The Rumour Mill
Assistant would be internal hire for Rangnick the groomer
Rangnick reportedly "blew Kenwright away" in his meeting with the Blues Chairman on Thursday where he explained how he would appoint an internal hire like Phil Neville, Alan Stubbs or David Weir as his assistant manager with a view to grooming him as his long-term successor.
Kenwright interviewed his internal candidates first and, though it appears as though he has dismissed the idea of handing any of them the hotseat straight away because of their inexperience, Rangnick's option could help keep one of those important backroom staff members at Everton.
The 54-year-old German is currently sporting director at Red Bull Salzburg in Austria and it would appear his inclination towards a more supervisory capacity means he isn't looking for a long-term role as team manager at Everton.
Rather, he would work on developing one of the club's up-and-coming coaches to eventually take over while, hopefully, rebuilding a squad that is one of the oldest in the Premier League before, perhaps, moving upstairs in a Director of Football role.
The Daily Mail, meanwhile, suggest that in addition to interest in Roberto Martinez from Malaga, Everton face competition from Manchester City for the Spaniard. They contend that, should Manuel Pellegrini succeed Roberto Mancini at the Etihad Stadium, he would select Martinez as his number 2.

I mean fine in a way..um..I suppose.
But I just think, right this minute, we just need/want to be told who our new manager is.
Whatever plans there are for the future, speaking for myself, you can let me know sometime...well, in the future.
235 Posted 02/06/2013 at 00:57:57
Pareira supposedly likes this kind of set up and I think Lyndon has already mentioned this as a rumour??

242 Posted 02/06/2013 at 01:32:29
I also like the idea of Alan Stubbs being his assistant provided he can win Stubbsy's respect. I suspect that whoever comes in as Everton's next manager will have to win the respect of Stubbs, Weir and Ferguson. If he can do that he will be successful because he will be inheriting a good group of players. I just suspect that these 3 senior people in the club have the confidence of the players.
Lewis, I honestly can't see us getting both Rangnick and Pereira, too much money involved.
Eugene, aren't you feeling very mystical today? You are a rum 'un.
244 Posted 02/06/2013 at 02:18:09
PN as assistant? No thanks, his only long term thoughts lie toward OT, where he will be groomed for that eventual day of succession.
How would a German and a Portugese work together, the efficiency and technical acumen of a German mind vs the laid back Mediterranean mañana. What language would they converse in? Would things be lost in translation, even if both spoke good English.
Semantics I know and not my problem, but I can't scratch that itch.
245 Posted 02/06/2013 at 02:40:21
But still no to PN, yet be swayed about Stubbs/Weir.

If true (?) this is a bit avant garde considering all Bill's 'supposed' to want is a replacement heatshield... and I do admit I kinda like it. Maybe Bill will replace our interim defunct motto with ' Who Dares Wins'
Off topic slightly; I see our playskool badge is up and running on the OS.

It has come to something when you are left hoping and crossing fingers that our Clubs custodians will have the bravery and foresight to do the bleedin obvious.

1 guy has to be clearly in charge, or else issues arise. if you order pizza and get every toping in the shop because you like them all individually, it takes just one bite to know that a simple margarita would have been a better choice.
And as for grooming successor, come on the future is next season, not 5 seasons from now. if somebody internal wants to go into management, let them go cut their teeth and prove themselves in a lower division, as it used to be.

