After corporate and managerial silence from the seat of power at Everton FC for much of the summer, Giulia Bould has secured an interview with Everton CEO Angus Kinnear.

Right-back is the first topic Giulia delves into and Kinnear says there will be a new right-back by the end of the window, reflecting the concerns of Prime Minister Andy Burnham!

However, Kinnear confirmed that Everton will start the campaign without a specialist addition on the right side of defence, admitting a deal will not be completed in time for Saturday's kickoff. Despite the delay, the CEO was adamant that the club remains determined to land their top target before the transfer window closes at the end of the month.

"We won't have a right-back for Palace, but it's important we have the number one right-back we wanted when the window closes," Kinnear told BBC Radio Merseyside.

"I don't think we are in a bad position on that. The players we thought we had the option of are still available for us... I understand the fans' frustrations; I understand how they see it as being critical. Even the Prime Minister [referencing Andy Burnham's high-profile comments] chipped in to give us some helpful direction! So it's reached a level of national debate."

Beyond the right-back dilemma, Kinnear covered several key operational and sporting matters as the club prepares for its debut season at the new Hill Dickinson Stadium:

  • The Friedkin Group's Expectations: Kinnear revealed that owners TFG regarded failing to qualify for Europe last season as a "failure," making clear that expectations under David Moyes remain demanding despite recent transitions.

  • Jack Grealish: Addressing rumors of a return following his loan spell last term, Kinnear acknowledged Grealish's impact but stressed that any potential deal hinges strictly on financial viability alongside the club's wider recruitment priorities.

  • Iliman Ndiaye: Following reports of interest from abroad and rejected contract extensions, Kinnear reiterated the club's strong desire to retain the attacker, while acknowledging the complex landscape of late-window interest.

With Moyes forced to rely on interim options such as Jake O'Brien or James Garner at right-back against Palace, Evertonians will be watching closely to see if Kinnear's insistence on holding out for their primary target ultimately pays off before deadline day.

BBC Sport reporting Kinnear told Radio Merseyside missing out on Europe last year was regarded as a failure by the Freidkins.

Well, why didn't they do something about the manager, for fuck's sake!!

Words fail me with this club. A couple of days before the opener and we get this, like we haven't been saying this since last Christmas... I fuckin' despair!

Kinnear interviewed on Radio Merseyside by Giulia Bould...

I can't be arsed reading it, to be honest... but no right-back in before Saturday -- what a shock!!

Why didn't the Freidkins invest in January then to give us a boost in the run in to the end of the season to push for Europe? Speculate to accumulate?

But some on here were telling us back in January to wait for the summer and watch the owners go, well we were still watching.

And if it was deemed a failure, then with most clubs the buck stops with the manager...why haven't they done anything about that?

Plenty of questions but no answers.

Just listened to Kinnear being interviewed by Giulia Bould of the BBC. I have been critical of both Kinnear and the TFG. But to be fair the interview is 29 minutes and Kinnear doesn't dodge any of her questions.

I have to say after listening to the interview I feel a lot more confident than I did prior to the interview. Now maybe Kinnear is a bluff merchant and time will tell but his answers were open and honest.

Obviously first question was why no right back signed, he said sometimes deals cant be done for the first game of the season but was very confident that we will have a right back before the window closes, I just wonder if they have an agreement with Palace over Munoz but they don't want him to play against them on Saturday.

Kinnear said when he took over as CEO Everton were in the bottom 3rd of revenue created in the Premier League; he now reckons we are in the top 3rd. I won't cover all the questions he answered but he said that the Friedkins want all the money raised by the different events at Hill Dickinson to go towards strengthening the team.

He was asked about how did the Friedkins assess last season and he said as a failure as we didn't qualify for Europe or win a trophy.

The moment Jarrad Branthwaite got injured, the wheels came off. I'm pretty sure Moyes knew that would happen, and asked for extra reinforcements, which were denied.

And I expect he will make that clear over the next few days, as Angus is putting the whole blame on him here. He was also denied the use of Gana in the last few games cos they didn't want to renew his contract.

If you break it down, what he's stating is his opinion mixed with speculation. Seems more a response to Moyes's comments yesterday rather than his committing to making more signings before the window closes.

Everton CEO Angus Kinnear is confident... but admits...

Kinnear admitted that... and that David Moyes will have to cope without...

"I don't think we are in a bad position...
I don't think they will be there for Crystal Palace..."

“I'm confident that..."

“We were trying to do last summer..."

“So a right-back was top priority... we would have liked..."

“I understand the fans' frustrations..."

“So we are working hard... I'm sure it will be an improvement...”

Oh dear, Brian, your favourite bugbear addressed and dismissed in no uncertain terms:

"We don't have a model that some other clubs have employed where the manager just doesn't get a say. and you jest send the picked players lout on to the grass and he has to coach whoever's picked. It is a collaboration.

"We believe in the fact that the manager should believe in the players that we sign and want to make them part of the team, believe that they can have the right fit in the dressing room, the right character, the right technical skills to work within the structure and the tactical approach that he takes.

"So the recruitment team, the data team work hand in glove ot come up with the right solution."

Tell us again about Dibling?

So far then, Angus, you've given us Johnson, an injured Norgaard, and Hackney -- not counting Rohl and George as they were part of the squad last season.

The season starts in 5 days, would you say you've failed in this transfer window, Angus?

Moyes has been a failure for the vast majority of his managerial career and all of his Everton career with regards trophies.

Why the fuck didn't they sack the failure if all he did was deliver failure?

On the TFG, and them perceiving last year as failure, he did say there had been "appropriate pressure " from TFG.
I'm hoping it's a case of last chance Davie!

The target was European football all along, even though Moyes wouldn't speak of it all season.

There's no hiding now for Moyes, there's no saying we're just happy to be away from the bottom 3.
Neil Lawson
12 Posted 18/08/2026 at 15:51:29
Finances are limited. The budget is tight. Hence, it makes sense to announce to the world what our number one target is ( hardly a secret) and by doing so, guarantee that the asking price for any respectable right back, becomes appropriately inflated to the point where we wont pay it.
Its pathetic. Kinnear is pathetic.
Andrew Merrick

Soundbites... financial viability alongside the club's wider recruitment priorities...

