Not wanting to be pessimistic, or a harbinger of doom... but I'll be absolutely "gobsmacked" if Fellaini extends his contract.
The lad, and/or his advisors aren't daft and after seeing the writing on the wall with Pienaar, the compnay accounts, etc I would hazard a guess that, unless the club is sold, then Fellaini will be the "sale" that allows us to continue... sad but inevitably true I fear.

Brian, you're dead right, mate ? he's looked like a class act lately and must look around and think he can do much better than a sinking ship like Everton. It wont be a matter of money, more one of ambitions, and he's only a young man so, unless there's a takeover of the club and a substantial cash injection, then I agree he will be moving on rather soon.
Average players may be happy to stay at a club whose yearly ambition is to finish fourth from bottom of the 'Prem', but any player with ability and ambition will want more. There's no point burying your head in the sand; we now function as a club to maintain the status quo. After 41 years following my club home, away and abroad, I am starting to get very cynical... viva la revolucion!!!
Have to agree with Brian unfortunately. Would be surprised if he entended his contract but over-the-moon if he did. Either way it has to be sorted this summer. He can't be allowed to do a 'Pienaar'.
Kenwright will have to do a much better job of selling the future ambition of the club to Fellaini than he has done of selling the club to investors or buyers.
All depends on what type of Contract we are offering him. Let's not forget, Pienaar was offered a contract and probably would have signed it if it was more to his liking.
Just because we announce we are offering him one does not mean he will sign it. And with plenty of time to go on his current contract, I feel he himself will be in no rush to sign on the dotted line any time in the near future.
Hope he does sign an extension because, in my opinion, he has been awesome at times this season and will continue to get better the older he gets.
Apart from Rooney, our ex-stars turn out to be expensive bench warmers.
Wish I could've seen Pienaar's face when Kranjcer smashed the winner into the top corner last week. Third choice behind him and Bale, I reckon.
Fellaini, undoubted class... but for who as a regular starter? Good players get a chance at Everton and become better; hopefully Fellaini see's that.
He'll sign it as it will commission a larger fee and will bost his pay by I imagine at least £20,000 extra a week next season (£1.04m).
I have to agree with you, Brian here I don't see Fellaini singing with us and again, just like in the Pienaar situation, Arteta is to blame.
Pienaar left ? or rather, entertained the thought of leaving ? when he was not offered parity with Arteta and yet, week-in and week-out, he was playing better than him.
So I see the same thing happening again, especially with Chelsea sniffing. I'm sure Fellaini will want parity with Arteta ? and with good reason, because the lad has been better than Arteta; based on form this season, he should be getting more than our overated maestro.
Can't see him signing, nor should he to be honest.

One point we are all missing is that we do not have the money to offer him an improved contract!!!

Frankly, Fellaini is now too good for us. He would be welcome in virtually any midfield in Europe right now, he's become that good. I cannot possibly imagine why he would want to extend his contract at whatever wages we can offer him, and with no chance of CL football. We absolutely must sell him this summer, sadly ? I just hope that we get £25m+ for him, which is what he's worth.

Mike, I thought that Pienaar had said that it was about ambition and wanting to play in the CL, rather than money. He can't be blamed for that and neither would Fellaini if he chooses to go. Like you, I hope he stays.

Dan McKie ? Steve is quoting a writer in the Echo. But then again, our wage bill just has been butchered. Yobo, Yak, Vaughan and Pienaar are all out. That must be about £160k a week off the bill.

Roberto, I caught a portion of an interview with John Henry last weekend where he was extolling the 'beauty' (sic... or should that be 'sick'?) of Anfield. Given he has invested nothing more in LFC, I suspect that means they are staying at Anfield and 'making do'.
Ray Roche ? Yes, that's what he said, but for the same reason Darren Bent left Sunderland for Villa, I imagine 90% of Pienaar's choice came down to money... otherwise he would've gone to Chelsea wouldn't he?
If Everton could've offered him the money he wanted, I have no doubt he would've stayed.

Hate to say it but Fellaini`s sale may well be the means by which the Club is able to secure its future for the next season or so. But, if he is to realise his maximum worth, he MUST continue to play in his current ? and best ? role. Injuries to other players and experimentation have too often seen his talents misused. Now, handled right, he could prove our saviour.
Can't see any other outcome with Felli, we are simply now a selling club.

