I was at The Emirates last night and feel compelled to write up some of my feelings on the performance. I can’t compete with the usual high class match reports from the likes of Lyndon and Ken so I thought I might just give my player ratings for what they’re worth:

Howard 7
Did not have that much to do and whilst you can’t really argue with a clean sheet there do remain some doubts over Tim’s all-round contribution. His coming for crosses does seem to have improved a little bit since his return from injury but last night I felt it was his distribution that let him down a touch: too many long kicks going to no-one or asking too much of Victor.

Coleman 9
Surely the most improved player at Goodison Park. Without being smug, I stuck up for him earlier this season thinking that his attacking game was worth a few defensive lapses but in fact now his defensive side looks just as strong as, if not stronger than, his attacking one. Made a few crucial interceptions and last ditch tackles as well as getting up and down the line all night. He could cross a touch more accurately but a fantastic night’s work from surely our first-choice right-back now.

Jagielka 9
His distribution is also not his strong point but last night he was immense defensively, getting in blocks and clearances and even (I think) setting up arguably our best chance with the through ball to Pienaar at the start. Keeping Arsenal at bay at the Emirates is no easy task but the skipper did a grand job.

Distin 8
The guy is 35. Incredible. Went toe to toe with Walcott in one vital foot race and was solid as a rock throughout. Like his CB partner, his distribution is not his strength, in fact his strength is probably his strength but, when you defend this well, you can be forgive some hoofs up the pitch.

Baines 6
Perhaps a victim of his own high standards but I thought Leighton looked a bit subdued. He obviously likes to get forward but too often he got caught out in advanced positions allowing breaks down his side. His crossing was not his best and he probably was not helped by Pienaar’s below-par showing. He defended well for the most part but did look not quite up to his earlier season form. Shame he didn’t slot the free kick.

Gibson 7
I am marking him down a point as he could and probably should have been sent off. Was pretty terrific apart from that with calm on the ball and quick effective distribution from the middle of the park. Not the most dynamic but really seems to pull the strings in the middle without taking unnecessary risks. I hope his operation in the Summer goes well.

Fellaini 8
One of his best games for a while. Terrier-like in regaining possession and hounding the Arsenal midfield out of their stride. He occasionally gets the chance to break and does so with less than lightning pace but deserves an 8 alone for his defensive efforts. I would hate to play against him.

Pienaar 5
In the first half, he was really dreadful. Losing the ball time and time again and misplacing passes. In the second, he was a bit better and there’s no doubting the effort he puts in for the cause as he covered every blade of grass. In my opinion, he has never quite hit the heights of his loan spell from Spurs last season and personally I would quite like a look at Oviedo on the left.

Mirallas 7
Moments of genius and then occasionally fading out of the game from time to time. I suppose that’s what wingers do. He seemed to be put though early on and had one or two opportunities around the box that he might have done better from. There’s no doubting the guy is absolute class and I look forward to seeing him next season with full fitness. He seems to have the work ethic to compliment his tricks and finesse and I think he will be a major player for us, injury allowing.

Barkley 8
At times in the first half you could see why Moyes has been reluctant to throw him in as he dawdled on the ball and got caught in possession a few times but one turn and through ball to Anichebe seemed to fill him with confidence and he didn’t look back. This was the Barkley that I wanted to see; not the finished article yet but capable of something special. He will hopefully start more games this season in this position. Exciting.

Anichebe 5
He has looked great in recent weeks but this looked like the Anichebe of old. Very little seemed to stick and by the last 30 mins he was spending more time on his arse than on his feet. Even on an off-day he did fashion one or two half-chances and I think Moyes should continue to persist with him.

Substitutes

Jelavic 6
Where have you gone, Nikica? To be fair, he had very little to work with and as always put in 110% but he just looks horribly like a lumbering Championship striker at the moment. He could do with a little more pace and better touch if he’s going to go out wide to work the channels. He just doesn’t really look like making things happen at the moment.

Naismith and Oviedo n/a
Not sure why Moyes waited so long to take off Victor who was clearly exhausted and barely able to jump for the continual long balls being fired his way in the last 25 mins. Naismith looks like an honest journeyman but Oviedo genuinely looks like he may have something about him; let’s see some more please Moyes.