...acknowledging the complex landscape of late-window interest...

So he did answer questions, but the answers seem prepared.

TFG regarding no cup or European football as failure, but this comment delivered second hand to the fan base and no reactive response.

It remains to be seen what counts as profit, and how much actually goes into the squad rebuild. I understand that a club will not show its hand to all and sundry, bad for business, but how bad is it sitting on your hands when reactive measures are called for?

Today is Tuesday, and our CEO says we won't have a fullback in for the Palace game, so no negotiations with anyone over the next four days for a fullback? If that's not total incompetence, and waiting for the last week of the window yet again by our new owners, unbelievable.

Johnson, Norgaard, Hackney, Rohl and George all excellent acquisitions and at the right price, all bar one at the right age too, but theres no pleasing some folks.
So where being choosy about the right back spot and why not, we need quality and it appears Everton know who they want, lets see whether its worth the wait, I am certainly more convinced now that its going to get sorted although many will disagree.
The fact that the Manager says we need an awful lot more work, it sounds to me that there maybe several more faces arriving rather than one or two.
TFG do not like failure and I like this stance. Hopefully then they will back the Manager in the market, if so Moyes will have no excuses other than to deliver European football which I think he will.
With that, he may well get a contract extension as a reward ? I can hear the groans on this site already.

Sounds like all the bogus stories of us bidding for this RB or that RB are all just bollocks.
Sounds like they have a couple they'd be happy with and they are still available.

They are as I expected gambling that waiting will get them their targets at a better price.
We also have no loans in yet, which I'd expect us to fully use.

I'm impatient like others ( not as much as some ) but let's just see at the end of the window what we've got or haven't!!

Darren Hind

Ian Bennett

Joe, I think Seamus is longer than that to be honest.

Could be wrong, but since Gary Stevens was sold in 1988, I think weve spent more than £1m on a right back only three times in the following 38 years. Patterson, Neville and Barrett.

It is a long neglected position, and no surprise that the sillverware has dried up since.

Ian what season? 2025/6? That looks implausibly high. Do you have a source?
Mark Taylor
24 Posted 18/08/2026 at 19:02:51
Did he really say we are now on top third of revenue earners in the PL? That would require us to displace Villa on about £400m and given we don't have their SCR problems of being in Europe, we sure aren't behaving like the 6th richest club in the league.

A more realistic goal/achievement would be getting into the top half of revenue earners, out of the bottom half, but even then, there is a big gap between 7/8 and the two below. At best we might compete for 9th. 2026/7 revenue is not likely to be much more than £250m as far as I can see.
Ian Bennett
25 Posted 18/08/2026 at 19:14:59
He said we were 8th on revenue on toffeetv, an increase from the bottom third when at Goodison.

Source - toffeetv interview on YouTube with Angus K

To be fair, he talks well on it.
Mark Taylor
26 Posted 18/08/2026 at 19:26:04
Ian, 8th would not be top third which apparently he said and would require us to replace Newcastle who are projected to do £350m plus this coming season. I don't think we are even close to that number, not yet. If we are then believe me, we would have a very large amount of SCR headroom, enough to buy £80m players, not £20m ones.
Ian Bennett
27 Posted 18/08/2026 at 19:34:51
Think you need to remove the champions league money out of Newcastle, and presumably any knock on gate revenue and sponsor bonuses. Id inagine Adidas etc would be paying extra when they are in champions league.

Id inagine their revenue was down on the premier league too

Newcastle revenue will be down from prior year, and presumably that has contributed to player sales.

So we all would likely wish to know what are projections are and what transfer room we have available. I asked AI. One thing I'f found out with AI is how entirely wrong it can be. Far from being infallible, unless you have some knowledge yourself and can question its findings, it can give you garbage. See the link below for the full exchange but the last part for what it's revised budget is for transfers under SCR. Must admit, it surprised me, so maybe it's still garbage

Ian 27. That was an AI calculated projection which presumably factors in those things though to be fair- see above post- I have a very low confidence in AI. But the estimate of £250-275m revenue for us in 2026/7 doesn't look implausible.
Ian Bennett
31 Posted 18/08/2026 at 19:56:07
£265m is a good £15m more than most of us had turnover, and that despite a 13th finish.

New sponsor through the door, and hopefully higher league finishes, it will be near £300m.
Tony Hughes

Three additions to a squad that was short on numbers last season.
Rohl and George were here last season and part of last seasons squad.
Coleman, Grealish, Gana and McNeill gone.
Tarkowski and Keane another year slower.
No improvement in the striker positions and no rightback.
No one knows how many games Branthwaite will play this season so in reality we should be looking for another centre half as well for cover if O'Brien is going to be the starting rightback.
Not sure how this can be perceived as a good transfer window
Ian Wilkins

Why did the majority of the PL vote to continue with PSR in the form of SCR when it just clearly self-perpetuates the Top 6?

Why not create something a bit fairer?
Josh Horne
34 Posted 18/08/2026 at 20:02:28
Did our net spend last year entitle the owners to consider anything less than European qualification a failure?

Not having a right back that the manager was prepared to play for an entire season laid the foundations for that failure, but here we are again heading into a new season in the same position.

We've players that need to be moved on if that is key to adding the depth sorely needed in both full back positions, but Moyes and the recruitment team are not on the same page.

Alcaraz, a total waste of budget last year, is now even less likely to play this season. Then there is Iroegbunam, a player that we scuppered our own intention of selling by playing him in in pre season friendlies.

Ian 31

I appreciate we don't have official numbers for the past season but can I ask where you got your £265m from? It seems a little high to me.

Last season will already include the HD sponsorship at £8-10m a year. Was there another very large one due to show in next year, which we haven't seen the full benefit from?

I imagine the biggest revenue growth next year- and I don't think it will be a game changer- would be non football events. We had very little last year but at least we put ourselves on the map.

My very rough guess is £250 2025/6(maybe a little less) and £275, for the coming season, the majority from non football stadium revenue.
Mike Gaynes
37 Posted 18/08/2026 at 20:12:25
£265m revenue constitutes a 35% increase over last season. That's huge.

