£12M for Fernandes?

Just been reading the Portuguese sports paper "Record", and was surprised to see that Benfica are giving out only two options on Manuel Fernandes. Either buy him or don't buy him, no loans are available for this term. That's not the confusing thing though; what's confused me is, where does the £12m sterling price tag come from? Benfica have said that they will ONLY accept ?9M (That's Euros) for him ? if not he will be playing at Benfica next season! Strange disparity in price don't you think? He would cost half of what is being suggested back home!

Fernandes's price tag has been something of an enigma this summer and it seems as though the differing currencies has been either used as a tool to spin the price in an upward direction or has just caused confusion. Around the time the season finished, his value was reportedly ?12M (or roughly £8M). Like you say, if they only want ?9M (which is what, £6M?) then the pressure on Everton to do business would surely increase. Fernandes for less than West Ham just paid for Scott Parker and only £2M more than Jagielka's value? Yes, please!
I think this is probably due to the dual ownership issue Matt. My understanding is that Benfica only ’own’ 50% of the player, hence that fee is what they require for their ’half’ of his ’rights’. I guess it would follow that the company who own the other half would expect the same fee, hence £12m. Messy business.

That’s a good point, David. I hadn’t factored in his dual ownership. Like you say, messy...
David is wright. Benfica only owns 50% of the player. The other 50% are owned by Jorge Mendes, the FIFA agent who transfered Nani and Anderson to Man. United. Benfica asks ?9m for their 50%... And Manuel Fernandes is expected in Lisbon on 02/07 to start working with Benfica. Fernando Santos, Benfica’s coach, wants the player for the next season.
Cheers from Portugal!
Hi, Lucas. You are right, but WRIGHT is wrong. The right thing to write is RIGHT. ;-)
