Something's rotten in...er... Holland

 39 Comments: First  |  Last

Following on from speculation that we're in for Royston Drenthe, I looked at his Wikipedia entry - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royston_Drenthe - to discover this...

"Royston Ricky Drenthe (born 8 April 1987) is a Dutch footballer who potentially could be on his way to lesser side in Merseyside, Everton FC. Unfortunate for him it may be, he will at least be guaranteed first team football.

Probably written in haste whilst trying not to expel both bladder and bowels into ones Liverpool branded tighty-whities (or reddies in this case). Sadly, it's already been taken down.

Silly Billy.

What an absolute fucking mess this club is. I'm distraught about Arteta. I'd have rather nothing happened today. We've recouped £15 million in player sales and brought in 2 unknowns on loan. I feel sick right now, utterly sick.

In hindsight, Leon Osman and Pienaar have outperformed Arteta over the past two seasons for Everton.

What has Arteta really done of late to warrant being sold for £10 million?

It's not that bad.

What IS bad. Is that we have £15 million in the bank with no body too sign. The same old story when it comes to Everton.

"brought in two unknowns on loan".

Royston Drenthe has joined us from Real Madrid, was a regular last season on loan at Hercules, previously played for feyenoord, and has been capped by Holland. hardly an unknown.

Stracqularsi, I will admit, is a new name on me, but he has at least had a good season in Argentina with Tigre, so lets give him a go and see how he does.

3 OUT ( Arteta, Yakubu and Beckford) and 2 IN ( Yobo is staying, I guess) so call that 3 IN. So squad numbers still the same.

This is a real test of Moyes' management. I hope the 2 new boys do well. I was sad to see Arteta go but like they say no player is bigger than the club.

Just to add, at least it is something fresh after things have been a little stale for awhile.

Good luck to the new boys, all the best to the old boys and Moyes please do not play the new lad upfront by himself in a league he has no experience of!

Personally i would have kept Beckford and sold Anichebe but who is going to buy him!

Drenthe is out of contract at the end of the season, so if he has Donovan-esque revelation and also has a good season we could get him on a free transfer next summer.

And maybe Donovan on loan in January. Then we'll have 2 attacking fullbacks in Baines & Coleman, And 2 attacking wingers in Drenthe & Donovan, Jags & Distin making up the back 4, Felli holding the middle, with Barkley and Osman doing their thing in midfield, and Saha up front completing Moysies beloved 4-5-1. things dont look too bad. And we'll have a bench of Mucha, Heitinga, Neville, Rodders, Cahill, Gueye, Vellios, Strac-uh-uh, Bily, Vic. even without Donovan, with Coleman on the wing and Neville RB thing dont look as bad as the gloom merchants on here are suggesting with their relegation fight predictions.

Alan @1-

I absolutely love reading your posts, but on this count I think you're off the mark.

Arteta is older, and really hasn't done much of late at all. Can't take a FK, hits the first man on every corner, doesn't seem to have that flair he did 3-4 years ago...

Time to move on. And we just got 10 mil for him and we need the money desperately.

Only thing I'm left scratching my head about: who the hell's gonna play up top?? Cahill? (no) Saha? (crocked). Anichebe? (fuck me....)

But good business these last second moves all in all. Hopefully someone steps up at striker. I'd rather have this fresh outlook, take the money, and see what pans out.

James, anyone can edit Wiki... hence the comical updates on Riquelme's wiki page yesterday.

I'm still positive this morning. I'd preferred to have got more for Arteta, but for a 29 year old who hasn't dazzled for a while, it's not terrible.

We've got rid of The Yak, and brought in what looks like The Drac from the OS pic of Stracqualursi. I've never heard of him, but his Youtube montages (I know, I know) seem to show a strong forward who has a mean head and shot... not all finesse but, dare I say it, Shearer-esque.

Receiving £4.5M profit for Beckford is not bad at all, and while he's had lots of critics, I'm sad to see him go. Drenthe though is potentially a great signing... think Pienaar but on speed. Might be frustrating at times with lack of end product... but hopefully left side will be much stronger.

So all in all happy - albeit two loanees.

Just seen the pictures of Drenthe and Big Denis on Sky.The big man looked absolutely chuffed to bits while Drenthe looked rather underwhelmed to be honest.
Also Onuha could still arrive from City as initial paperwork was pushed through just before deadline, also City may cancel his contract to allow move to take place.
P.S. Thank you and good luck Mikel still the best little spaniard we know!

Yes not bad all round, I hope and think Arteta will do well, but suspect he was not going to set the world on fire with us and we have plenty of other decent players in that area - as for the 2 new chaps we will have to see....

What would be great (none of us will hold our breath) is clear and concise clarification from the club re. the bank and funds for future transfers - if we got c£18m in, then surely not all of this has been required on the OD - ?

I'm not exaclty gutted that Arteta has gone, seeing as we have good depth in centre mid, but it does highlight (again) what a shambles Billy Bollocks is running.