If the club is able to maintain that pace of growth -- obviously a massive supposition -- we'd be at well over £600m in three more years. And at that point, we'd be playing with the big boys in the transfer market.

Mark #37, that's the figure Kinnear specifically cited in his interview with EvertonTV today. He didn't equivocate or estimate -- he banged that exact number.

I would hope and expect that next year's numbers will be powered more by new commercial partnerships along the lines of Pepsi and Budweiser, and by (please!) overseas marketing. Events are a nice lagniappe but they don't bring in huge cash.
Ian Bennett

Someone needs to tell Angus you get what you pay for... peanuts comes to mind.

Anyway, we will be okay because there's only one team in the Premier League and that's Arsenal, who are miles ahead of everyone else.

So let's finally hope we get a good start. Please, Angus, spend it -- class costs money.

40 Posted 18/08/2026 at 20:35:46
Martin @ 15, on the basis you suggest Moyes might get a contract extension if we qualify for Europe. Shouldn't he be sacked for failing to get European football last season?

Bearing in mind Kinnear stated that TFG saw last season as a failure.
Christy Ring
41 Posted 18/08/2026 at 20:36:37
I see Villa have signed Wan-Bissaka on loan... would he not have been a great buy early in the window? I'm guessing he's to replace Konsa going to Arsenal.

But with Timber and Saliba still injured, Arteta might keep White, who can cover both positions. No guarantee we'll get him if we have all our eggs in one basket. Spurs & Forest also interested in Munoz?

What about looking at Cash from Villa now?
Mike Gaynes
42 Posted 18/08/2026 at 21:11:14
Annika, there are three possible reasons why Moyes wasn't sacked:

1. TFG declined to hold Moyes 100% to blame for those last 7 games because the players failed too;
2. TFG did hold Moyes 100% responsible but decided the failure was outweighed by his unexpectedly putting us in Euro contention in the first place;
3. TFG have no brains and/or ambition (very popular theory here).

I know you consider both #1 and #2 to be invalid reasons, but those are the facts.
Christy Ring

The Athletic reported we offered €15M for Castagne.

Moyes and our recruiting team getting more and more desperate. Are we just looking at a chart and crossing out anyone who's above that figure?
John Collins
45 Posted 18/08/2026 at 21:52:53
There is a 4th reason, Mike.

Moyes won't rock the TFG boat while he's slotting £5M per annum.

"£265M revenue constitutes a 35% increase over last season. That's huge."

And yet we are still £55M shy of last summer's spend.
Dave Lynch

47 Posted 18/08/2026 at 22:04:14
I was simply replying to Martins post @ 15 Mike, not giving a general opinion.

Martin suggested Moyes might get a contract extension if he got us into Europe this season.

I was making the analogy that he should have been sacked for failing to do so last season as TFG reportedly saw the season as a failure.

Not sure if you were able to listen to the entire interview? Kinnear claimed TFG looked upon last season as a failure by missing out on European competition.
Mike Gaynes
48 Posted 18/08/2026 at 22:07:05
Christy #44, you shouldn't make things up. I have The Athletic open on my laptop, and they have reported only that he's on our list. No offer. None. At any price.

John #45, the window ain't closed yet. See you in a couple of weeks.

Your first line makes no sense. The question was why Friedkin didn't fire Moyes. Boat-rocking???

Dave #46, fine, disprove me. Kinnear says everybody in top management viewed the season as a failure because we fell short of Europe. Yet Moyes is still in his job. That's a fact. Tell me why you think Friedkin didn't sack him for that failure.
Tony Abrahams
49 Posted 18/08/2026 at 22:19:27
A real fact was that the manager kept picking those same players for the last seven games even though a few of them were clearly running on empty.

Another fact is that Kinnear, said he was "happily dissatisfied", even though his bosses thought the players and manager, hadn't accomplished their goals and viewed the season as a failure.

Work that one out.
Tony Hughes
50 Posted 18/08/2026 at 22:32:54
The facts are that the season starts on Saturday, not in 2 weeks.

We're going into the first game with three new additions, one of whom is injured. We're going into the season under-cooked again. This is all on TFG.
Ian Wilkins
51 Posted 18/08/2026 at 22:33:09
Tony,

Kinnear has attempted to clarify his "happily dissatisfied" comment... I got the impression he was keen to.

He said he was satisfied with the off-pitch progress, satisfied with some on-pitch progress, but everyone was dissatisfied with the season's end. He said there was an internal review as to what happened in the last 7 games.

It will be interesting to hear what the conclusions were, but he said they have taken some of the learnings and are addressing them in advance of this season. I'd like to understand that a lot more because I can't see it yet.
John Collins
52 Posted 18/08/2026 at 22:40:17
Look forward to it Mike.

Do you reckon we will spend £115M to match last season's spend plus the extra money generated by the 35% increase in revenue?
Tony Abrahams
53 Posted 18/08/2026 at 22:43:25
My own view is that I don't think everyone is satisfied with each other behind the scenes right now, Ian.

I am not a fan of David Moyes but to come out with this five days before the season starts, when it's clear that there are still some deficiencies in the squad, doesn't make any sense whatsoever to me.
Mike Gaynes
54 Posted 18/08/2026 at 22:48:44
Tony H...

We're going into the season this Saturday with four starters we didn't have for the first game last season (and a fifth on hold), an actual playmaker in the middle and actual speed on the wings. If you want to be miserable and pessimistic about that, you go right ahead, that's your choice.

Tony A... yet the bosses didn't sack him for it. They still want him running the club. Work that one out.

Personally, I had no expectation that all the deficiencies in the club would be addressed by the start of the season, or even in this window. I'll wait to judge the transfer business until it's finished.
Tony Hughes
55 Posted 18/08/2026 at 22:59:21
I'm not miserable or pessimistic, Mike, just realistic.

I don't know how many times this has to be said, but here we go again... Rohl and George were squad members last season, they aren't new players coming into the squad. We have three new players.

I value your opinions normally, Mike, but your continued polishing of the TFG transfer turd isn't good.
Oliver Molloy
56 Posted 18/08/2026 at 23:01:15
Richarlison or Delap? Both valued at £40M by their clubs (Richarlison for me).

