Season 2011-12
The Mail Bag
Why is it the right decision, Seamie?
According to Coleman calling off the Spurs game was..."The right decision tho"
First of all, he's missed out the 'ugh!' Or did he anticipate that would be the response of many Evertonians to his reasonings. So come on, Seamus ? why is it the right decision to postpone ONLY the Everton game, when Spurs had earlier in the week announced that the game would go ahead?
Subsequent to their announcement, no more disturbances in the whole of London, never mind Tottenham. What more did they know this morning that they didn't know earlier in the week?
I'm sure you can guess from my tone that I have spent a small fortune to take my whole family down to London for the weekend (my only way of justifying going to the game). So no question of refunds. And I'll have to go anyway and kick my heels around London on Saturday afternoon.
Oh yes, right decision tho!
I'm sorry to pick on Coleman. I think he's great and his tweets are usually great. But this particular statement has infuriated me.
It's not the right decision. regardless of how out-of-pocket I may be. It's a ridiculous decision. And players should be more sensitive to the dedication of those fans who plan their summer around the fixture list. (Cahill came out with similar drivel.) From all I've heard there is scant justification for postponing this game on the strength of an incident almost a full week beforehand.
Not the right decision tho.

Regarding the twitter comments of Seamus, I suspect they are similar to those of most footballers. Vacuous bullshit from vastly overpaid young men with overdeveloped senses of entitlement.
I admire Seamus ,by the way.
If it did go ahead there could have been a problem - now it isn't there won't. How can that be anything but the right decision?
Some lost their cars, others lost their businesses, and a few lost their lives. Unfortunately now you and others have lost money on tickets and arranged trips to London.
Maybe the game could go ahead with no repercussions, but can you imagine if they didn't cancel it and then there were further problems and riots? You're country has suffered from enough football disasters without needing another one.
Obviously there is always going to some risk involved in any stadium event with 30,000+ people present. This risk has now been exacerbated and multiplied by the current civil unrest and stretched police force.
Allowing the game to proceed at this point would be somewhat risky, to say the least. When it comes to health and safety the local governments will always err on the side of cautiousness, lest somebody sue them.
Sorry about your weekend by the way.
I've booked flights over the years, planned trips etc and had to forego them because matches were postponed because of Sky, weather and other reasons. It's one of the hazards of not living locally that you might not be used to.
Sometimes in life things don't go as planned I suggest you get on with it and suck it up !
Dunno why you would have a go at the players as I'm sure they are keen to get going too (I know Seamie is injured) but they have to try show some maturity and leadership, nor sure it's fair to blame them for being out of touch on this one.
So sorry for the inconvenience and cost for you and other travelling fans but think of those that have lost lives, homes and livelihoods.
And look on the bright side -
we won't be bottom of the table (unless evey other game's a score draw?) and...
we won't be last on MOTD
What an idiot. The resources in the area are already stretched to the limit; police and other services are being drafter in from all over the country to plug the gap.
I have close friends in the affected area. Throughout the country, people have lost their homes, businesses, communities and relatives do to this nonsense.
But hey Geoff, as long as you've got things in perspective in your little world then that's ok isn't it.
I'm genuinely ashamed to be associated (albeit only through a shared interest in a football club), with this inconsiderate idiot.
Firstly, I thought this was a website for those of an EFC leaning. Seems it's more for apologists of the Met!!
Second, I never knew so many Evertonians had friends and relatives down the Seven Sisters Road. I bow to their superior local knowledge and accept what they say..
BUT I maintain there is still an issue here.
I thought the game was sure to be off earlier in the week, but Tottenham issued a statement that the game would go ahead. Each night following I was glad to hear of no trouble in the London (Yes alright, perhaps I am a little narrow in my EFC vision, but hoping the match goes ahead does not mean I am unsympathetic to those who have suffered in the riots)
So what exactly happened to change matters. Yes, the proximity of disturbances to the Ground was an issue, but Spurs knew that earlier in the week.
Alright, I'm sorry to drag Seamie into it. I was just angry. I didn't expect the vitriol from certain individuals. I know we're all a bit worried about the season to come. I didn't realise that some Blues were happier if we didn't play.
I totally accept that my expense is nothing compared to those who've suffered. But, I'm sorry to say I'm still not convinced the game had to be called off. It still smacks of tokenism.
Yes it is me Eugene. We were in Stokie when the last riots took place. They were more socially conscious those riots. They didn't take place anywhere near the football season!
I'm sure the sterotypical comments regarding scousers are meant to be taken in jest : match cancelled to avoid unnecessary disappointment for travelling scousers finding there's nothing left worth stealing - boom, boom!
The police don't have the resources in that area right now to give any serious commitment to a football match and I'm not sure that an influx of several thousand scousers would be too welcome!
On a sad footnote my mates newsagents has gone it was ransacked then torched and he doesn't know if he'll be bothered to re-open it even when he gets his payout.
So Geoff let it lie mate, before you say anything me and the lads had also spent money we could barely afford on travel and accommodation, we're still going to help my mate clean up.
Anyways, QPR home and Blackburn away before the season comes to a halt again. Got to be 6 points!!! Surely??? Hmmm deja vu of 10/11 Blackburn away, Wolves home...
I once mentioned on here I quite admired Red Adair.
I got death threats and was called all the Kopite cunts going (I jest of course)
Yeah Stokie went up in flames in 81.
I remember hoping that twat of a landlord (Hassle?) got his shop smashed to fuck.
'Appy diiiize
Anyway, hope all's good.
(and just crack the whip with these TW bums, they're like big dogs, got to be firm with 'em, show 'em who's boss)
For all those saying we should now get 3 points at home - I hope you're right but we'll prob play for the solid point...................................
If you have booked train tickets then I believe Virgin Trains are offering a refund for train tickets on production of a match ticket.
Just a thought.
Next time tho, blame David Moyes. It's all his fault.
It's only a game of football at the end of the day ? one we'd have lost too, so thank yourself lucky that unless everyone else draws, we'll not be bottom on Saturday night....
You need to put this in perspective mate.
Kenwright's fault all this.......
On the other hand, I bet the rioting chavs would've been rubbing their hands together at the thought of us lot pitching up on Saturday.
(and a touch rabid by the sound of him).
Grrrrrrrr
GET TO FUCK!!! (boot!!)
Whiiiiine.
You guys should be directing your anger at the little bastards who created his problem .
Brilliant stuff.
Even better stuff! Best article I've read this summer.
Good links! Some of the comments after the articles are just so bizarre! I am constantly amazed at how daft some people are.
Yes Tottenham is a crime scene and it's a real pisser if you had plans to go but as posters have said there are a lot of people suffering a great deal more.
I work with Cyril (nice one son) Knowles brother and was dreading work the Monday after that game....his brother is a really nice bloke and I would have hated taking the piss after stuffing them 1-1

