Would you sell Beckford

 41 Comments: First  |  Last

So Svens been knocking on Moyes's door asking to buy Beckford, knowing that the club are short of a bob or two, thinking that we would sell our players on the cheap. The same Sven who took the Yak on loan last year but didn't want to part with the cash at the end of last season to take him full time.

I'd like to ask one and all... would you sell Beckford and for what price?

Having spoken to some diehards who went to the States and the games in Germany and Ireland, they claim that Becks has not had a good pre-season and would let him go for about £5M. Sorry but I just can't see the sense in letting go a player who I think has a lot to offer and with a second good season in the Premier Leageue, could well be worth 3 to 4 times or even more than the £4M/£5M that is on offer now.

I'd even give him a lift to Leicester!! Unless of course were happy to have championship standard players at our club!!

Becford needs to play in a 4-4-2 formation to be a good asset to us. If Moyes doesn't give him game time in that formation then we may as well sell him.

Sell Beckford? Why not sell rubbish like Anichebe? Use the $ to buy a speedy winger and Beckford will score a few goals more.

Not on your life. If we were in a luxurious position of having other moneys to buy players, well maybe. But Beckford has goals in him.

We sell Beckford for £3mil, then what? Could we get a better replacement for the same money? I doubt it.

Is sell Anichebe just to get him off the wage book, but no one wants him.

Anyway, I think Beckford will score even more goals this season, and yeah sure he will miss a ton, but I'd rather a striker that missed a few, than a striker who never even gets a shot off.

Good luck to Beckford say I.

Beckford has great pace which most of our players lack. He's a real poacher. His goal against Chelsea at the final day of last season was awesome.

Sell him? No.

It's a good job it's Leicester and not some one with real money.

Forest and Leicester are just chancers hoping for a bargain.

If we take as read that if Beckford had been at say Reading last year he would have....a) had more game time and b) scored more goals.

So the figure that they got for Long is a start point.

And also...c) that if anyone comes along for ANY player and starts stacking up the cash ala Lescott, they will be gone.

I would rather Jags go than Beckford as it is always harder to score than defend.

This is an interesting one. I know stats can be manipulated to suit, but his ratio of goals scored to minutes played is up their with the best, surprised, I was. Imagine if he scored 25% of the large number of sitters missed and a few decent assists, we would be mad to sell him.

Anthony when you score 10 goals in 19 starts you do seem to be 'up there with the best of them'. Selling him for less than 5 million would be stupid because you can't sign anyone who is as good for that price, beckford if he played the majority of games this season would get us around 15-20 goals which is obviously a very good return, can't see why anyone would want to sell him when we have big vic still at the club

What would selling him for the quoted 5mill achieve? Couple mill on the debt (no doubt!) and enough to do a loan deal. We then have to take into consideration the other club and their movements... We may pick up another of Moyes' gems or another flop Jo?!?!

What we have with Beckford is a player that has had a season to gel with the current squad and someone who can nick a goal here an there - if played right (Saha or even Yak [to the extreme]).

I say keep the lad and who knows, may score several important goals and be a massive asset to us acheiving something this year.

Any player's for sale for the right price.

£3M is not the right price, and given our lack of options - especially as the Yak is widely tipped to move on, then no, I would not be looking to sell Beckford.

sell him for debt servicing and we are left with what? Saha for a handful of games before he breaks/retires, Anichebe for the most pointless striker at the club (doesn't actually score goals), Yakubu doesn't look that interested anymore or rely on Cahill (not a striker and getting older) and Fellaini (again not a striker) its pointless talking about selling him and doing something with the money as thats the last time you'll ever see it before it goes to a bank

No way. I think he would be quite capable of scoring 20 goals this season if he played with another striker in 4-4-2
Unfortunately we may have to rely on injuries to midfielders before we get to see a 4-4-2 formation.

No the squad is small enough, Beckford has excellent movement and gets into space (even if he does miss a few chances). I think he has done well in his first season. Andy Cole used to need a few chances to score a goal and I like the way Becks keeps getting in there and not giving up.

Trouble with Beckford is that even though his goal to game ratio is quite good his all round game is average. Too often his control or limited passing sees moves break down in the final third.

However, beggars can't be choosers so unless moyes has something better lined up then we can't let him go.

Would you sell becks for £5M though if it meant we could get Sturridge and Adam Johnson on loan for the season?

If the continued existence of the club was at stake I would sell my grandmother. mmm' on the other hand she might have a better first touch. On the other hand we could sell the older ones, clear the debt and start afresh with a new board as the only club in the UK, possibly the entire world that is debt free.
I'd like to see that!

