Dean record safe despite Messi spree

Lionel Messi's incredible deluge of goals for Barcelona this season has broken a slew of records but the one that Evertonians prize, that of Willam Ralph Dean's 60-goal haul in 1927-28, will remain intact for now.

The Argentine star, surely now the greatest player of his generation, has notched a mind-boggling 72 goals in all competitions for the Spanish giants this season, but with 50 League goals to his credit and just one game to go, Messi would need a super-human, double-digit feat against Betis to beat Dixie's 84 year-old record.

Few believe Dean's total will ever be surpassed but Messi has come closer this season than anybody in Europe's top leagues in recent years.
