Who do you think you are........

 39 Comments: First  |  Last

I have just revisited the video interviews from the games at the weekend and would be interested to know what people's thoughts are as to just the way David Moyes comes across since the start of the new season.

In my opinion (if I wasn't a blue) the man is bordering on arrogant, snide, belittling and just plain unpleasant. As an ex-sports journalist, the guys interviewing him are just doing their job and at no point did I perceive any of their questions to be unsuitable.

One point in particular where the guy asked whether he was happy to "sneak" the win, the reponse from DM was damn-near sneering. My point is we have all been here in the past, bemoaning the myopic opinions of Ferguson, Wenger et al, but to my mind our chap seems to be even worse.

At a time when the fans are bordering on damn near anarchy as to the deafening wall of silence from our club, how and why is he appearing in company suits portraying the club in such a negative manner?!

The steely eyes and patronising manner are all well and good when we have been unjustly treated (Collina & Villarreal etc) but why be like that when we have won?!

If I'm brutally honest his manner made my skin crawl and whilst I fully respect what he has done for the club in his tenure, he is also not without his critics and for good reason with our style of play and people in wrong positions.

Arrogance is all well and good when in an untouchable position of success, but he does not have this. His interviews are rapidly resembling a spoilt child and treating the press with such disdain is not an image I associate with our great institution.

I think the opposite tbh Mark.

He conducts himself a little too well for my liking.

Moyes has his admirers but he will never be loved, perhaps if he decked Mancini when he was gobbing off, or grabbed Fabrigas and Wenger and twatted their heads together at the Emirates when they insulted our club. . . .

He's so used to being told how wonderful he is as soon as the going gets tough he gets uncomfortable.

He wants his head in the sand where it's nice and warm.

I was glad to see him look feisty and yes, just a little belligerent.

It may be wishful thinking on my part but I'd like to believe he was as annoyed as me with how badly the players had performed, and was well jazzed by the fact they had won, in the last minute, against all reasonable expectations from the game.

I'd love him to be up for it like this all the time, batting away all comers, instead of his usual pre-match praise for the opposition manager and their side's 'achievements'.

He needs to be more cocky... WE ARE EVERTON!!!

It's certainly difficult to defend David Moyes when it comes to playing people out of position and the tactical turmoil this often produces, but defending him against sports journalists? 'What do you think about your lucky win Mr Moyes?' (I paraphrase) got exactly the response it deserved.

As I recall, Moyes' spin on the Blackburn game was that they were awarded two dive-assisted pens and we won by scoring our justifiable one. In private, I'm quite sure he would have admitted to any of us that we were awful, must improve, and are grateful for the points. But to give that to the press? That really would be dereliction of duty.

My paper today gives Everton a couple of mentions, as Arsenal's saviours by letting them have Arteta and Jags. And who can forget the BBC journo who suggested to some Chelski manager or other that he must be "gutted" after Cahill had scored a fabulous overhead volley (not goal of the season of course) to tie the game late on. This is the media world Moyes has to operate in, and quite frankly if he is only showing them disdain he should be congratulated for his restraint.

Great to see him with some fight. Probably been a bit too accommodating to the media in his tenure and its got us nowhere. He would be slagged off massively if he just gave up and accepted a "lucky" win comment. Another excuse for someone to have a go at Moyes.

I think he was justified. I hate the way we are belittled and treated with such disdain by the media. I believe that our manager should be critical of us in private but should back the team to the hilt in public. Don't many teams get away with lucky win? Do all their managers get asked the same? Well done for once,Moyes!

I agree with Michael and indeed a couple of players have since come out and confirmed that he told them how crap they were after the game.

Personally, given the hand he is currently playing with courtesy of the Dear Leader, if he keeps getting questions like that I hope he gives one of the condescending gits a Glasgow Kiss

Mark Yeomans I'm with you.

He's a Fergie disciple and considering the easy ride he gets is very prickly unless he's getting soft soaped on the SKY sofa.

I imagine his dressing room manner is the same - question him and it's the cold shoulder.

No coincidence there's no strong characters at Everton.

I personally thought he came over as a Cocky Shit. Given that's the tactics he empolys after 10 years of doin the job, he should be ashamed. A Blackburn fan at work told me today, thats; the worst away team performace he's ever seen at Ewood Park, and that's going back to the days before Howard Kendall was there.

