Barkley or Gueye, who will shine?

 23 Comments: First  |  Last

Following a long and boring pre-season we now await Everton to kick off the new season against QPR at home... I'm looking forward to see if Moyes can give us a new first team player out of the youngsters we have.

Now I have a feeling that he will go for the safe alternative and give Barkley the most game time, as he is kind of a safe bet as he has the most quality to begin with.

Next to Barkley, I will tip Gueye as the next candidate to shine this season. I think we will see the same amount of game time being given to Vellios and Gueye. That is my hope at least, as I feel Vellios could be our new Duncan Ferguson in a way, and certainly a much more upcoming and exiting option then Peter Crouch would ever be.

Can Gueye hack it at this level? That is another question, and I do have doubts about him being a good enough passer of the ball as well as having enough pace in order for him to grab hold of the left midfield position. Currently we don't seem to have many options other than Arteta and Osman, so it will be difficult for Moyes to find a good enough option.

I have found out that Everton is still a big part of my life after this boring pre-season; no matter how little we spend on players, I will still love this club and the passion I have is shared best on this site rather than the official website of Everton as they censor every negative thing you say.

I value the passion people here have for this club and I just want to thank the guys that runs this site as you do a great job and long may it continue.

Haha you have doubts as to whether Gueye has enough pace to hold down the left mid position at Everton? Well, who are the alternatives? Osman, Bily?

Ok I agree he has more pace than Bily, I think he has the ability, but I don't think he will get the chance to prove himself. In order for him to show his skills he must be allowed to play to his strenghts. Moyes is too defensive so he would be running back to defend each time we lose the ball.

There are no alternatives other than Arteta in my opinion. Osman is a maybe as he needs to hit top form. Also they both need the whole team to back them up when going forward.

Given that there will no more additions to the squad (& assuming Yobo & Yakubu will be out before the window closes) and knowing Moyes selections for the past 9-10 years, he will pick from the following squad of players:

Striker: 1 of Saha, Beckford, Vellios (with McAleny & Hope getting cameo 5 minutes when we are 3-0 up against the likes of QPR, Wigan, Swansea, etc)
Attacking Midfield: 2 out of: Cahill, Bily, Osman, Anichebe, Gueye & Coleman
3 out of the holding/play-making midfield of:
Arteta, Fellaini, Rodwell, Heitinga, Barkley
The defence picks itself: Baines, Distin/Heitinga, Jagielka, Neville/Hibbert.

This could be a breakthrough year for: Barkley, Vellios, Gueye, Rodwell.

Based on current injuries, suspensions and form, I think Moyes will pick this team for the QPR game:

Saha
Osman, Cahill
Fellaini, Rodwell, Heitinga
Baines, Distin, Jagielka, Neville
Howard
Subs: Beckford, Anichebe, Vellios, Barkley, Baxter Hibbert, Mucha

I would be hugely impressed if Moyes were to pick Barkley ahead of Heitinga, but I dont see that happening.

I too would like to see Barkley start but I think he'll play his love child Anichebe on the right wing ahead of Heitinga.

I think Ajay is right in his starting 11 against QPR. With the exception of Baines, that team has no width or pace and I can't see us creating too many chances. 10 men behind the ball, at home against QPR is a depressing way to start the season.

I think that it will be down to the injury list, what decides the team he plays v QPR.
With Billy suspended and the injury's to Arteta, and Coleman(although misses first two games thru suspension) he will hope the lads come thru the friendly with Bohemians being played this Monday.
I do feel that Barklay will play, especially after his first half showing in the Goodison friendly..

Jimmy -You ask can Gueye "hack it at this level",

At what level exactly?

OUR level?

Making up the numbers level?

EPL also-rans level?

Well I haven't seen much of him but I'd say.. absolutely!

He seems like nothing special. A bit 'ploddy' and ordinary. Not the absolute worst layer I've seen and a million miles from the best. He seems a little inconsistent and his concentration doesn't seem great.

Consequently, I think Mr Gueye and Everton under DM and BK are MADE for each other.

Eugene if we are EPL also rans then mightn't over three quarters of the premiership say the same? I suppose we are all making up the numbers

Thank God not all fans are as excitable as you!

The only way Moyes will give them two lads the chance to shine is when he orders them to polish there boots.

Cameo roles for the both of em.

Due to our manager being attack and flair minded. (Cough, ahem, rolls eyes skyward)

Jimmy if you saw the DC United game, you would know it was quite the opposite. Barkley was playing very deffensive early on to assist Colemen, but Moyes was the one telling him to stop being so defensive and to get further up the field. So more bullshit from the Moyes bashers as per usual on this site.

Although it would be a good trait to have if a player tracked back when they lost the ball and helped the team, its called team work, something the top players like Rooney do all the time.

The team against QPR has to be 4-4-2.

Howard

Neville Jags Distin Baines

Barkley Fellaini Osman Gueye

Saha Beckford

This is a good side and should be given a go against QPR.

I know this won,t be the team selection but a nice 4-0 victory to start the season would give Kenwright and Moyes a get out of jail free card and the transfer window neglect would be forgiven.

Yes, Cahill can come on to replace Saha in the 70th minute and score our 4th.

Correction, Alan... McAleny & Hope won't get their cameo appearances when we are three-nil DOWN with five minutes to go... as Moyes will bring on Hibbert in a situation like that. And I wish I were joking.

Sam Hoare 10 - The question Jimmy asked was, is Gueye good enough 'to hack it at this level'.

I thought about the level, decided he was and gave my reasons why.

You then say..

"Eugene if we are EPL also rans then mightn't over three quarters of the Premier League say the same? I suppose we are all making up the numbers".

Yes, I suppose we are.

And?

Sorry, do you have an ACTUAL point re Gueye's level or do you just get 'excitable' if anyone posts anything other than 'COYB!'?

Thank God all fans aren't as easily sidetracked from a post as you.

Eugene, I think your assesment of Gueye is good as up to now, but I belive he can be coached to become a Saha look-a-like. He has goals in him that we saw earlier in pre-season.

Ian, Post.13. I was talking about Gueye being forced backwards and that I think he should be just more in a offensive role, and not be forced back all the time. Perhaps in the Cahill role.
Who are you to say I am a Moyes basher? Here I was wanting to discuss about Barkley, Gueye and Vellios and you turn the whole thing into a Moyes BASHING. S hame on you for destroying a fine debate! Why dont you stop with the insults next time someone tries to give something new into the toffeewebe debate!!!

Jimmy (22)

That's quite a display of self-righteousness for someone who recently dismissed an entire article as "poor and boring". And yes, I am aware that having seen others' reaction to your post, you later back tracked and tried to claim that you said that purely to get more people to post on the topic.

Part of me genuinely wonders if you are taking the piss or if you are just that blind to your own hypocrisies.
