16/08/2026 at 07:54:54
I thought they were both owned by TFG.
86 Posted 16/08/2026 at 08:13:19
His confidence has grown, but he still makes lots of errors and loses the ball a fair amount. That will drive the coaches nuts, not just Moyes.
The right back delay I think is down to holding out for a certain player.
I do think once that option happens or doesn't happen, they'll move to the back up option. Someone again posted yesterday that we have a strong interest in Doue. I hope that is the case, as he is undoubtedly the best option of all the right backs linked. But also the most expensive at £40m plus.
None of the back up options are perfect for what we need:-
Wan Bissaka and Spence are not creative.
Johnston is a gamble.
Munoz is very good, but 30 already.
Reed Feyenoord probably too young to play regular
Boey bayern munich, Baku Leipzig, ive not seen enough to comment.
Doue Strasbourg is clearly the star of the list
I can understand why Everton have monitored, but not bid so far. They've the weakest hand once others come in for him. So biding their time, watching the price come down, is probably the best and only option.
I think we would all be happier if the club signed their first choice target, rather than 6th, 7th, 8th on the list. All well and good say get a right back in, but it'll be the same lot that say hes crap, championship level etc, and then looking to sell in 12-36 months time. That doesn't take the club forward.
There is no doubt we need a new right back. In person, I can tell you Rohl is good enough to start the season. His main problem will be having quick enough feet for the small, nimble winger. But he will offer more going the other way than weve had for years.
This wont kill Rohl's development either. The lad needs minutes, and if he isn't good enough to start midfield, playing right back will do him for more good playing - than sitting on the bench. Same with Obrien previously.
87 Posted 16/08/2026 at 09:01:28
It won't be a surprise to me. I think it's a cert Rohl plays in front of O'Brien next week.
88 Posted 16/08/2026 at 09:21:11
Well Spence gone to Inter Millan and Wan Bissaka off to Villa.
89 Posted 16/08/2026 at 09:29:36
Youd assume that Rohl is now RB choice and Tarks and Branthwaite are Moyes first choice central pairing.
If Rohl is found wanting then expect OBrien straight back in.
At what point does he get chance to prove CB pairing with Branthwaite?
90 Posted 16/08/2026 at 09:37:51
Leighton obviously .
91 Posted 16/08/2026 at 09:55:33
I have said rohl is wasted at RB & Would be found out in PL up against some of the best wide men in the world, just like Jake is.
It's not a gripe with them, they are doing their best, what you gain with rohl at RB, the pace, agility and ability on the ball, you lose the defencive solidity of O'brien, so I think if no one comes in at RB you will see them rotate depending on the opposition.
It would be a shocker now if we didn't get a RB.
92 Posted 16/08/2026 at 10:08:58
The absence of Christian Nørgaard from Everton's 23-man squad in yesterday's pre-season friendly against Lille comes down to a few practical factors rather than an unannounced injury concern.
Timing & Integration: Nørgaard completed his move from Arsenal just over a week ago (August 5). Given that he was not involved in a standard, high-minute pre-season regime during the earlier weeks of the summer, David Moyes and the medical staff appear to be managing his ramp-up carefully.
Fitness Base: Having had limited competitive minutes toward the end of last season, he is undergoing a tailored conditioning program behind the scenes to get up to speed with Moyes's tactical system before being thrown straight into match action.
Precautionary Squad Selection: With the Premier League kickoff around the corner, there was little incentive to risk a late-arriving player in a physical pre-season test against Lille without sufficient team training under his belt.
While fellow midfield options James Garner and Tim Iroegbunam were sidelined through injury, Nørgaards omission is understood to be purely down to fitness management and integration phase timing rather than a setback.
At least AI doesn't talk down to me like fucking David Moyes... but I'm still not inclined to believe a word of it -- especially as I think he got that last bit from what I wrote on ToffeeWeb!
So Ian @53, I'm with you: Silence on Norgaard. Obviously bought him with an injury.
93 Posted 16/08/2026 at 10:13:05
😂 What tactical system would that be?
94 Posted 16/08/2026 at 10:18:24
I only saw the highlights but our lack of getting men into the opponent's box is prevalent in every game we play. I watch other teams and they seem to be able to get 4 or even 5 players in the opponent's box. No wonder playing up front in this system is harder than it should be.
Seems Moyes is also adopting our owners mantra of say nothing; we have signed players and played 7 friendlies in the last few weeks... but nothing from our manager.
Yet last season on pre-season in America, he virtually did interviews after every game, so what's changed? Thankfully under the Sky deal, managers have to do interviews the day before games and after the game finishes so Moyes will have no choice but to speak to the media.
I still have no idea what team I will see run out next week at Hill Dickinson Stadium, but unbelievably there will be no new right-back or striker.
If you had asked any Blue at the last game last season what were the most pressing positions that needed strengthening, it was right-back and a striker..
95 Posted 16/08/2026 at 10:47:33
Last season, he didn't register a goal or an assist for Spurs, and he played the equivalent of 33 full games. That is Mykolenko level.
He is quick, but his final ball is poor. Inter are buying an athlete more than a highly technical right-back.
Similar with Wan-Bissaka. He is a very good defensive right-back, going forward... not so hot. It is why Man Utd sold him for buttons. Signed for £45-50M, they sold him for £15M. He's 29 in November.
I like both, but neither is what we really need when Mykolenko adds nothing going forward on the other side. We have to get a player that will score and create 10-odd goals a season to take the team forward. We say there isn't enough creativity. Well we need to sign players in those positions where they will offer it.
Munoz apparently waving good-bye yesterday. Perhaps it is him.