Where's the ambition in all this? We need someone now and get us buzzin... that's if you go on the latest rumours!
263 Posted 02/06/2013 at 06:36:10
All sounds very non-committal to me.
'I want to be manager, but if it all goes tits up I can get out quick and hand the hot potato to a novice club man of your choice - besides developing him was what I was brought here for any way wasn't it?
No wonder the players never really gave me 100%, they knew I was never going to be in it for the long haul....?'
I want a manager, and a bloody good one at that, with a plan on how we're going to get back to the top and stay here.
That man might be Rangnick but he needs to commit to a real future not a fancy half way house, I think it would end disastrously if he didn't.
265 Posted 02/06/2013 at 07:17:00
268 Posted 02/06/2013 at 07:17:20
We ought to remember that Arsene Wenger's first number two appointment was Pat Rice! Did this mean he was non-committal? No! He's now the longest serving manager in the Premiership.
Don't jump the gun, or put words in his mouth, this sounds an interesting idea!
275 Posted 02/06/2013 at 07:41:45
Second more than a few people have talked about Nevilles promise as a coach...don't think anyone argues he has potential. Its also clear that Pip does have genuine affection for the club, he's had experience from Sir Alex, 5yrs of Presbyterian football (advanced-level) and could now benefit from say 3-4yrs working for a forward-thinking technical manager.
Taking over the reins after then, with Rangnick moved to Director of Football, gives Pip the ability to take the reigns of a big club with someone there to hold his hand and take the scouting/signing job responsibility. On paper its not a bad idea.
276 Posted 02/06/2013 at 08:41:28
Impressing with his impeccable English ?! Great but I assume he also talked sense and demonstrated how he will take us from 6th to 4th with a few cups along the way ? Also how you can actually go to Analfield and actually win would be nice too.
277 Posted 02/06/2013 at 08:50:55
This idea, in my opinion, works. I like the idea of a manager with a plan to pass on his experience to a successor and then move upstairs in a few years time. I wouldn't know who to choose as assistant because I have no idea how good/bad they are as coaches. But this idea of coming in, making your mark and handing over the reins is ideal for longevity. He may only stay as manager for a few years but he'll groom someone to stay for longer.
Let's do this
280 Posted 02/06/2013 at 08:53:02
ps: I think Duncan will make a brilliant manager one day so we have to keep him at club, the respect he must have & they would all play 100% for him.
281 Posted 02/06/2013 at 08:58:50
We don't want Relegation Roberto - I really hope Bill has received that message loud and clear.
VP and/or RR excite me - especially with big Dunc in as no 2 (or 3!).
283 Posted 02/06/2013 at 09:04:30
Any reason why Dunc should be number 2?
If it was a choice on paper I would say that only Phil Neville is worthy of it based on his years playing under SAF and knowing what it takes to win. Playing under Moyes and captaining his side for years shows his leadership skills. If people think he's in line for Utd job at some point, then surely that shows what charcter he is too.
284 Posted 02/06/2013 at 09:02:43
Will it work? Who knows...
290 Posted 02/06/2013 at 09:13:15
I have to admit a week ago I was all for Martinez taking over(I had voted fro Di Matteo to take over) but the more I read about Mr. Rangnick the more I like his approach. He's not a yes man and knows how to build from the ground up. I know Martinez is a good manager but the smell of relegation that he has on him at the moment isn't helping win many people over.
If BK does go with the German school of science then my vote is for Weir to take over at #2. I just have a gut feel about Weir leading the team to great things in the future...
291 Posted 02/06/2013 at 09:29:18
292 Posted 02/06/2013 at 09:32:49
The whole thing of Martinez doesnt sit right with me, purely because his highest place finish with wigan is 15th, and the relegation thing is not helping, he may have won as FA Cup, but I wouldnt want that at the cost of our premier league status.
Maybe at everton he would do better, but his record is not good enough for a team of our ambitions.
293 Posted 02/06/2013 at 09:38:39
I would be happy with either of them as they both seem to have a plan.
294 Posted 02/06/2013 at 09:27:35
If Rangwick is actually saying 'I want the Everton job. I expect to be in it a long time, but nothing lasts forever so to boot I'll coach up a bright young Evertonian, who may then make it into management' then fine, but in my guts it sounds like he just wants a project for a couple of years not a long term job.
Once our next manager goes I want the best man appointed for the job at that time, not someone who's been set up based on a decision taken now - with no managerial experience at all as surely there will be better candidates when that decision comes around?
I'm with Steve Telford - if Neville / Weir / Stubbs want to manage they should fly the nest and get themselves to a Bury / Dundee / Tranmere and actually start managing rather than staying in the classroom.
Why not appoint a number 2, that actually wants to be a number 2, only wants to be and remain a number 2, and makes a brilliant number 2?

Not very, the power simply isn't there at the moment.
Truth is, I shouldn't have mentioned my mystical background on TW, the spirit world doesn't like it when you're frivolous about them and I suspect I've been given a yellow card.
310 Posted 02/06/2013 at 10:22:46
I'd have liked the idea of a Rangnick/Pereira axis myself, we need new not recycled
313 Posted 02/06/2013 at 09:51:12
The assistant manager's role at Everton would be the perfect position for Messrs Stubbs,Weir, Ferguson or Neville to find out if they have what it takes to be # 1.
I think of the 4, Ferguson is the "perfect number 2". He would certainly be my choice as my right hand man because he is as hard as nails and I think once you had won his trust he would be very loyal. I'm not sure it would be good for the big man to be given a # 1 role. But he would definitely be "the best # 2" in the business - better than Joe Jordan even.
In this situation we are talking about someone who could step into the top job in 2 or 3 years time. Stubbs, Weir and Neville all fit into that category. I like Stubbs - he was a fighter on and off the field. Weir has got the look about him. Neville will be a manager one day but not at Everton - he is the wrong fit.
The Chinese have a saying - "with crisis comes opportunity". Next week could be the turning point in the club's history that we have all been hoping and waiting for.
Perhaps this man Rangnick has given Bill Kenwright a different perspective of the future to what he had in mind before they met. I hope so. We want someone who has the managerial skills, technical ability and vision to lead the football club to greatness.
It would be great for those older fans such as myself see us back at the top, but the ones who really deserve this are the younger fans who have never experienced the feeling of happiness that comes with being "The Best".
Bill Kenwright has an enormous responsibility on his shoulders - he must get this right.