Jeremy (19) ? good to see you're one of the few not yet affected by the Fellaini love-in. Yes, he's playing well this season (at the level you'd expect for £15 million) but he's not the be-all and end-all of the club. If we sell him for some over-inflated fee, it's not as though he's a once-in-a-generation player. There's a whole load of defensive midfielders out there who could do a similar job to Fellaini.
Although Arteta has been playing badly this season, how much would you have to spend to replace his creative influence? Anyone better is playing for European big boys.
I hope he stays, this might sound childish but he is one of my favourite ever players.

Even Doddy has heard the penny drop... Black Bill isn't selling anytime soon ? no matter what bullshit he puts out at season ticket renewal o'clock (hmm... every year it's more bullshit), his master plan of destroying the club by selling everything can't last and he'll be up to it again this summer.
Trouble is now twofold: other clubs know we are deep in the shit (worst kept secret in the EPL) and those clubs will take the piss and know we need the money and we will have to take what's on offer.

I'm in agreement that the future doesn't look great based on the accounts and lack of transfers, but I dislike the unnecessary negativity/inaccuracy banded around, such as the £300,000 / week. Steve (11) says we need to save or the fact that we had to sell Lescott to stay afloat which was the headline in one paper today.
Truth is that Lescott was sold for £20M+ which did balance the books, but it overlooks the fact that if we had not sold him, we would not have brought in Bily, Heitinga or Distin.
The sad fact is we are living hand to mouth and just about within our means... but, as far as I understand, we are not losing massive amounts of money every year, nor do we need to sell someone significant every year to keep afloat... we only need to do that if Moyes wishes to spend money or increase the wage bill, or if some of our loans get called in.
Not a bright future, but doesn't seem like the end of the world either. Just sad that Moyes is having to break up his squad and rebuild again. And I agree that Felli will probably not wish to stay around even if the club could offer him an improved deal. The guy sounds like he wants to be winning things.

Convince him we can build a team around him, as I have posted before, MF & JR two big athletic mobile marauding midfielders (Petit and Viera style) will dominate football and at their ages for the next ten years.

Just at the moment I am pushed for time commentswise. I wanted to comment at lenght on the Ray Wilson thread above.
But the thought comes to me, however glorious the past may be, it is still the past and, given our seemingly bleak future, the past is just a nice stroll down memory lane.

Ian @28 are you Fellaini and Rodwell's agent? A little over the top in your assessment of our midfield duo there.
Why shouldn't he sign? I'm sured it will be improved wages and a nice fee for him and his agent.

Actually agree with Ian Smitham. About Fellaini at least. Think he is one of the only players I have seen at Everton (Shrek aside) who has the ability and potential to go on to be one of the best players in the world in his position!

Then again... he may feel big loyality to Moyes for giving him the opportunity, protecting and sticking up for him in his first season, and while he was out injured... If he extends, it will give him a pay packet on par with Arteta, and that will suit both player and club I would think.

Have to say as soon as I saw we were in talks about a contract I thought it was just a case of preparing the PR machine.
He isn't prepared to sign for longer... He wants to let his contract run for another 18 months before deciding... We can't risk another Pienaar situation so we're cashing in.

Fellaini has started to show some quality, but I can't believe some of the things that have been said about him over the last few days.
Things like, there is no better defensive - midfielder in the world at the moment.

I think the club should adopt a policy for high value players that if they don't sign a new deal with 2 years left on the existing contract they should be sold.
In the case of Felliani, if he doesn't sign this summer, sell him to the highest bidder and move on.
Looking back at the Pienaar situation last summer, the prices quoted were above £10m. Assuming someone would've paid that, did having him for the extra 4½ months really warrant losing around £8m?

But Martin, the only people quoting those prices were the journos. Not one solidly reported bid came in for him.
He thought he was going to be a star in the World Cup and get offers galore, he stunk the place out and then his slimy agent started singing a different tune, then it was a saving process for the agent to get a little bit of money into his own arse pocket and flogged him around like a whore and, as usual, the lion from the wizard of Oz bit, there was interest at the end from Chelsea but no-one else (that was reported).