Regarding the ongoing right-back shenanigans -- apparently, according to Kinnear, the club's first choice target could still happen; if not, there is another first choice that could still happen!
Ian Wilkins
57 Posted 18/08/2026 at 23:32:47
Chelsea and Spurs are overvaluing Delap and Richarlison. Neither will sell at the prices being suggested. Spurs may come down, it's his final year of contract. Delap could be a loan to get wages off the books.

Is Moyes looking at Zian Flemming because he fears neither will happen? Do we need to offload Beto first for whom there is no reported interest?

Kinnear did put a spin on the transfer committee, all parties including Moyes involved, and there was a ‘healthy tension' between those wanting to develop younger players and those wanting an immediate impact.

I think there's more in this admission than Kinnear spins it.

He said “We won't have a right-back in time for Saturday”….

So it seems we are signing Munoz from Palace and the deal will be done after we play them. Palace don't want him to play for us against them... makes sense to be honest.

I expect us to sign Munoz after the Palace game. Richarlison and Grealish would be boss.
Mike Gaynes

Tony, Merlin and George weren't playing for Everton at the start of last season. Merlin was hurt and George didn't arrive until January. They therefore qualify as new starters since the first of last season, which is exactly what I wrote.

And you can characterize your posts anyway you'd like to, but to this reader, you are one of the most relentlessly negative and critical posters here. I can't remember the last time you wrote anything positive or optimistic. That's your choice.

I choose otherwise and justify the course. You wanna call that “polishing the turd“ you go right ahead. I'll be laughing at you and the rest of the sourballs in a couple of years when our new owners have us back up where we belong.
Sean Herbert

Mike @ 54, what the chances of those 4 so-called starters being selected for the Palace game?

Knowing Moyes, pretty slim, I would think. Maybe 3 at a push, but we know Moyes likes to stick with his (to him), tried and trusted.
Mike Gaynes
61 Posted 18/08/2026 at 00:18:30
I'd say all four, Herbert family. Branthwaite, George, Rohl and Hackney will all be in the 11.

And what do you mean "so-called"? Garner's and Norgaard's eventual returns would endanger Rohl and/or Hackney, but they're still legitimate starters.

If we really will make £300M next season, that gives us £255M SCR to play with at 85% and given our current player costs are at most £200M. According to AI, costs are closer to £150M, that gives us at roughly £75m headroom still (and yes, that includes signings so far -- see my link above).

That £75M, the way SCR works, would be enough to buy 3 £60M players on £200k a week on a 5-year contract and still have some change.

Sorry, I can't see it... and I'll tell you now it won't happen: we operate in the £15-25M range.

Mike, #42, I think your #3 option is wrong. I doubt any fan thinks Friedkin lacks brains and ambition (not sure you maintain billionaire status without it). The question always remains how that translates to success for Everton and also how you measure that success.

Increased revenue is a success, no doubt about it, but in pure footballing terms it is not.

As for not sacking Moyes, that's the brains talking over the heart of the fans, I'd assume. Sacking Moyes whilst you are successfully increasing revenue probably doesn't make financial sense. I get that, to be honest.

However, when Kinnear talks about cup runs, then history with Moyes as manager would suggest they will be disappointed again. That's where I find that statement a bit disingenuous; Moyes has no track record of achieving success in any domestic cup.

If that is a genuine ambition (and 90% of his conversations with the owners aren't about revenue) then I think they would've sacked Moyes. Difficult to see how they couldn't in my opinion.

Stu, my own deeply personal hunch is that this is Moyes's final season as a manager. Anywhere.

If I was a betting man, I'd take a longshot that, this time next year, he'll be in an office down the hall from Kinnear and Cox, and we'll be talking about the new guy with great excitement.

My #3 option was satiric, but it's very real on the pages of TW. Lots of folks here think Friedkin is enamoured only with Roma and has little interest or ambition for Everton aside from keeping us mid-table and cashing in on Hill Dickinson Stadium.

But the revenue connection to success on the pitch is obvious. The more revenue you bank, the better you can compete to sign the most expensive players. Kinnear talked about SCR in very specific terms in that interview.

Mike @ 61, my mistake.

When you said 4 starters we didn't have last season, I instantly assumed you were talking about the new signings. Hence the so-called comment.

I didn't realize you were talking about the whole squad. But, whilst I would hope he is, I don't think George will be in the starting 11.

I'm quite on #32 Tony Hughes's ship. How can this be a good window? The one positive thing is we have a younger squad.

Branthwaite is a fucking liability due to his injury record. So if a right-back doesn't arrive, the Keane - Mykolenko - Tarkowski shambles defence will sink us again.

I hope they do their shit correctly after all these educated polite words they spit out on the radio... Bastards.

"The number one right-back we wanted", would that be the one for whom we know an offer was made, the Canadian at Celtic?

Which does make me wonder how some become public knowledge and others not, or is this part of the owner's walkaway strategy?

Stu (#64); "Not sure you maintain billionaire status without it (brains and ambition)". For the first bracketed part, I offer you PotUS.

As always, actions speak louder than words, proof of the pudding is in the eating... Kinnear talks well and gives us some lovely spiel to reassure all.

It all comes down to what we actually do next season. My expectation for this season is getting European qualification.

When TFG took over, it was survival. Last season was stability in the Premier League, and this season we should be kicking on to qualify for Europe.

At present, the squad looks quite some distance away from finishing Top 7 or Top 8. Let's see what the next 3 weeks brings to bridge that gap.

Another season of stability doesn't quite cut it, I'm afraid.

Mark #63,

I may be wrong but I think Kinnear very specifically ruled out the approach you are suggesting. He stated Everton wouldn't be "blowing the doors off" in terms of transfers and made the point that Everton couldn't afford to spend big on a player only for that player not to work out.

I think we will continue to mainly operate as you say in the £25M or less market.

You can think I'm negative all you want, that's your prerogative../

I've followed Everton for over 45 years, a good bulk of the time as a season ticket holder through the 80s and 90s, and attending when I can now and again when I can, so I've been more than positive and supportive down the years.

We were told in January no money was going to be spent because we were waiting for the summer window and now you're telling us you'll be laughing at us in couple of years?

So another few transfer windows of never-ending patience and waiting, eh?

