The Mail Bag

Same old Summer

So here we are exactly six weeks after showing interest in Phil Jagielka.. Still waiting on an answer to find out if we can sign... Yes Phil Jagielka. What is the big delay in this deal anyway? Does Jagielka really want another relegation battle if some minor miracle happened and Sheff Utd were reinstated to the Premiership? He has already said he wants to play for Everton so maybe now its up to Moyes and Kenwright to be hard and say to Sheffield United "ok heres the £4 million now take it or leave it".

We cannot afford to waste anymore time on this deal because with all due respect Jagielka is hardly top class and for me I am very suprised that Moyes has made him the number one transfer target, we already have a player like him in Phil Neville. You could say he is a classic Moyes signing. Its typical of Everton again that we mess around so long on one player whilst there are numerous clubs improving the attacking side of their team.. Aliadeire..Mark Viduka..Sulley Muntari..a few strikers who have passed us by. Why are we not in for Nigel Reo Coker? Or Diomansy Kamara and Jason Koumas? David Nugent?. Mario Melchiot went to Wigan as a free agent. Where was the defensive minded Moyes then?.. Is Beattie still going to be here next season?.

There is little time to do so much work especially in today's transfer market of interferring agents and so far after finishing sixth and getting into Europe the summer has been very very dissapointing in my personal view.

I guess we do need at least one thread each day bemoaning the same old things... I'm not sure what's worse ? the lack of activity in the transfer realm (or any other meningful event other than today's blockbuster news: the Everton Netball team!) or reading about how frustrating this is making yer average fan. Can't we please all go on our holidays now!

So DM is STILL hanging on for Jags, his number one transfer target. I have to ask the question of how does he fit into Moyes's plans? So far he has not made any moves and I like many others feel the growing level of discontent amongst the fans. If Jagielka is the number one target and DM lands him, does that mean that all other transfers will be geared around the capture of him?! What if he doesn't land Jagielka, has he got a host of other players and a different idea of the style of football that we will be playing next season?? The silence from Goodison is deafening at the moment. I am starting to come to the idea, that Moyes isn't just being his frugal self! Surely there are other targets out there that he has in mind, if so why has he not acted sooner?

If things happened easily this wouldn’t be Everton. We always do things the hard way. Its unfortunate that the Jagielka deal is being tied in with the West Ham saga which means we don’t know if we can trigger the 4m get out clause in his contract untill the isue is sorted. Without the get out clause he may cost us 6m. Personaly I would rather wait for the commission to finally ’relegate’ Utd and get him for 4m.

As to where he fits in given that we have Neville and Carsley. Well Neville and Carsley are both the wrong side of 30 and Jags is 24 so medium to long term he is going to replace one or both of them. In the short term he is prob going to replace Hibbo in the first team and cover for Joey while he is away with Nigeria. With all that to look forward to I would guess he is worth holding out for and yes the rest of Moyes’ transfer activity may well depend on whether we get him or not.

he has a £4m release clause IF they are relegated. Utd want £6mil. They aren’t 100% relegated yet so the clause has not come into effect. As soon as it does, he signs. Did it not occur to you why nobody else has approached them officially, as its obvious he’s made his mind.

Not that hard to figure out is it.

All the players you mention are either over-rated or way over-priced (apart from muntari who i really think we missed out on so i’ll give you that one) and half of them haven’t gone anywhere, so how do you know we haven’t registered an interest??

Typical defeatist bullshit looking for amunition for another groundless shot at the club. Pathetic.

John I think you miss the point, what people are saying is that it is embarrassing that we are fighting ourselves and waiting to pay £4m for such an average and limited player. Surely our targets should be of a higher caliber than Jags ? I mean it doesn t say much for our ambition would you agree ?

Shaun, I think its all wel and good to say he is an average player BUT 4m is an average price; he is 24, English; on the fringe of the England squad; Versatile; consistently Utd’s best player in prem and championship (and Captain) and keen to come here cos he is hungry and has a lot to prove. Plus if Moyes gets an extra 20% out of him as he does with many of our signings he could be a better signing than he appears at present.

As for our ambition well that will be clearer at the start of the season when all the business is done. But I dont think wanting Jags is a bad sign per se. I think a lot of teams would have him and probably be willing to pay moreas well.
