Pienaar continues community work back home

Steven Pienaar is back in his native South Africa this month, using some of his time off to support the annual tournament in his old neighbourhood of Westbury in Johannesburg.

The former Bafana Bafana captain was in attendance at the Steven Pienaar Community Tournament that is backed by his boot sponsor, Puma, and covers all ages from eight years old upwards.

The 30-year-old explained his support of the competition, saying: “It is an honour to be involved in the event in Westbury; these kids don't have many opportunities so it is important for me to help them take the first steps to a better life.”

Sounds a great initiative.

I hope Martinez makes him work closely with Bainesy next season. Their understanding remains a pivotal part of our options.

When I saw 'community work back home', I expected to see this as the Sky-Daddy-botherer fulfilling some sentence from his court case a while back... can't remember that ever being resolved. (Or am I confusing him and that bloke with no legs who flipped and took out his gorgeous girlfriend?)

Checking our News Archive, seems our last entry on the Pienaar case was back in September:

Steven Pienaar was expected to return to the Randburg Magistrate's Court in South Africa today on an assault charge, but the case has been postponed.

Oh wait... now this is interesting, from 15 October 2012:
Soccer star's arrest stayed by medical letter

A warrant for the immediate arrest of Everton star Steven Pienaar was issued at the Randburg Magistrates' Court following his failure to appear to answer to a charge of common assault.

However, the warrant, issued by magistrate Salo le Roux, has been stayed until Pienaar's next scheduled court appearance, thanks to a letter from Everton's head of medical services Danny Donachie, giving an explanation for Pienaar's absence from court.

The letter, which was handed in to the court by Pienaar's attorney Cliff Alexander, stated that the soccer player, who recently announced his retirement from Bafana Bafana, had sustained a thigh injury against West Brom last month.

"A scan showed a grade two injury to his vastus lateralis muscle. Because of the injury, it is important that Pienaar stayed with us to undergo intensive treatment and rehabilitation," the letter said.

Donachie also stated that long-distance air travel could exacerbate the injury.

"He will continue with his rehabilitation until he has made a full recovery," Donachie said in the letter.

Interesting that Pienaar did not miss any games around this time. He played the whole of the West Brom game (1 Sept) and was involved in all subsequent games, including Wigan (6 Oct) and QPR (21 Oct), where he was sent off after a second yellow card. It musta been a miracle!

Seems that the South African legal system is absolutely chaotic it seems. Pienaar hasn't been to court over this assault thing despite being summoned in October 2012, and Botha the chief prosecutor in the Pistorius case walks through a crime scene, witholds evidence and is facing an attempted murder charge himself.

Unbelievable.
