Our problem really comes down to the DNA of Everton FC

by   |   22/04/2026  24 Comments  [Jump to last]

On some of the recent threads, people are talking about us getting a more expansive manager in...

Trouble is,, you could see the Brighton or Bournemouth managers turning up at Everton and us still playing to the same blueprint.

I think it's not really the manager but something within the DNA of our club that dictates to whoever arrives that we must play with one big gangly centre-forward and never sign quick fast direct wide players or full-backs.

Think about it really, since Moyes left in 2013 until he was reappointed last year, there was only Roberto Martinez who dared the club to believe, yet the fans were having none of his abandonment of defending and wanted him gone at a time when the big money had just come with Moshiri.

Fans of this club were besides themselves with excitement when Martinez walked through the door telling them we will play ‘sin miedo’.

Martinez was not ran out of town for the wonderful attacking football for his team played in his first season. It was for the over-complicated, possession obsession he seemed to develop during his second one. His baffling interviews didn't help.

Show me someone who thinks Evertonians want to see their team play with fear and I will show you one who doesn’t go near a game...

Or somebody trying to excuse the cowardice Moyes regularly displays in his relentless pursuit of respectability.

* and shit transfers.

The standards of McCarthy, Lukaku, Deulofeu, Barry, were unfortunately not maintained.

Niasse, Robles, Alcaraz, Funes Mori, McGeady, Tarashaj, Lennon, Besic, Kone, were all a poor set of players that were destined to see the team be less competitive than before he arrived.

One of the articles on ToffeeWeb had Martinez as the emperor with no clothes. Well he couldnt defend for shit, and his transfer record bar those 4 was ugly. Certainly those 9 would get thrashed most weeks.

Funny really. Martinez, who was very heavily criticised for leaving things to the "recruitment team" while he swanned off to do a bit of moonlighting as a TV pundit for the world cup gets criticised for "his" signings.

While Moyes has admitted he was responsibe ALL signings, gets exonerated by his disciples who like to blame a "recruitment team" that hadnt been assembled yet.

Are there no lengths to which they wont go ?

170M and the guy who makes a point of saying he has final say on ALL signings has nothing to do with it.

I miss Martinez's first year and the Give me Sunshine video.

72 points Roberto Martinez got us. A total David can only dream of.

Moyes has nowhere near that total in 12 years of trying.

I think Jim in his original post may have meant something other than “abandonment for defending“ and it’s the Edit button which is still causing a problem on some phones.

I've changed to “abandonment of defending” and moved the off-topic posts to this new Mailbag thread.

I think Eric said his Samsung was an issue. I’m going to check out my iPhone….

Well, it seems to work okay with my iPhone, even though the Edit button sits on top of the text… not ideal.

I hope the owners are seriously considering a change of manager at Everton. While Moyes has done extremely well to bring Everton up to this position (10th as on today), the damaging result over the weekend, and subsequent wins by Brighton, Bournemouth and Brentford have seen them leap-frog us in the table. While Moyes is a good steady hand, I don't think he will take us much forward in the present modern age of football. He should be thanked and given a good send-off, but time to move on. Somebody on another thread had listed down 15 trophy-winning managers who will become available in the summer. Keep sentiments aside and make decisions that take the club forward. Like Bournemouth did a couple of seasons ago, when they sacked Gary O'Neil who had dragged them away from the doors of relegation. They ruthlessly replaced him with Iraola, and they have reaped the benefits of that stone cold decision. Do TFG have it in them to take the club forward?

I guess reading the experts on T/W all the problems are because of our ultra defensive manager and his negative approach. He spent a fortune on bums he doesn't play and with our fantastic array of talent he may even achieve the impossible and finish outside the top ten

I just hope they make the change before the end of the season so the new manager can asses this brilliant group of players who successive managers have made into relegation candidates. Also we want fast attacking football sprinkled with a bit of the old school of science.

Jeez, Jim... Something in our DNA is there?

Well there wasn't prior to 2002. We were known as the School of Science before that. Always played open attractive football.

What happened in 2002 to change our character???

A lot to ask for, Brian.

All would be possibly okay but David would have to lose the con miedo approach.

Ian,

If you thought Aaron Lennon wasn't competitive, then you were very hard to please. I wish he had been playing on Sunday alongside a few more players with his work rate and ability. I think there might have been a different result.

Don't you think he would have been an ever-present under Moyes?

John,

That 72 points was built on the back of Moyes's team. Very good defensively.

Once Martinez broke that up, it went to pot.

"Relentless pursuit of respectability" -- What a very apt and very short statement, Darren.

Don't you understand anything, don't you realise we have been fighting relegation for years?

What did Joe Royle say again to the assembled media, after we beat Spurs!

That 72 points was built on the back of Moyes's team.

Utter nonsense.

Martinez's signings of McCarthy, Barry and the brilliant Lukaku upfront made the difference, we were toothless upfront under Moyes.

Paul,

How do you build an out-and-out attacking team, that scored more goals in a season than Moyes has ever achieved, on the back of defensive football?

In 6 weeks?

I don't know anyone who wants Moyes out, except on this site, but nothing is going to change your minds. Get used to it because he will be here next season.

I've just read Moyes, talking about how he had fell out with Alex Ferguson because, after Everton drew with Man Utd 4-4, Ferguson told him he should have got his team to work that hard against Liverpool at Wembley the week before.

Moyes himself says he thought we had a better team than Liverpool -- let's not go on about the half-time team talk when we had Liverpool exactly were we wanted them -- and another chance was gone.

He says a lot of clubs had come in for him during his 11 years at Everton, but at the back of his mind, he always used to think he didn't want to outstay his welcome.

Tony,

I live in Liverpool, but what's that got to do with it?

Anyway this is the last time I will mention Moyes till the end of season. Let's go and beat the Hammers on Saturday. COYBs

Mike,

I'm guessing Tony thought you lived outside the city when you posted "I don't know anyone who wants Moyes out".

I live in the city. All of my Everton mates want him gone.

Jim,

If we have the “one big gangly centre-forward” brought on this Saturday or any day for that matter, I’ll just give up. What is the point?

Does Moyes think he’s going to suddenly turn into a prolific goalscorer? I’d rather see one of the young lads from the U21s given a game... at least they’d put in an effort.

Tony Abrahams

What it has got to do with it Mike, is that I have heard quite a few people who don’t go on this website tell me we need to move away from having David Moyes, as our manager.

I was in town this morning and out of the six Evertonians, I spoke to, three of them told me they don’t like Moyes, and I hear the same thing from quite a lot of match going Evertonians.

I am very surprised to hear that someone who lives in Liverpool, never speaks to anyone who doesn’t want to keep Moyes, Mike, and this is why I asked you mate, because I hear it all the time.
