Season › 2024-25 › News Wolves vs Everton, Carabao Cup: Preview and Predicted Lineups Anjishnu Roy 22/09/2025 37comments | Jump to last Everton make their return to cup action and will face Wolves once again on their trip to Molineux for the third round of the EFL Cup this Tuesday. The Blues will be looking to bounce back from their 2-1 defeat to Liverpool in the Anfield derby and are taking on a Wolves side in free-fall. Vitor Pereira’s side have lost all five of their Premier League games this season and Everton will be looking to contribute to that crisis by securing their second win over the hosts already this season. The two sides faced each other at Molineux just before the international break with David Moyes’s side securing a 3-2 triumph. The trio of Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Iliman Ndiaye, Jack Grealish was at its mercurial best in that display, but unforced errors at the back from the Toffees allowed the scoreline to be more flattering for Wolves. Everton beat League One side Mansfield Town 2-0 in the previous round of the cup competition, thanks to goals from Charly Alcaraz and Beto. Meanwhile, Wolves got the better of West Ham 3-2 with Jorgen Strand Larsen scoring twice in the dying minutes to secure a comeback victory. Wolves vs Everton - Team News and Predicted Starting XI Everton Team News David Moyes might be tempted to make a series of changes to his starting XI for this game, allowing some rest to those who have played week in and week out so far. The season is going to be long, and rotations while maintaining a competitive balance will be key. Mark Travers is expected to be the cup keeper and will take his place in between the sticks while captain Seamus Coleman, who was impressive in the previous cup game against Mansfield Town, is likely to replace Jake O’Brien. James Garner could slot into the middle with Tim Iroegbunam, and 19-year-old Tyler Dibling, signed from Southampton this summer, is expected to make his first start for his new club on the right wing. Either Iliman Ndiaye or Jack Grealish would probably take up the left flank and Thierno Barry should start ahead of Beto in this fixture. Everton’s predicted starting XI: Mark Travers (GK), Seamus Coleman, James Tarkowski, Michael Keane, Vitalii Mykolenko, Tim Iroegbunam, James Garner, Tyler Dibling, Charly Alcaraz, Iliman Ndiaye, Thierno Barry When is Wolves vs Everton? Disclaimer () Mike Powell 1 Posted 22/09/2025 at 18:18:30 I expect some of the squad players to play, the likes of Aznou, Dibling, Alacarz, Barry, Coleman, McNeil and Iroegbunam.I think they will all get a run out. Bobby Mallon 2 Posted 22/09/2025 at 19:20:25 Barry needs a run out. Bill Hawker 3 Posted 22/09/2025 at 19:36:19 Finally, we have a bench and depth that we can be hopeful with. Still more work to go in that area (right and left back anyone?) but hopefully gone are the days where players have to play every match because we don't have players that can come in and do the business.I'm looking forward to seeing Barry, Dibling, and Alcaraz as well as McNeil. Shaun Parker 4 Posted 22/09/2025 at 19:45:02 I think McNeil should start more. He was one of our best players last season and can score goals. Hes been unlucky not to get any game time. Mike Gaynes 5 Posted 22/09/2025 at 19:58:25 Slightly different lineup for me. I predict McNeil starts instead of Ndiaye, who has had a bit of a niggle, and Röhl starts ahead of Garner, who hasn't had a minute's rest this season. And if Mykolenko isn't fully healed, expect young Aznou. Liam Mogan 6 Posted 22/09/2025 at 20:15:57 I think we may see a near full-strength team tomorrow, with only the odd change. We played early Saturday and don't play again until next Monday. Unless someone is carrying a knock, no real need for rotation. James Tarkowski spoke yesterday about prioritsing the cups this season, and Moyes must realise he only has a season or 2 left to add some silverware to his record. Oliver Molloy 7 Posted 22/09/2025 at 20:39:41 We need to show up and win to get us going again -- but, given their disastrous start to the season, Wolves also badly need a win...Let's hope it doesn't happen against us! Kevin Molloy 8 Posted 22/09/2025 at 21:21:53 Wolves put their reserves out last time, I can't imagine they are suddenly going to care about the Milk Cup. I'm of the same opinion. Robert Tressell 9 Posted 22/09/2025 at 21:27:08 I care very much about this game. This tournament is possibly our best chance of doing something meaningful this season. Forget resting players -- we're not in a relegation fight. Take it seriously, please, Everton. You can blood fringe players in Premier League games. Rob Halligan 10 Posted 22/09/2025 at 21:54:07 Robert, me and 3,000 other Blues fans travelling to Wolves tomorrow night also care very much about this game. All this talk about resting players for fear of getting injured is, quite honestly, laughable. Players can just as easily get injured in league games or even on the training field, which has already happened to one or two of ours this season. As I always say, start your strongest possible team, get a healthy lead, then make substitutions. 