It's wrong to pin your hopes on finding a long-term (10yr?) manager, so I really would try to forget about such things.
Managerial contracts are more likely to be a few years long, 5 at best with most managers only serving 3 or 4 tops.
Rangnick sounds like he has a solid idea of what he would like to achieve, and if that plan is based around say a 3 or 4 year deal, with a number 2 being groomed for the position, then I say go for it. He appears to be a man with a plan and we should jump on the German bandwagon which is rolling along nicely at the moment.
We need change, we need a shakeup, and we need a forward thinking plan. Martinez? Too young, too risky in the way he sends his teams out - I don't buy into the smiling Spaniard routine, or the way his shabbily prepared teams go out & play.
Rangnick has a reputation - a very good one, in Germany and I have it on the authority of a couple of German friends (Bayern fans) that he would be a great appointment and one that European football would take notice at. He's a smart operator with a good work ethic, and would really make waves at Everton - something we desperately need in my opinion. We've had (essentially) a yes-man in the job for 11 years and while it's made us stable, we've lacked any real 'edge' to both our play and the way Everton presents itself as a club. Rangnick would bring new ideas, new faces, and a different way of doing things. A brave appointment it would be, and a brave appointment is what we need.
Martinez? Who would care or notice other than us? He'd be another yes-man to be molly-coddled by BK, a lap-dog manager in waiting - not exactly inspiring to me.
So we speculate, and we wait....until Monday apparently.
Tuesday....
OK maybe Wednesday....
Always keep em hanging on for more...
335 Posted 02/06/2013 at 11:17:11
Paul Ellam #293 - " ... as they both seem to have a plan".
What's Rangnick's plan? Do you know? Is it "win as many games as possible, especially against the RS"?
Chris Morris #277 - "The more I hear about this Ralf Rangnick, the more I like him".
I've googled him and didn't get much further than Austrian Red Bull shite. What the fuck has he done? Has he won cups, leagues? Or can he talk as much bollocks as BK and sound so totally un-convincing that you sort of actually believe him? Will he work here or just pop over on Saturdays for a "chat" with his number 2?
Going forward, how the fuck has BK managed to drag this scenario out whilst other EPL teams have sacked managers, done the media thing then rehired new managers. Meantime fuckwit BK seems intent on interviewing every unemployed footy manager across Europe hoping that he looks super professional and getting to see his name in all the rags - tart!!!! I mean, I've got 40 quid on Martinez (at 7/4) so this Rangnick and Porto bloke can go and do one.
337 Posted 02/06/2013 at 11:42:25
I disagree with an earlier post that Martinez would be the most holistic manager. On the contrary, everything about the man suggests quite the opposite. He has just fled a sinking ship, he has no desire to see out his plan (whatever that may be). It's staggering he hasn't been relegated with Wigan before; his repeated negative goal difference and and arrogance towards Wigan (the way he's leaving) suggest a man who's more concerned about his reputation than his club - and there is no sense of seeing a project through to the end. His appointment would be akin to that of Mike Walker - and the Board should know better than to be impressed by Wigan beating us in the Cup at GP.
I really hope Relegation Roberto is dirtched in favour of Ralf (and/or Vitor). Does Bill read ToffeeWeb?

