Season 2011-12
The Mail Bag
Misery Loves Company
So... just 3 weeks into the new season and the outlook appears somewhat bleak to say the least.
There's a civil war in progress between board and fans, our financial worst fears have been confirmed, and one or more of our better players look likely to depart (possibly with very little cash to reinvest in return).
There's no respite on the park either as, even with most of our 'stars' fit and ready, our team looks demoralised, unbalanced and largely clueless against some of the league's weakest opposition (QPR and Blackburn both have to be relegation favourites).
Yet somehow, despite our woes, we're not the gloomiest fans on the block this weekend...
Spurs, one of the sides who appeared to storm past us in recent seasons as we were labouring in neutral, sit solid bottom of the table with nil points from two games and a -7 goal difference having been tonked by both halves of Manchester and are labouring amid some player strife of their own with Modric clearly wanting away.
Their rival North Londoners seem in even more dire straits, with just 1 point to show from 3 games, an even worse goal difference after an 8-2 humiliation at the hands of Man Utd, and a squad which has been decimated by the loss of their most creative midfield duo to rivals and over half of their first choice defensive line-up to bans and injuries.
Between them at the bottom, Woy's seemingly resurgent West Brom are looking fresh out of boing-boing with nothing to show from 3 games... just above a Blackburn side who are looking all too much like turkeys having failed to gobble a single point against Villa, Wolves and a very out of sorts Blues (despite 2 generous penalty gifts).
Even in mid-table, Sunderland and Fulham, sides suggested by some as likely to surpass the Blues this year and push Everton further out of the top 6 with their new appointments on the field and the touchline respectively, are looking decidedly uninspired with just draws on the board and negative goal differences.
So, if it's true that misery truly does love company and further adores those who are even worse off, fellow Blues must be feeling soothed and slightly less bitter in the knowledge that we're not the most hard-done-by this weekend.
In fact, despite the panto and the now familiar abject start to the season, when the dust settles our position isn't actually that bad and there are at least 5 reasons to be (relatively) cheerful:
i) We may not have deserved it, but we've won a game and have points on the board which is an improvement on last year and could be just the catalyst to boost confidence and give us something to build on.
ii) We've not been left for dead, indeed we're sat in mid-table with a game in hand that, should we manage to win it, would see us breathing down the necks of the CL spot.
iii) We now have a couple of weeks breathing space to settle any transfer business, calm the club down and get the players fit (Coleman/Gueye) and geed up ahead of two eminently winnable fixtures.
iv) We do have most of our senior players fit and available (barring transfers) and in Baines, Howard and Felliani at least they are starting to show some form.
v) Most crucially, in the shape of Ross Barkley we seem to have produced another genuine fresh talent, along with fellow youngsters Coleman, Gueye and Vellios/Baxter)
So then, whilst the blue glass may well be cracked, there's still a case to say that it's looking at least half-full. COYB!

No matter how well a team plays or looks you win fuck all in August.
We DO, after all, have some reasons to be reasonably cheerful it seems.
Yesterday was perhaps THE most fortunate win under David Moyes' stewardship. But a win's a win and after bouncing back in midweek, one can only hope that this allegedly talented bunch of players wake up and finally live-up to our expectations.
More on that from me later.
And more from me to come too on our chairman. Even my habitually-optimistic opinion about our club's principal guardian has been severely challenged recently.
When the man in charge of an £85m turnover 'business' cannot explain (or even find some pre-prepared PR bullshit), for where approximately 30 per cent of it has gone, alarm bells switch to deafening mode.
After supporting him on here on many occasions, I have changed my mind.
One cannot question his motives as an Evertonian. Like me, he loves our club. But he clearly has to realise it's a task beyond good natured sentimentality and let go.
If we delay any longer, we are destined to simply fade into the history books: 'Oh yes, Everton, they were a big team once weren't they?'
This is clearly going to be a pivotal season in so many ways.
Our win this weekend didn't leave much to feel positive about, but you're right. We also have two wins on the bounce now, so hopefully some confidence should be settling in. I'm actually looking forward to our next game now, for the first time this season. What a difference a day makes.
I'm feeling positivo at the moment!!
Better to be lucky than good..
Jesus..............................
However, the power of positive drinking is just taking effect so here goes:
1. We're 3 points better off after 2 games than in 84 / 85 when we were Champs.
2. If we win our game in hand against the red filth we'll be a point behind them. 1 point for a spending outlay of £100 million? Beggars belief - wasteful bastards.
