Quarterfinal draw promises Wigan (H)

FA Cup 6th Round Draw
In the draw for the 6th Round of the FA Cup, Oldham or Everton will play at home to Wigan Athletic. Everton still have to beat the Latics in the 5th Round replay at Goodison Park a week on Wednesday in order to progress in this year's competition. Both Manchester clubs were drawn at home again, but at least one of them — United — could face a top club if Chelsea beat Middlesbrough in their delayed 5th Round tie.

The full draw for the Quarterfinals of the FA Cup was as follows:

Everton or Oldham Athletic v Wigan Athletic
Manchester City v Barnsley
Manchester United or Reading v Middlesbrough or Chelsea
Millwall v Blackburn Rovers

All I wanted was for us to avoid the Manc clubs and Chelsea, a tie between 2 of those 3 sides and us to get a home tie should we see off Oldham and all have happened so I'm very pleased with the draw.

It means that we'll probably have to play one of the big boys in the semi or the final when they're always pumped for it. Not sure if it wouldn't have been better to get Man City at home or something like that when they can't be bothered.

Fucking Hilarious stuff on here... Why would anyone be made up with the draw?

The semi-finals if we get through two dodgy ties would be made up of both Man City and Man Utd who will both go through the QF stages. If we touch lucky and get Blackburn or Milwall in SF, we will then meet one of the Manc clubs in the final. Big IF as well. Remember, this is Moyes we are talking about. Do not think for a moment that if we did get to the Final and faced one of the Manc teams that Osman and Neville wouldn't be in the team because they both would be. Down to 9 men from the start then...

Oh, and by the way, Wigan won't be any pushovers either once Moyes plays one up front at home and loads the side with defenders... Jesus, some of you will never catch on, will you/?

We won't find Oldham any easier at Goodison than we did last night and if we beat them we have to remember that Wigan made us work hard for our win against them over Christmas. We should be able to take both of them at Goodison but our fragility means we can't take anything for granted.

Get past the two latics, skin Blackburn in the Semi, then into the final against Shitteh. Mancini has a pre-match strop during the team talk which demoralises the team. Someone forgot the extra froth on his cappucino or something.

We win comfortably, Hibbo scores, Moyes signs a new contract.

BK wins the euro millions and national lottery on the same night and buys us a brand spanking new stadium. We go on to global domination, BK gets knighted...

OK, OK scratch the last part. Otherwise, it could happen.

First of all a big thanks to Swansea for fielding the reserves against Redshite.
The cup draw is good for Everton if they can beat Oldham and if they can't then pity on them.
Wigan were generally rubbish against Huddersfield although taking care of business in the end.
James Vaughan was unlucky not to make it 2-3 at a vital time when Huddersfield were looking to come back.
The semis look like they will contain Manure and/or City or Chelski .
If the Blues can avoid these in the semi then we could be at Wembly again, without pre-empting the Oldham result of course.

Like any trophy though if we want to win I tthen we have to beat a big team at some point. Surely we can't bottle it every year? Saying that it would be nice to play someone who hadn't just gone toe to toe with Barcelona and we'd actually have a team not shorn of its 3 best players...would make things a bit easier.

No doubt moansey will spout , not looked at draw because we have to beat a top quality team in Oldham to progress. Ps on the red shite 5 0 win today got me thinking, how many league games have everton won by 3 goals or more under moyes . Can't be that many over 11 seasons.

Wembley here we come again ... .

But Moyes has to learn some lessons first ... that's the tricky bit.

Paul Dark
24 Posted 17/02/2013 at 18:45:24
By the way: Martinez is a hideously overrated manager, and I hope he gets nowhere near the Everton job ... ever. His teams are dirty, cynical and ineffective ... oh, and shapeless. He's Moyes with a smile (though the Ginger Whinger's teams aren't that dirty, thankfully).

Much as I don't really like him, I think Moyes should stay for a season or two at least - for thesake of stability, if little else.

Agreed Patrick. Two tricky games but what a chance. If this draw doesn't motivate our boys nothing will. Just a shame Hibbert and Coleman are still on the sidelines.

Will Neville retain the RB shirt in the replay? Keeping tabs on a quick winger 15 yrs his junior became a wee bit too much at times.

Insulting remarks about Martinez are not only unworthy of the people posting them, but they are well wide of the mark as well. He rested key players today and his team toyed with Huddersfield who are a Championship team, remember. He can unearth quality players at cheap rates like Moyes, (Kone, McCarthy, McManaman, Moses, Diame) and he can win at the big team's own grounds with a team from a rugby town with a turnover and wage bill less than ours. Yes I know where they are in the league! But we are talking about Wigan here not Tottenham.
At the end of the game today he made a very telling remark. He said that he's trying to get his 17 man squad playing and rotating like a team, and he's happy with the way they are gelling. Isn't that what just about everyone on here has been crying out for Moyes to try? He's only 39 and has more about him than Moyes had at the same age.

You're right Nick he has brought on some good young players.

Probably do an Ince and try and buy him back in a year or two for 6 mill !!