Moyes 8
A bold and brave team selection that I think was pretty much spot on. The team seemed to go for it and this was definitely the best Everton display I’ve seen at the Emirates for a while. Shame we didn’t have some better options on the bench but even so he could have made some earlier subs. Still, a satisfying if perhaps ultimately unhelpful point from Moyes’s boys.

I hope that the same team plays in the same manner against Sunderland (Pienaar and Anichebe aside) and hopefully that should see us take 3 points and just about cling on to the Champions League pipe dream.

Totally agree wit the peanuts rating and am quite amazed how off the PAC he is, a couple of games out you would think he would be buzzing?

Fully agree on all the players here Sam. Would have given Moyes 9 for team selection and tactics, but he does bloody dither doesnt he!
If Anichebe hasnt done a thing after an hour he needs replacing. Think Jelly would have given them more to worry about. Oviedo should have been used earlier, again Moyes worried about the tracking back side of things, which Pienaar is good at. But this game was all about winning! One point keeps us in it, but it leaves us with no other option now than wins at Anfield and Chelsea......exactly!

I have to disagree about Howard, I thought he was far to slow coming out and if it wasn't for Girouds' poor finish, it would've been a certain goal for Arsenal.

I think too many costly mistakes by him this season have cost us... he needs replacing in the summer.

Anichebe 5 Jelavic 6??? I thought Jelavic was fairly lazy when he came on. Vic ran his bollox off and was still running in the 80th minute when Jelavic was strolling around the pitch, not getting back to help and mostly in offside positions. We had a decent break and one of our midfielders (can't remember who) kept delaying until Jelavic got himself back onside. By that time it was too late.

I was disappointed with Bainsy last night-free kicks hitting the wall and poor corners-but Pienaar`s loss of form is not helping him.You are a bit unfair to Victor as he was getting exorcets from Howard which were always going to be his markers ball. But he still ran his bollox off in the cause.
Barkley,I thought grew as the game progressed and could easily have won it for us.Once again,Davey`s softly, softly approach to his introduction has proved his wisdom in handling young players.
Thoroughly satisfactory and enjoyable performance which keeps us in the hunt for Europa,at least.

Richard, what utter tripe about Barkley.

I think you'll find that if the lad can play away to Arsenal like that, then he should've been more than capable of getting some more time on the pitch in the last 2 seasons, like so many of us have been saying.

Exactly what have Naismith or Neville contributed to deserve so much more playing time than Barkley? 20 or 30 minutes here or there at home against weaker sides are ideal for a young player who needs experience. If he'd have been given bits and pieces over the years, he could be running the show for us now and giving Ossie a rest, but I fear daveys "softly softly" approach has just set the kid's development back 2 years rather than brought him on. Same for Oviedo, he gets absolutely fuck all from Moyes, but we keep seeing the same old faces getting starts or coming off the bench in every game.

Factor in that Moyes is constantly harping on about his first 11 being knackered and too old, and it becomes very difficult to understand quite why he's so reluctant to play players with potential.

I'm not saying Barkley hasn't got areas he needs to improve on, because his judgement needs improving about when to get rid of the ball rather than dwell on it, but that is exactly the kind of thing that playing at the top level will teach him. Sitting on the bench isn't going to give him the experience he needs.

I've said it before that Neville and others cost us goals and give possession away the same as Barkley. But Barkley is young, learning and has the potential to improve and be a very good player for us.

Sam, agree almost completely with your assessment, but I think you're harsh on Anichebe. He worked really hard and got absolutely nothing from the officials. He kept running all the time he was on the pitch and was up against two big centre backs trying to control very difficult "passes".

Didn't see the match but if Pienaar's performance was half as bad as his QPR's he should be dropped.

Good post about a good performance Sam, and I saw the game pretty much the same way.

Agree on Howard's distribution. There was one time though that he got the ball in his hands, bowled out a great throw to Gibson who turned and drove forward into the Arsenal half... and I was just left thinking why the hell don't we do this more often?

We asked way too much of Big Vic with some of the high balls we aimlessly chucked at him.

I don't see how Moyes's selection was bold or brave. If you are referring to playing Barkley, I would label this move as about bloody time. Moyes playing Neville, Heitinga, and an exhausted Osman in midfield above Barkley beggars belief. He was our most dangerous player against Arsenal and could have turned vital games for us this season.