I haven't read the majority of posts but I'm going to give my opinion anyway.

You don't understand the fans' frustrations, Kinnear, because you're not a fan. It's a job for you, whereas for us mugs it's an integral part of our lives.

I've been on holiday for over 3 weeks and every morning put ToffeeWeb on to see if we have finally signed a right-back. Alas, no.

But you smugly tell Toffee TV and Radio Merseyside we will have one in before the window closes? Personally, I think you're talking absolute nonsense -- we won't have one.in before Palace. It's an absolute shambles which has been allowed to drag on.

I'm no lover of Moyes by any stretch of the imagination but his body language screams out "It's a gang of jokers I'm dealing with!"

You might talk the talk, Kinnear, but you don't walk the walk.

Not only do I agree with you but I also do not have too much of a problem with us operating in that market. My point was simply that if we are to believe the numbers, we do actually have an enormous amount of scope, even now, after signing the players we have, to add to the squad, and not just through loans.

The problem is, I don't believe the numbers, especially the revenue numbers. I suspect those are much lower. And I don't think TFG plan to go anywhere near the 85% ratio allowed (it would almost certainly make us loss making). And if they believe they can turn is into a CL challenging side while making profits, that is a hard task and it will need brilliant recruitment to pull it off. I could give a long list of players we have bought in this category over the years who ended up costing us money.

Everything is only pure speculation at this moment in time though so I suppose it’s better to just sit back and wait.

We're becoming a laughing stock. Evertonia stated this week that we have signed 4 specialist right backs in the past 26 years. We need a right back, a left back and a striker. We're deluding ourselves again that Barry is good enough based off a few pre-season matches. Barry and Beto miss too many chances when it matters. Moyes hints that Hackney isn't ready. Keane was given another contract extension. Every Evertonian I know thinks we should have said "thanks for the service" and got rid. Norgaard is injured. We have signed Alex Cleland and Nathan Patterson from north of the border as fullbacks. Why were we looking at the Celtic lad when we have seen in the past that the standard in Scotland is far lower? Wan Bissaka, who has played at Palace, Man United and West Ham isn't good enough? Do we have a clue as to what we even are looking for or need? I've said it before but what do our scouts actually do?

I work with two Leeds fans. One of them admires Kinnear because he often faced Leeds' fans wrath. He said when Bielsa went, only Kinnear actually came out and answered questions and tried to explain things; the owners etc. went into hiding. I'll judge him on who we bring in over the next couple of weeks and how we start the season. Yet again we will be starting a season under strength. Do we ever learn?

A premier league club that cannot, or fails to recruit a right back between the the end of one season and the beginning of the next has most definitely some sort of serious problem.

I don’t know if its financial, the recruitment team, the manager or all three. Regardless it is scandalous.

Surely we haven’t spent the available funds on other positions before the glaring priority is sorted out.

We all sound very frustrated and angry about the RB situation but but we haven't had a fully functioning top level RB or LB for that matter in 5 years. Go back 5 years and Seamus was on the wane then and so no matter how much we moan on here, nothing will change until Moyes is moved on. The RB and LB were problems before he came back but he's doing nowt about it cos he knows he's just got to survive this season. He looked totally fed up when he was interviewed by Vinny O'Connor the other day because he knows he is not calling the shots anymore as he was under Kenwright. My take is, if this was authentic & not completely reactionary to Moyes; and had he not been shoved into an interview by TFG - he’d have ended the season with an address to the fanbase, started the season with an address, used Evertonfc.com to do it - ie a direct line of communication to people he is supposed to serve - he doesn’t need a journalist to do it.

But I tend to think like Derek @85, and although I've never been our manager's biggest fan, it doesn't fill me with much confidence with the season starting on Saturday,

The other way to look at it is that Moyes often does better when he's facing adversity and seems to thrive on that type of pressure a lot more than the pressure of expectation.

There is a problem here.
The lack of a RB, appears totally negligent, plus failing to address other key areas, is symptomatic of a wider problem.
Moyes whilst party to recruitment and not left out ( as Kinnear was at pains to point out does happen elsewhere in the PL), does not control and dictate it as he would like.
Other members of the transfer committee have different perspectives. Investing in youth and potential, developing players. Hence the Diblings, Rohls etc.
Moyes wants the here and now, others want the future.
The disagreement has created a vacuum where pondering and debate create inactivity.
We miss transfer opportunities because of it. We’re still pontificating because of it.
We have gaps in squad because of it.

At least Giulia Bould asked every question that the fans have been asking; whether we agree with Kinnear’s thoughts, at least he answered every question.

The only thing that ever matters is results: start winning and a lot of the criticism goes away but start losing and the criticism reaches new heights.

We football fans are fickle, you just have to look at Arsenal: for years, their fans have complained about the way Kronke has run their club… but last season we didn't hear any criticism of Kronke from Arsenal fans.

Michael Kenrick, yes Kinnear said quite clearly that in buying players there is now a collaboration of the stats team the recruitment team and the manager. But that collaboration could be Kinnear saying the owners want younger players and the stats team and the recruitment team have decided Dibling is the player to buy and the owners want us to push ahead with the deal what’s your thought’s Davie.

But you may well be right and Moyes desperately wanted to splash 50% of his transfer kitty on a player who he would spend the next 12 months teaching him how he wanted him to play.

Listened to the interview, and also watched the interview on Toffee TV. He answered every question put to him. He said we will get a right-back by the end of the window...

Yes, we all wanted a right-back in at the start of preseason, but as he said, it has to be the right one, the right fit, someone who wants to play for Everton -- don't just go and get any right-back.

Not the last game at Goodison, or the first game at Bramley-Moore Dock, which kind of makes our CEO's words about signing players who want to embrace playing for Everton very fucking hollow to me.

Phil 97,

I commented on another thread that European qualification is a double-edged sword, a punishment almost, unless it's the big one of the Champions League. At the point you need to increase the quality and quantity of players, you get your budget cut.

Champions League revenue will likely go a long way to equalising the equation, but Europa League and Conference League -- especially the latter -- will not, the revenue is comparatively small.

I think they have that wrong and it really punishes clubs trying to bridge the gap via the lesser European competitions.