Agree with Nick Waters #255. Whilst we fans think a club of our (self-perceived) stature should be able to attract a manager like Bilic, under BK we don't have the budget for it. I am not talking about managers' salary, but rather the funds required to build a team. Martinez will tick more than one of BK's boxes if/when Moyes leaves at the end of the season.

It won't be Laudrup, Bilic or Holloway after all the MOB can't change its name to LOB, BOB or HOB but with Martinez they can keep their title as the MOB.
Paul Holmes

If you understand football and want to watch a decent style with a blend of young players coming through then Martinez is a good choice.

If you want the same old shit of the last 10 years with OAP players (Neville, Osman etc), never winning a derby match, then Moyes is the man.
FFS, get Martinez so that the likes of Barkley can come through and progress and in turn make Everton stronger.

The media are building up Oldham. They did outplay the RS until the last 20 whereby they were backs to the wall. Yesterday we had control of the match until the last 10 minutes where it went all Stoke City. We played badly in my opinion because we created few chances which isn't good enough against a League One relegation battling side.

But for the media to bang on about how good Oldham were is nonsense. They kept trying, credit to them but how many times did they commit unpunished fouls or pass the ball off the pitch. Loads!

They will be a different prospect at Goodison where they can't use a slope to their advantage and won't have the home fans roaring them forth.

Plus hopefully Gibson and Mirallas will just have a little more match sharpness by the replay and we might have a decent right back in place as opposed to the hapless Phil Neville.

This is a great opportunity to get to the Semi. Fate has handed us a wonderful hand.

On another subject, Anichebe is really looking awesome these days. His finish yesterday was brilliant. I like him because he scores all types of goals. This season we've had a tap in, a header, a sweet strike, a shot on the turn and a volley. I just hope his injury isn't another 2 month lay off!

Watching Vic yesterday and his old partner Vaughan today, I think we let the right one leave. Vaughan is a real battler but he can be a headless chicken and doesn't offer the same variety as Vic. (Never thought I would say Vic was better than Vaughan!)

Paul David

Andrew

I know I hate Anichebe so I always look for the bad in him but his goal only came about from the defenders mistake, he did take it well. His touch and passing was still shite yesterday and besides the goal he was beaten to the ball by the defender every time. If you honestly think Anichebe's recent displays have been awesome, you would probably be sexually aroused if we had someone like van Persie.

Andrew James
48 Posted 17/02/2013 at 22:45:08
Paul - ok well you have some biase here and I am coming from the middle ground. He looked far better than Jelavic because at least the ball was sticking with him and he was beating people.

He out muscled the defender and then finished with aplomb. Let's face it, the supply yesterday was poor but at least he went looking for the ball. I didn't say he was awesome yesterday but in the last 2 months his performances have caught the eye.

Ernie Baywood
49 Posted 17/02/2013 at 22:45:13
That couldn't have come out much better in terms of a route to the semi. Our chances of making the final might have been better if we'd drawn a big side at home.

Anyway, over to you Everton. The Cup is being kind - don't fk it up.

Andrew James

Ernie - know what you mean. I would fancy us against City or Chelski at home.

But at least if get past the gruesome twosome from Lancashire we go to Wembley and then anything might happen

Come on Blues...make up for last year's dreadful humiliations

Paul Holmes — I look forward to Martinez bringing his winning mentality should be take over. It's just a shame that he loses the majority of games he has managed in the top flight. Still, he plays a few youngsters and that's the main thing.
Andrew James
52 Posted 17/02/2013 at 22:57:41
Chris - I agree with that. Everyone keeps banging on about Martinez but I would wager that DM, on a similar budget, finished much higher in 03 and 05 than Martinez ever has. Everyone keeps praising him for avoiding relegation. Surely, if he was all that, they would have mustered a mid-table finish and put such fears to bed?
Paul David
53 Posted 17/02/2013 at 22:49:25
Anichebe only out muscles far smaller players, when he is against similar or bigger players he shits himself (Vidic).

Cant remember who we played but the other week he actually did put a shift in, putting himself about and putting challenges in. I said at the time he only ever goes in for a challenge when he is sure he cant get hurt, like tracking back and sliding in from behind/side. Yesterday there was a perfect example of this, him and the defender running towards each other in a 50/50 and he slows down and pulls out.

Another example of this coward is on set pieces. He always puts himself on the keeper, that is a small players job. Any other 6ft plus centre forward would be wanting to to get on the end of the corner, backing himself to score. Instead Anichebe tries to make it look like he's doing something by putting the keeper off but I cant help but think its cos he wants to stay out the way of were heads will be flying about and he might get hurt.

Andrew James
54 Posted 17/02/2013 at 23:04:04
Paul - you are right in what you said about hating Vic.

I see things differently. He often gets played up front on his own or alongside the completely unaggressive Jelli. Therefore, from what I see, he gets roughed up by both centre backs. I admit he does sometimes target smaller men but that might be a confidence thing at the moment. Plus the very best players bully the vulnerable. Bale and Ronaldo switch wings to target the defenders they can out jump, out run or out muscle. And comparing him up against Vidic - arguably the best centre back in the Prem - is unfair. Let's see how he gets on with a 3 or 4 month run.