2-0 will probably make a healthy lead tomorrow night, maybe even before half-time. Wolves have one heck of a tough game this weekend, away at Spurs on Saturday evening, so they are far more likely to rest some players than we are. If Moyes played a strong team against Mansfield in the last round, then I certainly can't see him playing a so-called weaker team tomorrow night. A comfortable 3-0 win for the Blues! Mike Oates 11 Posted 23/09/2025 at 00:42:51 I think he'll go with a maximum of 4 changes to the side on Saturday. He will need to rest Mykolenko, who's played whilst not 100% fit in the last few matches. I think we'll see Garner revert to full back as young Aznou is clearly not ready for the Premier League yet.If fit, he'll put Röhl in midfield with Gueye; if he isn't fit, then Tim Iroegbunam will be given another game. He'll want to give Alcaraz and Dibling try-outs, probably at the expense of Ndiaye and Dewsbury-Hall. Barry will retain his place after Beto's poor showing. I'm not sure that McNeil is in Moyes's plans at all; to me, he's been one of our star players for the past few seasons but Grealish, Dewsbury-Hall, Ndiaye and our £40M Dibling are in front of him in the pecking order. PickfordO'Brien, Tarkowski, Keane, Garner Gueye, RöhlDibling, Alcaraz, Grealish Barry Andrew Merrick 12 Posted 23/09/2025 at 07:45:07 Bill 3, two pacy young wing-backs could transform us, we have struggled in transition for a long time, which has frustrated many. Mike G pointed out how fast Liverpool where, and they ripped us open. One day we will have a squad that can play that way.I think tonight we will see a mix of first picks and some squad rotation, with a strong bench. Dave Abrahams 13 Posted 23/09/2025 at 10:03:05 Id go with Robert @(9) and Rob @(10) play the strongest team, a cup could get this club moving quicker than a finish higher up the table, although both would be nice.Wolves should be more interested in their league position, its in a poor position even at this early stage in the season and their fans dont seem bothered about this game——only 18,000 sold at the moment including Evertons allocation, a chance there for any Everton fans close to Wolverhampton to join the support for Everton.COYFB! Brian Harrison 14 Posted 23/09/2025 at 10:20:18 The stats show for the last 10 seasons the winners of the Carabao Cup have also finished in a Champions league spot in the league. So the cup competitions are just as difficult to win as gaining European football. The top clubs have the strongest squads so can alternate their teams from week to week and that's why the teams in the bottom half of the league haven't that luxury as any changes to those clubs first 11 usually sees a noticeable drop in performance. We for the first time in a long time seem to be building a squad that can be rotated in certain areas, but it will take more than 1 window and a lot more money before we can compete with the very top clubs. Jerome Shields 15 Posted 23/09/2025 at 10:26:45 Dave#13Moyes knows he hasn't the squad to do both.He did not even look at building a squad to do both.Moyes priority will be the Premier League position. The odd good Cup night has merit in that it will built-up Bramley Dock. The last Manager that did as you suggest was Dyche. It all went great till January, then Everton went on a poor league run, where dumped out of all the Cup competitions.Expecting a sustained effort in the new year at Finch Farm is a big ask.Dyches improved individual player stats went to pot, showing in the attitude on the pitch during that poor spell.I still see the exasperation on Dyches face. The only possiblity is that we get early benefits from the TFG Strategic Plan in Management and Structure, but hopefully in the next two years this situation will change. I am all for a good Cup night. Hope we beat Wolves.Hope we go as far as possible.Hope the new dawn comes. We might see more of our young recruits. At last there is a Strategic plan and though in it's infancy at least it is started. Steve Brown 16 Posted 23/09/2025 at 12:03:42 Agree 100% with Robert, Rob and Dave A.Field our strongest side and go for the win. A Cup win would transform this club and the EFL cup is absolutely our best opportunity this season. Sam Hoare 17 Posted 23/09/2025 at 12:13:40 I get the calls for the strongest team and I expect that Moyes will do something like that but I also think that our success this season will depend upon some of our younger fringe players developing more and turning out some high quality performances. They need some game time to do this and preferably some starts. Equally some of the first team are carrying knocks or would benefit from a rest. Therefore I'd risk it for a biscuit and play something like this:PickfordO'Brien Tarkowski Keane AznouDibling Gana Röhl McNeilAlcarazBarryDecent mix there of youth and experience, first team and second team. That lineup should be able to get at Wolves though I wouldn't be surprised to see Moyes name the same XI as for the derby. Tom Bowers 18 Posted 23/09/2025 at 12:43:14 We all have different opinions on what the strongest starting eleven is as does Moyes. We haven't seen enough of some of the newcomers yet to have a positive opinion on them but I suppose Moyes has assessed them in training games. The lads starting so far have all played well despite 2 losses so it's hard to leave them out. However, this is the Mickey Mouse cup and the Prem. is most important so Moyes has an opportunity to give a start to the new guys. Wolves will be a tougher team now and will be out for some revenge especially as they are at home. Robert Tressell 19 Posted 23/09/2025 at 12:49:56 Winning a cup would be brilliant.Prioritising the league and finishing 9th instead of 11th feels a bit pointless. I can see calls for fresh faces but Ndiaye and Grealish should start if fit. Ian Bennett 20 Posted 23/09/2025 at 12:53:14 Get it won in 90. If you've a