The section below contains team details, scorers, and brief match reports for Everton's FA Premier Youth Academy U-17 games during the 1998-99 Season.
|
U-17 Match No 1; Peterborough, Saturday, 5 September
1998
Everton: Williams, Hogg, Clarke, Tuft,
Pilkington, Penman, Kearney, Lester, Curran, Chadwick, Eaton. The under-17 team, coached by Alan Harper, won 4-0 with goals from David Eaton, Nick Chadwick, Peter Clarke and Damien Curran. Harper reckons that the result didn't flatter us.
|
U-17 Match No 2; Bellefield, Saturday, 12 September
1998
Everton: Williams, Pilkington, McAlpine,
Tuft, Clarke, Kearney, Penman, Lester, Curran, Eaton, Chadwick. Subs Hogg,
Woodcock, O'Hanlon, Smith, Machin. The under-17's drew 0-0 to keep their unbeaten record. The Blues had chances but missed them – the best fell to Chadwick minutes before the end but he hit the bar.
|
U-17 Match No 3; Bellefield, Saturday, 19 September
1998
Everton: Williams, Penman, Pilkington,
Tuft, Clarke, Lester, Valentine, Kearney, McAlpine, Chadwick, Curran. In the 'It could only happen to Everton' category we managed to concede an equalizer in the 97th minute. The injury time was largely because of a number of Spurs' players going down with cramp. Nick Chadwick scored for us and coach Alan Harper reckons we played well and deserved more out of the game.
|
U-17 Match No 4; Fulham, Saturday, 26 September
1998
Everton: Williams, Penman, Pilkington,
Clarke, Tuft, Lester, Kearney, Valentine, McAlpine, Chadwick, Eaton. Peter Clarke converted a spot kick after Nick Chadwick was fouled. Fulham then equalised, before Ryan Valentine and Tom Kearney both scored cutting inside and cracking home with their left foots. Harper said that it was the best they'd played so far - "we're creating plenty of chances in games and if we ever have a match where our finishing matches our approach play we'll win by a landslide". [Just like the first team then!]

U-17 Match No 5; Bellefield, Saturday, 3 October
1998
Everton: Williams, Penman, McAlpine,
Tuft, Clarke, Lester, Valentine, Kearney, Curran, Chadwick, Eaton (Price)
We kept up our unbeaten run by beating Wimbledon 4-0. Nick Chadwick opened the scoring before Eaton got the second. Peter Clarke then converted a penalty following a foul on Chadwick. Substitute Price completed the scoring when he chested down before volleying into the net.
|
U-17 Match No 6; Burscough, Saturday, 17 October
1998
Everton: Williams, Penman, Pilkington,
Tuft, Clarke, Lester, Kearney, McAlpine, Curran, Eaton, Chadwick. The under-17's finally tasted defeat getting turned over 3-1. Liverpool took the lead after 15 minutes, Nick Chadwick equalised with a 25-yard screamer. Liverpool then re-took the lead midway through the second half and completed the scoring five minutes from the end. Alan Harper said "it was a fair result. We simply weren't good enough on the day".
|
U-17 Match No 7; Manchester, Saturday, 24 October
1998
Everton: Williams, Hogg, Pilkington,
Tuft, Clarke, Lester, Kearney, Valentine, McAlpine, Price, Curran. After a promising start to the season this was the second defeat on the trot. United took the lead before Joe McAlpine equalized with a "superbly struck" free kick. United retook the lead before another Joe McAlpine free kick was neatly volleyed in by Damien Curran. United finally clinched the winner ten minutes from time. Alan Harper said - "We certainly played a lot better than we did against Liverpool, which pleased me. Unfortunately we didn't get the breaks when they mattered".
|
U-17 Match No 8; Manchester, Saturday, 31 October
1998
Everton: Williams, Penman, Pilkington,
Tuft, Clarke, Lester, Valentine, Kearney, McAlpine, Chadwick, Curran. Looks like the Under-17's were on fire away at Man City as they ran out winners 6-0, with Nick Chadwick getting the first five goals. We led just 1-0 at half time before Chadwick added another four goals and John Lester added the sixth with the "best goal of the game". According to Alan Harper "Nick missed his easiest chances. It sounds odd, but Nick has played much better this season. All of his goals were decent finishes to excellent approach play. He may have scored the goals, but it was a very good team performance."

