Just watched the whole of the Sheff Wed vs Leeds game on SKY to get a good close look at Ross Barkley – and by the way so did Moyes who was in the stands.

The lad clearly has bags of skill, can spot the incisive pass, instant control, creates space BUT is so infuriating — he looks overweight, he doesn’t pick up players, he frequently gives the ball away in dangerous spaces, yet has an aura that he could turn any game in a few minutes of pure genius. To me at this early stage he looks more suited to a Spanish/ Italian game than an English one – he is clearly never ever going to be a worker, he’ll never be able to tackle, and I’m unsure whether he will be a Moyes player.

I was inclined at times tonight to think that the he needs better players around him, a Pinaaer, a Jelavic , a player who will be able to read his play but a second later he does something which makes you cringe – a flick without looking , a 30yd through ball cut out with too many players committed forward etc. Moyes on tonight’s showing will I’m sure will leave him there for another month or two in the hope that his all round game develops.

My own personal view if I was asked to look into a crystal ball would be that the lad will not make Everton’s first team this season and maybe never. He takes far too many mistakes for the Premiership – and as we saw at Blackburn last year mistakes cost goals. Yet as I have already stated there is something in him which would make you hair stand on end – but will it ever be allowed to come out for Everton.

Personally I think the prediction is a little harsh, but I agree that at times he seemed a touch happy to stroll rather than track back quickly. This could be a fitness issue or perhaps a lessened desire to work due to it being a loan spell. Either way in order to break in as a central midfielder under any manager (let alone Moyes) he would need to up his work-rate. Alternatively he could be used more in the 'Cahill' role, but competition for places might be harder.

A quick search on twitter suggests the Sheffield Wednesday fans love him, and really want him until christmas, so he must be doing fairly well. A premier league loan spell would certainly tell us more (if he isn't going to get an extended run in the first team), although hopefully his appearance record would look more like Cleverley at Wigan or Wilshere at Bolton, and less like Mceachran at Swansea!

Ultimately I'm still holding out hope that he will progress enough to make a real impact for us. He is certainly more akin stylistically to the football we play now than to how we have played before!

Apologies for the rambling nature of this (extended) comment!

You seem to give a fair assessment Mike, although I didn't see the game. I've seen the lad at GP a couple of times and although he didn't look out of his depth (as I think Gueye does) he seemed to run out of options very quickly. I can see what you mean about a 'Spanish' game suiting him better.

Agreeing with you, I suspect only a serious injury list will see him get a chance this season, certainly if it goes well and we are looking for a high place. Safety and a few 'nothing' games to go, and maybe.

There is a lot said about bringing young players on. You can't generalise, but those that get the chance usually have a particular characteristic a team can use. Raw speed comes to mind. Rooney was built like a pit-bull at 15, but he also had a special set of skills.

Barkley hasn't. He's OK. But take the TWebber critics of Ossie, and offer them Ross for the season in that position instead of Leon. I don't think there would be too many takers.

Good - as usual - that Moyes was there. OK, he's very well paid, so so he should be. But that's not it with DM is it.

Great post Mike.

He definitely doesn't like a tackle. Most probably down to his leg break.

Hopefully this loan move and maybe others will iron out all the silly mistakes because he has the makings of a very good player.

For what it's worth (and, yes, there may have been some less complimentary ones further up the stream — I didn't scroll very far), some Tweets from Wednesday fans from this evening:

Granted, you could argue that they're comparing him to the Championship fare they're used to seeing and we Blues might therefore critique him more harshly but they've also seen him more than we have this season...

He's also still a teenager, let's not forget. Young players make mistakes and experience/playing time helps drum those errors out.

Nice one Lyndon. All the information we can get isn't going to do any harm is it. A few of our loan-outs have paid good dividends, so let's hope this does the same.

Mike, one sentence stands out for me

"He takes far too many mistakes for the Premier League".

Well, I'm not disputing he makes mistakes, but I have to ask, have you ever seen Phil Neville?

I'm a big fan of Phil the man, but ON the park, while at Everton, I've seen him (nb: an experienced international) hit hundreds of shitty passes, give away possession far too often, score own goals, miss tackles, get roasted, etc etc.

If it's about mistakes, Barkley is not alone.

18 and a handful of Premiership games. Of course he is the finished product, wont be long before he is in the England side along side Rodwell and Lescott and Rooney. Junior is not ready Mageye needs games and Barkley is wowing them at Wednesday.

Fuck Mageye off to the championship for a year or so and put Barkley on the bench with 20-30 minute cameos. Gibson and Fellaini and everyone else will cover him until he gets the experience and confidence to hold his own. I would even put him out wide as he good ball control and a bit of pace.

I suppose Moyes knows what he is doing. 3pts off QPR and another nail in the coffin for Mark Hughes.

