Report Goodbye, old friend Dave Williams 21/05/2025 11comments (last) Everton 2 - 0 Southampton When the kick-off time for the last men’s game at Goodison Park was announced, I groaned out loud. A noon kick-off meant that the West Country Blues coach would leave at 5 am, meaning an alarm set for 3:15 am. Four different alarms were set in the Williams house to guard against accidents and, having woken Jane and the two dogs, I staggered out of the house for the 45-minute drive to Taunton. The coach was filled by 72 diehards, some who had started even earlier than me with a 2-hour drive up from Penzance. A few familiar faces were missing, having sent an advance party to have a lengthy farewell session around the city watering holes. With such an early start, the roads were empty and we made excellent time. There had been some discussion about us all singing In My Life on the way up but I think it was decided that it might be a bit too much for the coach driver to bear along with such an early start. The walk across Stanley Park reminded me that there are a number of advantages of moving stadiums, a major one being that we will no longer have to see the Meccano monstrosity in red as we walk to the ground! As I reached the players car park, the pavement was absolutely rammed with the fans waiting to greet the coach. I doubled back around the stadium, noting how run down she looks from the outside, and made my way to what I anticipated to be a packed Harlech. How wrong can you be – the pub was virtually empty with bar maids waiting to find a customer to serve. I joined Neil, Bill, Mark, Steve and later John Snr and Danny who had yet again managed to get a ticket. A couple of beers at almost half the price of what I pay at my local in Liverton and I got to my seat just before the players came out. I would echo here something which Danny said in his report – just in their warm up, the Southampton players were awful, unable to trap the ball. We should be able to celebrate in style today! It was marvellous to see Seamus lead us out and very sad to see him go off so early as he had looked to be pretty sharp. I guessed that Doucoure was saying farewell by being selected and he was very emotional as he was given a marvellous ovation by one of the noisiest crowds I had ever witnessed. Waiting for the start, I reflected on my Everton journey. It started in 1963 when I was 7 years old. My uncle – Trevor Mayor – had three season tickets which he used to entertain business contacts. He gave the se tickets to my dad to use when they were not needed by him… and what a view! Third row of the Main Stand, in touching distance of Sir John Moores. Trevor stopped renewing these tickets just after the title win in 1970. So my parents gave me a season ticket for The Paddock which I kept until Bebington Hockey Club became more of a pull on a Saturday. I still went to all non- Saturday games. Saturday nights out with girlfriends became difficult to navigate after yet another defeat for the Blues and being smashed to bits by self-styled hard men wielding heavy wooden sticks. Moves to London and then Devon, together with a family and a divorce, made it difficult to see as much of the Blues as I would have liked but the appearance on the scene of the West Country Blues has made it easier to get a match ticket and transport to the game – thanks to Mike and Ian and the rest of the boys! Sorry to have rambled… back to the game. I’d never heard the fans sing There She Goes before but what a din! Possible the loudest I have ever heard and I hope it becomes a feature. I thought we played well in parts, Pickford absolutely in his element, and the two young centre-backs looked very calm and solid. Garner bossed the midfield and Ndiaye and Beto looked dangerous. If we can get a winger with real pace and a physically imposing defensive midfielder (Souchek would do), together with a playmaker, then we will be in business . Whether we can score enough goals without changing strikers I don’t know. I love Beto for his effort and clear love for the club, and the two goals he had disallowed were expertly taken by him. Calvert-Lewin for my money is a class player and will score goals but will he be fit often enough? We need strong, hungry and young players to come into the squad and up the tempo. Alcaraz, O’Brien and Ndiaye have all shown that good players can be picked up cheaply with good scouting and our manager knows a good player when he sees one. Recruitment will be interesting. I was disappointed that there was no “big name” to provide the musical farewell sfter the match but, as someone pointed out, this day was all about the supporters and I think on reflection the club got it spot on. As for the supporters – how good were we?? No pitch invasion, everyone listened in silence to the violinist, and behaviour was impeccable. These are true supporters and not the poisonous individuals who post threats on line to players' wives and children. I didn’t hear or see one bad word on Sunday and the day was a huge success for the club in how it handled the day. The police who were good humoured, the Southampton fans who stayed behind to enjoy the festivities, the former players (god bless every one of them). But most of all, it was a success for us, the supporters, who have stuck with the club through some dreadful times but have refused to turn their backs with the “I’m done with the club now” brigade and have played such a huge part in securing our status and future. What a great day. Goodbye, old friend… I will miss you!! Reader Comments (11) Note: the following content is not moderated or vetted by the site owners at the time of submission. When proof-reading, I wasn't sure where you described the kind benefactor as "- Trevo, Mayor -" … thinking that he was perhaps the Mayor of Trevo, some village in Tuscany? Hopefully I got it right as Trevor Mayor but if not, let me know. Danny O'Neill 2 Posted 21/05/2025 at 12:55:27 