U-17 Match No 9; Blackburn, Saturday, 7 November
1998
Everton: Williams, Penman, Pilkington,
Tuft, Clarke, Lester, Valentine, Kearney, McAlpine (Price), Chadwick, Curran.
After the heights of Man City there was a bump back down to earth against Blackburn. We started off where we left off against Man City with that man (boy?) Nick Chadwick scoring after 2 minutes with a far post header from a McAlpine cross. The Blues soon faded though according to Alan Harper – "The first two minutes was the only period of the match that we produced anything. We were very poor and Blackburn comfortably deserved their victory".
|
U-17 Match No 10; Bellefield, Saturday, 14 November
1998
Everton: Williams, Pilkington, Price,
O'Hanlon, Clarke, Lester, Valentine, McAlpine, Curran, Chadwick, Kearney.
Fulham scored first before Ryan Valentine stroked in Nick Chadwick's lay-off. We took the lead when a Fulham defender sliced a cross into his own net, and extended it when Peter Clarke scrambled in the third. That should have been it but a late Fulham goal sparked a last five minute cavalry charge which we repelled comfortably. Under - 16 international Sean O'Hanlon was described as outstanding
|
U-17 Match No 11; Crewe, Saturday, 21 November 1998
Everton: Williams, Pilkington, Price,
Tuft, Clarke, Penman, Valentine, McAlpine, Curran, Lester, Chadwick. We appeared to be on the way to victory thanks to a Joe McAlpine free kick which was fumbled into the net by their 'keeper. However, Crewe equalised in the final minute of the game. "A draw was fair enough" admitted Alan Harper, "The conditions meant neither side was able to play much football."
|
U-17 Match No 12; Bellefield, Saturday, 28 November
1998
Everton: Williams, Pilkington, Price,
Tuft, O'Hanlon, Penman, Valentine, McAlpine, Curran, Chadwick, Kearney. Nick Chadwick returned to scoring form with a brace which takes him to 12 goals in 10 games. His first was a clinical left foot finish, his second was a bizarre effort after his first attempt was blocked by a colleagues head and he reacted quickest to turn in the rebound. Penman scored the third with the goal of the game, taking the ball from 'keeper Williams racing 20 yards before playing a one-two with Damien Curran and carrying the ball on to slot it past the 'keeper. Villa's goal was a consolation strike with 10 minutes to go. Alan Harper said of the performance "I was very pleased with our overall performance. We played very well and could have had six or seven goals."
|
U-17 Match No 13; Liverpool, Saturday, 12 December
1998
Everton: Despite us taking a first half lead through Tom Kearney Liverpool came back in the second half to snatch a 2-1 victory. Their first came through a penalty in the 65th minute, the winner came ten minutes later. The Liverpool coach described it as a good game which was fairly even but they deserved to win. Well he would say that wouldn't he?
|
U-17 Match No 14; Manchester, Saturday, 16 January
1999
Everton: Williams, Hogg, McAlpine, O'Hanlon,
Pilkington, Penman (Byrne), Valentine, Lester, Curran, Chadwick, Kearney.
Quite a turn around after us beating them 6-0 back in November. City went into a 2-0 lead before leading scorer Nick Chadwick reduced the deficit with his 13th of the season. Hopes of a comeback were dashed though when City increased their lead again. Alan Harper wasn't too downhearted "We enjoyed a fair bit of possesion but we didn't really create enough chances. The lads played well enough, without looking like scoring that often".

U-17 Match No 15; Blackburn?, Saturday, 30 January

|
U-17 Match No 16; Bellefield, Saturday, 6 February
1999
Everton: Williams, Hogg, Tuft, Pilkington,
Price, Lester (Byrne), Kearney, Valentine, McAlpine, Eaton, Chadwick. The under-17's season is coming off the rails somewhat, compounded with a landslide defeat at Man Utd. Alan Harper - "The scoreline didn't really reflect the way the match went. We did OK for an hour but then United scored a second goal and we didn't defend at all well after that, which is quite out of character for the lads this season. We have showed a good attitude all season, but that wasn't the case against United." David Eaton scored the Everton goal after the United 'keeper couldn't hold a Nick Chadwick shot.
|
U-17 Match No 17; Sunderland, Saturday, 13 February
1999
Everton: Taylor, Penman, Tuft, O'Hanlon,
Price, Hogg, Kearney, McAlpine, Curran, Eaton, Chadwick Sunderland took the lead and Everton levelled through David Eaton. Craig Hogg had a shot which was spilled by the Sunderland 'keeper and Eaton reacted the quickest to score. Sunderland then won the game with 5 minutes to go. "We lost it with 5 minutes to go, but the boys didn't deserve a finish like that", said coach Alan Harper. "We played much better than we had done in the previous two Saturdays and should have come back with something."
|
U-17 Match No 18; Bristol, Saturday, 6 March 1999
Everton: Taylor, Penman, O'Hanlon (Tuft),
Pikington, Price, McAlpine (Lester), Hogg, Valentine, Kearney, Chadwick (Curran),
Eaton. It was fullbacks Craig Penman and Michael Price who were the unlikely goalscoring heroes for Everton. After Bristol had taken a 1-0 lead, Penman struck a spectacular left-footed volley into the top corner to score a marvelous equaliser. But Bristol reclaimed the lead before Craig Hogg scored a second leveller, then Michael Price added his weight to the Blues' attacking efforts and snatched the winner.