I watched that entire match, including the disgraceful assault by the Leeds supporters, and Barkley is a mixed bag. But that's what you would or should expect from a teenager. He has skill, no doubting that. He loves the little flick on and back heels and to try to take a man on. But he really didn't have any success taking his man on and getting a ball into the box.

But that's what he's there to do, learn, and not hurt us while doing so. His biggest weakness I noticed is that when attempting to defend he does a terrible job of closing his man out. He runs hard at the player with the ball but with no control, so the player just steps aside and Barkley is instantly 20 yards behind the play. Can't knock the effort, but can definitely knock the execution.

The funny thing is Sheffield Wed actually played some really good football for a lot of the match, with Barkley linking up well some of the time with Boothroyd. But Barkley also does lose the ball a fair amount and often time dribble it straight into the defender leading to a break the other way.

That's my take from watching the full 90 minutes. I see a lot of potential and skill but think staying on loan until at least January and playing every match will greatly benefit him and us.

He is a young kid! He will learn his trade under a good Championship manager whilst getting game time.

People forget that not many youngsters at clubs break through before their twenties. Even players like Welbeck and Cleverly were sent out for a couple of years before they broke into the first team. Make no mistake, this kid will be a top player and will be an England regular in a couple of years.

11 Posted 20/10/2012 at 07:46:08
I saw Ross play 90 mins in the close season at Hereford. Very difficult to judge - its all about context. Playing against conference players with a mixed bag of players around him he looked ok, and on occassions too advanced for his team mates. It looked like he was playing a different game. Look at Rooney who is often anonymous playing for England but in team of better players, MU, shines.
Think the jury is out until the lad gets a run in the first team which I wouldn't expect this season unless injuries pile up.
Norman Merrill
12 Posted 20/10/2012 at 07:53:29
We all appreciate that Ross has talent, it's the other parts of his game that need polishing up, David Moyes has loaned him out to Wednesday to help find and hopefully nurture his work rate.
His experience in getting regular starts, can only improve his confidence, and hopefully help Dave Jones side climb the table.
I have confidence, in the lad, and hope he really knuckles down, and returns to his first love EFC a far more mature player.

Light years ahead in footballing terms of Neville, Junior, Gueye, Coleman, Hibbert etc. Get him home and, as one earlier post said, give him a few cameos off the bench.

I'm sick to death of seeing the Finch Farm mafia's names on the teamsheet every week.

Give the lad time – maybe he will surprise a few of you who have already decided he isn't good enough for us.

Worst-case scenario – sell him to Citteh for millions, like we did with another who wasn't good enough (Rodwell) and replace with better.

Mike, good post...

I watched the full match last night and at times it looked like Barkley had eyes in the back of his head! Some of his touches were world class; however, I have to agree he makes a lot of stupid mistakes in very risky areas. But let's remember, this kid is only 18.

I can only see him getting a start in the Cahill role because, if he makes a mistake, it won't be as costly. He does look overweight which is a worry; my view is it will be another year a least before he will claim a spot on our team...

So, to be fair to Moyes, he has called the Barkley case spot-on — he simply isn't ready for the bigtime YET.

I think reports sound favourable. His potential is good and hopefully a run of matches will help improve his decision making and positioning(and fitness) it may be that he doesn't hit his stride with Wednesday till towards the end of the season (if he stays that long) but I reckon by the time he's 20 he will be playing regularly for us.

The reality is if you can pick up the likes of Gibson for 500k and Hitzleberger for a slice of Black Forest Gateaux he's got no chance of playing in the Prem.
Ian Bennett
18 Posted 20/10/2012 at 09:54:12
Sam - I think you are right. He has vision, an eye for a pass, and tries things others can't do. You can understand the hype if you watch him as a prospect. He is realistically another season from being ready for the premiership from what I have seen in my opinion.

A similar style of player as Wilshire and Ramsey.

Wayne Smyth
19 Posted 20/10/2012 at 10:40:43
Barry, Gibson is 24 and watching Hitzlsperger for the ressies his workrate left a lot to be desired too. Gibson was a genuine bargain - but is a different player to Ross - and Hitzlsperger will go the way of the straq/mcrooney imho.

Barkley is still very young, has almost no first team experience to back up his undoubted potential and I'm shocked to hear people say what he'll never be able to do. How about we give him an opportunity to develop those talents first?

I'd also agree with Eugene that if you look at Phil Neville or a few other players, they consistently play hospital balls, surrender possession, score own goals and just have all round general shoddy play. I've seen phil neville play really shit balls, then bawl out the player he "passed" to.

Remember back to when fellaini first joined as a young player. Lots of people basically saying he was shit. In fellaini's case he wasn't shit or that he lacked first team experience, just that he needed time to acclimatise and work with the coaches to get rid of his rough edges and get up to speed with the PL. Now he's talked about as one of the best centre mids in europe.

