That win against City has (hopelessly and unfortunately) got me thinking we could pull off another top-six finish if we win our last two, which is of course, easier said than done... but the Kopites' and the Spuds' fixtures are tough and they also have to play each other.
So, however unlikely it may be, the lads still need to be trying their hardest to win the last two games -- both against teams that have nothing riding on the games any longer. We've got seventh in the bag, even if we lose the last two, so an all-out attacking mindset would be nice and the reward could be a second finish over the Reds in the Premier League era. That home game against Chelsea could yet be a big one.

Have to agree with David as I ran out of straws to clutch to quite a few games ago........Yes it is.
Ian, I think it's unlikely, but we could still finish 6th with the right results which could mean we still qualify for Europe. I know it's a 'BIG' if and I just hope the team don't give up as quickly as some people on here. It's been a very frustrating season but we can still qualify for Europe with 2 games to go so it obviously hasn't been all bad.
I'll let you know when Shite have played tonight.
In the meanwhile can I have a rant? When did this stupid fashion for calling Spurs 'Spuds' start? It's fucking infantile.
At best we'll get 4 points from the remaining two games. 55 points probably. 7th it'll be. Yes season is over.
Correct me if I'm wrong but if Liverpool still have to play Spurs, then, even if we were to win the last two games, we cannot finish above both of them. So the question is academic!

Ray, you are indeed wrong. If we win our last two matches & Spurs draw with RS, & they both lose their other two matches, we would finish ahead of Spurs on goal difference & Rs would be a point behind in 7th place. Mind you, it's also mathematically possible for us to finish as low as 10th. Of course the above should be read without being aware that RS are currently 3 to the good over Fulham!
Our nearest and dearest have still got an outside chance of finishing 4th.
If Spuds go tits tits up, we could be 2 points behind them on the last day when we play Chelsea and they play Brum.
Problem: in order for this to happen and have any significance, Liverpool have to overtake 4th from Sitteh. I'd rather just finish 7th and leave things the way they are.

We have fiinished 4th before, and look what happened then. We can't even compete in the Europa/Uefa cup.
@Pat - I think I always just want to finish as high up the table as possible.
And imagine the resurgence of "this could be our year" from the RS. The expectation might just crush them again.
Plus they still have to suffer 19 from SAF so ... let's get what we can for ourselves, and not worry about the RS too much?
Finally if we're even close to 6th and 6th becomes a Europa spot, it makes those tightly lost games a lot more interesting to discuss ad nauseum alongside the impending summer transfer debacles :-P

Jamie - it's just we don't have a squad capable of competing in Europe. We only just manage to finish a season with 11 fit players with no cup runs and 38 league games, and I just don't want us to get tonked in Europe and suffer all the Easy Jet jokes from gloty hunting kopites again.
I just don't get it Joe. What's the point in bothering at all. Why don't we get relegated on purpose next season so we have a good chance of winning the Championship. Why bother with the League Cup or the FA Cup? We always do shite in them. It doesn't make sense.
The more we play in Europe, the better we'll get, surely. You've mentioned our knockout of the Champions League countless times but, without a terrible decision from the ref, we might have qualified and had the riches that come with it.
Everton are not going to catch Liverpool. They are 5-1 up so they have won meaning Everton can get 57 points so they could catch Tottenham who have 56 points but they would have to loose both their remaining games.
I'm not getting into a slanging match, Jamie, it's all about opinions. You mention about the ref in the qualifier for the CL. Even if we went through, how far would we have gone with Kilbane, Bent (sadly not Darren) and Beattie?
Yes we can all fantasize and hope and wish etc, the biggest crime of all was Kenwright not even trying to support Moyes that summer to actually qualify and get in the Champions League. The twat hasn't done so since, so, every year, our manager tries to get us back into Europe with an even smaller squad than the year before.
This has all drifted on from the question of the post, which is still Yes as David Hallwood on Post 1 said. We'll have to agree to disagree with the rest Jamie.
It's all over and we've got months of speculation over who we will sign in the summer... which will include Jack Shite and Joe Fuck.
Still, better than walkin the streets, init... I just hope the freebies we get are ok.
We're nailed on for 7th. A squad a year older. Can't think of any grounds for celebration except Coleman coming on. Apart from that, I think we are a weaker team now than at the end of last season.