strong team out, then the only risk is the lottery of penalties.Pickford on the bench, just in case. Jimmy Carr 21 Posted 23/09/2025 at 13:16:31 Moyes can still prioritize the cup and make some changes. Getting Alcaraz, Dibling, McNeil and maybe even Aznou into the starting line-up gives them all game time that will only help later on in the season when they'll be needed for the Premier League. Keeping the other four of the back five that started on Saturday offers security and a good chance of winning the game. They would be my changes, leave some of our big hitters on the bench for this one; if it's going tits up, bring them on. I know some people don't like that approach but we need to rotate a bit when we can. Tonight is a good opportunity. Alan J Thompson 22 Posted 23/09/2025 at 14:04:50 I'd like to see both Beto and Barry up front, McNeil wide left and either Grealish or Dibling wide right, Alcaraz and Rohl if fit Gana if not or one of the 2 wide right possibilities, Coleman and Aznou as full backs with 2 from Tarkowski, O'Brien and Keane and one from the obvious 2 in goal. Throw caution to the wind which should throw any Wolves expectation out the window. Will Mr Moyes go with it? About as much chance as 3 untried youngsters getting a start. As a matter of interest, does anyone know of the financial benefit/prize money from this competition other than winning it and qualifying for some sort of European competition and a share of gate receipts? Jack Convery 23 Posted 23/09/2025 at 15:06:30 No need to rest players, as we don't play again until Monday night. Dibling for Ndiaye and Barry for Beto would be my only changes. If Mykolenko is not match ready, maybe play Seamus there. Start strong and then give the likes of McNeil, Anzou, Röhl etc a run out. Wolves won't give a fig about this game. The Premier League is the be-all and end-all for them right now. Raymond Fox 24 Posted 23/09/2025 at 15:15:04 It's even difficult to predict what team Wolves will field.I don't think we are strong enough to finish top 8 in the league so the cups are the only chance for some glory for me.My best guess is Moyes will play almost our best team tonight. James Marshall 25 Posted 23/09/2025 at 15:28:02 If Moyes picks our strongest team and we win, everyone will say he picked the right team. If he picks the second string and we win, everyone will say he picked the right team. The opposite is also true which renders this a pointless debate. Mike Gaynes 26 Posted 23/09/2025 at 15:43:13 Alan J, if I'm counting correctly that's 12 players, which would definitely be throwing caution to the wind. Kieran Kinsella 27 Posted 23/09/2025 at 16:13:08 Tarkowski must be in line for brain of Britain with his observation that Palace and Newcastle won cups last year as they made an effort to do so instead of assuming the big 6 would win. What a novel idea? Trying. Jeff Armstrong 28 Posted 23/09/2025 at 16:31:21 I'd have Pickford in goal for this competition. Imagine if we get deep into this competition and he still picks Travers, how unfair would that be on Pickford if he misses out on semis and even finals for this club after his Premier League performances over the last few years... travesty wouldn't cover it.#It would also be unfair on Travers to be dropped for the later stages, if we even get that far, of course. Alan J Thompson 29 Posted 23/09/2025 at 16:38:30 Mike(#26); Sorry, Mike, it may be how I've laid it out, for clarity;GK: Pickford or TraversRB: ColemanLB: AznouCB: 2 from Tarkowski, O'Brien, KeaneMF:McNeil, Alcaraz, + 2 from Rohl, Gana, Grealish, Dibling.(preference Rohl +1 right winger)CF: Beto, Barry. Liam Mogan 30 Posted 23/09/2025 at 16:54:27 Play Pickford. We don't play again until next Monday. No need to rotate keepers. Only makes sense if in Europe and go deep in all competitions. Andy Meighan 31 Posted 23/09/2025 at 16:54:31 Wolves will undoubtedly make changes like ourselves, but I don't think it'll be the walkover some are predicting. I'm expecting a tight game and us to scrape it.Obviously I'd like to see us wallop them but I can't see it.Also, I believe Wolves have only sold 15,000 tickets, absolutely shocking and to think they beat a Premier League team in the last round, shocking support. Jay Harris 32 Posted 23/09/2025 at 17:01:04 Wolves are very physical so we need some brute force in the side.I would like to see Alcaraz and Dibling given a runout and Röhl if he is fit but we have to guard against too many changes as it will affect our rhythm. Frank McGregor 33 Posted 23/09/2025 at 17:22:57 Need a win today to boost confidence, that should be the only criteria for team selection.A bit off subject reading about the current situation in England makes me feel disappointed for the people who sacrificed in world wars for freedom and peace.Sounds like I will need a lawyer with me next time I visit family. Frederick Parchment 34 Posted 23/09/2025 at 17:28:54 So, who won? When is Wolves vs Everton?Everton will take on Wolves in the third round of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday, 23 September 2025. Kick-off is scheduled at 7:45 pm local time. Jake FitzGerald 35 Posted 23/09/2025 at 17:31:42 I'd definitely like to see Röhl play from the start. When Gueye was pulled in the last Wolves game, they ran through us; it would be good to see if Merlin can do a bit of mopping up. Nick Riddle 36 Posted 23/09/2025 at 18:21:52 Blimey, Frank (@33), what have you read? What are you planning for your next visit that makes you think you'll need to bring a lawyer with you?