In Barkleys case, the kid has almost no first team experience to improve him....so no, he's not the finished article, but he never will be unless he gets given time on the pitch with our first team. I think at the moment he's certainly good enough for short cameo's in the PL during games where we're winning, but he's probably better off at a lower league side where he can get proper 90 minute games given Moyes reluctance to play him.

Good posts guys. I watched about 75mins of the game last night and I would agree with most of what has been posted.

He did put in ONE great sliding tackle of note (first half, near touchline) so he does have it in him!

He also showed a good touch and at times great vision and going forward he was impressive. Tracking back it was a different story and he does have a lot to learn, but he was a central figure for Wednesday last night, particularly in the first half and the locals applaued every flick and spraying of the ball and they are the ones watching him week in week out at the moment - and they haven't won since August!

At 18 I think we have a potentially good player on our hands, don't forget David Beckham was out on loan at Preston before going on to have a decent playing career. You never know and we can live in hope. Fingers crossed.

I agree with most posters , who say the lad does have something , although I wouldn't like to judge him on this appearance alone.

It was a high tempo derby game and his manager David Moyes was also in the stands watching him.

If anything I think he lacks a little self-belief and confidence that Wayne Rooney had at a similar age , if I was his manager I would keep telling him that his ability is fine and try and get him to boss the game a little more.

His team-mates last night seem to believe in his ability as they often looked for him in tight midfield areas.

If he is looked after correctly , I can see no reason why the lad won't be a success at Everton.

Wayne, I just can't see why people are going mad for him shades of Seamus Coleman and Jack Rodwell about the whole situation ie his reputation exceeds what happens on the pitch.

Just can't see anything special about him at all hopefully Man City will and we'll have another 16 million to do some real biz.

Shane, Corry, from what I remember, seemed to do quite well. I saw him as central to Weds dominance of the 1st half. Energetic and creative as they bossed the centre of the park. I didn't see the whole of the 2nd half so can't really say to much on that.

Main highlights for me on Barkley last night was taking the ball under pressure on the centre circle, one look and an inch-perfect ball in front of the left winger from about 35 yards, so the winger didn't have to break stride.

This little highlight showed he is a special player, as sadly not many either try it or can pull it off. His weight of touch is nice, just makes the odd wrong choice or plays himself into trouble.

Barkley is different class. The player with the most potential since Rooney. I would leave him at Wednesday, where he is in good hands, for the rest of the season. He has got faults and most of them will go with experience. I don't see the point in turning a potential Gazza into a Phil Neville. So let's keep Moyes and Stubbs away from him for the time being.
Dick Fearon
32 Posted 20/10/2012 at 12:29:41
Alan Ball would have been Moyes ideal type of player. Alex Young would not have made Davy's bench. Everyone who was fortunate to see both would have their own favourite. My choice is the one who elevated the game of football to a higher sublime level. The one who could leave you staggered at what this game would be like if it were played in heaven.

I hope with all my heart that modern day Evertonians will one day experience as I did, the awesome feeling of having witnessed a talent that was not of this world.... Young Ross could be that.

First, Moyes likes to put down technical gifted players, like last season when Drenthe first got on and played some great stuff he was taken off again for no reason at all. Barkley too had something very different and gave the fans a breath of fresh air, problem is that Moyes could not deal with Barkley making one single mistake after many good games Barkley was never seen again.

I find that both Barkley and Drenthe is no longer with us as a clear sign that Moyes is not prepared to take chances with young players who need time and guidance in order to shine. To be honest, I find it brutal the way these two were treated last season by Moyes.

He certainly has crushed the Ross Barkley we first saw against QPR, and once he had Donovan he threw Drenthe away like it meant nothing. Drenthe was ill treated along the way and got fed up, and that I can understand.

The problem is Moyes does not seem to care how he treats his young players. He has no problem with throwing Barkley under the bus, just like the ugly comment he made before Barkley joined Wednesday: "He will go and make his mistakes at a Championship level."

If anyone is in doubt any longer that Moyes lacks the ability to handle youngsters and nurture them into top class players then you clearly have not seen how it is supposed to be done. Look towards Arsenal and Wenger, Henry Fabregas, Van Persie and the list goes on, Wenger should be our next manager, he could really show us how he has the best youth development history in England.
Everton should strive to be more like Arsenal in that way, at least Moyes should take lessons on how to develop youngsters!!!!!

Not only is Ross only 18 but also he has missed a lot of football due to injury, so in experience terms is even younger. Midfield is not only about talent but also understanding many of the aspects of the game and as Colin mentioned name a world-class midfielder at 18. He needs to play regularly to learn and under Dave Jones in the Championship he should have a good tutor at a decent standard so that next season he can hopefully start to deliver in the EPL for us.

