Stuttgart 3 - 1 Everton

Everton conclude a two-game tour of Germany this afternoon against Vfb Stuttgart at the MHPArena.

Hayden Hackney starts but no chance of seeing new signing Christian Norgaard in action as he has failed to join the squad in Germany, where O'Brien and Branthwaite appear to be paired up together as centre-backs, with Rohl filling in again at right-back.

James Garner is still recovering from his 'minor' groin surgery.

First Half

Jarrad Branthwaite led the team out, and the home side got things going, keeping the ball away from Everton for the most part. After Branthwaite halted a very dangerous move, Beto saw a chance to battle his way forward and did well until the final touch which gave the ball to a defender.

O'Brien had to give away a corner, which almost led to a goal, the final shot missing the target from a narrow angle. Dibling had a little run forward with the ball but did not look at all comfortable.

Hackney tried an advanced forward pass that was never on and Stuttgart attacked again, but Everton were seeing more of the ball after 10 minutes.

Alcaraz got a gift ball from the Stuttgart goalie but Beto could not take advantage and shot well wide. There were some good turnovers in midfield but Everton then kept losing the ball.

Some much better passing got the ball forward, Hackney slicing his shot just the wrong side of the angle. But the goal Stuttgart had been threatening from the off came from Nartey who hammered into the roof of the Everton net over Travers.

Keane replaced Iroegbunam, who must have picked up an injury, ending the O'Brien - Branthwaite partnership in its infancy. Dibling ran onto the area and was fouled but nothing given, while Stuttgart ran up the other end but this time the shot was way off target.

Branthwaite forced a break-out from nothing, led by Alcaraz, Rohl's shot blocked.  Beto tried a wild bicycle kick that did not come off. Alcaraz got free and put in a fast low cross that Beto just could not get to.

Dibling did a little better but his final cross needed pace and was too easily headed clear. Then there was a string of chances but no Everton player could apply the required finish.

Dibling again took the ball in but was a fraction slow crossing it and Alcaraz could not beat the defender with his shot. Another great ball from Rohl found Beto but it seems he crossed to Dibling at the far post rather than shooting, and Dibling had no chance reaching the cross.

A Travers clearance up to Beto saw a great header on to Rohl and he crossed back in perfectly for Beto, who kicked fresh air when it seemed easier to score! An incredible miss!

Another Everton attack saw Rohl cross to Dibling and his shot forced a low save at the post. Dibling's corner was delivered well but Beto headed over when it needed just a glance.

A rare Stuttgart attack ended with Mittelstadt smashing a rising shot over the bar from 25 yards out. Another chance developed but Keane was in the right place to block it behind.

A fantastic header from the corner was heading in the top corner but Travers leapt across and pawed it behind as the home side had a strong spell of pressure. More strong attacking play saw a low shot saved brilliantly by an outstretched foot from Travers.

Everton broke out again with Alcaraz feeding Rohl but his pass to Beto was way too heavy. A fantastic tackle by Armstrong stopped another attack. Rohl got forward down the right but could not find Beto with his cross.

Beto again got the break... but then put on the brakes and any chance was gone before the half-time whistle on a very lively and competitive game that Everton could easily be leading by a handful of goals if only our players could score.

Second Half

Alcaraz kicked off the second half with no Everton changes. But Stuttgart created the early chances, Travers making excellent stops to keep them out, saving an own-goal header from Alcaraz on the line off the ensuing corner!

Dibling was a little stronger in pushing the ball forward but Beto was sandwiched by two defenders. Keane was adjudged to have fouled, and Stuttgart came forward again. But Dibling again looked to beat his man and move forward, this time his lay-off was delayed too long.

Qucker play from Dibling saw a nice ball forward for Rohl to pick up but his cross came to nothing. Dibling was in to steal the ball and win a free-kick but the Blues played it backwards. Stuttgart drove in and fired a shot off the post with Travers beaten.

Another promising forward play ended abruptly with a dreadful cross from Mykolenko. A good long ball from Keane found Beto who did well until he laid it off to a defender.

Dibling did a little better to get forward and play in Armstrong but he could not win the corner. Some great quick passing from Stuttgart could only win a corner at the other end, heralding mass changes for them on the hour.   They had to defend a couple of corners and the second saw a soft header with Travers stranded.