This is an excellent and interesting article. How does the rest of the football world view Moyes? Well we're still told he is the best around by all the regular pundits. But his stock is falling, he won't get top four job these days.

And yes, he comes across as under attack and defensive, he made his disdain very clear and it was cringeworthy. I am in full agreement that he is difficult to hear talk sometimes.

Well said Mark, our "miracle worker" has been like this for a while now. Every time a reporter asks something a bit too probing, Moyes gets nasty.

I'm just about sick of the apologists on here trying to cover his every move, the fucking club is going backwards through gross mismanagement on and off the pitch and all these people come out with is "If Davie goes we'll be finished...." ? my fucking big fat arse!

Some of the 'questions' these journalists ask are shite anyway. If I was getting interviewed and some one asked me a stupid question then, like Moyes, Dalgleish and Ferguson, I'd treat them with distain myself.

Reporter: You must be feeling disappointed after getting beat today?

Moyes annoyed that the questions were about Everton riding their luck, and transfer activity.

On the first question, it is totally legitimate.

One the second question, it is also legitimate and if he's getting sick of it he can sling his hook.

Nothing wrong at all with treating these metrosexual, preppy-looking, estuary-English speaking, "sports-journalist degree," educated, middle-class home counties living, soulless, chardonnay tossers with an appropriate level of disdain if you ask me..

Agree completely with your analysis, and if you will pardon my French and lack of sensitivity, I think he's an absolute cunt of a man who brings the traditions of this club into disrepute. I can't wait for the day he is either a. sent packing with his tail between his legs, b. resigns in the belief he will be offered another big job, only to find that he isn't or c. is offered said job, only to be shown up as the one-dimensional hoof merchant that he is and gets laughed out of the place inside 6 months.

Absolute spineless, contemptuous, horror of a man who doesn't give a jot for the fans of this club.

I too am infuriated at the stupid questioning Moyes gets from the press. He gets an easy ride and should not antagonise reporters. If he is not careful they might ask questions that zero in on why his team are under prepared, lack any kind of imagination, includes players that are a disgrace to the name of Everton, why he persists in playing them out of position and why his substitutions are usually far to late and most often the wron ones.

Dave Wilson is right. Typing that makes me uneasy but he is. Moyes has been too soft for too long. I have never been angrier at him than when he came on, after one of the worst challenges I have ever seen, and said that Kevin Nolan isn't "that type of lad". He is and Moyes should have denounced him for the piece of shit that he is.

I'd rather have an angry Moyes responding to the inane crap that poses for interviewing on televised football than the mates club that it actually is.

Thanks for the spelling advice. And by the way YOU imply, I infer. Never mind, they do get mixed up regularly.

'Middle class ponces' is not a phrase which covers you in glory, and you come across about as pleasant as Moyes.

Moyes should be less rude, and if he is sick of being asked about transfers then he should either sling his hook or send Round out instead.

As someone else mentioned earlier, Moyes speaks for the whole club so I'd prefer he didn't sound like a twelve year old in a strop.

Fully agree with you Mark @ 32.

"Moyes should be less rude, and if he is sick of being asked about transfers then he should either sling his hook or send Round out instead. As someone else mentioned earlier, Moyes speaks for the whole club so I'd prefer he didn't sound like a twelve year old in a strop."

Thanks for all your comments guys, as it clearly polarises opinions. Have to agree that some of the questions that the journos ask either a) come across as just plan daft or b) way too sycophantic and none probing towards football's elite.

I fully empathise that if they are going to ask banal piss obvious questions like "Are you disappointed to have lost?!" then in some ways Moyes is treating them with the contempt they deserve.

However this is where the paradox comes in for me in that journalists in the English top flight are in a catch 22 situation. Pressuring journalism is either not allowed by the EPL board ("are the press briefed what not to ask etc") or is it just lazy journalism. The fact that many have been banned from certain grounds by individual management and boards in the past for "rocking the boat", I find deeply troubling and goes against the grain of the Free Press.

This seldom happens, or is allowed to happen, in any other form of industry. Sky Skorts punditry on the cricket for example is superb and objectional.

However, Moyes seems to be twisted and vulgar regardless of the questions asked of him.

We constantly question why the networks give our club so little exposure yet is it little wonder when he behaves like this?!