I've now checked out what Kinnear said in his other interview and, as Mike G said, he was clear it was £265M this past season, and that really did surprise me, in a good way. That would make £300M this season achievable (but Mike, we obviously won't get 35% growth every year, we've had a big one-off increase from the new stadium).

On that basis and if even the higher £200M squad cost is correct, we do have a lot of wriggle room. It suggests we are not even quite at 70% SCR. And that got me thinking, with all the talk of stability and sustainability, and references to Newcastle and Villa, that maybe that is the plan, to stick with the lower ratio of 70% so, if we do qualify for the lesser European competitions, we don't need to take an axe to player costs.

And, as an owner bonus, it might well leave them with enough to take another dividend, as Tony A suggested. In a way, it makes sense, but it is not going to get the pulses racing and it will certainly put a lot of onus on world leading recruitment.
Phil Roberts
108 Posted 19/08/2026 at 11:46:39
Yes, Mark -- and that leads to a few posts I have made about the conspiracy theory of qualifying for Europe would take us to 70% not 85% and we would not have the squad depth for Europe and the Premier League which would put staying in the Premier League under threat. That delivers far more money than the two lesser European competitions, so taking the foot off the gas to finish low enough to not be in Europe was a message passed down in the middle of April.

To be fair -- and this will annoy many on here -- by the time we beat Chelsea, we were 7 points better than the previous season. Maintaining the results from 2024-25 would have put us 7th and in the Europa League. Getting the extra points to replace Liverpool in 5th would have been possible -- but St Virgil's winner made it difficult and I wonder if that was the point that we decided to go for 2026-27.

And for those moaning -- the club is run by business people. Their target is not the same as ours. If you had the choice of a clapped out Vauxhall Nova from Arthur Daley motors today ot wait a few weeks until the local Porsche dealer was trying to get rid of 26 plates before the 76 came out and would drop the price but in the meantime had to take the bus, what would you do?

We have 2 games without a recognised right-back; it still leaves them 36 to make a bigger difference than a 2nd choice lesser player.
Mark Taylor

Phil

On the RB issue, while at one level it is right to wait for 'the perfect one', I'm reminded of the saying that a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. But we don't have a bird. Your theory works provided we get that first choice. But it also risks us going without any specialist RB for yet another season for all 38 games.

That sort of risk management is high stakes and Kinnear has left himself exposed here because he has made it quite clear that playing Jake at RB is not the solution. Maybe worth reflecting that sometimes, perfect is the enemy of good.

Certainly agree re the lesser euro comps. If we are to believe Kinnear, it wasn't intentional, in fact quite the opposite in that they regarded it as failure, but I take your point there can be a difference between what is said in public and what is said privately. It is notable that Palace and Sunderland have been net sellers this window. Brighton have pretty much washed their face. Bournemouth have spent this window but they made a big profit last window. I guess that re-inforces your point. They are not out there spending the fruits of (lesser) European qualification!

Moyes has previous for this. When we signed Tim Howard there was a "gentleman's agreement" that he wouldn't appear for us against United..

I agree that Moyes would be very unlikely to start the player so soon but I don't think that would enough to convince Palace to let the player go before they meet us.

There is still 11 days left to sign players, so you never know who might still be signed.

As far as the owners are concerned we are a cash cow to them, they are not fans.
Would they like to get us into the top 6, sure, but they probably realise it would take a very sizeable chunk of money and still be unlikely to work. Plus you have restrictions on the amount of money you can spend anyway.

Just to be clear I've been accused recently of being a Moyes lover, I don't give a fig who our manager is we have tried a multitude before, I just think the amount of criticism he gets is over the top.
As I have said many times before our main problem and the reason we have won zero for 30 plus years is the quality of the players not who the manager happens to be.

Mike Gaynes #48,

Why would I make up the Castagne link? It was on NewsNow Everton and said it came from The Athletic. \

Looking at Kinnear's interview, and he can confirm four days before the Palace match, we won't have a new right-back by Saturday, and in Moyes's interview, "Hope to have new players in before the window shuts." Pathetic.

Moyes's interview last season, he said loads of players turned us down because they wanted to play in Europe. He didn't use that excuse this preseason.

'We've been linked with at least ten right backs since the start of the window, 4/5 have gone to other clubs including Wan-Bissaka to Villa on loan, and they only enquired about him days ago, we're linked with Munoz for the last 2/3 weeks, could have signed him before Spurs sold Spence, now they're in the mix?

Linked to Fort from Barca for weeks, available for €10M, Dortmund who are in Europe, now in the mix? Did our recruitment team not have the names of a small number of fullbacks to choose from, which should have been our No 1 priority at the start of the window, instead of hoping the one or two they identified, which Kinnear said in his interview, are still available by 2 September?

Not having a right-back for the opening game is not a disaster nor a disgrace, as long as we get a right-back, a decent one, before the window shuts.

If we somehow manage to miss out again, that would make us look amateurish in the extreme. I can't believe that will happen, but it's Everton... you never know.

Fair play to Kinnear for coming out and at least answering a few questions, and for rightly describing the end of last season as a failure.

Moyes's silence suggests something isn't right behind the scenes. I've thought this for a while. I don't believe he'll be happy to hear the end of the season described as a failure.

After all, in one of his last press conferences last season, he said he didn't know why the fans were disappointed with the team. I would imagine he might think differently now he's heard those very words from his boss.

Arsenal have agreed a £50M+ deal for Konsa. They're well stocked for defenders and full-backs aren't they.

Aston Villa are having all their best plundered, Martinez next. They are likely to spend big in what's remaining of the window.

Football is becoming an impossible two-tier system.

Aston Villa won the Europa League and finished in the Champions League spots. A club going forward, right?Wrong.

What does the summer bring? Left-back sold, star midfielder sold, star striker possibly going to Saudi, star keeper presumably leaving, number one centre-back going to Arsenal.

It feels like "What's the point?"

For those who saw Forest go through the leagues and win the Football League and European Cup, it feels like that is gone. Any team with a handful of decent players would just get picked off by the big 6.

The SCR rules on 70% vs 85% are stacked to disadvantage playing in Europe. More games, and lower costs needed. Joke.

