Dire European Record

Comments (10)

I was just checking through our European record since the 1960s. Aside from the '85 win in Rotterdam there ain't much too cheer about. We got to a European Cup semi-final in 1971 and that's about it. Pretty crap for a club of our history. To be blunt, we're no-marks in terms of European competition! Of course this would have been very different but for those lovable reds and their antics at Hysel.

Due to this, it suprises me that many blues don't give a toss about the Uefa Cup this season. I for one want to see us bring it home.

Part of it must be the fear that we will once again crash and burn ? especially if we fail to build enough squad depth. Then there is the distinct lack of glory associated with it, and the all-too-common and well-established effect that Thursday games in far-off lands have on subsequent (away) Premier League games moved to Sunday...

There, I'm convinced. How about you?

Our European record is woeful, we?ve won the equivalent of the European Coca Cola Cup once, and that?s it, whilst those Red twats have one of the best records in European football, only bettered by Real Madrid and AC Milan, it?s just not fair!

We would have won the European cup if it wasn?t for them, probably about 6 times by now, and if we hadn?t got banned from Europe we would have continued winning trophies and it would probably be US who would now be Britains most successful club, not those Red shites.

I know everyone got banned, but it affected us well more than anyone else, and it?s their fault that we still haven?t recovered over 20 years later, the red shite are to blame for everything which is wrong with EFC.

Well I don’t know if we’d have won old big ears six times. Once would have been nice. Given the team we had at the time though we certainly could have won a few and some more 1st Division titles to boot.
Do you think we should still be bitter about the European ban? Or should we forgive and forget? Personally nothing short of those cunts across the park going bankrupt would satisfy me!!

I for one care about the UEFA cup this season. For several reasons:

Firstly there might not be an immense amount of prestige but it remains a European trophy and you still have to beat some very good teams to win it. Were we in the final next May I can’t imagine any of us would be talking about it not mattering. It’s bigger than the Carling Cup and we still make an effort at that every year.

Secondly it affects our rankings with UEFA. Thus should we qualify for the Champion’s League a good UEFA cup run might see us playing Moldovan plumbers rather than eventual semi-finalists.

Thirdly I’m a football fan and an Everton fan. I want to see us playing matches and the UEFA cup gives us a few more games, hopefully to enjoy, and in a different format and against different teams to those we usually face.

If all fans are interested in is us becoming the best team around and nothing else until then then it’s gonna be a depressing time ahead. Whilst I believe it’s possible for us to achieve that it’s not going to happen for some years yet. The UEFA cup is a chance for us to assert ourselves on a wider stage fire a warning shot to the supposed bigger clubs. Why not do so?

Let’s try win the UEFA Cup 1st. Given our European record, we’ve NEVER made the like of Real Madrid quiver in their boots!
Although, saying that, if the Shite can get to the European Cup final then perhaps we can in 2009.

For a club with our domestic record our sojourns into Europe (1985 aside) have been painful and embarrassing. I would like to think that we could have a good run in Europe in the coming season. TV exposure is a must for EFC and that is what the UEFA cup will provide, however, like most Blues I worry that it will adversely affect our league form.
John Moores had a vision that included being European Champions , unfortunately he also had shares in our city rivals. If only we had moved to Kirkby in the 1950’s we would have competed in Europe every season during the 60s , rather than suffer that silly one city one club rule. I also hope that Mr. Wyness and Kenwright appreciate that getting to Goodison by public transport during the week is ardous for those living outside the area. Given this difficulty I hope they structure the prices at realistic levels to ensure that Goodison has as many inside as possible.

Your spot on Paul our record in European Comps is terrible. The last time we ventured in to Europe it was no different from the usual dissapointment we all expected.

This time around will be just as bad if Moyes doesnt get a move on with some signings.2 weeks ago I Was slated for saying our chances
in the Eufa cup would evaporate in round one if we dont get bodies in.

Still no one has signed and all we get is silence from all concerned at Everton.
Time once more to prepare for
an early exit and more Euro misery i think. Just glad I am back in Cyprus during this none signing period.

Stefan, your spot on regarding the Quarter final match against
Panathaniakos, after the game at Goodison, I travelled to Athens the game was played in a stadium nearly as old as the Parthenon, dodgy refeering and some bad luck & out we went, we travelled home to face the shite at Old Trafford on the saturday, in the semi final of the FA cup, after going in at halftime 1-0 up thanks to Bally, and the old disaster hit us.
Labby limping off, with a injury that would eventually finish his career, the rest is history.
So in a matter of four days our cup dreams were shattered.

Oh for those days to return, but with this squad I doubt it.