Ndiaye was much quicker releasing Barry down the right but he was stranded and lost the ball. Branthwaite appeared to grab his thigh in pain but it may have been his knee or lower, and he told the physios he was fine.

Some nice exchange passing got Everton forward, Beto flying over the goalkeeper and somehow winning an extremely soft penalty, which he converted (Beto pen 72').

Stuttgart looked all set to score with some clever play but Hackney hacked it away before more changes were made. But Stuttgart came again with some great passing and the final header clipped off the top of King's bar. King then had a routine save to make from a wide player.

The play was less coherent after all the late second-half changes, Stuttgart getting forward again but shooting over. But a poor Keane clearance came back with interest and the third goal was too easy.

A late late corner saw Keane's header saved on the line, Ndiaye's follow-up twice blocked, one possibly over the line, before the ball was cleared. Another late corner as the referee played a bizarre 10 minutes of added time, Dewsbury-Hall challenging for a header that bounced just wide.

The whistle finally went on a good workout for the Blues, although the glaring incompetence in front of goal looms large as the biggest problem going forward.

Everton: Travers (76' King), Röhl (64' Dewsbury-Hall), O'Brien (76' Patterson), Branthwaite (80' Tarkowski), Mykolenko (76' Aznou), Iroegbunam (18' Keane), Dibling (64' Ndiaye), Armstrong (89' Foster), Hackney, Alcaraz (64' George), Beto (64' Barry).

Subs not Used: G Pickford, Lukjanciks, McNeil, Graham, Campbell.

Midfield shoot-out - Hackney, Iroegbunam, Armstrong, Dibling and Alcaraz.

Chance to impress.

I suppose the result has some importance, we don't want to get tonked, but he won't pick Patterson at any price. I would have liked to have seen Aznou start.

It's far from our best side, so we will see how some of our younger players cope.

Played okayother than the finishing, which was awful.

Leave Dibling on, his best 45 so far. Alcaraz decent. Is Hackney playing?

We need two full-backs, we're getting skinned on both wings.

Tired after 40 minutes.

Mykolenko nowhere for their first goal.

Good build-up play especially from Armstrong, Alcaraz and Iroegbunam till he went off.

Encouraging performance from Dibling and Rohl but as usual anaemic in the final third with Beto in particular wasting opportunities a good striker would have scored 3.

Half-time: Stuttgart on top apart from Beto's horrible miss.

I don't understand why he brought Keane on for Iroegbunam. Why not bring on a midfielder, and give our two centre-backs a chance to develop???

Sorry but Dibling is either too slow in thought or just too slow in action.

Michael Keane will never work. I really struggle to support any team with him in it. Absolute liability -- and makes other nervous around him.

He's been our poster boy of shite for many a year, yet still, here he is, stinking the place out as usual. Not sure I'll be following anything this season due to being stuck in purgatory.
Phil Wood
43 Posted 08/08/2026 at 17:35:00
Travers has had a fine game again but you never let the ball run out if in any doubt. No corner, no goal.

I cannot agree that 2-0 is not a fair score. They have looked like scoring every time they have the ball around the box.

Some reasonable performances but we cannot start the season playing reasonably well in midfield but handing goals away at the back and missing chances up front.

I know he scored but Barry should never be allowed near a penalty take.

How can we spend the Summer strengthening the squad as we have but all in midfield? Haven't we watched for 2 seasons the same weaknesses and the penny still hasn't dropped.

A good run-out and good selection of pre-season matches but I just wish we could kick the recruiting team up the arse... or the people not backing them!
Ian Wilkins
48 Posted 08/08/2026 at 18:00:22
Whilst the first half was okay, the second was very poor.

Moyes played some for too long, they were dead on their feet. Those that came on were abject.

Sort out the bloody defending from corners. We have no decent full-backs on our books and plenty of bang-average players.
Kevin Molloy
49 Posted 08/08/2026 at 18:01:23
The positives: Rohl is staking a claim, he has to play. Dibling is showing real potential at last.

Barry showing quality touches. And Jarrad... we just have to keep him fit.
The goal. A perfect little ball from Dewsbury-Hall, and brilliant from Barry to get ahead of the keeper.

The negatives: what happens to us at half time? How many shoddy second halves have we had to watch in the last year? This has to change.

Not sure if it's the opposing manager getting to grips with our system, or a failure to inspire in the team talk, but something's not right.

