The Fallout

 14 Comments: First  |  Last

After the events of this week I think that the future of this club is going to be very interesting. The next two years are going to determine whether we are on a set path towards ruin or can rise like a phoenix to where we all believe we should be.

The first point of the fallout that will affect us I think is the Blue Union meeting. It was great hearing some home truths from Bill but where is that going to lead? I think that potentially it could do us more harm than good. We knew we were skint, the players knew we were skint, but now in big neon letters, the rest of the country knows as well. To put it into perspective, if someone like Spurs want one of our players, they know they just have to offer a bit more than the valuation to force our hand. Bill admitted the banks want us to sell our players, so therefore other teams would surely force our hand over the next 12 months.

The second fallout will be the players themselves. Moyes has built a squad who in large parts are loyal to the badge (or to the wages) and therefore will stick together. Jags, Baines, Cahill, Osman, and Arteta to name a few will shun advances from other clubs to play for us. However players like Billy, Heitinga, and Fellaini are players who will want to leave. If they can get to a better team in a better position in 12 months time do you doubt they will still stay knowing nothing will change anytime soon?

Looking at it from a wider angle, Coleman, Rodwell, Barkley (in two years) are players that will be sellable assets to balance the books. These players may want to leave if the likes of United and City came in for them, just to increase their chance of success in their career. Arteta may be the other asset we are forced to sell, as his wages will become a factor in the long run if the banks do have to get involved at least.

Finally, the other massive loss we could have will be Moyes himself. He will not stay too much longer if he has no chance of progressing with our beloved club. If he is forced to sell big players then he will know it is time up at goodison. Whatever you think about his managerial ability, you cannot deny another manager would surely have panicked and sold players to 'improve' the team by now. Where Moyes will go I haven't got a clue but he will know one day when he has to walk, which could be 12 months or if we carry on and cross our fingers, the end of the contract.

The way I see our predicament is simply that the 12 years looking for a buyer has to suddenly happen in the next 12-24 months. After that, then it will be anybody's guess where the future of one of the founding clubs of this league will end up.

Here is an idea for you to consider, if the club is relegated there will undoubtedly be a clause in each players contracts dropping their wages by probably 50 %, why not ask the players in this financially disturbing climate to let the club reduce their current wages by 10% to save possible administration and or relegation?
by my reckoning the savings would be in the order of £ 75,000 a week. My wife has not had a pay rise for 4 years so we all have to accept it and those on 60k a week would not notice it. That equates to 4 million a year.

perhaps even Davie can join in as he is one of the highest paid managers in the league.

surely the banks would see this as a step in the right direction.. players should accept this as a sensible option in this climate.

Some good comments Chris and sad that this club is in this state.

The question is how? Our really big money signings in recent seasons have been Bileyletdinov and Fellaini and did not some of that money come from TV revenue share outs and Prem.finishing positions?

Did Everton a few years back not hire some bigwig financial managers to control the club finances? Very little else has been spent in the big money bracket so to speak so are we so far in debt with the bank that we have no credit rating to bargain with. This is just incredible for a club like Everton.
We will pobably hold our own for a while but have little chance of competing with some other good teams for prime positions and European places. I suppose we can hope that we win the Derby matches and the occasional good result against other top 6 sides but the squad being the same as last season doesn't give us much hope for improvement this season unless there are some pleasant surprises with the fringe players much like Coleman last season.

Well done for the blue union for doing this. We knew the club was skint, but this is very worrying .Why did kenwrong not tell the fans 2-3 years ago how bad the club is. This great club has to be sold ASAP. If the blue union never did that meeting we would stiil been in the dark about how badly run this club is .3 points sat please

I've heard lots of quotes about how this publicity has destroyed this or that and now how it'll cause the vultures to hook our players on the cheap.

A few minor points ladies and gents, football is quite a close knit community, the chairman all know each other, they've played at each others grounds for years, managers and agents probably know an awful lot more insider knowledge about other clubs than us mere plebs do. Is it such a surprise that a club who hasn't bought a first team player in two years might be potless? A team that loans out players but doesn't bring a single new face in, a team that sells two players yet doesn't buy or loan another player?

Finally, for a few quid ANYONE can get hold of publicly filed copies of accounts on a company detailing their financial returns, get hold of directors reports. What makes you think that companies in this day and age dont already do this for a strategic advantage against a competitor they are trying to do business with? If you had a multi million pound business with red hot accountants and legal teams wouldn't you think for one second you wouldn't consider getting some info about a competitors financial situation if you wanted to asset strip them?

The group aimed their publicity at concerned fans as they told BK they would and the offspin that the media has highlighted the content has widened the catchment area.

The worry that we have somehow blown open the situation to other clubs in the same league is a tad naive, everyone of them know we are potless, christ most of them have outbid us on players over the last few years.

Have to agree with Gavin...the idea that the BU interview has sudddenly alerted the rest of the footballing community to the fact that we are broke is laughable. It's been obvious for a while.

Good stuff Gavin. No surprises adding to what everyone always knew. Us and everyone else.

What the hell. This season is it for the current squad and it's a pretty good one. Perhaps no new faces could work out for us. It is rare these days for a team to return the entire side.

The players certainly know what we do. They also know they play for one of the very, very few managers/coaches who actually matter. Let's get QPR for a start and see what happens after.

My prediction will be that a buyer will be found within the next 6 months. This, because bungling bill & his cronies have been found out by hanging around too long & awaiting a big pay day, at EFC's exspense.
The real outcome now will be that all potential takers in the last 3 years will be queing up to buy us out.............perhaps a pipe dream !

Garry I think the sale could well be bank driven rather than BK driven, he could try to sell one of our remaining names but that could be the final straw for too many fans he's already on very thin ice, will be surprised to see if he turns up today or calls in sick and if he does turn up expect to see an awful lot of stewards on display and very keen attention from them on chants and banners.

People...please dont kid yourselves that losing the manager will be a major blow....it really wont

Let's see if you're still saying the same at 5pm this afternoon after he's played 4-5-1 at home with Big Sic (er I mean VIC) on the wing.... against a team who've just been battered 4-0 (at home) in their first game....will be very interesting.

Would love nothing more than for us to put in a big performance and win...but I can't say that I'm confident.

Steve Cotton...dream on mate.

If you seriously believe that players will agree to PAY cuts rather than move elsewhere for equal or better rewards then you really are on another planet.

Can just see it now...." Bainsey, Jags Felli...We are in financial shit but Man City, Arsenal and Chelsea are intersested in you.... any chance you'll take a wage cut and stay here...you know just cos were Everton ?"

All 3 in unison..." No problem Boss"

GET REAL WILL YOU !!

Gavin, I agree with you and appreciate the info you provide but do you think a bank driven sale would be a good thing?

Andy I'm not saying it would be good or bad just that the choice may not be down to BK for much longer, if he defaults on servicing debts we risk going into administration, to bypass that risk BK has a last blast at survival as chairman by hocking off a major first team player to pay a debt but again thats very short term fix as the debt will be coming around again.

My worry is that the loans last season and sales of Bellefield, Vaughan and Pienaar disappearing quickly which were far more than the £4.5m annual debt service interest. The banks sounds like they may have already tried to call us in. As unpalatable as some would feel a bank sale may be the only way to break the stranglehold of the current incumbents just as it was across the park.

Nelly#10. nail, head.

Yeah but what if... nah won't happen.

This is what we are reduced to.

Yeah what if, once the window ends they can't go anywhere until Jan.

Do we have anybody in charge that could even think of that solution...and make it happen.