Judging Beckford purely on technical ability I would sell him. He simply isn't PL quality and thats the reason we got him on a free.

At 28, it's unlikely he will be able to develop the awareness, first touch and strength which would underpin his undoubted knack for a goal.

I think if he stays at Everton he will find this season just as hard as the last (where's the progression?) and there are still question marks regarding his attitude (Reading/Wolves).

Absolutely no way.

We would be crazy to sell him. He may not be Defoe or (Darren) Bent but he scored 10 goals in his first ever season in the top flight, several from the bench.

For me, this season I am looking for him to build on that. He gives us pace and is a goal poacher, despite his lack of footballing brain or perceived Championship standard. 10 goals is not bad. Look at our list of top scorers in the past 10 years if you would like to have a reality check.

To answer your question: No I would not sell him.

So some "die-hards" claim he hasn't had a good pre-season. When has that ever been a valid reason for wanting to get rid of a player?

I attended the Bohemians game and for me he did as well as can be expected (while on the pitch) given the following:

1. No wingers on the pitch to provide him with chances. Anichebe is not or never will be one. Barkley cut inside from the left every time he got the ball.

2. Nobody in midfield capable of picking a pass and creating chances. The one player who can do that - Arteta - sat in front of the two centre backs for all of the first half and wasn't high enough up the pitch to break down a team camped on the edge of its own box.

3. Up front on your own with nobody to play off is a thankless task at the best of times, even tougher against a team set up for damage limitations.

4. Very little service from out wide through the two full backs, Hibbo and Garbutt (by the way, we looked VERY lop sided going forward in the first half with Barkley playing nominally on the left, so let's all pray Baines stays fit)

He's a goalscorer that hasn't been utilised as well as he may have been and a year's experience at Premier League level will have done his confidence no harm at all. Goals win games. Keep him.

I'd sell him in a heart beat! I really despise the guy on so many levels, his dire touch, his inability to hit the target, his complete one-dimensionalness, his ineffectiveness unless he gets an inch perfect pass to run onto, his lack of strength, his inability to pass the ball to a blue shirt and the general attitude he has. He's a bad apple and we need to get rid of him as soon as possible. I'd rather Moyes tried to rehabilitate Yakubu and get him going again.

I don't think we have the luxury to be able to flog players while our squad is small and shit enough as it is...

The £3m might do to paying off some of the debt, which wouldn't be a bad thing, but at the moment we need players, no matter how shite they are.

"His ineffectiveness unless he gets an inch-perfect pass to run onto"

Steve Ferns - Jeez, did this guy run over your cat or something?

The goals against Bolton, Chelsea, Blackpool and Liverpool to name just four belie what you say.

Ten goals in his first season after straddling two leagues isn't bad at all, especially with the little help he gets from Moyes's formations and especially when you compare it with Victor's remarkable 12 in 91 appearances!

Keep him and play him alongside Saha (when fit!).

10 goals last season put him equal top with Saha. He scored great goals last season and for me one of the goals of the season v Chelski where he ran virtually the full length of the pitch.

I tip him to come good this season IF he gets a run in the side and IF he gets some proper service.

Based on his ability....Fuckin right I'd sell him...shouldn't have got him in the first palce.

Absolutely SHITE 1st touch and needs 5-6 chances to score a goal...not good enough for the Premier League.

Having read this post it's amazing (well not really...) how many people are willing to accept mediocrity at this club whether it be the board of directors, manager or players...no wonder it is stagnating.

By the way...Boo hoo Kenwrong...crying cos the bank won't give him anymore cash...Thought he was looking for a buyer or at least investors (y'know 24/7 and all that shite..) not more bank loans....

We will become like Sheff Wed if he remains in charge.....

Can't say I'm a fan, but I wouldn't sell for £3M because we have sod all else up front & £3M would buy next to nothing these days. If we had other reliable strikers maybe... Saha's good for 15-20 starts, the Yak wants away & Vic is, to be kind, worse than useless on a good day. So we have to keep Beckford & hope he manages to convert more than the 1 in 4 chances he currently averages.

Sell why? Any money is going to the banks. Keep everyone. Fortget selling. We have who we have, Beckford included.

We're in the rare circumstance of having the exact same team coming back (How often does that happen?).

We talk about the Club's financial problems for good reason. The fellows in the locker room are aware of this better than us.

My view is that we have a group, a talented one, who need no adjustment to some new system. I expect us to come out fast this season. When we do, I won't be pleasently surprised.

My only surprise is if this doesn't happen.