I couldn't agree with you more. The club needs to take some risks if it is to attempt to progress.
Now is the perfect time. I think the days of being like Sheffield Wednesday or Leeds are gone for the time being.
Sure Leicester have dropped... but they'll be back in the Premier League in 3 years and I would say they'll win some silverware before we will.
Look at them. We are terrified of relegation. But why -- it will never kill us. We are too big of a club for that. And we'd come again.
We last won a trophy in 1995, a year they were relegated from the top flight. Since then they've won 2 League Cups, the Premier League, the FA Cup and reached a Champions League quarter-final.
I would swap our last 30 years for theirs, in an instant.

Me too, mate, in a heartbeat.
98 Posted 16/08/2026 at 12:36:28
We will sign another couple of players, I feel; how good they will be is anyone's guess, but I think we have the makings of an 8th to 12th level side if we don't get plagued with injuries once again.
It's easy to say we should have bought him or him but we can't force them to sign for us if they fancy somewhere else.

15 years of nothingness with that clown.

Whilst I wouldn't expect us to be challenging for the title, or even the top four, not with Moyes in charge anyway, I would hope 8th is the lowest we could do. Any finish in the bottom half of the table should be viewed as utter failure.

A proud achievement for some fans.

This keeps our brand as a big club intact and attracts in-the-round players, such as the latest crop, over other destinations.
It is something I am proud of.

Both managers seem to think that Wan-Bissaka and Spence are good enough to play in the top end of the domestic leagues and Champions League.
I still feel there was an opportunity for Wan-Bissaka, and Unai Emery isn't a fool (he's certainly not like Moyes!), the turnaround at Villa since he arrived is incredible.
105 Posted 16/08/2026 at 15:51:53
He could manage in the Premier League for another 25 years and he'd still never win a major trophy. He couldn't even get remotely near one with Man Utd.

It's like the not so bright kid who gets a gold sticker for not missing a class all year.
Not a chance of him/her winning anything but it's the taking part that matters.

Interested to hear thoughts of those here. Programme for the 1st game after I was born is available on eBay for £20. Worth it?
#90 Seamus Coleman? 22 goals compared to 29 for Baines who had 20 penalties and 6 from free-kicks, making him only score 3 from open play. That is actually one less than Mykolenko.
Transfermarkt gives Coleman 26 assists, Baines 56. I am not going to put up Vitaliy's number because he gets slated enough, and I think David @91 is completely correct. He is a modern-day Tony Hibbert (0 goals, 9 assists).

I hope to win the lottery each week but I'm realistic enough to know it's unlikely.

If you have not seen it - search for his post match interview after a humiliating defeat to Kansas. Search for "We're onto Cincinnati"
BB was famous for having no time for the press. He just was the most successful coach in NFL history.

That programme might be worth it to yourself depending on how sentimental you are and also which game it was after your birth.
The Blackpool home game on 13 November could be decent value if Stanley Matthews played and only to a Blackpool fan. We lost 1-0 and I remember it well — with the help of Google!
The other games were Portsmouth away on 6 November, Charlton away on the 20th and Bolton at home on the 27th.

None of this 'head coach' bollocks. A manager, who's working with the recruitment team to get what's needed.
Emery could have done the same at Everton. But someone like him has control. Yes, he has Monchi who he works with, but they are aligned.
We should be searching, talking, sounding out agents and speaking to the guys who could do the same. Our next manager should be the one who can take us to the levels Villa have got to...

Progressive manager, good investment.
Sunderland returned to PL last season straight into European competition.
We on the other hand, go on and on accepting mediocrity, dampening expectations, going nowhere fast.
Where is our ambition…?
114 Posted 16/08/2026 at 18:43:24
While the fans accept mediocrity the owners are happy.

It suited the Moyes narrative back in 2013 that nobody could breach the Top 4. Aston Villa and Newcastle Utd have shown in recent seasons that it can be done.
When in a position to challenge for Top 4 last season, with about 8 games to go going into a Merseyside derby where a victory would've put us ahead of Liverpool, he showed he simply was nowhere near up to that challenge. His team capitulated completely.
Apply this to any industry: you are on the verge of success and not only can you not grasp the opportunity, the opposite happens and you put the organisation into severe and instant underperformance.
We will finish 12th or 13th this season and exit both cup competitions in the early stages and to lesser opponents in terms of league positioning in at least one of those competitions.
Our top scorer will not score above 12 goals in all competitions. We will not win at Anfield. We will have at least one backs-to-the-wall heroic narrow victory at home vs one of the Top 4 teams (not Liverpool).
