The Mail Bag

For what little its worth

I am not normally one to start or contribute toward what may be little more than downunder rumour mongering yet it makes me wonder that, as Australia is a recognised world leader in sports medicine, why is Everton sending two 'experts' to check on Cahill? Could there be a bit more to local scuttlebut that Tiny is being well and truly worked over by a top four club. Our 'experts' could or should be more concerned about that rather than Tiny's big toe.

Cahill would not have to be tapped up.
Just an offer of more money would have him scuttling for his agent to open transfer talks. Why?
Because history dictates that nearly all of the Australian players in the prem are mercenary.
Viduka, Bosnic (remember him)and the guy who went to WHU just for the money.
Don’t write in Aussies and come over all patriotic, facts speak for themselves. A beter wage deal and it’s bye bye Timmy boy.

Shaun give us a bit more personal info and a visit from you could be welcome. I am an ex Dingle lad.
Dave Lynch, I agree with your comments yet for every Aussie mercenary I could name a dozen English ones.

There is nothing Poms can teach us about sports medicine. Every time Cahill gets called up for the national team, Moyes is there whingeing about us looking after his precious asset. It was the same leading up to the world cup and he turned out to be in top shape after a few weeks with the Australian ’Witchdoctors’ got at him after months of ’treatment’ at his club. Maybe they’re there to learn how the professionals do it. He will return in much better shape than when he left, that’s for sure.

Besides, after the disgraceful way Liverpool treated Craig Johnstone when it came to national team issues (pull on a gold jersey & you’re sacked!) why shouldn’t Aussies treat a few years in a foreign league on the other side of the world from home as a chance to make a few quid before coming home to raise your kids? Whaddya expect?

Tell you what i did expect. Bardass. An Aussie with a stupid psudonym like yours who knows nothing about the importance of what proper football means to people over here, spouting his mouth off.
Don’t ya just love em. Ungracefull in victory and even worse in defeat. Stick to what you know.ie. That rediculous excuse of a game you have the cheek to call (Aussie rules) football.

Dear oh Dear D Lynch, swallowed hook, line and sinker and hoisted by your own petard. You have obviously no idea about Australian Football whatsoever (and I?m not talking about Australian Rules). Football is finally getting its act together over here after decades of frustration with the results flowing (50,000+ fans at A-league matches, with most teams drawing larger crowds than the smaller Premier League teams). The quality is rapidly impoving and attracting a lot of international talent. The former competition was rubbish, full of ethnic based teams that had no wider support (Sydney Croatia, Sth Melbourn Hellas et al), now with the one city one team concept in place the masses who follow the national team are getting behind their clubs.

In Australia, the national team is everything and club sides are a distant second. We get the Championship on cable over here and the standard is no better than the A-league. Admittedly there is a long way to go, but the arrogance of English club football supporters (especially Premier League clubs) seems to know no bounds. The simple facts are that in Australia, sport science resources are pooled across all sports that receive government funding and our national squads receive the best of the best when it comes to treatment. We draw our squad from the Premier League, Serie A, Eredivisie and Bundersliga and the only manager that continually makes a fuss is Moyes. Says it all really.

Believe me Tom i swallowed nothing.
As you stated yourself. ’Football still has a long way to go’. Let’s see how it has fared in 10 yrs or so out there. The difference is, club football is everything to us and the national team is secondry to the vast majority of fans.
Our clubs are our identity and to be quite honest i couldn’t give a toss about sports science.
Calling us arrogant ? For the true meaning, look in the dictionary under Aussie.