Totally sums it up, Dave, and good to see you.I may put the miles in, but you West Country Blues pale me into significance.Atmosphere was electric and full of emotion from the heart. That will live in the minds of those young supporters forever. The violinist had most around me in tears. I had hay fever again so my eyes were watering. There She Goes has to become a feature. It was fantastic. And I liked the Bill Ryder-Jones band rendition of Spirit Of The Blues. As I've said elsewhere, that version and that footage from Sunday should be our cup final song next season.Made up you and the boys had a great day out. Who couldn't!If you are not in Newcastle on Sunday, which is a massive ask for you geographically, we'll meet you next season. Danny O'Neill 3 Posted 21/05/2025 at 13:05:33 Missed the edit **insignificance Tony Abrahams 4 Posted 21/05/2025 at 13:30:42 A nice report Dave, and once again incredible commitment from you West Country blues👏👏The support on Sunday, definitely came from the heart and from the soul Danny, but I think the hay fever came from all our memories and the realisation that we wont be going back to Goodison Pk, anymore. The passion the Evertonians have for their club, shone right through everywhere you went on Sunday, and it reminded me of the first day I realised how special our club is because of the fans, when seven was the number and it had been seven long years. The wait now has become an incredible and very long thirty years but, you wouldnt have thought so on Sunday, because Goodison got an ending that was fit for both Kings and Queens💙💙 Liam Mogan 5 Posted 21/05/2025 at 13:45:20 Lovely report Dave. It was a great day.Personally I was made up it was Bill Ryder-Jones at the end. He's a massive Blue and a consumate musician and producer. His solo albums are uniformly excellent and his recent production of Mick Heads albums outstanding.I'd encourage anyone to listen to his stuff, which displays a humanity and sophistication that is rare. Rather him than some major label artist with tenous links to our club. Ernie Baywood 6 Posted 21/05/2025 at 13:49:46 I can see There She Goes becoming something of an anthem. And somewhere down the line people will tell the story of how it happened. And to be honest, how cool is it? Not even a football related song, but by a brilliant blue, and organically adopted. Stephen Vincent 7 Posted 21/05/2025 at 13:51:29 Great write up Dave it was great to meet up, if only briefly. Your Everton journey and mine have so much in common, except I never had any desire to be 'smashed to bits by self-styled hard men wielding heavy wooden sticks'.I have the utmost admiration for you guys and the journey you make on a regular basis. Totally agree with you and Danny that 'There She Goes' is now an essential tune for the pre match play list, the rendition on Sunday made the hairs on my arms stand on end as only Z-Cars has done in the past. I can't stop watching on You Tube.See you next season Dave, hope the new coach park is close. As an aside John Snr. really needs support at the moment, if possible could we arrange a get together for him?A few of us hit the Crown on Lime Street post game and with a fair few other Toffees, notably the Kansas City Blues, went through the whole Everton back catalogue including a fabulous full team singing of 'Everton Oh we love Everton'.That sing-a-long together with the parade of former players parade has made me think about my Grandad who used to tell me that the very first song he ever heard at a football match was sung by Everton fans just after World War Two. Perhaps Dave Abrahams remembers and can finish the lyrics.Bless em all, Bless em all,The full backs the half backs and all,Bless all the forwards, the goalkeepers too,Bless all the boys who are wearing the Blue. Mark Murphy 8 Posted 21/05/2025 at 13:58:08 “being smashed to bits by self-styled hard men wielding heavy wooden sticks.”You mean Blackbeard??Great to meet you Dave and massive applause for your long distance support of the Blues.Hope to see you next season in the “new Harlech” wherever that may be.UTFT Dave Williams 9 Posted 21/05/2025 at 14:42:01 Michael# 1- sorry I was unclear. The reference is to my uncle Trevor Jones who was the leader of Liverpool City Council for many years and his wife/ my Aunt who was Lord Mayor of Liverpool twice. Dave Abrahams 10 Posted 21/05/2025 at 15:10:04 Ive wrote a few times, Dave, how much I admire you and your fellow Blues who travel to all Evertons games and each one is an away game for you brilliant fans.I thought the day was a great example of how much we fans, from near and far, love Everton football club and the singing before the game was the highlight of the day for me with the whole ground in communion singing together, very, very moving for me and hard to hold the tears back and although I dont like a lot of fuss I nearly shed a few myself.Stephen (7) That verse rings a bell but I dont remember if I heard it sang at Everton matches. Danny O'Neill 11 Posted 21/05/2025 at 15:18:22 Ernie, it would be unique. That's what I'm liking about most of what Everton supporters sing now. It's Everton and no-one can imitate it like that Allez, Allez that the dark side started and now several others' supporters sing.I can just hear There She Goes resonating on the concourses and in the ground, especially at the away matches. It will confuse the hell out of the opposition supporters. But it's Everton.Who can replicate Spirit? Who can replicate Forever? Who can replicate Marching? No-one. It's uniquely Everton.Stephen, let's set a date sooner rather than later. If you don't have my details. 0796 600 7546. dannyefc26@gmail.comJohn is a very special Evertonian, who schools me every time I talk to him. I will travel post season. Let's make it a location of his choosing that is good for him. And his grandson Josh will be there too.Anyone else, feel free to contact me personally, I've put these up before.
