Why is it the right decision, Seamie?

 78 Comments: First  |  Last

According to Coleman calling off the Spurs game was..."The right decision tho"

First of all, he's missed out the 'ugh!' Or did he anticipate that would be the response of many Evertonians to his reasonings. So come on, Seamus ? why is it the right decision to postpone ONLY the Everton game, when Spurs had earlier in the week announced that the game would go ahead?

Subsequent to their announcement, no more disturbances in the whole of London, never mind Tottenham. What more did they know this morning that they didn't know earlier in the week?

I'm sure you can guess from my tone that I have spent a small fortune to take my whole family down to London for the weekend (my only way of justifying going to the game). So no question of refunds. And I'll have to go anyway and kick my heels around London on Saturday afternoon.

Oh yes, right decision tho!

I'm sorry to pick on Coleman. I think he's great and his tweets are usually great. But this particular statement has infuriated me.

It's not the right decision. regardless of how out-of-pocket I may be. It's a ridiculous decision. And players should be more sensitive to the dedication of those fans who plan their summer around the fixture list. (Cahill came out with similar drivel.) From all I've heard there is scant justification for postponing this game on the strength of an incident almost a full week beforehand.

Not the right decision tho.

Perhaps it's because the riots have taken place on the steps of the football ground. The local area to this is a bit of a builders site. The council won't be able to clear it up in time.

Have any other riots of lately been so close to any other stadium?

I can only sympathise with people who have made prior arrangements for the game and have lost out, e.g. train fairs, hotels etc.

Look mate, you're just another victim of the riots.

Some lost their cars, others lost their businesses, and a few lost their lives. Unfortunately now you and others have lost money on tickets and arranged trips to London.

Maybe the game could go ahead with no repercussions, but can you imagine if they didn't cancel it and then there were further problems and riots? You're country has suffered from enough football disasters without needing another one.

Obviously there is always going to some risk involved in any stadium event with 30,000+ people present. This risk has now been exacerbated and multiplied by the current civil unrest and stretched police force.

Allowing the game to proceed at this point would be somewhat risky, to say the least. When it comes to health and safety the local governments will always err on the side of cautiousness, lest somebody sue them.

Geoff, damn inconveniencing for you and very irritating but that link on the main article linking to the Spurs' fan's perspective must surely give you some perspective also. It doesn't seem like the decision was taken lightly.

I've booked flights over the years, planned trips etc and had to forego them because matches were postponed because of Sky, weather and other reasons. It's one of the hazards of not living locally that you might not be used to.

Sometimes in life things don't go as planned I suggest you get on with it and suck it up !

Dunno why you would have a go at the players as I'm sure they are keen to get going too (I know Seamie is injured) but they have to try show some maturity and leadership, nor sure it's fair to blame them for being out of touch on this one.

So sorry for the inconvenience and cost for you and other travelling fans but think of those that have lost lives, homes and livelihoods.

I think his statement was more to do with the fact that around the ground wasn't safe and is still a crime scene. Do you want him and the players to kick off to try get it played and then someone gets hurt or even worse.. But as long as you get to see the game then its ok! Think about the people down there who now have nowhere to live!!! Your not the first to be affected like this and wont be the last.. Think about the dutch fans who came over for the friendly.. Whooahhh!! OK! OK! So I was fed up and looking for a way to vent my frustration. Perhaps there is a justification, but my crime here is that I wanted to watch Everton play. A few points though.
Firstly, I thought this was a website for those of an EFC leaning. Seems it's more for apologists of the Met!!
Second, I never knew so many Evertonians had friends and relatives down the Seven Sisters Road. I bow to their superior local knowledge and accept what they say..
BUT I maintain there is still an issue here.
I thought the game was sure to be off earlier in the week, but Tottenham issued a statement that the game would go ahead. Each night following I was glad to hear of no trouble in the London (Yes alright, perhaps I am a little narrow in my EFC vision, but hoping the match goes ahead does not mean I am unsympathetic to those who have suffered in the riots)
So what exactly happened to change matters. Yes, the proximity of disturbances to the Ground was an issue, but Spurs knew that earlier in the week.
Alright, I'm sorry to drag Seamie into it. I was just angry. I didn't expect the vitriol from certain individuals. I know we're all a bit worried about the season to come. I didn't realise that some Blues were happier if we didn't play.
I totally accept that my expense is nothing compared to those who've suffered. But, I'm sorry to say I'm still not convinced the game had to be called off. It still smacks of tokenism.
Yes it is me Eugene. We were in Stokie when the last riots took place. They were more socially conscious those riots. They didn't take place anywhere near the football season!

