Approaches for Johnson

Comments (8)

With Bent's move to West Ham seemingly having fallen through, it will be interesting to see if the Hammers make an approach for Johnson. If they were to make an outrageous offer, I think it would merit consideration as it would allow us to secure at least two quality signings . Nugent would be a great signing and we could also afford a quality central midfielder also. Whist some may see such a move as counterproductive I think it would be a good piece of business.

I am surprised that any one would consider selling AJ as we are building a squad and if we start selling our better players it sends out negative vibes to future targets as well as fans if we got £20million to replace him would cost at least half probably more and Victor and James although both are progressing fast neither are at the stage to put the pressure on them as main strikers

I know that this might sound ridiculous and naive, but there is another reason to turn down an offer for AJ. Us fans constantly bitch and moan about players being greedy and abandoning teams for a bigger pay check. We hate the lack of loyalty. And our club has been fairly respectful to its former players in rescent years, with the examples of Weir, Davies, Kilbane, being sold because they were not getting a run in the team and wanted first team football. Moyes respected their wishes and sold them to clubs that they wanted to go to and where they would get in the team. If we cash in on AJ after one season after he played so hard and so well for us, do you think that players like Arteta, Yobo, etc might lose any loyalty they have for the team.

I can’t argue against the business and financial sense it would make to sell him for the rumoured 20 Million. But I like AJ as a player and think he is a good influence on the youngsters Vaughan and Anichebe. Not to mention that I would hate to see us have to defend against him twice a year. The man is havoc on the best defenses in the league. He may not be the best marksmen and have the best skill on the ball, but his work set up many opportunites for others to get goals this season. And I think he will have much better luck getting penalties this season after last years admittance that he was denied something like 8 to 10 legitimate penalties. Reject the money and keep our team together, that’s what I say at least.

What I can’t understand,is why would West Ham offer the rumoured £20m for AJ,when they only offered £17m for Bent?In my opinion, Bent is a better all round striker than AJ,he is a better finisher and just as quick.
I can imagine if West Ham did come in for him,it would be for less than the amount offered for Bent.It just makes sense.

It would be ludicrous to refuse a £20M offer for Johnson if,as a result,it meant matching the 90K a week West Ham have apparently offered him.AJ is a more than decent player but his occasional England appearances have shown he’s no world beater as his control and finishing leave much to be desired. In some ways his inclusion makes Everton even more one dimentional as long balls are hammered up to an ever-willing runner.
At £20M,I would bite their hands off!

Whisper it quietly, but AJ is just a little over rated. However, I would’nt sell him even at £20 million because I would’nt trust that Chairman of ours to re-invest all that money. However, one thing is for sure. In 2 years time James Vaughan will be twice the player Johnson is, though I doubt either of them will still be at the club.

I dont see selling your best forward and bringing in a number of lesser signings an improvement..Its going backwards again. If after all thats been said, we decide to sell AJ for whatever reason, it would say a lot about the honesty and ambition of the people who currently run the club.