The players would have looked ridiculously out-of-touch and insensitive if they'd complained about the game being postponed in the circumstances so I don't blame them for toeing the company line here.
Would've been nice if they'd looked into postponing the game til Monday as an option though to avoid fixture congestion down the track for both us and Spurs.
The optimist in me is looking forward to a Goodison game first up against promoted opposition.
Why couldn't they have arranged that for us, or is Goodison not ready either?
ps: Thats not a dig at the club as they obviously weren't expecting to have a game this early.
The very obvious reason is that the Met, the Home Office and Number 10 do not want several thousand Evertonians in London this weekend because in their eyes we are all looters and criminals. It has nothing to do with the area being a crime scene, the place not being cleaned up in time etc etc.
If it was Tottenham vs Chelsea or Arsenal the game would go on. The right thing to do if there was a security issue or if there was an issue of cleaning things up would have been to postpone the start of the season for a week to give things a chance to cool down.
Right now, the police are too busy kicking in doors and don't want us thieving scousers down there yet. Every other game is on, but we are being penalized. Outrageous.
I (un)happily admit to the same 'paranoia' as Peter.
I trust NOTHING that comes from politicians and/or the police.
In fact I might be worse as I believe anyone (barring weddings or funerals) wearing a suit to do business, is probably out to con me.
And to quote the 70's t-shirt (often advertised back of the NME, next to the Loons ad) "Just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get me".
Where were they when the riots were going on? Nowhere, and now it's too late, they want to do something about it. Now it's all stopped!! I have been to the scene that apparently is stopping the game going ahead and I could clear it up myself in a fucking hour!!!
There is a good reason why our game could not be switched to Goodison this weekend. There is also another Premier League we share a city with. They are playing this weekend. In their home stadium. Which is not all that far from ours. So the police might - just might - have vetoed that idea, were it ever to have been proposed.
Now some people here take offence to your post, and seem angry but I am supportive as I support a fellow Evertonian.:-)
Lets hope you will get some of it refunded.
Every cloud and all that.......................
So I'm afraid yes we can be bottom.

Have any other riots of lately been so close to any other stadium?
I can only sympathise with people who have made prior arrangements for the game and have lost out, e.g. train fairs, hotels etc.