Tarkowski and Keane look beyond their sell-by dates. And given Jarrad's fitness, we are skating on very thin ice.

We've got no decent full-backs, amazingly, 2 weeks from the start of the season. Which just feels like negligence.

A good work out for Everton and shows what they will be up against if or when we get into Europe.

Stuttgart are a class act, passed it very well and finished 4th in the Bundesliga. With this in mind I did not expect too much and every game sharpens the team.
Charles Brewer
51 Posted 08/08/2026 at 18:07:10
The difference between Beto and Barry?

Beto chases stuff and misses absolute sitters.

Barry doesn't bother chasing, so he doesn't miss sitters.
Ashley Roberts
52 Posted 08/08/2026 at 18:10:27
It seems as though this was just a case of getting some fitness minutes for everyone with no real plan as to how the team should be set up for the Palace game.

From reading the report, we have the same old issues in that the strikers couldn't hit a barn door from ten paces and the full-backs are woeful.

I doubt whether this is going to be sorted anytime soon. Is this because we just don't have the money to buy anybody decent???
David Connor
53 Posted 08/08/2026 at 18:12:04
Decent workout against a pretty decent team.

Dibling at last showing promise. Rohl continuing to impress. Travers a good back-up keeper. Barry and Beto, as we all know, are absolute dogshit.

Right-back, left-back and a half-decent striker please... Preferably this season please...

From what I've, read seems like Dibling played well?
How about Hackney?
Geoff Trenner
55 Posted 08/08/2026 at 18:22:11
David,

Hackney was largely anonymous. Tried to break forward a couple of times but lacks pace. Bit of a donkey from what I saw today.
Martin Mulrooney
56 Posted 08/08/2026 at 18:25:09
Dibling did okay at times, bested his man a good few times but still seems to make poor or slow decisions and loses the ball too easily, too often -- and Moyes won't tolerate that.

We look more threatening with Beto due to his power, pace and direct running; we create more chances with him on the pitch but he should have had at least 2 or 3 goals. He missed some glaring opportunities and had a poor touch just as he bundled his way past his marker.

Barry might have a better touch but we seem to lose any impetus and threat once he replaces Beto. Alcaraz was having a decent game on the left out of position and looked pretty dangerous. Mykolenko was awful, his delivery was abysmal.
Jay Harris
57 Posted 08/08/2026 at 18:30:34
Second half summed up the collapse at the end of last season. Some players couldn't be arsed... and as for that set-piece coach. How can we give headers away with O'Brien, Keane and Tarkowski there? The answer may be in 2 of those 3 and poo defensive coaching.

Also, I'm worried that Hayden Hackney may struggle to get up to Premier League pace.

Last point: For fuck's sake, Everton -- get a right-back and a goalscorer ASAP and stop the goalkeepers kicking every ball long. Beto and Barry don't even win 50% of their headers.
Jay Harris
58 Posted 08/08/2026 at 18:38:06
First half: good link-up play with Armstrong, Dibling, Alcaraz and Rohl playing well.

Armstrong was MotM for me. Rohl and Armstrong have to be a shoo-in until Hackney gets up to pace.

I thought Barry was an upgrade on Beto, whose first touch is still awful, and to miss the ball two yards out was shocking.

We need two new fullbacks, totally obvious today, but a right-back is a must. I'm still mystified why he brought on Keane for Iroegbunam and moved O'Brien... typical Moyes.
Jeff Armstrong
61 Posted 08/08/2026 at 18:49:35
Negatives: zonal marking, still doesn't work after 1.5 years. Try man-for-man marking Moyes, you've got the personal, use them correctly. Mykolenko shite as ever... Beto, ditto

Positives: Dibling, Armstrong, Rohl, Travers.

I didn't watch the game, but based on MK's commentary and the comments that followed:

1. Rohl is progressing well
2. Barry may come good if he is given good service
3. This may be the season that Dibling breaks out
4. Our defence needs major surgery -- the right-back of course, but also a centre-back (at least on loan).

And how I wish we could have a decent, modern manager instead of old Davey. Eddie Howe would do a decent job with this squad.

Christy (60),

It was hard to tell but it's possible that defenders got vital touches (or at least looked like they would) on the ball for both of the low crosses where Beto seemed to be odds-on to convert. He was, at least, working hard to get into the right positions to benefit.

