Managing `the numbers`

Comments (10)

Am I alone in believing that the signing of Jagielka and Fernandes - on loan if necessary - would constitute all the serious business Moyes needs to do this summer? I have no interest in the Uefa Cup, believing it to be an irrelevance we could well do without. Sure it would be nice to cover all bases with a glut of newcomers but I suspect that few within our price range would be automatic picks and the Beatties and Naysmiths are as good as anything for the subs bench. My contact at Wigan tells me that Killer is set to return ? he should never have been allowed to leave.

With you there on all points Doug... accept Kilbane. Got a good price.
UEFA I don’t give a dam about either.

Here we go again on the Everton rollercoaster. The lessons from two seasons ago and the positive progress in the close season last year are all but forgotten and true to form, we're reverting back to Everton's boom/bust approach to football management! Can we have two consistent seasons - please!?! Sort it out Moyes/Bronco Bill.

I place my wager that our new signings (if any) will carry the excuse that they didn't have time to 'gel' with the squad pre-season or they'll not be suited to the Premier League as we lie in the bottom half of the table in November. Round about the same time we'll be getting postings on the Everton website from Phil Neville and Leon Osman harping on about how good the team is and how great the team spirit.

"I see x player in training all the time and he pulls some amazing moves, he just needs to find his form in games"

"Oi, Per, get the lucozades in"

Oh and one more thing... Everton played the same number of players in the Premiership last season as Chelsea... so BBC’s club stats page tells me!

So I presume you think a successful season is coming just outside of the UEFA Cup places then? The only way we can create extra funds without investment is to be involved in European games, which also attracts the better players (not the likes of Kilbane!) and increases the teams profile, which in turn increases the chances of investment. Just because we had a bad experience last time doesn’t automatically mean we’ll struggle again. Let’s see what happens.

I think a lot of Evertonians feel the UEFA competition to be a waste of time. It’s no more than a poor man’s European Champions League and viewed with disdain by all the pundits. There’s little or no money in it-the reward for getting to 5/6/7 in Prem is in the ’position’ cash.
I hope Moyes plays the stiffs to save the best players for league games.

FFS lighten up will ya, I fancy a trip away from the humdrum (just outside of the top four)even if it does mean added pressure on the squad ! Anyway it appears it does not matter where we finnish judging by some of the comments on here.

Doug, judging by the reaction of the crowd at the end of the Portsmouth game and the refrains of "We’re all going on a European tour" belting round the stadium, I’d say the majority don’t agree with you.

In my opinion we need 6 new faces to seriously compete on multiple fronts next year. The operative word is "compete" - I don’t want us to treat any competition with less than 100% commitment.

Sorry, the squad’s not big enough - not even for a sustained league campaign, let alone the Cup competitions

Playing in Europe is great, hence the crowd reaction, but I don’t think that means it translates to importance.
UEFA sold out this competition when they combined it with the Cup Winners Cup and allowed in the CL failures.
I’d rate this competition above that of the FA Cup and League but below qualification to the CL... It’s sad that all cup competitions other than the CL don’t mean a thing until perhaps a Semi or Quarter Final when you have a chance to win.

Anyone fancy starting a petition demanding Sheff Utd's relegation from the Premiership? Should help move the Jagielka deal along nicely...
