Target Positions

From what I can see, we won't be selling any more players, we're already two down having released Sandro and Richard.

For me, musts are a new left back, Nuno is quality but lacks pace that we need; a centre-mid is a must, Fernandes is the obvious candidate we all saw his talent and £12M would turn out a snip. Our transfer dealings show why we're not a big club anymore, we've got 2 players that want to play for Everton in Nugent and Manny yet we still havn't signed them. These players would form the basis of the future, I mean sure they would cost about £17M for the pair, but the £12M for Manny wouldn't be paid upfront so that would leave us with spare money.

If we got a few good free transfers and loans, we can challenge, with players returning we have the basis of a good squad, but we need to sign players that can instantly make us better. Nugent and Manny fit this bill and I really hope that we can make these happen, Nugent is down on his knees now begging for us to sign him, so sign him!!!!!

Anyone else get annoyed when they see Koumas or Nugent saying that they really want to play for Everton?

I saw that interview with Nugent the other day when he was saying that everyone knows that he?s a lifelong Everton fan and all that. Same with Koumas saying it?d be a dream to play for Everton ? I?m sure plenty fans would be happy to see either at the club, they?re both talented players. However, I reckon this sort of behaviour is more likely to deter Moyes going after them than it will encourage. Moyes is certainly not the kind of manager to court publicity and it makes me think that we?re just not interested in either player at all if they?re coming out with these comments.

It?s the sort of talk I?d like to hear once a transfer is complete with them standing with the scarf over their head, it smacks of desperation on the players part. Call me cynical but it just sounds like a plea for other clubs to bid for them.

The reason Moyes is in no rush to sign either of them is that they aren?t particularly good (relative to the Premiership that is). Moyes knows the Championship pretty well and his two principal forays (Cahill and AJ) vindicate his patience and reluctance to go after Nugent all guns blazing. Although the player himself has said he will make no decision until after the U21s.

We still haven?t replaced Kilbane, Davies or Weir yet, never mind Wright and Pistone.
Those three were sold in transfer windows, 2 in January, and regardless what you might think of them, their sale left us short of numbers. Am I naive in thinking there must be some of the funds/wage savings available to DM?
We?te definitely short of midfield numbers, aggravated by overuse of squad-standard players like Osman and wastrels like VDM. Carsley and Stubbs will be another season older and having been away, have I missed Arteta being resigned or is that yet another ominous silence?
We need a defender - presumably Jagielka who can cover across the back. Neville looks slated to be in midfield - presumably to replace Carsley/play alongside him as our cut price version of Hargreaves and Carrick. Which leaves us a midfield choice of Cahill, Arteta (if he signs) and Osman. We then have VDM and at a pinch Mc Fadden to add ?width?.
God we?re denuded in the middle and unless we bring in at least two new faces and possibly replace VDM we?re in the shit.
That?s before we even talk about the ?strikers?.
Maybe a good youngster like that lad from Swindon might come through to augment Vic ?n Vaughan. So that leaves us AJ and lardarse.
So at least 3 new additions and at least 2 replacements is the very minimum we need if we?re to cope with the additional games we?ll be facing if we don?t get knocked out of all 3 cup competitions early on.

Chris, um, Arteta is not out of contract. The talk has been to sign him to an improved contract to lock him down and reward him for his work, but he is not out of contract. I think you might be getting confused between Arteta and Fernandes.

David, I know he?s not out of contract but he?s been pretty clear in his comments that he wants to stay but expects a better contract from EFC - ?it?s up to the club? or some such comment.
Perhaps the silence from the club and the player/agent means that talks are proceeding satisfactorily. Or maybe they aren?t. Who knows, but across the park some very decisive action in resigning their key players on long term contracts once more show up EFC?s seeming lack of proactivity or communication. It sort of makes you think that all the key discussions on the dark side had taken place some time ago making the final decision as almost a formality. Not so with us methinks...

Good post, Richard. But your views are wasted on simpleton supporters who blindly follow the club line of patience with no reward. While supporters like these are around, there is no pressure on the club to achieve!

How you can call Fernandes ?a snip at £12m? beggars belief. The lad has impressed several times but has also flattered to deceive in a couple of games. I think a 12-month loan would be what is needed with Fernandes and I would not be happy to see us blow £12m on one player at this time.
The Nugent issue is also an interesting one. Just because a player states he wants to join Everton doesn?t mean we have to sign him. I would like us to sign Nugent but the £7-10m price tag is an absolute joke. He just isn?t worth that. If Mickey Mouse outfits like Newcastle and Sunderland want to bid over the odds for another unproven player then they are welcome to do so, but I don?t want Moyes to be signing players because of media soundbytes.

I understand where you are coming from Sean but believe you need to speculate to accumulate. Some of the things Manny did showed promise above what we ve seen since one Wayne Rooney. I mean the double nutmeg on Fabregas and the finish against Utd were different class. He could be a world beater literally and it d be a shame to let him go and sign the likes of Jags and Roberts instead !

Will people please stop talking about 12 million pounds for Fernandes? The quoted price was in Euros, and would still be subject to negotiation.

I do agree that if we are to move forward, we should be signing the likes of Fernandes. Whilst Moyes has had a degree of success in a money-orientated league, I and many others would also like us to start playing better football. Guess I’m just old fashioned like that...