Overall, I was disappointed today with how little sustained pressure we could exert on Stuttgart. Far too often, one of their defenders or midfielders just put in a minor body swerve and strode clear of any press. Meanwhile, we only seemed capable of playing it out of defence via ‘threading the needle' passing which was a very hit-or-miss strategy.

To me, we still look overly reliant on a few truly creative players on the pitch at the same time. Only having those specialist overlapping fullbacks will allow us to create enough space in the middle of the park for the likes of Ndiaye, Alcaraz and Dewsbury-Hall to routinely exploit rather than ultimately ending up in ‘blind alleys' 90% of the time.
Kevin Molloy
67 Posted 08/08/2026 at 20:55:34
We had none of our defensive midfielders out there, Si.

Iroegbunam, Garner, Norgaard... so it's not surprising we were easy to cut through.

Perhaps I'm missing something, not being a multi-millionaire football coach or manager, but in my very simple world, calling someone a “striker” means absolutely nothing unless they're actually reasonably good footballers who have the ability to score goals on a reasonably regular basis; with the best will in the world, Beto and Barry are neither!

So, unless we pay a king's ransom to purchase one of these proven “strikers”, surely it would make more sense simply picking our best players, who can at least kick a ball in the direction of the goal and turn a ball across the 6-yard box into an empty net?

It's not Astrophysics, and not as if we haven't done this previously with what people in modern parlance call a “false nine”. Because we have the likes of Ndiaye, Dewsbury-Hall, Garner, Röhl, Hackney, George, etc who're already one up on Beto and Barry, as they're reasonably good footballers, plus they can all shoot.

So let's play them in a formation that allows them freedom to be in and around the box more frequently, and dispense with these two duff “strikers”?

I watched some of the Leeds friendly before our fixture and it struck me after watching Calvert-Lewin's opening goal from a low cross, and then our own Beto missing several sitters from crosses, that we do miss this fully fit Calvert-Lewin.

Kevin (67), still far too easy in my opinion. It's not just defensive mids who are allowed to tackle.

I actually thought we really missed Merlin Rohl when he went off and Harrison Armstrong did little wrong as well.

Mark (68), we had a very exciting 15-minute purple patch but I don't think we deserved to win that game overall.

Completely agree, Gavin (73).

Two weeks until the big kick-off and these two are still our first-pick strikers.

That is a shocking indictment of our crack recruiters. They have to bring at least one new striker in, and then there are the pressing issues at ...........

Another long season, with the ridiculous problems of the last two seasons: no decent full-backs, and even more ridiculous imposters as forwards.

Rohl, Hackney, Armstrong and Alcaraz are workmanlike but are not going to hurt any of the Top 10 teams with their flair or creativity. That's why not having Grealish and Ndiaye in the team will mean fighting relegation... or at best, a 12th to 17th finish.
Jimmy Hardacre
78 Posted 08/08/2026 at 23:00:57
Beto and Barry are just clown forwards... my 7-a-side team had better finishers. When are we going to tell soft arse Moyes he is wrong? -- These two are shite and we need a proper striker.

The lads can run around all they want but no end product means a full season of stugglers. Wake up, soft lad, and understand, if there is nothing up front, all the wingers in the world will not help.

Project strickers? I have never hesrd so much shite in my life!

We can't and won't score goals this season and Dino Dave (who used to be a defender?) is clearly incapable of coaching how to defend set pieces and crosses.

Two full-backs, another centre-back and two forwards needed. Not going to happen, though, is it? Looks like another painful slog this season with us finishing 13th in the table. Groundhog Day.

To call Betto and Barry strikers is an insult to a decent goal scorer. I understand that this is a difficult position to play but at least you should be able to control a ball without tripping over.

This game once more showed why we struggle in the goal scoring position as we have quality in the midfield and on the wings but finding someone to complement their play is difficult with #9s that seem, as they say, to have two left feet.

Surely we should be looking for and paying someone who is aware of where the goal is as they spend enough time in front of it. It is great having Englands #1 goalkeeper but, for any success in the Premier League, you need points and someone to earn them by helping their team score.

Any half-decent striker absolutely puts these two buffoons to shame! Even Delap... the lad would be head and shoulders above them but I would take anyone.

Beto missing that chance today is criminal and will cost us points in the league or a place in a cup! And he is the better of the two!

