Left Midfielder?

Comments (8)

After watchin the Under 21s tournament recently, I have been keeping my eye out to see any players who I feel would be good for Everton. One player that has caught my eye is Royston Drenthe of Holland. He is exactly what we need a young left winger who has pace, can cross the ball and score goals. He is currently playing his football in Holland with Feyenoord so maybe we could put Andy Van Der Meyde in the deal?

Yes, he's caught the eye of a number of people on the various Everton forums. Are you watching, Davey Moyes?!

He was looking awesome down the left side but the substitution Roy Beerens caught my eye as well. I have also seen D. Nuggent in action in all 4 games and although he is blue he is never worth 6+. As ever the English team is full of average and overrated players. If you want value for money just look at the other 3 semifinalists, combined they cost less then England

Not just Everton forums Lyndon, pretty much everyone with any interest in football has identified him as the best player in the tournament. I’ll say that again, the best player in the under-21 European Championship - i.e. he’ll be a Chelsea player a few days after the final.

Sorry to be pessimistic, but you know, Phil Bardsley is more our kind of player.

hahaha Andy van der Meyde in exchange for Royston Drenthe... you must think we’re mad in Rotterdam! We wouldn’t even want Van der Meyde if you gave him for free, the guy is an idiot.

I’ve posted a few times saying the majority of English or UK for that matter bred players are pants and that we should be looking further afield, it does seem to be at grass roots either failure to train or archaic training methods churning out a stream of carthorses. A few of the Dutch kids looked head a shoulders above anything the English put out and after I had finished laughing at another engerland team fail on penalties (is there any other way?) I imagine the likes of Arsenal or other sides with proper scouts picking up these gems, remember Peter Cech had a blinder at the under 21s and I mentioned him too, expect the quality to go elsewhere, we need to be on the boat not stood at the dockside watching it sail away.

Sadly I think I?d have to agree with Ben on this 1. I think Drenthe is bound to be going to 1 of the top teams in Europe if anywhere.

I?d like to think that Alan Irvine was out there to watch some of the Dutch team as possible signings rather than weighing up Dave Nugent. After watching him this tournament he looks decidedly average at most things, He?s a bit like James Beattie but with dark hair, do we really want to splash out £6m on him? We could probably buy some of Sebia U21?s best players with that, and how good do they look on the ball?

Nugent has been lookin very average, if we’re looking at any of the U21 strikers I think Lita has been outstanding.

Any club interested in buying Drenthe should know some things about the Feyenoord situation.

Last summer, the Feyenoord fans were sad to see the two starts (Dirk Kuyt and Salomon Kalou) being sold to Liverpool and Chelsea. The disappointment grew into frustration when out of the blue it suddenly came clear that the club was financially in appalling shape. Over 50-60% of the transfer money of Kuyt and Kalou had to be used to pay off debts. Frustration grew into sheer outrage when Feyenoord decided to get a benched striker from arch rivals Ajax as a replacement for Kuyt.

The fuming anger of the fans ultimately resulted in the resignation of the chairman and the board. Nevertheless the season ended in a tragedy: Feyenoord finished 9th in the league, missing European football for the first time in a lifetime.

Amidst all this misery, there is only tiny bit of hope: Royston Drenthe. If the board decides to sell him for a couple of million, the outrage of the Feyenoord fans could be even bigger than last year. As the club is desperately seeking investors, the last thing they need is another supporter revolt.

Therefore it is very unlikely that Drenthe will be sold, despite the poor financial state of the club. I think a bid of anything less than 8-9 million pounds will be rejected.
