Lord Grantchester

 20 Comments: First  |  Last

This guy is joint 53rd on the UK Top 100 Rich list and he owns 8% of our club. He is the grandson of John Moores. He is worth £1,200 million, and yet he doesn't seem to want to put his hand in his pocket.

I e.mailed him the other day ? because he is a Lord you can get his parliament e.mail address quite easily by doing a Google search. I am not expecting a response, but I basically told him that we need him to help us out now; the club that his grandfather loved and bankrolled is now the only club in the 4 leagues who haven't bought a player. We are barely breaking even on the back of 5 or 6 reasonably high finishes in the Premier League.

What would happen if we finished 15th, say? Would we have to start selling players to pay for the drop in revenue from a lower league finish?

How are we going to replace Neville, Distin etc? Even when we sell players at the moment (Pienaar, Vaughan, Yobo) we don't seem able to buy anyone.

This guy could help us out big time, without it so much even making a dent in his fortune. If any of you have a spare 10 minutes, why not e.mail him also? Make him understand the gravity of the situation.

We need to keep up this momentum and act now before the ticking time bomb (which is the current board and an ageing squad with no investment) explodes...

why would he do it? It makes no economic sense. Billionaires do not just throw money away.*

*The owners of City/Chelsea are doing it for more than 1 reason.
1, football can bring them good PR, and make them seem more legitimate in the eyes of normal people.
2. Money Laundering.

Maybe

How much would he need to invest

We obviously need players, but we need to buy better than what we have got so that we can get back into Europe
Unfortunately at the moment we have no European football to offer so that means we are unlikely to attract the type of player that we need (catch 22)

I don't want us buying mercenaries, paying them £175,000 per week and then trying to loan them out a year later

Also if he invested, he would need to invest in a new stadium eventually
I don't agree that we need to move just yet, I think it is more important to build a winning team
In turn that would drive a demand for tickets which would then cause us to invest in a bigger and better stadium
At the moment we have no European footy and average approx 34,000
If we move to a 50,000 seat stadium this will also drive up prices
Are existing ticket holders going to pay more money to sit in a half empty stadium watching a mid table team

.Investment would be great, but can anybody name any players who would come to our club right now, and who would improve us. I mean genuine top quality players and not Man City rejects

I fear that the type of player we need is currently out of our reach not just financially but also in footballing terms too

Would you give your vast pots of money to BK to play with?

I think a lot of his fortune is tied up in trust funds, and he needs the agreement of trustee's before it can be released.

Sure I read a national journo say he spoke to him at a social gathering and by way of intro told Grantchester he was originally from Aigburth, Grantchester said "oh really! what farm did you have?"

Seems he's a nice but dim gentrified type with no interest in football or Everton - it's just a family connection - nothing else.

The idea of Everton being run by amateurs without any inspiration grows every time you delve a bit deeper.

The point you're perhaps missing here is that Lord Grantchester has had plenty of opportunity to increase his investment in Everton, oto possibly get more involved; he hasn't.

Why do you think that is?

He has absolutely no intention of giving Kenwright a bean. And that's ultimately what it would involve.

I don't do predictions but I would have to say this one is never gonna happen.

It's not his money...it belongs to his Ma..... and she obviously doesn't want to invest in Everton FC.

Don't forget Sir John Moores (god rest his pure royal blue Everton soul) NEVER invested one single penny of his own cash in the club...he just acted as a guarrantor...

No point pleading with Grantchester...he's got no cash either...his grandad must be turning in his grave...!!

The Lord Grantchester issue seems to be recycled on a fairly regular basis. From what I have gathered from previous posts it would seem that it is a combination of factors as stated by Michael in that Granchester seemingly will have nothing to do with any Bill Kenwright enterprise, and as mentioned by Nelly #7 it is lady Granchester that holds the purse strings. On doing a tour of the parking spaces in the park end car park it would appear that Lord Granchester retains his own permitted place, not sure though if he actually attends the match or has any real interest in Football.

The family has an estimated £1.2bn, and as some posters mentioned, its tied up and committed in a number of ways, mainly through family trusts which were not established for this purpose.

Similar to Peter, I understand the family will have little if anything to do with anything BK touches. Fuck me would you with Derrick 'I'm a marxist pinot grigio drinking freedom fighter' Hatton as a known friend?

I am 'worth' half a million, well thats what the banks make me insure my house for. But can I go out and blow a third of it on a Super car?

Well actually I would and if I had half a billion in readies I would be in like a shot, but I am daft. Thats what we have financial advisors for (aka wives)

So it ain't going to happen, nor will Paul McCartney or any one else.

We will have to do it our selves, It's a pity that the Trust Everton was not started 6 years ago instead of 6mths.

Where are we with that anyway?? It may be our ( only ) long term plan A

Steve Smith @10

Steve, I remember driving away from Goodison after the Wimbledon match and hearing a member of the Grantchester family state that they would "never allow that situation to arise again", the situation in question being our near miss with relegation, so, they DO have some regard to the fortunes of EFC but I imagine they're not keen on getting involved with anything associated with Kenwright. Anyone else remember that statement?

I'm not asking him for £400 million to turn us into Man City, but they could comfortably clear our £45 million debt, for example, and they would still have well over £1.1 billion to survive on. I realise it's a long shot, but would they really want to be associated to the sinking ship we will become if we don't get any investment? I'm sure there'll be a bit of mud slung their way if they do not want to help us out at some point...

I think that it is probably a waste of time trying to change the ways of Grantchester but I do think it is worthwhile looking for ways to help out our great club. The current board dont seem to give a toss so it looks like its up to the fans to try and think of a solution! It makes me laugh because if we were to get relegated the board would not be so rich or held in such high esteem so its in their interests to keep us reaching for the stars too. Without the team doing well, the board will eventually suffer

What Gavin(3) said.....

Also, given that DM seems unable to get the current expensively assembled squad to beat teams such as QPR, would you give this man more money to spend on defenders to play in the middle of the park or central midfielders to play out wide? We had this type of result so many times last season too, so its not a one-off.

Before we get investment, we need a chairman with some business sense(or at least some grasp of reality), and a manager with some tactical nous. Preferably someone who is able to motivate the players and play them in their best positions.

From what i've heard Lord Grantchester and Kenwright do not get on. I'm sure the Grantchester family would rather keep the 45 million or so to clear the debt.

It's indeed sort of common knowledge that Lord Grantchester and BK are not exactly bosom pals, but even if they were, would Grantchester fork out the money? This, irrespective of who really holds the strings to his moolah.

If Grantchester were really interested, well, he would simply buy out BK and the rest of them and take over.

Nice try, though.
