I also like the idea of Alan Stubbs being his assistant provided he can win Stubbsy's respect. I suspect that whoever comes in as Everton's next manager will have to win the respect of Stubbs, Weir and Ferguson. If he can do that he will be successful because he will be inheriting a good group of players. I just suspect that these 3 senior people in the club have the confidence of the players.

That man might be Rangnick but he needs to commit to a real future not a fancy half way house, I think it would end disastrously if he didn't.

We ought to remember that Arsene Wenger's first number two appointment was Pat Rice! Did this mean he was non-committal? No! He's now the longest serving manager in the Premiership.

Second more than a few people have talked about Nevilles promise as a coach...don't think anyone argues he has potential. Its also clear that Pip does have genuine affection for the club, he's had experience from Sir Alex, 5yrs of Presbyterian football (advanced-level) and could now benefit from say 3-4yrs working for a forward-thinking technical manager.

Taking over the reins after then, with Rangnick moved to Director of Football, gives Pip the ability to take the reigns of a big club with someone there to hold his hand and take the scouting/signing job responsibility. On paper its not a bad idea.

Impressing with his impeccable English ?! Great but I assume he also talked sense and demonstrated how he will take us from 6th to 4th with a few cups along the way ? Also how you can actually go to Analfield and actually win would be nice too.

This idea, in my opinion, works. I like the idea of a manager with a plan to pass on his experience to a successor and then move upstairs in a few years time. I wouldn't know who to choose as assistant because I have no idea how good/bad they are as coaches. But this idea of coming in, making your mark and handing over the reins is ideal for longevity. He may only stay as manager for a few years but he'll groom someone to stay for longer.

If it was a choice on paper I would say that only Phil Neville is worthy of it based on his years playing under SAF and knowing what it takes to win. Playing under Moyes and captaining his side for years shows his leadership skills. If people think he's in line for Utd job at some point, then surely that shows what charcter he is too.

The whole thing of Martinez doesnt sit right with me, purely because his highest place finish with wigan is 15th, and the relegation thing is not helping, he may have won as FA Cup, but I wouldnt want that at the cost of our premier league status.

Maybe at everton he would do better, but his record is not good enough for a team of our ambitions.

If Rangwick is actually saying 'I want the Everton job. I expect to be in it a long time, but nothing lasts forever so to boot I'll coach up a bright young Evertonian, who may then make it into management' then fine, but in my guts it sounds like he just wants a project for a couple of years not a long term job.

Once our next manager goes I want the best man appointed for the job at that time, not someone who's been set up based on a decision taken now - with no managerial experience at all as surely there will be better candidates when that decision comes around?

I'm with Steve Telford - if Neville / Weir / Stubbs want to manage they should fly the nest and get themselves to a Bury / Dundee / Tranmere and actually start managing rather than staying in the classroom.

Why not appoint a number 2, that actually wants to be a number 2, only wants to be and remain a number 2, and makes a brilliant number 2?

The assistant manager's role at Everton would be the perfect position for Messrs Stubbs,Weir, Ferguson or Neville to find out if they have what it takes to be # 1.

I think of the 4, Ferguson is the "perfect number 2". He would certainly be my choice as my right hand man because he is as hard as nails and I think once you had won his trust he would be very loyal. I'm not sure it would be good for the big man to be given a # 1 role. But he would definitely be "the best # 2" in the business - better than Joe Jordan even.

In this situation we are talking about someone who could step into the top job in 2 or 3 years time. Stubbs, Weir and Neville all fit into that category. I like Stubbs - he was a fighter on and off the field. Weir has got the look about him. Neville will be a manager one day but not at Everton - he is the wrong fit.

The Chinese have a saying - "with crisis comes opportunity". Next week could be the turning point in the club's history that we have all been hoping and waiting for.

Perhaps this man Rangnick has given Bill Kenwright a different perspective of the future to what he had in mind before they met. I hope so. We want someone who has the managerial skills, technical ability and vision to lead the football club to greatness.

It would be great for those older fans such as myself see us back at the top, but the ones who really deserve this are the younger fans who have never experienced the feeling of happiness that comes with being "The Best".

Bill Kenwright has an enormous responsibility on his shoulders - he must get this right.

It's wrong to pin your hopes on finding a long-term (10yr?) manager, so I really would try to forget about such things.

Managerial contracts are more likely to be a few years long, 5 at best with most managers only serving 3 or 4 tops.

Rangnick sounds like he has a solid idea of what he would like to achieve, and if that plan is based around say a 3 or 4 year deal, with a number 2 being groomed for the position, then I say go for it. He appears to be a man with a plan and we should jump on the German bandwagon which is rolling along nicely at the moment.