Barry does sweet fuck all, zero effort! Thierno Barry is the complete opposite of what we want to see as Everton fans and he is an insult to our values, history and character.

It reads in giant letters at the gym in our training ground “maximum effort is the minimum requirement”. So why the fuck is this waste of space playing for us!!! We want our Ritchie back!!! He would put these two fools to fucking shame.

I've never hated any Everton player more than I hate Thierno Barry. Fuck him!!! I hope he sees this. Clown….

Neither of them even have to play, so why do they?!?! Play Alcaraz up front or Ndiaye, for fuck's sake. Why do we keep playing any of those two fools?? It's the definition of insanity!

Also, how mad is it that we start Rohl at right-back, then move Jake over, before bringing on our only recognized right back as the third fucking option!!!

All this talk about us not having a right-back for years is insanity because we have an international right-back fit and available every game!!! What is going on, people!!! We need to demand answers!!!

Do any of us even get any joy from following the mighty blues anymore? Even when we manage to win, it's shite. Fuck this!!

Dibling, Alcaraz, Armstrong and Branthwaite all bright. Hackney average but will improve.

Relegation relics like Tarkowski, Mykolenko simply not good enough.

Beto? Replay his highlights with the Benny Hill theme tune and it will make more sense. He was so bad that I was almost pleased to see Barry. Until he touched the ball.

Funny thing is, if you missed the game and wanted to watch a replay, you have to pay for the privilege of seeing them lose, with the only benefits seeing what the majority of corresponding supporters have written, of how poor our supposed strikers are.

Disappointed that they lost -- but I doubt if I am going to pay to see them lose a supposed friendly.

Here is a frankly American-partisan suggestion for striker: Ricardo Pepi of PSV and the USA. His long-assumed transfer to Fulham has fallen through now for the second time, and I think we should reach out.

He's the exact opposite of Beto and Barry – no outstanding height or pace, but terrific natural goalscoring instincts. He gets into the right position, makes a silky first touch, and finishes his chances every time.

Even in the easier Dutch league, a goal every 78 minutes over two seasons is outstanding. And because of that first touch, he can do the job Moyes needs from a target man – wins the ball in the air and lays it off perfectly.

Oh, and by the way, his resume includes a gamewinning goal and assist against Liverpool in the Champions League last year. So he knows how to shred the shite.

Hi, Mike (84) your dead right about Pepi, I wanted him 12 months ago but we signed Pele instead... sorry, Barry!

I said a month ago Everton are stupid, sounds a bit childish, But they are! Square pegs round holes, we still need a right-back and a striker! Are they blind or just incompetent?

Moyes has to be told of his short-comings, otherwise this will get worse! He doesn't read TW or Facebook EFC pages, so a letter is on its way! I've written to him before and got a reply in about 2008!

If I can make a difference great, if he chucks it in the bin, that's his lookout!!! Have a good week, everyone! 😀🌞

Two weeks to the new season, we still haven't signed a proper right-back despite acknowledging that we needed to replace Seamus Coleman in 2019 with the signing of Sidibe, it's now past the point of being a comedy sketch.

And we are still sitting here with a Rafael Benitez signing, our set-in-stone left-back, despite him being bang average and, in a league all about pace and dynamism, he is not fit for purpose. Yes, I'm talking about Mykolenko.

Going into the new season with still the same two limited strikers and no other serious option. We are a club that just sits drowning in mediocrity and status quo.

Sean, are you still banging that Delap drum? No thanks... he's fucking hopeless, a battering ram with the touch of an elephant, no better than what we've got.

Barry has to start for me, he is better than Beto, that was cringeworthy that miss right in front of the goal. I'm honestly getting to the stage now where I don't give a shit anymore. I despise Moyes,

The right-back situation is farcical, playing players out of position while we hunt around for years on end... Thank fuck the NFL starts next month, I'll be watching that instead.

Two-summer window = Two summers of stability and midtable. 13th or 14th at best.

Best to just switch off for another season. We'll be out of the cups early. Only thing that really changes is that we all get another year older without witnessing any silverware.

What we as fans would like to see and what this club sees as improvement are on totally different levels.

13 days to the start of the season and the squad is in a weaker state than last season. There needs to be three or four additions in the next two weeks.