Christy #118, my apologies for the implication. You're certainly not the first fan to be suckered by NewsNow, which is sort of a sewer grate for transfer rumours and is well-known for juicing them up a little.

I note The Athletic's publication this morning of a poll of Premier League fans for their optimism about their clubs for the upcoming season. Nobody who peruses TW will be surprised to read that Evertonians are the joint-second-most-pessimistic fan base. Just 60% described themselves as optimistic.

The most sourball fans of all? The RS, at just 58%. The most optimistic are Leeds fans at 99%. Villa, Forest, Brentford, Chelsea and Spurs fans are all above 90%.

Dave #86, I presume some role in recruitment. Most of our recent signings have spoken of his evangelistic fervor for Everton and cited it as a reason for joining up.

But what difference does it make as long as he's off the touchline?

I saw the interviews with Guillia Bould and Baz and as one of the biggest critics of the new management team I have to say I found Kinnear to seem honest and caring. He said he grew up admiring the Everton team of the 80's and that was why he wanted to come here and try to recreate that.

He explained a couple of things: -

1. He maid the claim he was happily dissatisfied before the Sunderland game when he was fairly confident of us getting into Europe even though it was only reported a few weeks later.

2. He said that Everton have extensive data on every target but they will only go after players who want to come to Everton as a prerequisite.

3. He acknowledged that the RB situation was unsatisfactory but was confident we would get the RB we always wanted before the window closes.

4. He also denied that the Friedkins were also only interested in the return stating that they were on every day and first and foremost their main interest was Everton winning things.

5. He said that while acknowledging Villa and Newcastle had had success that TFG were interested in building a team for the future to go the distance and consistently be among the top teams chasing things and not a one season wonder.

6. He highlighted the recruitment process and the importance of getting players that Moyes can work with but did admit that there were constant disagreements within the recruitment process confirming what we all suspected.

Having said all that I remain unhappily dissatisfied to go to the start of the new season without a quality RB and goalscorer.

Ian #131,

I hope you don't mind me answering your question.

If Kinnear knows the full-back we're signing and Moyes wouldn't give Vinny a name in his interview, why the fuck didn't they sign him 8 weeks ago?
Ian Bennett
135 Posted 19/08/2026 at 17:58:25
Three parties are in the process, Christy. Buyer, seller and player.

If the seller and player want to wait it out, then there isn't a lot you can do about it, apart from pay over the odds.
Ian Wilkins
136 Posted 19/08/2026 at 17:59:59
They don't know which full-back they're signing. They have a list of options (no doubt reducing as some get picked up).

Going to the end of the window and doing the best financial deal with what's left on the list. There will be a couple of loans on the same basis.
John Collins
137 Posted 19/08/2026 at 18:01:43
If the seller and player want to wait, the buyer should move onto the next target.

The buyer risks being without a recognised right-back for 5 years using that format.
Ian Bennett

And buy 6th or 7th on the list?
Jay Harris
139 Posted 19/08/2026 at 18:31:27
Ian,

I would have had Wan-Bissaka lined up for the start of the window and then, once we signed him, go chasing after Fort.

That is why I am so disappointed in the "Elite recruitment team". I would also have gone for Parrott on a loan-to-buy option to see if he could cut it at this level.

Having said that, I don't know whether they would have come to Everton but, considering Wan-Bissaka did not get consistent game time at West Ham due to Walker Peters, he will not get regular game time at Aston Villa... so, if I were him, Everton would have been a no-brainer. It also destroys the myth that he wanted to stay in London.

Reading between the lines, I believe they have Johnston lined up and are looking at other options until the window end gets closer.
Jay Harris

I doubt we would be able to attract Douie, and his price will be really high. Munoz is not one for the future although at that price I would get him now.

We all keep going on about getting a right-back but in truth we need 2 because Patterson needs to be sold on and, apart from Rohl, Garner and O'Brien, who could do a temporary job, we have no cover.
John Collins
141 Posted 19/08/2026 at 18:43:50

If they've got a list of 6 or 7, there's even less chance of buying the right one.
Iain Johnston
142 Posted 19/08/2026 at 18:51:10
Matty Cash, seriously? Villa won't part with him as they've only one other right-back with Wan-Bissaka.

Aaron Hickey perhaps? Chelsea's Acheampong? These two could realistically be looking to move.
Phil Roberts
143 Posted 19/08/2026 at 18:55:46
Munoz could be signed on Friday but registration would be too late to play on Saturday.

However, there was a phrase we used in purchasing -- the timing of the buy.

When you bought often affected the price you paid. We needed money to avoid PSR so we sold Richarlison on 30 June. Levy knew we needed money so he got a discount. I suggest the price was coming down each day as we got more and more desperate.

If I had a right-back and most on here were responsible for buying at Everton, I would be laughing because you would be prepared to pay anything to have him by 20 August. You are desperate because you have to have one for the Palace game and I can bleed you dry and get you to pay well over the odds.

If only you were in charge of recruitment at Everton and I the CEO of a club with a decent right-back. But please don't wait until 1 September because I will want the money and be prepared to accept a much lower offer.
Ian Wilkins
144 Posted 19/08/2026 at 19:12:13

I don't think either Spence or Wan-Bissaka are what we are looking for. Both had good World Cups, but both struggled for game time last season, and neither convince on creating any attacking quality to offset the bollard we play at left back.

Man Utd took a £35M loss on Wan-Bissaka 2 years ago, so I struggle to see if he is the answer as he approaches 29. I understand he is better than what we have, but the bar needs to be higher than that.

The bar needs to be that we aren't looking to dump a player that is on a fat contract, that we've put £20M odd into, and are looking to sell at 30 or 31. That is a recipe for just squandering resources, and a place this club has visited way too often:- Walcott, Schneiderlin, Ashley Williams, Allan, etc.

Spence at £30M is fair money. He looked good at left-back in knock-out football. Would I be sinking £30M and a big contract on him? No I wouldn't.

I saw enough of him struggle at a 17th place Spurs over the last 2 seasons to know that is daft money regardless of what Inter Milan just paid.

I'd take Doue in a heartbeat. His stock is rising, and if he knocks it out the park, he will go for bigger money. If that eats more into the transfer fee, so be it. Cut the budget elsewhere.