I'm delighted that Yak is off the wage bill, but a little surprised at the Beckford deal. Looks like we're getting just £3m plus possible add ons for him. That's our one pacey striker gone - who is actually a good imact sub late in the game.

On the plus side, we've got a high quality wide player on board with bags of tricks and more importantly pace.

The Argie will most likely struggle, but I'd love to be proved wrong. If I'm honest, I'd have been happier if we kept Becks instead of landing this loan.

Eugene,

I've just read the link you provided but tbh I don't have a problem with what was said. OK he lost his way massively at Real but he managed to pick his game up again at Hercules... Only for that to come to an end due to standing up for his unpaid wages, being given no support by the fans or the players and the racist attacks he was subjected to.

He reminds me a lot of Pienaar (except potentially a lot better) and provides the width and speed we have been dying for on the left. Him and Baines on the left could be very tasty... Coleman and Gueye (ok, ok I can dream can't I) on the right... CM from Osman, Felli, Barkley or Rodwell... not too shabby.

Up front... well its hit and hope time...

Money banked, wages saved, fresh blood in, pace on a wing, a striker in, youngster given the opportunity to be blooded, a shake up of the squad.....come on give Royston and Sasquatch a chance. Judge this piece of business in the next window....might just free up the purse strings.

Sort of glad that Arteta has gone. done NOTHING the last 2 years, Ossie and Rodwell more than capable of filling in. Mikel was wasted in the middle of the park, more of a wing man in my opinion. But thanks for the memories and good luck at the gunners.

As for the two new recruits, welcome to Goodison Park. Drenthe will be a big hit. He has pace to burn. Will take on any1.
And Big man Strac.... im sure once you settle in you will score a few. a mini tevez i hope.

So much negetivety around Goodison. its not needed. 15million in our pocket. Keeps the bank off our backs and who knows who might arrive in january?????

I was fuming last night, but I think it was just the frustration of our general situation.

Not bad window after all's said and done, although we need at least one more striker on the books.

Good luck to Mikel, deserves champions league football and Arsenal will suit him. Had gone stale here.

My only concern is the likes of Baines may start thinking about also moving on.

Anthony #17: Couldn't load the OS; if that's the case then cool. Big Denis needs a proper haircut though!

Tom #22 ? something was mentioned on radio, either 5 Live or TalkSport ? haven't heard anything since but it's not unheard of. Don't forget, Arteta still has to complete medical I believe.

We can still sign out-of-contract players... McFadden anyone?

Why are people annoyed about Arteta? He's bloody useless. He was awful against Blackburn and has been awful for 2 years.

I was the first 1 to say that he should be sold. I'm just annoyed about the timing of it. Except his little run that set up Beckford against Sunderland, he's been awful.

I'm extremely annoyed at Beckford going as he is a great striker. He scored numerous goals last season despite the fact he rarely started. I blame moyes for this debacle, why doesn't he just state his price, then sell them. Our current predicament is all down to the fact he wasted £18 million on Heitenga and Bily.

I was annoyed at about 11.30 last night, then by about 12.15 I was pretty happy about it all. Arteta going is good business for many reasons I've already bored people about (age/club debt etc), and Drenthe is a good player. We really needed a winger and he can be outstanding if you can get him playing (rather than rapping - check out Youtube if you don't know what I'm on about).

The big Argentine fella looks a piece of work as well - big, strong, good in the air, and can play on the floor too. Less Ferguson, more Shearer if you ask me and could (could) fit in really well in the PL.

I don't think losing Arteta is a bad thing really - he's been with us 6 years so we can't say we haven't had our money's worth and £10m is a decent price for a player of his age who's had his fair share of injuries, and wanted to leave the club anyway.

Onwards & upwards.

I am a little hypocritical as in the past I have been positive about Beckford, but I think he exasperated Moyes and others too often, typically in the 2nd half (after a frustrating blank in the first) when he would try outrageous flicks and dummies that he was just not up to - then get hauled off. The QPR game was a good example.

I doubt Leicester will pay any more than £3m if it is performance related

All in all a decent deal, though I am not sure who will stick the ball in the net when Saha is not available

Beckfords downfall was Wolves away last year he'd scored we were coasting at 3-0 when he basically refused to chase a through ball,Moyes was livid and substituted him very quickly after as Beckford argued back with him, them if you remember MOTD when Moyes ripped him in the post match interview .
Moyes never forgets and we've made a 4million % profit.

Am with Alan@1 on this Drenthe looks like he might have to be dragged from a fuckin coffeeshop to pull on the famous blue shirt.

Maybe if nobody left it was worth it but a 10m rated midfielder one of the best in the Clubs recent history has been sold and been replaced with Drenthe who no other Club wanted.

He played well for the Dutch u21 team? ye so did Ryan Babel and he was shit. A bad day with Beckford also sold and replaced by some Argie, are we even sure he's a pro? Velios and Strac upfront Premiership centrebacks will be shitting themselves.

The other thing that made me laugh was that were such a joke that if Arteta and Beckford didn't go the 2 new boys would of been packed off back to wherever they have come from.