Who have this crack recruitment team actually uncovered and scouted? A run-of-the-mill full-back in the Scottish Premiership and Christian Norgaard.

They've got the Panini sticker book out...

Another dire season will soon be upon us totally due to our beloved club being run by a bunch of clueless clowns.

Jim @87,

Seamus snapped his leg badly nearly 10 years ago. Since then, we have repeatedly neglected strengthening this position and I have no idea why. We had a 39-year-old winger playing there recently, and since then, a 6'-6" centre-back.

Patterson who is a right-back should be playing there if fit. Round pegs in round holes...

I feel the same, Billy @95.

First match in 1975 and never felt so low. Moyes... But it's mainly TFG and the lack of cheer and hope. They have done nothing on the pitch to alleviate this so far.

They really had fuck all to do with Hill Dickinson Stadium, our best moment since 1995. TFG and their crack recruitment team pitch-wise depress me. But, hopefully, we will have things to cheer as the season starts and the window closes.

But, I have never ever felt so low as I do now as TFG's second full season is about to start.

I really don't care what anyone else says. Whether it's financial stability or be patient for 4/5 years. This minute, right now, TFG and their crack recruiters have done nothing to make me feel optimistic.

This Cox fella who has bathed, soaked, sunbathed and had it relatively easy on Man Utd's money and world standing. What the fuck does he know about us and shopping in our bargain basement where you actually need to work fucking hard and be creative and innovative?

95 - Billy. It certainly is all very flat. We'll never win the Premier League in my remaining lifetime and quite possibly not a single piece of silverware.

Bottom line is people from top to bottom are only in it for the money, they don't care about the fanbase or having any ambition or winning.

The manager is here for a pay day. Which other club would keep the scottish Roy Hodgson on for another season? He's not going to leave without a pay off.

We're a club that makes up the numbers in the Premier League era. That's why Everton are irrelevant when it comes to media coverage.

Looking into the old crystal ball, I reckon by the end of the month the following takes place...

Incoming:
Johnston
Johnson
Delap
Grealish

Outgoings:
Ndiaye
McNeil
Alcaraz
Iroegbunam

That's about a £10M net spend overall... which is exactly what happened with Roma in Year 2 under TFG.

Such a showing would confirm beyond doubt that we are running a major risk at centre-back, we don't have a 'world class recruitment team'. that Moyes has given up, that the Yanks are just here to make up the numbers, and that we are in a Glazer situation.

The difference with us and Man Utd is though, you've just got to stand still and Man Utd will generate millions every year. With us, you piss the fans off, and this club could slide out of the Premier League, no problem.

I think they need to start playing a lot more nice if they want their new toy to retain the value they bought it at. Cos I'd have no problem joining a boycott to get this lot out if they don't spend this Summer. I'm sure a lot would feel the same, even if it did mean relegation.

I have only watched the clips and certainly we did miss soe very good chances, but the problem this club has had for a few seasons now is lack of goals.

Last season, our front 3 for most games was Grealish, Beto or Barry and Ndiaye; Grealish scored 2, Beto and Barry 20 between them, and Ndiaye 6. Only 28 goals from the front 3 is relegation form.

Dewsbury Hall weighed in with 8, a good return, but our other midfield players couldn't muster more than 2 for the season.

Now whether it's tactics that restrict our goal scoring or just the lack of quality from our players is open to debate, but unless we start to prioritise buying goalscorers, then I can only see this side struggling.

Apart from the Dundee game, against Bolton, Stoke, Hamburg and Stuttgart we have scored 2 goals; 1 was a penalty and the other an own goal.

Now there are players out there who would have improved our goalscoring... the likes of Bowen, who has a very good return, and despite not playing all the games, Harvey Barnes at Newcastle. I would have taken Wellbeck in a heart beat.

I find the recruitment of players for this club is a shambles, it seems we have players the manager might want and players the recruitment team want. Just take the shambles over the right-back at Celtic: Moyes rings O'Neill to tell him to expect a bid, then the recruitment team went to watch him and nothing since.

Even our Prime Minister has told the club to get a right-back, along with 52,000 fans every week.

Finally, I don't think Moyes knows what his best team is... and that, with just a couple of weeks to go, is very worrying.

We all know not having two modern-type full-backs, is holding us back. Even if we had a decent striker, not having players with the capability of Baines and Coleman in their pomp, we would still struggle to get more than 40 goals per season.