Bottom line is he's scored as many as Jelavic but has been on the pitch far less. I think he deserves some credit for that and will deserve some further if he gets into double figures this season which our strikers very rarely do.

Dread to think what will happen with him if Moyes was to go though!!!

Paul David
55 Posted 17/02/2013 at 23:15:41
Andrew

Thats my point, centre halves bully Anichebe cos they can smell the fear from him and he has doesn't have the courage to stand up to big players. I only brought up Vidic cos we played Utd last week but it has nothing to do with ability. I cant think who Norwich have at the back but i'm willing to bet if they are big that they will win most headers over Anichebe. The times when I see Anichebe win most headers is when he is played out wide and its no coincedence that full backs are usually smaller.

As for this seasons scoring run, you have to remember he has been around for years and is probably not noticed by other fans or players. If he does manage to get into double figures then other players will have to take notice, how long do you think it will take managers and centre halves to realise he only has one trick. Inside the area with the defender at his back he will flick the ball to his right and try hit the ball with his left on the turn.

Andrew James
56 Posted 17/02/2013 at 23:35:00
Paul

I would be prepared to bet that if he can go a few months without being injured he will start bullying those centre backs and our opponents.

Plus, although I know what you mean about him being sporadic, he's been playing at this level for 5 years so opponents know all about him. His variety of finishes means they will struggle to combat him completely.

But you clearly won't budge as others won't about Hibbert. No coincidence that this is his longest lay off and we cannot keep a clean sheet. In our new high line Hibbert's pace would make a difference.

Paul David
57 Posted 17/02/2013 at 23:42:31
Andrew

I suppose we'll find out in the coming months as Moyes always looks to get him involved but you also point out his biggest flaw ( and that takes some doing considering I think he has no talent ), his mental fragility. He shouldn't need months of injury free football to stop being a shit house.

I doubt other players know all about him as he's never been a threat or played often enough.

Ernie Baywood
58 Posted 17/02/2013 at 23:45:46
Not convinced by the argument above. Any 6 foot centre back should be trying to get himself up against a smaller man. Big Dunc used to spend matches trying to get himself up against the full back.

And personally I thought Vic had a crack at Vidic... he just got beaten on ability and intelligence. And to be fair the service didn't give him many chances.

Nowadays he does shirk the odd 50/50 but he never used to - and look where that got him. Sometimes the right decision is to let the yard dogs win the ball in their own half.

Don't get me wrong, he's still only a few notches above shit.

Paul David
59 Posted 18/02/2013 at 00:00:07
I agree its the right thing to do to put yourself up against the smaller man but when against another big man he doesn't win nearly as many headers as he should. He knows he has to battle to win the ball against a big man and he doesn't have the stomach for it.
Andrew James
60 Posted 17/02/2013 at 23:55:24
Ernie & Paul

I think you are being very harsh on a guy who has had some awful injuries and is finally doing the business. "A few notches above shit"?

Our fans reaction to our homegrown players is puzzling. You all hate them if they're great but leave : Rooney. You all hate them if they're good and remain loyal : Hibbert, Osman. The ones who leave and do well in the lower leagues are used as ammunition against Moyes like Baxter and Jutkiewicz. The ones who don't get enough time in the team are used as further ammunition against Moyes: Barkley, Duffy, Velios etc etc

Being an academy graduate for Everton seems to be a lot harder than if you are a player coming in.

Paul David
61 Posted 18/02/2013 at 00:05:23
Andrew

Maybe I am being harsh ( I don't think I am though ) but he is nearly 25, twentyfuckingfive. It will take more than a few goals to make up for years of goal droughts, constant injuries, shit performances, laziness and terrible attitude.

I disagree with your comment about home grown players as well, Ball was one of my favourite players and the fact he was Scouse only helped that.

Ernie Baywood
62 Posted 18/02/2013 at 01:20:34
Andrew, I don't think any of that is specific to academy graduates. It's disappointing if we lose a good player, and poor players who stay are not highly regarded.

With Hibbo and Osman they've been good servants but I'd suggest that the club has been far more loyal to them than them to us.

And yes, probably a bit harsh on Vic. He's doing a job at the moment (hard to get too much more enthusiastic than that). Believe it or not, I'd love a home grown player to be a world beater for Everton. We all would - that much I'm absolutely certain of.

Victor is being played as a target man at the moment. He has a problem there as he can't play with his back to goal. The size of him he should bully defenders, not in his make up I am afraid. Although he does punch the turf now and again.
Sam Hoare
65 Posted 18/02/2013 at 07:58:23
It's easy to forget that Vic has very seldom had a run of matches in his preferred position of striker. I'd be amazed if he's ever played 5 consecutive matches there before this season. Moyes has often put him on the wing where he has struggled.

He's not a world beater but has looked much fitter and hence more effective this season. He deserves some backing, especially as his goal return/minutes on the pitch has been very impressive this season.