We need change, we need a shakeup, and we need a forward thinking plan. Martinez? Too young, too risky in the way he sends his teams out - I don't buy into the smiling Spaniard routine, or the way his shabbily prepared teams go out & play.

Rangnick has a reputation - a very good one, in Germany and I have it on the authority of a couple of German friends (Bayern fans) that he would be a great appointment and one that European football would take notice at. He's a smart operator with a good work ethic, and would really make waves at Everton - something we desperately need in my opinion. We've had (essentially) a yes-man in the job for 11 years and while it's made us stable, we've lacked any real 'edge' to both our play and the way Everton presents itself as a club. Rangnick would bring new ideas, new faces, and a different way of doing things. A brave appointment it would be, and a brave appointment is what we need.

Martinez? Who would care or notice other than us? He'd be another yes-man to be molly-coddled by BK, a lap-dog manager in waiting - not exactly inspiring to me.

So we speculate, and we wait....until Monday apparently.

I've googled him and didn't get much further than Austrian Red Bull shite. What the fuck has he done? Has he won cups, leagues? Going forward, how the fuck has BK managed to drag this scenario out whilst other EPL teams have sacked managers, done the media thing then rehired new managers. Meantime fuckwit BK seems intent on interviewing every unemployed footy manager across Europe hoping that he looks super professional and getting to see his name in all the rags - tart!!!! I mean, I've got 40 quid on Martinez (at 7/4) so this Rangnick and Porto bloke can go and do one.

I disagree with an earlier post that Martinez would be the most holistic manager. On the contrary, everything about the man suggests quite the opposite. He has just fled a sinking ship, he has no desire to see out his plan (whatever that may be). It's staggering he hasn't been relegated with Wigan before; his repeated negative goal difference and and arrogance towards Wigan (the way he's leaving) suggest a man who's more concerned about his reputation than his club - and there is no sense of seeing a project through to the end. His appointment would be akin to that of Mike Walker - and the Board should know better than to be impressed by Wigan beating us in the Cup at GP.

I really hope Relegation Roberto is dirtched in favour of Ralf (and/or Vitor). Does Bill read ToffeeWeb?

• 2nd: Grooming an internal (I'd go for Stubbs though only because I think Duncmania would go into overdrive and maybe cause distraction)
• 3rd He'd be taking Everton in a completely different football direction.

Whilst I agree Moyes has done us proud, I also think we should've done this 3 years ago. Europe (Chelsea apart) has been dominated by Spain and now Germany. All that process would take time: probably 4 years of grooming whether they would be able to be patient whilst it's in progress depends on their commitment to the cause I suppose.

That doesn't mean we're going to suffer in the league too much... if at all. Anyone can see we have quality, the rest is just a few ageing players at the back and Pienaar on the wing; not too drastic in my opinion.

Anyone wanting a foreigner in charge can forget a 10-year commitment – they don't do that; that's why I would snatch at the opportunity while we have the chance and learn from Ralf a completely different way and approach – imbedded into the youth teams and coaches while they're still in the learning process.

That for me would work: Rangnick implementing the strategic plan, Martinez managing the team and an old Everton defender maintaining tradition and pride and defensive nous on the training pitch.

I think the delay in naming a manager could be many reasons: maybe they can't agree as to who the new manager wants to bring with him as assistants... maybe BK wants one of our guys to be the Number 2 to carry on the consistency. But just maybe they haven't made up their mind who to choose. I would imagine that BK might have been close to giving Martinez the nod so maybe there is some truth in the press that he was impressed by what Rangnick had to say.

1. Wigan can bounce straight back (but he takes no responsibility for relegation and won't be there himself);

2. He talks (albeit unconvincingly) about the club's 'football philosophy', yet he jumps the sinking ship at the first available opportunity;

3. He gives the distinct impression that winning the Cup makes up for relegation a bit.

Is this really the man we want to see leading our club into the Brave New World? Premier League experience? Yes. Premier League failure? Yes.

we need to build on Moyes's foundations (such as they are), NOT strive for a feelgood factor under a smiling salesman.

Anyone who thinks they are NOT good enough to get Wigan out of the CHAMPIONSHIP should not be considering the Everton job. No way.

Although I hated the thought of one of the backroom staff becoming manager, I did like the idea of the continuity and stability that would provide.

I also strongly believe that a manager should pick his own assistant though, which is why I've never supported the idea of the new manager being forced to work alongside Alan Stubbs (or Weir/Ferguson). However, if Rangnick suggested the idea during his interview, it would be the best of both worlds; continuity & stability combined with change & progress.