In all that time since Baines left and Coleman could be seen to be struggling, Everton have only had one modern full-back -- Digne. A full-back who can make assists and score some goals too...

How come? Why is it so difficult for Everton to identify two full-backs from the 100s, if not 1000s of full-backs on the planet? Why have we not produced a decent full-back from the academy?

It absolutely makes no sense. It's implausible in the extreme. There are full-backs available, on a free. Full-backs in the last year of their contracts. I don't believe for 1 minute we cannot afford one.

Either players are giving Everton and / or the Moyesiah a swerve or -- and I can't believe I'm saying this -- it's deliberate. The club is making a show of trying to get one but will come up with several excuses as to why we didn't come September.

We know Mykolenko is not up to it but the club have extended his contract. That is not progressive. In fact, it's a pragmatic choice.

I have seen, as we all have, that Aznou is a talent, a proper footballer, yet he struggles to get into the team. If it's a case of defensive frailties, then coach and improve him for god's sake. He's been here a full season.

Are we actually saying, as a club, that he has not improved? What is going on at Finch Farm? I feel sorry for Big Jake as he's not a full-back and neither, in my opinion, is Rohl... far from it.

However, I feel both will play the role a fair bit this coming season and we will be a threat-free zone down the right-hand side yet again in 2026-27.

Everton -- what are you? A once proud ship, lying in ordinary, masts off, cannons removed at the side of a river (how ironic), or do you want to be given a full refit, new masts, the finest of sails, with nothing but the best rebuilt by the best and set out once more from the Mersey ready to take on all comers?

Led by a fighting Captain, with the best sailors and gunners... I know which scenario I prefer. How about you?

If the lack of transfer activity is down to TFG and the recruitment team, then Moyes should call them out. If it's down to Moyes, then the owners should be vocal about it.

I suspect the truth is somewhere in the middle. Either way, we are currently fucked with regard to the new season.

I honestly think Moyes will be sacked by Christmas -- I just cannot see any improvement in the team: same dour predictable tactics that have blighted every team he's ever managed and got him the sack from every job he's had, bar us the first time round.

Every team we played in those last 8 games had us worked out tactically and Moyes was either too stubborn or not clever enough to change things.

It's gonna be a long hard season, lads... strap yourself in for the circus that is Everton.

Why is it that everyone can see (including the Prime Minister) what is required, but the club seems to be blind to the fact?

We appointed a manager with a mediocre record, a recruitment team that is quite clearly clueless, thinking that we could maintain our Premier League status.

I would hope that Moyes will be gone sooner rather later, no doubt it will be later. Players that we are being linked with are very underwhelming. The outlook, as usual, is grim.

We are shaping up for another season as also-rans. We can only hope we make 2 or 3 good signings in the next 3 weeks to improve us.

I think we will do okay, but it will only stretch to staying in the Premier League... but isn't it the same for most of the teams each season? A few will creep into the Top 8 but we usually know who the Top 3 or Top 4 will be.

The financial rules were brought in with good intentions but they have also killed any hope of us becoming the best team in the Premier League.
Dave Lynch

Raymond... we could have untold wealth to spend, but we are not attractive as a club and I put that down to our playing style.

Moyes does not have and never has had any ambitions to be a forward-thinking, attack-minded manager.

What in god's name was Moyes doing bringing on Keane???

Everything went arseways after that. Persisting with round pegs in square holes is lunacy.

Kinnear and his lot need to get their finger out. Squabbling over a few quid for the lad from Celtic and Yilmaz and not bothering to replace Bill or Bob upfront will have us hanging around the lower half of the Premier League table come Christmas and beyond.

Expectations are very low at the minute, is this just the way Moyes likes it or do we just not have any real money to spend improving the team?

I feel like I'm not the only one who is not looking forward to the coming season; there will probably be a few entertaining games but mostly drudgery.

I used to get annoyed when other fans would call us 'Neverton'; I'm starting to feel that way now and wondering what the point is...

No doubt I'll be hooked in 2 weeks and will be frustrated and excited in equal measure, with a smidgen of hope dashed when we exit the cups early.

I think the truth of the matter is we're skint. It seems we try to low-ball every deal and the transfer committee are waiting on the Ndiaye money to make any offers.

