Surely a Striker Will Be Bought?

Comments (8)

I have just read that Aliadaire from Arsenal has joined Boro for a shrewd £1.5m. Now, if we are operating on a tight budget this summer, and I think most of us would agree we could do with a fresh striker - then Aliadaire would have fit the bill for me. He has proved at Arsenal that, despite limited chances, he is a dangerous striker capable of finding the back of the net but also is continental; helpful for tackling a UEFA cup.

If we are losing out on good players to the likes of Boro what hope do we have? Unless there is better players to come...

A striker is not currently Moyes's priority. It seems that midfield (wide and central) is the area he wants to bolster first; any striking acquisitions will come after that.

The guy scored 4 goals last season, all in the Carling Cup. So that, to you, proves that he is a quality player who can find the back of the net? Okay, whatever you say. McFadden scored 3 goals last season, in very limited appearances and Anichebe scored 4. Just because he is coming from a club like Arsenal does not make him a quality player. Remember Mikael Forsell, former Chelsea player. We really dodged the bullet with that one!!!! Aliadaire may come good, who knows, but he’s nothing to brag about currently, that’s all I’m saying.

David,

so do you not consider him to be worth the punt of £1.5m? At that price there is little risk, only the addition of a decent striker for small change in todays market of £17m Darren Bents!

WE NEED TO BOLSTER THE SQUAD ALL ROUND FOR AS CHEAP AS POSSIBLE!

Also, for what it’s worth I think it is a huge mistake to rely on Anichebe and Vaughan next season. Yes they took there chances well this season but in all fairness they are very rough around the edges, and already proving prone to injuries.

Robbie, I’m just saying that we did not need to sign him. I want every 1.5 Million that we have to go towards strengthening the midfield and defense. Then, after that is done we can try to pick up a striker. But two young up and coming strikers is enough for our team, we don’t need a third. I totally agree with you about how over priced the likes of Bent are. It’s getting ridiculous. But Boro Fan has it right, if he was any good they would have kept him. We chose Lescott over Huth last year, and again look how well that has turned out for us. Moyes made the right choice.

And we are not just relying on Vaughan and Anichebe, we are relying on Johnson and Vaughan most likely, with Anichebe providing cover with whomever else we choose to keep, whether it be Beattie or McFadden or both. Vaughan has showed he has the ability, but Anichebe still does need some work, which is fine. Vaughan came back from his knee injury well, with the injury to his artery being a completely fluke injury.

Robbie, I have to agree with David. I am astonished by the stories across the media that we are constantly being out priced for players and have a very limited budget. Whilst I don’t believe this to be completely true (I think we will end up spending £15-17m this summer), I wouldn’t waste whatever we have on the boy Aliadiere.

Granted he took the Shite to pieces last season and for that I will always be grateful, but lets be honest he broke on to the scene about three years ago as one of Wenger’s new breed but his career has totally stalled with the exception of last season’s Carling Cup. He wasn’t even prolific in the Championship with Wolves.

And with regards to our striker situation, I can fully understand Moyes not being too arsed if he makes additions. Thankfully, it is starting to dawn on the majority of Blues that Nugent is only a £3-4m player at best, and in all fairness with more pressing concerns (i.e. the entire left side!!) I can’t see the problem with keeping hold of Beattie, at least until January.

Finally, I think you are being unfair on the two youngsters, particularly Vaughan. He is a gem. A real gem. He has the potential to be a world beater that boy and I believe he will make a real impact next season. Also don’t over look the return of Cahill and therefore the effectiveness of the old 4-5-1. I can see Moyesey utilising this solid, dependable, if not sligtly boring formation in a number of away games next season, and in the majority of Uefa Cup away legs allowing the youngsters to have a breather on occasion.

Fair enough point Robbie, but I would agree with most others that we need to look towards the defence and midfield.

We already have AJ, Beattie, McFadden, Anichebe and Vaughan. I dont think Aliadaire would improve what we already have, even for £1.5m. He could well end up being a shrewd purchase but so far he has yet to flourish at Arsenal (albeit with limited chances) or any of the many clubs he has been loaned to over the last few years.

Midfield is deffo the place we need to bolster as we can’t rely on the likes of Leon "Weak Tackler, Thrown off the ball too easily" Osman for much longer. Unless he beefs up over the summer I predict he will still be a weak player when he comes back, he’s alright mind, as long as no-one is near him when he’s on the ball.

He´s had more clubs than Tiger Woods, and been crap at most of them!

Aliadiere is not good enough for Everton. I’m glad we didn’t buy him!