The one worry is the comments re his weight – I can't really see an excuse for this if he is overweight so hopefully this will also be looked at and improved, though at 18 his body is still maturing so it may be just nature.

I saw the whole game too and was disappointed with Barkley. He doesn't seem to have much more than anyone else on the pitch and, although this was the first full match I have seen him in, it has to be said, if he cannot stand out at this level, what chance in the Prem?

If he has potential he didn't show much here. Has a way to go to match up to Wilshere and the likes. Having said that, Leeds and Michael (Chopper) Brown were taking no prisoners and Barkley was wisely doing simple things for the most part.

He still looks short on confidence which could have been the legacy left by his injury and he needs to get over that to succeed.

Greg Hunt
42 Posted 21/10/2012 at 00:36:48
I also saw the game and I disagree with what Tom said about him not having more than other players on the pitch: in terms of technical ability on the ball and vision, he was head and shoulders above the players on either side (with the possible exception of Bothroyd, who's a better player than I thought he was). He did things and made passes that no-one else on the pitch attempted. There were a couple of touches and turns he did which were so good they looked out of place at that level of football. It'd be nice to see him play a bit further up the pitch where he could do some real damage.

What did concern me a bit though was the way he ambled about when Wednesday didn't have the ball. There was one point in the second half where Wednesday's defensive midfielder Semedo (admittedly a completely different type of player) literally ran rings around Barkley while trying to chase the Leeds players down – Barkley just kept on jogging at the same pace. You could also argue he should have been trying to close the opposition players down a bit more just before the Leeds goal.

Based on that performance I can't see him getting in the team ahead of Osman or Fellaini, who he'd be competing against – he definitely couldn't play a more defensive role in midfield. On the other hand, he's only 18, so he's got plenty of time on his side. In terms of the kind of player he is, he reminds me of Gascoigne a bit, but without the fire in his belly that Gazza had when he was younger. I'd say let him stay at Wednesday for a few months and see how he develops.
Phil Brown
43 Posted 21/10/2012 at 10:02:53
#367 Good post Greg. He ambled about late on in the second half because he was tired, he's done alot more running for SW than he ever has for England U19/21 or Everton reserves - just can't tackle.

Your absolutely correct that he should play further forward, to make best use of his creative skills and keep him away from his big weakness i.e. defending.

Can't believe that someone thinks he's overweight, part of his stamina problem will be that he's built like a centre -back..

He has more raw talent than Gazza - in that he's two footed and a good header of the ball - just needs developing correctly, only problem for him is that it is david moyes.

Can see arsenal buying him this summer ala walcott and oxlade-chamberlain and developing him into a proper player.

Whatever happens to the lad , a question mark is raised regarding David Moyes bringing through young talent.

Anichebe is the only player that has been here for a long period that has come through the youth system, and I don't see much of an improvement in him since he first became a first team player.

Rodwell and Rooney were sold for megabucks , but Rodwell even accounting for injuries was never seriously considered a first team player whilst Rooney was a cast iron certainty to get into anybody's first team. Osman and Hibbert have done so but Hibbert had already been around the first team and Osman had to go out on loan to prove to DM that he was good enough , whilst perfectly good club servants they are hardly overblessed with talent.

So who else has made their mark at Everton coming through the ranks during David Moyes reign, Vaughan to a certain extent , Duffy possibly but I won't hold my breath, many more have fallen by the wayside , although to be fair to DM I can't think of any player who has been the one that got away.

This much vaunted youth system and the myth that youth will get its chance at Goodison is yet to be proven at least as far as first team regulars are concerned.

Howard Kendall oversaw half of the all conquering 80s team coming through the ranks at Goodison. Considering how empty our coffers are you would have hoped to have seen many more players, granted youth players turning into first team regulars is a hard thing to achieve , but obviuosly I don't know if any of the young players currently in the youth set up will make it into the first team.

I appreciate that DM has enough on his plate seemingly running the club almost single-handed , but as a club we need to put even more emphasis on bringing a greater number of youth players into the first team especially given our financial situation.

For this reason it is important that the likes of Berkley get all the experience they need even if depressingly it is to go on and play for somebody with deeper pockets than ours.

Paul Rimmer
50 Posted 25/10/2012 at 05:12:06
Patrick, I can only think of Gary Stevens and Kevin Ratcliffe coming through the ranks in the 80s. Everton's youth policy does seem to bring through players. Some have stayed and played. Others have been sold. Moyes (like Kendall) has signed some great young players who have become better players whilst here. Our academy system seems to be as good as anyone's really - I can only think of West Ham's to be better. I think Barkley will come back a better player. He may have to go on loan again to be good enough for our first team though. Is that Moyes' fault?