We shot ourselves in the foot with our failed end to the season which lost £20M in merit payments and I'm guessing we now have to sit on £35M to pay Burnley.

Steve @113,

I'm guessing we now have to sit on £35M to pay Burnley.

A new share purchase by TFG has injected £38M into the club, apparently to cover that payment.

We have also been assured that the payout would not affect the transfer budget.
Jimmy Carr
119 Posted 09/08/2026 at 13:40:14
Steve (113),

I am also assuming the potential £38M to Burnley has blown a bit of a hole in our transfer budget. TFG could review this and release more funds as that money doesn't need to come from our transfer budget.

Watching the highlights of the game, Jesus, we have to get a decent striker from somewhere. I don't like O'Brien at right-back but I'd live with it if we found a decent centre-forward to put chances away. Has to be the priority, even though the right-back situation is beyond a joke.
Ian Bennett
120 Posted 09/08/2026 at 14:04:31
Jimmy @118 -- I am not convinced TFG will end up paying the Burnley bill. The case was known prior to the takeover, so I would expect TFG have an indemnity on the cost from Moshiri as part of the deal.

Moshiri is due sums under a deferred consideration of about £43M. My guess is that sum is linked to the outcome of the Burnley case and other claims.

TFG have put a capital injection into Everton to repair the balance sheet and cover the Burnley cost ahead of an appeal. But my thought is that this will extinguish (part or full) what they were due to pay Moshiri under deferred payments.

That's my guess. The deferred payments might be on other things, but my guess is it is the Burnley case. I just can't see TFG ponying up for that... I wouldn't.

Aside from that, there does seem some odd Premier League moves. Forest sold Anderson for a huge sum and are out of Europe. You'd expect them to spend big, but so far nothing.

Aston Villa have been cautious despite Champions League qualification and the sale of Rogers. Newcastle have banked about £250M and sacked their manager. Sunderland: European success, spent nothing. Palace: European success, spent nothing and looking to sell record signing.

I'd expect this will change. A lot of players are still on leave, so there will be a late flurry in the window. How this impacts Everton... let's see.
John Collins

Brian #104 lays out the real issue.

Barry & Beto scored 17 between them while sharing the minutes. If we had one person playing 38 games and scoring 17 we would be happy - but not if it is 2. Ah, well.

But then apart from Dewsbury-Hall with 8 the rest were: Ndiaye 4, Grealish 2, Gueye 2, Garner 2. We are just not scoring enough from the rest of the team. Keane with 3 scored more than any midfielder except Dewsbury-Hall.

Most teams' strikers score less than Barry & Beto but they chip in with goals from other players. Nørgaard scored 6 in his last season at Brentford and he was supposed to be the defensive midfielder.

Our ire should really be against the wide men and midfielders to increase the number of goals. I would be happy with 10 goals a season from Barry and Beto combined, if the rest of the team scored 49 rather than 29.

I don't like to do Everton dooming right before start of the season. That being said, there was nothing that resembled a durable system in possession yesterday. Perhaps a bit harsh with new players together for the first time, but the criticism stuck as the match continued.

Iroegbunam managed to compound an initial positional mistake reaching for an interception, got nothing, and completely opened up the midfield for a one-two that made us look amateurish. That was fucking embarrassing, end of.

The goal attempts missed were not just down to inept anticipation of a frustrated striker; it is a feature, not a bug.

The players do not know amongst themselves what 'the play' is. They can't make out positionally what to expect from a teammate taking a certain channel or space. Some of this is an artifact of a slow squad but much of it looks like fundamental ignorance. An ignorance that should have been schooled out of a regular squad whether it is players 1 through 11, or the last names on the sheet.

Once we go down a goal, teams simply wait for our back line to come forward, once they are finished winning second balls from goal kicks. It does not seem like a coherent way of working possession into goal pressure is understood.

I can see some making excuses for Moyes concerning the lineup. If you are picked for the position, you must handle the positional responsibilities or the selection itself was a mistake.

If we are this easy to roll now, wait until the Premier League presses start...

Mega rich owners should just go out and buy the best (if they can convince them to sign) in the full knowledge they will be deducted points or fined -- it's the quickest way to have a team that will challenge the Top 4.

It would cost a lot of money and suffering for the year... but, with the right manager and recruitment, you have a great side for the following season. No guarantees, I know... but it seems it is the only way currently.