I must sympathise with Geoff & others who have laid out for travel, & possibly hotels, that the match has been cancelled so late in the day. The statements earlier in the week confirming the match would go ahead seemed ill-considered & irresponsible, imho. The eventual cancellation came as no surprise, other than the timing.

I'm sure the sterotypical comments regarding scousers are meant to be taken in jest : match cancelled to avoid unnecessary disappointment for travelling scousers finding there's nothing left worth stealing - boom, boom!

I've got a mate who has/had a newsagents round there and as has been posted earlier it's still a crime scene and yes Geoff mate they've still been kicking off around there only not on the scale as the first few nights.
The police don't have the resources in that area right now to give any serious commitment to a football match and I'm not sure that an influx of several thousand scousers would be too welcome!
On a sad footnote my mates newsagents has gone it was ransacked then torched and he doesn't know if he'll be bothered to re-open it even when he gets his payout.
So Geoff let it lie mate, before you say anything me and the lads had also spent money we could barely afford on travel and accommodation, we're still going to help my mate clean up.

I was quietly optimistic about Spurs away first game. When I say 'quietly' I mean I didn't think we would get beat... I'm not necessarily saying we would win so I had Everton at +1 handicap on my accumulator.

Anyways, QPR home and Blackburn away before the season comes to a halt again. Got to be 6 points!!! Surely??? Hmmm deja vu of 10/11 Blackburn away, Wolves home...

Although the area around Tottenham is bad, it is not like a war zone that keeps getting quoted and it certainly is nowhere near as dangerous on the streets as after the Broadwater Farm Riots. The local community has been hit hard and an early return to normality would be much better for everyone (apart from Haringey council and/or the local police it seems). Local businesses need matchday revenue as soon as possible and a lot of residents would prefer 35,000+ football fans on the streets rather than rioters and looters.

At the very least, it's pretty easy to see that our game was the one that was at the most risk of postponement.

The players would have looked ridiculously out-of-touch and insensitive if they'd complained about the game being postponed in the circumstances so I don't blame them for toeing the company line here.

Would've been nice if they'd looked into postponing the game til Monday as an option though to avoid fixture congestion down the track for both us and Spurs.

The optimist in me is looking forward to a Goodison game first up against promoted opposition.

The postponement of the Spurs Everton season opener is a slap in the face for all Everton fans ? and it is a political decision, not a logistical one.

The very obvious reason is that the Met, the Home Office and Number 10 do not want several thousand Evertonians in London this weekend because in their eyes we are all looters and criminals. It has nothing to do with the area being a crime scene, the place not being cleaned up in time etc etc.

If it was Tottenham vs Chelsea or Arsenal the game would go on. The right thing to do if there was a security issue or if there was an issue of cleaning things up would have been to postpone the start of the season for a week to give things a chance to cool down.

Right now, the police are too busy kicking in doors and don't want us thieving scousers down there yet. Every other game is on, but we are being penalized. Outrageous.

Where were they when the riots were going on? Nowhere, and now it's too late, they want to do something about it. Now it's all stopped!! I have been to the scene that apparently is stopping the game going ahead and I could clear it up myself in a fucking hour!!!

Andy, Monday night at 7.45. OS gives all detail, if you need more info that I can chase - let me know. Seems full first team is coming - not the usual reserves that make it over here.

Nick, If all other matches finish as draws we will be exactly joint bottom with Spurs and even though we have the alphabetical advantage we will be in the bottom three whatever way you look at it.

So I'm afraid yes we can be bottom.