The assumption here is that they're minge-bagging. I doubt that is the case. Far more the case is the player and club are still demanding amounts that no one is prepared to pay, and are refusing Everton's offer.

Was the wanting to play for Everton, choosing first choice & solving the right-back all linked? Let's see....

I've stood by that we have a list, and that they're not prepared to compromise on that list until the best options have moved on. Brave or foolish, time will tell.

Christy #134… because Palace won’t sell Munoz to us before we play them! I suspect we sign him on Sunday or Monday.

Christy #149, based on what we know of the players themselves from having watched the World Cup, I think we can safely assume that Doue and Munoz would be at the absolute top of our list.

Ian #147, I wholeheartedly agree on Spence. We saw in the WC how he lost his place in a shambolic Spurs side. For all his athletic ability he is a wildly slapdash defender, and Moyes must have lost all interest.

The Doue thing has a whiff of Grealish last year about it. I mean, lots of noise early, nothing. Then done! Maybe I just live in (idiotic) hope?
Wouldn’t it be epic to get Doue, Munoz and Grealish right at the end? And probably save £3M in wages by doing so?
I’m still dreaming.
I agree with you in regard to all the other full backs, but not with minge-bagging. Moshiri fucked us with his lack of that..

I believe he was never more than a filler or squad target, John. Good all-around player and ferocious competitor (seen him many times for Canada) who could move O'Brien to the middle, but he was never the star we need. And now injured, so off the table anyway.

Chris, no way on both Doue and Munoz. One or the other, no reason to spend on both even if we could.

Ian@147... Djed Spence signed for Inter Milan 5 days ago for £25.5m.

So, at 30 years old what has Daniel Munoz done to see his transfer cost quadruple? January 2024 Palace paid £6.5m now he's valued at £25m??
What are going to do, spend the £25m, probably pay him £75k a week for 4 years then let him trundle off back home to Colombia for free?

Ok, fair enough it is our usual Modus Operandi so it's probably a done deal.

@Mike,
I agree, I’m being silly (in an Everton world).
We’ve been without a competent RB for so long that two seems ridiculous.
But we’ve got an actual 2 per position thing forming, kinda. We’re short at least 2 full backs and a decent striker from having a pretty decent side, imo.
To have those two at RB would make for a great bench/squad.
Imagine never having to see JOB at right back ever again? Haha. Nah, I can’t either!

Now Arsenal have signed Konsa, I wonder if White will be our man?

I know some on here don't rate him but I certainly do. Top player and I think a change would do him good. Ideally we would be playing off Munoz against White to get the best value. Either would vastly improve the situation at RB.

Doue I think is a pipe dream.
Mike Gaynes

Iain #155, Munoz was an unknown two years ago outside South America -- Genk is pretty obscure -- but I saw an article at the end of last season that ranked him as the #2 RB in the PL, behind Jurrien Timber but ahead of Reece James based on his attacking. (Personally I'd go with Pedro Porro.)

And of course Munoz had an outstanding WC, Colombia's best player IMO.

I would call him a good value at £25m, and would change our attacking profile instantly.

I still think we need a centre half, if anything happens to Branthwaite we are well and truly up shit strasse without the proverbial paddle.

Maybe this is where the interest in White comes in, because like a few others have said hes no right back hes a centre back, and an average one at that.

I still firmly believe that we wont sign a right back before the window shuts, but maybe thats the pessimist in me, Everton do that to you.

I truly hope they make me eat my words but I'm not holding my breath.
Ian Bennett
169 Posted 20/08/2026 at 08:08:36
Iain 155 - that is the problem with Munoz. You are buying for the here and now, with no resale value and a player probably finished with one major injury on a 4 year contract on big wages.

At £25m and £5m a year wages, it will cost the best part £10m plus a season, may be twice that in terms of what games you actually get in the first 2 years.

I would be cautious on high mileage full backs. It is the most physically demanding position on the pitch, and once the body cant do it, the drop off is immense. Neville, Robertson, Coleman were never the same once they couldnt run - but you still have to pay the contract.

That is precisely why they haven't pulled the trigger. They might have to, but I think they are always looking for players with a longer path ahead, upside potential and resale value. It is why I hope it is Doue. Norton Cuffy also fits their profile.

Ben White would walk into this team. He would be better than any, other than Branthwaite.
Sean Herbert

Ian @169, in your opinion, he would. That doesn't make you right, the same as my opinion doesn't make me right.

For us, he is a centre-back, not a right-back, and he certainly isn't a top right-back. He would be the best right-back at Everton simply because we haven't got one.
Tony Abrahams

Dave @86, my guess would be that he would end up like his old mate William, hanging around like a bad penny, feathering the nest for both himself and a few of his chosen nepotistic friends and family.

Good post, Ian @169, especially the wisdom about players, who are starting to get on age-wise, playing in a very high mileage position.

If Ben White signs, it's quite possible we will still end up playing Jake O'Brien at full-back because he's probably a better central defender than everyone bar Jarrad Branthwaite!
Ian Bennett

Or O'Brien, Tarkowski or Keane for that matter? People are talking about White being signed a a right back. He is better than Patterson no doubt. That doesn't make him a top right back.

If White is signed I will get behind him and hope he proves me wrong. But I would much prefer an out and out right back, not a converted centre back. No matter how many games he has played there.

I was interested in your categorisation of bang average. It was given with so much authority, I was hoping for the insights of our world beaters.

Tuchel.& Arteta seem happy enough that he is a right back, and a player that can play centre back if needed. Presumably because he is a good, all round footballer that is quick, positionally sound & decent on the ball. How wrong they are.

Perhaps they know less than a ToffeeWebber. I doubt it, but that might be the case.

He gets forward, joins in the attacking.
Decent defender, 6 foot 4 so Moyes ideal full back.

Well og course it's difficult to compete with someone who is 100% right in everything Ian and whose opinions must not be disputed.

White is a centre back converted to full back, that doesn't change no matter how many times you claim it not to be true.

Tell me, where did you aquire all your undisputable knowledge because I am sure others would be interested in learning from such a fabled place?

Could it be possible that you are not the all knowing expert that your posts continuously suggest you are?

Obviously know one can dispute your views given your unlimited font of all things football