Moyes is husbanding fairly poor resources very well, but because of lack of investment, we are getting further and further away from realistically challenging for and being able to compete in the Champions League.
Well, that was me told with Liverpool's result... finish sixth above Spurs, anyone?
Ian now that Galen from Planet of the Apes is fucked it would be nice if we could finish above that slimy twat Rednapp. We'd have to play our next two games for 90 minutes with the same fight we saw second half against Man Shitty.

Ignoring that we'd prefer The Shite to get relegated... if they beat Spurs on Saturday and prior to that Spurs lose to City .... both results well attainable. We would "only" have to beat West Brom (possible) and then Chelsea (that's the sticking point) and it would mean Spurs would have to beat (at least draw) with Brum.
So, in terms of what we expected, yes, our season is over... but it's still possible for us to qualify for the Europa. Fingers crossed.
Jamie, particularly@22. The league was over in October. Our exit from the FA Cup was the lowest point in Moyes reign but the League Cup has never seemed to interest him. Why? We will never qualify, under the current regime, for the Champions League again. We must look at the two knockout competitions and treat them with priority.
In my view, top ten with a cup is better than 7th with nothing. This is where we are now. Top ten with a cup is achievable.
Christ sake, what is it with Liverpool and Europe. Has Harry taken a back hander?
Andy, you never mentioned the league being over in October. You said our season was over. I fail to see how our season could be over in October when even after Liverpool's win tonight, we could still qualify for Europe. I'm not daft enough to think we will but mathematically we still can.
I don't know which cup exit you mean but I'd have a rethink if you're talking about the Reading game being the lowest point of Moyes's reign. There's been far worse. As for the rest, show me an Evertonian who wouldn't take a cup and 10th over 7th and nothing. It goes without saying.
Just let it go, Ian. I would rather not make Europe in that Mickey Mouse competition that is the Europa League and dream of a tilt next season. And yes, Riquelme will be part of the squad next season!!

Yes the RS boom-bust cycle is well underway again.
Currently they are in the "Wait till next season " phase (Jan - May) which is the long climb back from bust to the peak of the boom.
This is followed by the "This is our year" phase (June - August) when they are convinced they have the best players in every position and the peak of the boom is reached. This is helped by the fact that no football is actually being played.
Phase 3 is known as "It's on!", and is the Sep - Oct period when the realisation slowly begins to creep in that they are nowhere near as good as they thought they were.
Finally, phase 4 (Nov - Dec) when the last remnants of their title challenge die out and the full bust position is reached by Christmas at the latest.
Repeat ad infinitum...
I wasn't aware that our excellent neighbors won tonight, sorry to hear that. Never mind... City for the Champions League place and yet enough year of nothing at Anfield so fuck them quite honestly.
Everton on 51 look good for 7th place, so I'm guessing that's it for this season: had it's moments, the Reading embarrassment thankfully moved out of focus quickly. Moyes has had nine years now, and although done a good job with limited resources, has not won any actual bona fide silverware.
What's next season going to bring? I wish I knew. Everybody enjoy the summer vacations.
The shite beat Fulham 5-2, and so it now means that we have a more realistic chance to take over Spurs for the 6th place (they still have to face Sitteh and the shite). According to the rules, 6th place will be given a Europa League place only: (1) Man City fails to qualify for CL; and (2) Man City wins the FA Cup. Given the current circumstance, it is more likely that the Shite will get the CL place rather than Spurs (which is in a slump). Do you want that scenario? Well...

Remember the many many posts on this site a little over 9 months ago predicting (gulp) a title challenge?! And, no doubt, the same voices will be out in force again in a couple of month's time too!
The answer is that Spurs have to lose ALL of their final three games.

Liverpool (A)
Birmingham (H)
Whilst I can see Spurs losing two of the three, losing to Birmingham at home would be a massive surprise.
Add into the mix that Everton would have to win their last two games:
WBA (A)
Chelsea (H)
it's all theoretically possible and will come down to two highly charged final games of the season. If only it were in our own gift.
It's fickle I know but I wouldn't mind seeing Spurs finish 6th and not qualify for Europe, Hate Awwry and I would like to see his new sub, Pienaar sitting on the bench wondering what he has done.. Could have been playing all the games a season instead of waiting for the Worthless Cup to get a game.
The only down side is that the Shite would have to have to finish 5th and we wopuldn't hear the last of the King Kenny chants.....wankers

Can't see that happening this time Paddy (#36). Last year we had all that 24 year rule business, but since then a huge dose of realism has set in for many. There will be no boom for us again without any dosh. Whereas you can bet that as soon as Dalglish gets his job permanently the rot will set in again across the park, and the present boom will turn to bust.