An excellent summary; the best and most comprehensive that I've seen for ages.
My only significant argument would be about Gibson. Yes he could have been sent off; but the yellow he got was a complete misjudgement by on the part of the referee, who, in my opinion, was lenient with the second (valid) one because he realised he'd made a cock-up earlier. So I'd make it eight for him.

Some might not agree, but Gibson is the heartbeat and Bracewell of that team. No coincidence that Wigan took us apart in the middle of the park when Gibson was sat on the bench.
David Ellis

Peter Bell, I do agree – almost: Gibson can't tackle like Bracewell, but there is no doubt the team seems to tick with him in it.

If only Bracewell had been fit for the '86 World Cup – Maradaona would never have scored and we would have been winners with 5 outfield Everton players in the starting 11.

Agree with all your starting 11 ratings.

When Jelavic came on he basically went and played left mid! I don't get it, the boy has no pace and can't really pass the ball very well but he is a natural goal scorer, just stick him on and tell him to stay in the box or don't bother playing him at all! Fuck running the channels – we have enough players now to do that, and for god's sake in training someone explain the offside rule to him!!!

Sam - Fair comment about the players but what about the fans - once again fantastic away support for the blues. Not as vocal as at WHL but we had to start the Arsenal fans off, my god they are a quiet fucking bunch.

I thought Gibson gave Wilshere and Arteta plenty to think about as they were mislaying more passes than we were in the first half – the booking didn't even slow him down. As for Fellaini, fucking immense, he shows no sign of being intimidated and (most) of his passing was a joy.

But at the end of day the Arsenal knew we were in their backyard, shoving shit right in their faces – and for me they did not like it one bit. Fucking lightweights. Lastly, just wish we had a striker – a real number 9.

ps: The Mirallas incident was a classic and really sums up the Arsenal team.

You would hope that this is case fully presented for Barkley getting more game time.

With Gibson, I would look to get his surgery done ASAP. If we end up having dead rubber games at the end of the season I wouldn't even leave it until the summer.

In terms of Moyes and his tactics on the night, it seems like he got them spot on. We had to defend but seemed to do so in a controlled manner instead of desperation stuff.

I thought Howard played well, especially his quicky reaction to come out and block a shot at the far post during a scramble in the box after a corner in the secoind half (cant remember who he saved from). I am noticing the last while his goalkeeping style has changed, probably due to coaching. He is catching crosses more in tight situations rather than punching and his distribution is more varied. He has done well since he came back in after injury IMO.

Sam, I agree with the majority of your ratings - some, completely spot on. My overall thoughts on our performance - wow. I thought the boys had linked well, work-rate second to none, and the cover defense when Arsenal countered... great team/individual effort.

Barkley - I concentrated on him when watching replay. My initial thoughts, immense - considering the limited time he's played with the boys (and when I mean limited I mean actual Premier League games), the pressure he was put under, and his limited experience, he justified (I believe) his position for next weeks game. When he received the ball, he linked up well with the wingers continuing the flow of our attack and ensure that we continue creating pressure. There was a shot he did around the 65min mark where he created a bit of room from nothing and without a run up, punched it just a whisker wide of the top-right corner post. Exciting times ahead for Barkley and us Evertonian fans!

Mirallas - Such class! I thought work-rate today, was great. His link play and understanding with the likes of Gibson and Barkley was great to watch, all balls were played forward and kept pressure. You can tell he's getting his confidence with his play. For example, 32nd min he tracking back, one-on-one with Gibbs and managed to get the ball and completely flick it back and start the counter. Definitely ticking all the boxes I guess, with the work rate he expects.

Coleman - defended brilliantly all game. 76min sticks when Arsenal were countering and it was essentially 5/6 on 4. Ox-Chamberlain was unselfish and decided to cross in. Coleman put in a last ditch effort and managed to put a foot in front of what appeared to be a definite goal.

Unfortunately not the 3pts we desperately wanted, however definitely a performance to be proud of! Until it's mathematically impossible to make top 4, I'll continue to dream and hope we somehow make it!

Regarding Gibson, theres nothing special about him at all. He's a decent holding midfield player.

The reason we play so much better with him in the squad is not rocket science. Its because without him, we usually have either neville or heitinga in there and they are not midfield players and they usually play shit in that position. Hence we're playing almost with a man short.

