Sixth was great

Comments (7)

I really do think too many of us Evertonians are `getting above our station`. On the back of a hard-worked sixth place, there`s all this talk ok `kicking on to the next level` - whatever that means! Let`s face it, we can only ever hope to be `the best of the rest` and we were only one place below that last season. I, too, suspect Dodd was right about the £25M bond to secure the Tesco/Knowsley funding; having overspent last year, £10-15M is all the Moyestro can expect this time round. The test will be how he spends it

So don`t get carried away, sixth was great ? we`ll be lucky to repeat it next season!

Ah... a different take on the Bill and Dave dynamic. Can't both be right, surely?

"Let’s face it, we can only ever hope to be ’the best of the rest’".

You are wrong for so many reasons.

There was a great movie years ago called "Kelly?s Heroes". To quote the character ?Oddball? would be the best way to sum this article up.

"Stop with the negative waves and have a little faith baby".

Even if this was true, which it isn?t, why think that way? It takes all the fun and anticipation out of supporting Everton. To add value to my judgement we need to concentrate on taking points from those teams below us in the league. Last season we took four points from both the "Shite" and the "Arse". If we would have done as said above we would have come third, theoretically.

Don?t forget the two games against Chelsea and the calibre of goals it took to beat us, the ill-presence of luck especially with penalties and that 25 minutes against ManU.

Yes, we have a small squad. Yes, we have more games this year. Yes, we have a limited budget. Yes, Moyes makes tactical blunders every now and then and we might be a long way from the glory days of the 60s, early 70s and the 80?s but it?s a dam sight better than the Peter Johnson era.
My parents weren?t football fanatics like me and my older brothers. They emigrated to Australia in ?82, with me as a 12-year-old. I only got to Goodison twice when my brothers took me into the stands for my birthday. I missed out on those wonderful years under Kendall. I live, eat, sleep and breathe this team and it makes my wife crazy because she can?t grasp the concept, even if she did get the Everton crest engraved on my wedding ring. I?m so jealous of you guys that get to feel the anticipation and soak up the atmosphere as you walk to the ground with your mates talking about "whatever will be, will be" or the glory days reliving memories then having the priviledge of watching your heroes run out onto the paddock. (How much you pay for this priviledge and how they play are an entirely different matter though).

Me. I get to be a season ticket holder for the Queensland Roar. Yippie. One of my fondest memories was jumping up and down on my bed at 3:00am in the morning after Barry Horne scored that cracker against Wimbledon. I was listening to the BBC broadcast on my radio having to flick the dial every couple of minutes to keep the Short Wave reception. Where were you? If you were at the game, how did you feel? How good did it feel at that moment to come 17th in the league. Ironic isn?t it.

I know I support from a far but the glory days will return, just "Have a little faith baby".

Awford is spot on with this letter. We may hope to be ?big? again but there?s no way it?s gonna happen. To me, sixth WAS great and if Moyes can keep to this standard ? and the occasional break into the top four as he has already achieved ? I shall continue to be a very happy Evertonian.

This is the sort of post I hate. Sport is about competeing and trying to be the best. Why should we bother playing to only aim to be second best ? NO I believe that with a couple of good signings we can be challenging for fourth place as we have a good base to build on. Fourth place brings champs league money and added chance of investment which brings in better players. Why should we settle for 6th ?

A defeatist attitude this letter.I am quite confident that if we had,had a manager with positive tactics we would have finished in third place, there would have been none of this"lets get sixth and get in the EUFA cup" It would have been champions league laddie!God knows what Paul Attress would have done to himself, with his attitude of "At last we are a top ten side"

While a dose of realism is always healthy, I think you go too far Melvin! I’m of the opinion that the ’top four’ are there to be broken into, not to hover respectfully around knowing our place.

I agree with you that we shouldn’t make assumptions about that happening imminently, but why shouldn’t we try and improve? Why shouldn’t we "kick on", even if that only means small improvements year on year? Of course it will be hard. But as others point out, that’s the whole point of supporting the team. The gap between our expectations and our hopes has closed a little in the last few years - why would we stop now?

Well I am glad our manager and players don’t share your defetist attitude lad. Nor the 38,000 who regularly spend thier hard earned cheering the lads on. As a man we want more and we expect more and little by little we are getting more. If it wasn’t for the uefa cup this season I would back us to push for a top four spot this coming season. Shite and Arse may find things a little more competetive this year and I fully expect Spurs to be pushing them hard and we could be in with a shout also.
What we need more than anything this season is some consistency over a full campaign. I think we are getting there and there are exciting times head.
