''I’m surprised Everton fans are so positive about Martínez''

He was responsible for Wigan’s exit from the Premier League, but there are still very few voices of discontent among fans at Goodison Park as Roberto Martínez prepares for his debut season as manager of Everton.

Hard to be discontent about anything when he hasn't done anything yet.

It's a little bit scary, like coming out of a long relationship with someone you'd grown slighlty sick of. Now we've lost some weight, got a new wardrobe and it's exciting too. But will life be better, or will we end up pissed and crying, texting Moyes at three in the morning? It's gonna be interesting...

That's a really annoying article, particularly the comments from John Cross, who is, incidentally, a total plank.

I don't think there was ever a huge swell of support for Martinez. Laudrup, Periera and even Bielsa were favoured by many fans. I think most of us just expected Martinez to be installed and have decided to get behind him. Is that so surprising? What are we supposed to do? Slag him off before he's even met the team?

Daft article.

Agreed, Cross comments were really infuriating. I wasn't, and am not sure, about Martinez, because I believe his Wigan teams have been unacceptably poor defensively. But, like most, if not all of us, I'm behind Martinez. He did well keeping Wigan up for so long, helped the transformation of Swansea, played exciting football, and won the FA Cup with Wigan, albeit with relegation in the same season. I also believe he will bring one or two talented attacking players from Wigan with him, which will benefit it our squad. From those linked with the job, with the possible exception of Laudrup, I wasnt really 100% on any of them. Moyes, for his faults, has managed to tranform this club from bottom 6 team, to a top 6/7, with less money than pretty much everyother team in the league. He is not an easy act to follow...but I think/hope Martinez can do a good enough job, and I don't see why any real Everton fan wouldn't give him a chance.

Agree Phil, I think some journalists don't watch the games or know anything, he cut the wage budget by 25% and team cost 11Million also had his first 3 choice CB's out for long periods last year, how many teams would stay up doing that, yet still played good football (at least tried and generally succeeded) He was not my first choice but I feel enthusiastic about this year, I hope we start playing some good football and win some more games.

I hope we all get behind Martinez whatever our thoughts and show him how great Goodison can be COYB.

What else can we do but get behind him?
Would everyone be happier if we behaved like the Chelsea fans with Benitez?

I think that both sides of the coin are making valid points.

Ultimately, I think it would be prudent to reserve judgement for 2-3 years to allow him to put the stamp on a squad that will I think, be in transition.

Ooooo, I love a good shit-stirring slant.

He could have said..

"He kept them up for years with nothing and there was an inevitability about them going down, but never forget they beat the richest team in the world to win the FA Cup - an amazing achievement"

Instead he chose..

"Yes, he’s won the FA Cup with Wigan, which was a fantastic achievement, but ultimately they’ve gone down".

What a nob-head and what does he think our reaction should be?

"Hey did you read what that feller said on some website - MARTINEZ OUT!!"

As Paul Ellam says, what else can we do but get behind him?

As an Evertonian who has been attending for over 50 years how dare he call me positive. The nature of a true blue is to make Les Dawson look like a ray of sunshine.
Onwards Evertonians....the glass is not only half empty but about to be swept away by an over zealous kopite barman.

I don't understand why people are so obsessed about the fact Martinez cut wigans wage budget, I don't give a toss about that !! Lets be honest as long as we don't do a Pompey the only way we will get any success is by increasing our spending, the top teams have the biggest budgets, FACT !!

12 Posted 21/06/2013 at 17:16:43
Well that's a rather daft comment.

Ok Phil "daft comment" Sammon, RM comes in and slashes our wage budget, where do you think the money will go, back into the team or into the infamous black hole that is labelled "operating expenses" ? Its like Billy liar and his cronies dream come true !

I don't think anyone is saying that he gets a kick out of slashing wage budgets.

It was something he had to do at Wigan and another obstacle he had to contend with. It's a mitigating factor for their league placing and eventual relegation.

And as for you not giving a toss about our wage budget - that is a daft comment. You don't want us to 'do a Pompey' and yet don't care about the wage structure and expenditure at the club. The two go hand in hand.

I said I didn't give a toss about RM cutting Wigan's wage budget, if you read it correctly Phil. I then went on to suggest that to stand any chance of success we would need to increase ours, citing Pompey as a yardstick as to how far we should go with that without it becoming too dangerous, but I fear we have already hit that point.

So, to simplify, I don't give a toss about what RM did with Wigan's wage budget... and I'm not suggesting we DO increase ours — just that the teams with the biggest budgets have by far the larger amount of success than the ones with smaller budgets.

Oh, and I didn't say RM "gets a kick" out of slashing wage budgets either !

In fact sir, might I suggest that YOUR comment was rather daft :-)

Besides the reason Eugene gives above – what else could we do other than get behind him? I believe the following to be the case:

(1) Whilst Moyes did sometimes polarise views, I suspect most would agree that we had run out of road and steam under his regime. The likelihood would have been more of the same – comparative over-achievement relative to available financial support, but not the sort of football most of us wanted to see, especially when playing against the more successful teams.

(2) Martinez offers the potential for better football, probably more excitement, and the sense that our strikers might get more chances. I hope and believe that this excitement will take place more at the top end rather than the bottom end of the table.

Of course we are, we are not going to lower ourselves to the idiots that jeered Benitez's every move at Chelsea or the horrible Blackburn scum who literally hounded Kean out of the club. That's why.

The Everton fans fought over Bobby many weeks ago. Looks like someone is trying very hard to wind us up.

Gary I think you missed the point as Phil said its a factor in the relegation as you said the top teams generally have larger budgets but its not the only way look at Dortmund Robert Lewandowski is only on about £30,000 a week so shows if you buy well you don't have to spend a fortune on wages.

Personally I have serious doubts about Martinez and he would not have been my choice. However he's the one given the job so the best thing we can do his give him a chance and fully get behind him. I hope myself and others can avoid the temptation to turn on him if things don't go right at the start and try and give him time to make his mark. I believe we at Everton, both the club and fans, try to do things in the right manner. Fans at other clubs probably would be up in arms but WE'RE NOT LIKE THAT.

Don't take the bait.

Once past the headline the majority of the piece reflects the positive reasons why we're getting behind him.

The fact is we support Everton come what may, we might argue the toss between ourselves but ultimately anyone given the job would get a fair crack of the whip and not piled into before a ball is kicked.

People in the game continually say "proper football club" about us and this is why. Nobhead agitators like this prick are bemused and doubtless irritated at the lack of a "Woy" storyline as per the lunatic fringe across the park after Benitez.

I find it strange that many people 'have reservations' about Martinez because most of the MOB when asked who would replace him named RM.
Clive Rogers
25 Posted 24/06/2013 at 10:55:46
Personally I think RM could turn out to be a good manager. The problem is Kenwright and the board. The club is up to its neck in debt such that the banks will no longer lend to EFC. All the assets have gone and they can't borrow against the ground as it is mortgaged to the Prudential. It's obvious already there's no money available until someone is sold. 29 players signed already by PL clubs and none by EFC.

What chance does any manager have with this board.

Agree with Clive, Roberto will have to do it the hard way if the finances are so desperate (didnt realise they were so bad)

Even I could be a good manager, if I could go out and buy every good player in sight!
But thats Rednapps MO, hes bankrupt every club hes managed has 'darling Harry'.