351 Posted 02/06/2013 at 12:01:22
• 1st: A new manager with a vision;
• 2nd: Grooming an internal (I'd go for Stubbs though only because I think Duncmania would go into overdrive and maybe cause distraction)
• 3rd He'd be taking Everton in a completely different football direction.
Whilst I agree Moyes has done us proud, I also think we should've done this 3 years ago. Europe (Chelsea apart) has been dominated by Spain and now Germany. All that process would take time: probably 4 years of grooming whether they would be able to be patient whilst it's in progress depends on their commitment to the cause I suppose.
That doesn't mean we're going to suffer in the league too much... if at all. Anyone can see we have quality, the rest is just a few ageing players at the back and Pienaar on the wing; not too drastic in my opinion.
Anyone wanting a foreigner in charge can forget a 10-year commitment – they don't do that; that's why I would snatch at the opportunity while we have the chance and learn from Ralf a completely different way and approach – imbedded into the youth teams and coaches while they're still in the learning process.
355 Posted 02/06/2013 at 12:32:55
Duncan played through pain?????
There was a song about him being a tampon because he missed so many games with injury.
356 Posted 02/06/2013 at 12:43:24
What, is Jimmy Tarbuck the new assistant manager?
367 Posted 02/06/2013 at 13:31:41
Sound was/is Duncan.

382 Posted 02/06/2013 at 14:41:51
Try googling harder fella!!
Rangnick has won cups, leagues and even got a team to the Champions League semi final (trumps Martinez) and his plan is the main topic of the article if you read it through.
Regarding Pereira, he has also won cups and leagues (trumps Martinez) and his plan is to play attacking, attractive football along with a pressing game (like a Barca team) but he also knows how to set a defence out properly judging by his clubs so far. He sounds a very ambitious manager too in his interviews.
I don't dislike Martinez but just feel these 2 are better candidates for our club if it wants to show ambition and forward thinking.

407 Posted 02/06/2013 at 15:47:50
408 Posted 02/06/2013 at 15:58:51
That for me would work: Rangnick implementing the strategic plan, Martinez managing the team and an old Everton defender maintaining tradition and pride and defensive nous on the training pitch.
Fuck Phil "Man Utd pyjamas" Neville.
415 Posted 02/06/2013 at 16:09:05
I think the delay in naming a manager could be many reasons: maybe they can't agree as to who the new manager wants to bring with him as assistants... maybe BK wants one of our guys to be the Number 2 to carry on the consistency. But just maybe they haven't made up their mind who to choose. I would imagine that BK might have been close to giving Martinez the nod so maybe there is some truth in the press that he was impressed by what Rangnick had to say.

427 Posted 02/06/2013 at 16:37:59
1. Wigan can bounce straight back (but he takes no responsibility for relegation and won't be there himself);
2. He talks (albeit unconvincingly) about the club's 'football philosophy', yet he jumps the sinking ship at the first available opportunity;
3. He gives the distinct impression that winning the Cup makes up for relegation a bit.
Is this really the man we want to see leading our club into the Brave New World? Premier League experience? Yes. Premier League failure? Yes.
we need to build on Moyes's foundations (such as they are), NOT strive for a feelgood factor under a smiling salesman.
428 Posted 02/06/2013 at 16:48:09
Anyone who thinks they are NOT good enough to get Wigan out of the CHAMPIONSHIP should not be considering the Everton job. No way.
436 Posted 02/06/2013 at 16:35:22
Although I hated the thought of one of the backroom staff becoming manager, I did like the idea of the continuity and stability that would provide.
I also strongly believe that a manager should pick his own assistant though, which is why I've never supported the idea of the new manager being forced to work alongside Alan Stubbs (or Weir/Ferguson). However, if Rangnick suggested the idea during his interview, it would be the best of both worlds; continuity & stability combined with change & progress.

If BK was listening to us, particularly on TW, he would have seen Steve Ferns and his articles on Bielsa. I don't want Bielsa rotting in Italy or going to Brazil, I want him to come here.
As much as Clarke has had a good season, he has the personality of an Andrex Wet Wipe.

Martinez not my first choice but would well prefer him over the dour Clarke who has the personality of a belisha beacon!
474 Posted 02/06/2013 at 18:45:29
So he has been relegated many top managers have, if he does get the job just let the man get on with it.
I think we will be very happy, he is not someone that will leave after 12months.
He is in it for the long haul...
475 Posted 02/06/2013 at 18:49:55
Maybe he's been sitting on a Caribbean beach sipping cocktails with Jenny and someone else is pulling the strings.
Maybe just maybe Moyes has been conducting the interviews. Now there's a conspiracy theory.

478 Posted 02/06/2013 at 19:06:49
Sid: personality is less important, in my view. Clarke has dine a tremendous job at WBA - but I reiterate, I'd prefer Pereira or Rangnick [sheds a forlorn tear :-)]
479 Posted 02/06/2013 at 19:05:47
However I thing the preference right now is for Pereira and the absolute dream team would be Rangnick as Director of football with Pereira as manager. That's not going to happen but we can still dream.
The bottom line is I will be happy with ant of the 'three' and will get behind whoever of them is appointed!
We will know soon!