Its a travesty that we've been doing this for so many years. There is simply no excuse for playing players out of position in such a crucial area of the field on such a consistent basis.

Gibson is a defensive liability. Slow to track back, he tends to watch while others get on with it. If he tackles, which is not very often, he uses his body when he should be using his feet. The sooner he gets his leg fixed the better. His fans may need glasses but Moyes doesn't.
Jay Harris
24 Posted 18/04/2013 at 17:42:21
Wayne and Harold have to disagree with you on Gibson and I don't need glasses.

For me Gibson is the heartbeat of the team always available for a pass never panicks under pressure and a top passer of the ball short or long. I don't have a problem with him defensively as IMO he tracks back well.

Results with him in the side compare very favourably with him not in the side and it is not always Heitinga or Neville that take his place.

Note on big Vic: although it wasnt his best performance by a longshot he was given hopeful punts in the air against two lumps of centre halves and expected to chase down all night. I did however feel he should have done better with the through ball from Barkley.

Sam
Moyes 8?
If his team selection was bold why didn't we win? That Arsenal team was the worst I have seen in a long time and they were for the taking.
Why did he waste time by putting Naismith and Oviedo on in injury time?
Hardly bold was it? If he was tactically astute he would have realised that Vic was tiring and should have taken him off earlier and not taken Ross off, who was our bright spark at the time.
I know it was a good performance at the Emirates and you are a supporter of Davey, but I wouldn't have given him an 8.

Gibson has a great range of passing, although I have to agree that comparing to those square pegs anyone would look good. Is he a better player than Mikel when he left?

As for a defensive liability what a joke. How many games have we lost with him in the side, and how many of those were down to his errors? He's one of the first names on my team sheet, I just wish we could find a couple more of his class at that cost to pad the threadbare squad.

I agree with your ratings Sam with exception to Vic who didn't have much to work with. Although as Eugene pointed out on another thread, his tantrums are cringeworthy. Barkley did well, but didn't do anything that Osman doesn't do in a match. If Osman had performed like that, the comments would be 'a single shot and one decent through ball is not good enough'. Ross will come good, there is no doubt. But unfortunately he is used by some as a weapon to criticize the manager, instead of judged on his merits. Comparing his performances since he came back in, to last time he played, shows a huge difference in maturity. I think his coaching has been spot on. And it looks like he will mature just as Osman. loses his edge. Just need a striker now that can put the ball in the net. Can Mirallas fill that role? He still looks more of a winger than an out and out striker to me. More Ashley Young than Van Persie.

Looks like Baines is going through the motions... burn out, I think. Though it would be hard to criticize him after a great season. It's been a great effort by the players, but looks like we're going to be left to reflect on a lot of what-ifs. A real shame after I thought we could do it this season.
Harold Matthews
31 Posted 19/04/2013 at 13:45:53
Ian, For the 5% of the 90 minutes when he is on the ball I have few complaints. Despite a lack of pace he plays in a very intelligent manner and seldom wastes the ball.

Unfortunately, for the other 95% without the ball he doesn't put in a full shift and gets away with it. Fellaini, Pienaar and especially Osman have to put in a double shift to cover for him and receive heavy unfair criticism.

Moyes doesn't miss much and is already making noises about the leg excuse.

Peter Bell
32 Posted 19/04/2013 at 14:52:33
So Harold, against Wigan, where were your three superstars of Fellaini,Pienaar,Osman when they tore our midfield to bits. Saying Gibson only contributes to 5% of the game is an absolute joke. He came off the bench against Wigan and did more in 10 minutes than your hero Osman
Peter Bell
33 Posted 19/04/2013 at 15:04:34
Harold, you say Moyes doesnt miss much, can you explain his assessment of Koldrup, Beattie, Van De Meyde, Johnson, Castillo. All players he paid good money for, where as Gibson at 500k looks to be a better bargain than even Cahill
Denis Richardson
34 Posted 19/04/2013 at 15:16:14
Sam - I actually agree with you on every rating here.....

Given Pienaars performance in the match and also resent performances, it's a bit odd as to why Oviedo isn't getting more game time. He seems to be tidy on the ball and has a good left peg. Pienaar is either knackered, off form or both - hopefully he finds form again soon, if not Moyes needs to take him off and give Oviedo a start or at least more minutes on the pitch in the 2ns half.
