End of Beckford?

 25 Comments: First  |  Last

Maybe I'm just reading to much into it but it seems rather odd that Beckford is not only not in the starting line-up but he's not on the bench either?

For me I thought it would have been a good opportunity for him to get some match fitness/sharpness against a lower league team and help him build up a bit of confidence ? a couple of goals tonight could send him into the game against Blackburn full of confidence.

Anyone else think/wonder that with all the recent rumours of bids for him Moyes could be looking to get rid? ? I hope not as I think, given a run/a bit of support up top, he could be a good player ? he will never be amazing but better then what could be brought in to replace him with what we'd get for him!

Like I say I probably am just reading to much into it ? but I find it very odd so thought I'd see what other people thought!

Mat, I only wish you had been right. He's not good enough and we could do with a prem club taking him off our hands

If we could get £5 mil for him I'd bite their hands off. He has the first touch of a rapist. There were balls bouncing off him for the whole game on Saturday

I think all he needs is a strike partner and a good run in the team and he?ll come good ? like many Leeds fans said when we signed him ? he?s a confidence player and I don?t think 20mins here and there and playing upfront on his own as this ?holding? striker in the great 4-5-1 formation does his confidence any good! He needs to be given a long run in the team playing off another striker ?until that happens I don?t think we?ll see his true potential.

This is really amazing. Whilst realising this cup is 2nd.rate I find it hard to believe that Moyes only played one forward and that was only Anichebe. Yes Cahill and Beckford were apparently injured but why not start with Saha and/or Velios for some experience?
Okay, they won easily in the end but these games are perfect opportunities to give other people chances as most other Prem. teams do but not Moyes it seems.
The man is hard to figure out.

We won by two goals we clearly don't need Beckford. That win has made everything okay now. Phew!

To say some of us wanted Kenwright and Moyes to go shows just what a fickle lot we are. What a difference a game makes. Coyb.

Mat - he had strike partner in the shape of cahill on Saturday and he was still pants!!
If he's the best we've got then we really are up shit creek!!!
He's a woeful player who simply isn't good enough for the prem. Had he played tonight he may well of looked decent as he wouldve been playing against his own standard, ie championship/league one.
He isn't nor will he ever be good enough for this club. If someone is daft enough to throw 4 or 5 million at him the good luck to them!!!

I really don't get this anti-beckford shit. He might not be the best striker, but he's good. He needs a strike partner though (cahill does not count).

Yes his first touch is a bit poor, but last week against qpr sahas was terrible too. A good first touch comes with practice and game time, he isn't going to get better being played as lone striker, and only here and there.

He ended up bagging a decent amount of goals last term, considering the game time he recieved. I think one bloke did the maths, and found that by dividing playing time by amount of goals scored he had the second best record in the premier league.

I know that is far from a conclusive study, but I do think he is worthy of staying unless someone offers ridiculous money for him. That goes for any of our players bar baines and barkley, who I would not want to lose at any price.

Couldn't agree more with Mat and Chris.

The kid isn't a striker that's going to hold the ball up and distribute. He's a runner. He's played up top all on his own to none of his strengths -

and he scored 10 goals in like 20 minutes of total playing time last season.

Yes, he has the first touch of a brick. But holding a ball up isn't his game. It's not his fault he's catching all this shit. He's in the wrong system for him currently.

I hope he stays, finds a strike partner, and comes good.

Why not stick him and Anichebe up top? Yes, Anichebe is shit. But the one thing I've seen him do well over the past year or so is hold a ball up when he plays up top, using that tank-like frame of his. I think they would do ok together.

But we'll never know. Cause we'll only play 4-5-1 or Anichebe will play on the wing - where he's complete crap.

Then again Barkley started in the opener.... so who knows. Maybe Moyes will actually stun us again.

Not holding my breath.

And pls understand in a perfect world Anichebe wouldn't even put on the jersey.....

Regardless of the merits of his football ability if he left we would only be reducing the squad size. Any money received for him would be gobbled up by our debt repayments.

Funny isn't it how many of our players get stick when played out of position or in a system that doesn't suit.
Here's my take .
Jags and Distin , both fine defenders but too similar, would be better with Heitiga alongside either.
Rodwell, Osman Bily wide players, no no no.
Beckford lone frontman [ that noise from family fortunes ]
He's not class but he's all we have .

As poor as Beckford's first touch is the sad reality is that through circumstances he has now become our first choice Centre Forward (No I'm not having Anichebe up front).

So it's either bin him or stick it out in the hope he turns good.

Like it or loathe it I believe it has to be the latter.

Beckford scored more than Anichebe in one season, if he's not played off a striker (note not a midfielder playing as a striker - Cahill is not a holding midfielder or holding striker) then he's wasted. To get shut without a replacement - Anichebe isn't in the same league, then thats suicidal.

The problem is the 4-5-1 system. We currently dont have a striker to play alone up front. In the same way people say Beckford will come good with a regular partner, I also think the same with Anichebe, with a better physical starting base than Beckford. Saha is our best striker and closest to being a lone front man, but his head goes down too quick. A couple of crap Jags punts for him to try and bring down against 2 centre backs is usually enough to end Saha's game in his head. The other problem is Cahill. If he cant get into the centre of midfield on merit, then he should sit on the bench and wait his turn!

Yakubu can play up top by himself... I'm sure he can still do a job for us. I'd still rather see two strikers though!

Beckford has great movement and will find and score chances. But his all round game is average and it means he loses possession alot which puts more pressure on us.

I actually think with his strength and size big Vic is better suited to the lone role (as shown vs man city last season) and as already said becks will shine mainly when alongside another proper striker and he can just make runs off the last man.

Bottom line is the system Everton play is rubbish and the strikers we have for one reason or another are no longer top drawer wether it be Saha(never 100% anymore) Beckford(sloppy ball control) Anichebe ( a tank) or Cahill(past his best).
Sadly they are all we have unless you add inexperienced Velios.
Hence the season will be long and tortuitous.