3. None of our players have pony tails.
4. Big Vic's goals to games ratio is better than Carroll's and Torres' this season.
5. We didn't sign Barton in desperation. (Alternatively, we are too desperate to sign even Barton.)
6. The old adage, "if you can win while playing crap, it's a good sign". Well, we really are playing crap so things must be looking up......
7. Nobody's left yet.
8. We still live in Liverpool (sadly not the King's Dock).
9. We no longer have a fluorescent pink embarrassment of an away kit and are back to our historical finery of blue, white and amber. (White socks next year please).
10. Ross Barkley.
The Mighty Blue juggernaut is rolling into gear.
Fear the blues.
All you red filth - Fear the Mighty Blues.
Years ago there were not even any tables published until a few weeks into the season and this is a much more sensible approach.
Come back in October with the corresponding article.
Blackburn, who deserved to win, will strengthen as will QPR. Stoke are looking to add to their squad. Frankly, I wouldn't back us with any confidence to beat any team in the Premier League. I am drawing hope from the confidence that an incredibly lucky win might bring.
We look slow and tentative, lack width and movement which means we fall back on hoofball. We need a spark and we need it this week.
Love it well said mate,
A know its still wishfull speaking but well said anyway.
Great points; even if i don't agree with all of them, your passion shines through.
COYBs.
Now if it were with 3 games of the season remaining then you would have reasons to be cheerful.
All said, I hope the club can build to some extent on the weekend's result and establish themselves in the upper half of the league, I don't expect European cup soccer but even to grab a Europa Cup place would be something, still a very long way to go, remain hopeful!
I don't think our manager likes players who can run faster than him!
Sorry, this is supposed to be a positive thread isn't it. Good result at the weekend wasn't it? Marvelous stuff eh! Wonderful.
IMWT
According to the Missus Sarcasm is the only thing i have any talent for...
oh dear
Arsenal were missing around 7 first team players yesterday, also they will go out and strengthen.
The shite look stronger and better than last season.
Man city look tactically a different team to last year season. They are now going for it.
Also, its only Jags that we have had a firm offer for, the rest is just all media speculation.
Man City "look tactically different"....yeah after spending north of 50 million this season alone!
For the detractors, I think we all know that one lucky result doesn't mean too much just yet and the skies above still look pretty dark grey in the main, but that's why I'm seizing upon the rays of light that are piercing the gloom.
Obviously everyone's entitled to their own perogative, but personally I don't see how being miserable all year is going to help the situation (or my own state of mind) much and if you can't celebrate a little after a lucky win, then when can you?
Since my dreams of an exciting N'Zogbia/Donovan type winger were comprehensively shattered some weeks back I'm now even quite sanguine when it comes to the last few days of the transfer window and will be monitoring ANY moves with almost detached interest (although that could also be the jetlag, am in Beijing for a few days).
I personally think we have to do something to freshen it up and if that means losing Jags, Arteta or Rodwell in a player-plus cash deal then maybe it's not so bad, whilst I wouldn't say we'd def be better off, it's not like any of them are setting the prem alight right now.
Likewise, I'd naturally prefer a Sturridge, Johnson or Bellamy type as a new arrival over the likes of Bendtner and Gibson, but you never know how things work out (who got that excited about Kevin Campbell when he came in and kept us up or more recently the arrivals of the likes of Tim Cahill, Arteta or Baines initially?).
Ultimately, if any new arrivals could come close to adding the impetus and spark that Barkley has brought then we all might be able to see a little more sunshine in the weeks ahead (or at least glimpse some light at the end of the tunnel).
Yes we picked up three points but apart from that, can anybody say anything about our performance that bodes well for the future? FFS if Moyes thinks that of the choices he had available, Anichibe was our best bet, then we're in serious fucking trouble.
The team is stale, the tactics are stale, and, for the first time during his tenure I'm thinking that maybe we need a change of manager.
They spent plenty last season as well.
The point I'm making, last season they were defensive, boring, negative. What I have seen of them this season, Mancini looks like he has become more adventorous tactically, going for it from the off.
The past seasons we have performed well against City. If we play them this season like we played against Blackburn I fear goals in double figures against.
I'd wager if you asked Mancini what he has changed tactically from this year to last he'd say very little...and I don't mean he wouldn't say much.
