Kenwright: Two player enquiries made

, 26 June, 93comments  |  Jump to most recent

Everton chairman, Bill Kenwright, says that Everton have pending enquiries about two players as the club prepares for the opening of the transfer window next week.

Kenwright spoke with reporters after this evening's General Meeting of shareholders and indicated that plans are in place to start bringing in reinforcements to the squad when Roberto Martinez returns from his television punditry duties in the USA for the Confederations Cup this weekend.

"He [Martinez] has been away and you will always find that 1 July onwards - because that's when the current contracts end - that's when [transfer business] will start," the Chairman is quoted on evertonfc.com.

"Roberto hasn't met the squad yet and it's difficult for me to talk for him," he continued. "But, like me, he thinks they are fantastic, wants to keep hold of that group and wants to bring in two or three players in the positions we need them.

"We've got now, as we talk, two enquiries going on for two players.

"Roberto is back at the weekend and he's raring to go."

If it's any from the following list I would be happy!
Bony, Vossen, Ba, Lukaku, Bent, Honda, Fer, McCarthy, Lescott, Rooney ;-)

For what it's worth, the talk sport transfer guy on H & J reckons Alcaraz will be in at the weekend when RM comes back and that our interest in Honda is serious.
That would be a good start but I would want be wanting about 3 more at least.

Erm - Gary Carter - 626 Po, 'A 30-year-old Paraguan that was was part of one of the worst premiership defence ever' — He played a grand total of 8 games last season and I believe 22 the season before. So, let's not blame him heaps for last season shall we? In fact, many Latics pie-eaters thought they would have done much better with him for what this is worth.

Spitting eh? Well, if Felli stays – hope not – they will be a great team, spitting, head-butting, elbowing.

I would be more concerned about his injury record these last two seasons.

We will not get Honda.

Fellaini with doubt is the central most important player at EFC in all parts of the team as a defensive midfielder, attacking midfielder, striker and defender at set pieces. You would need at least three players to replace him with his height, skill and physical presence. Honda and McCarthy are small guys and don't have the physical presence or threat of Fellaini.

Fellaini is good/important but not that good/important, Steavey (#681).

The only way we will make progress this year and next is to add quality to the squad – real quality, if we can – and that will mean selling Felli, I feel.

We will be better without him if, IF, Teary Billy hands the sponds the the gaffer. Three/four quality signings and Felli out and we will be better.

On top of this – and I've said this until I'm blue in the face – he is a costly risky liability: temper-tantrums, elbows, Kirkby-kissing.

And, please Lord, no more silly wigs.

Please buy players with boss hair, Bobby!

So you are happy to see Fellaini go even though he made a lot of assists and scored 12 goals? Without him Everton would have finished mid table at best. If the refs had protected him, he could have scored 20 last season. There were times at set pieces he was blocked and held by defenders which was quite shameful.
Daniel Lawrence

But don't worry, Elstone expects us to be able to compete for the top half next season and that despite our financial restrictions, it's not impacted on the team, and in fact we've kept progressing.

Funny that, I thought we'd finished 4th, 5th, 5th in 3 seasons out of 4, in the last few years. How is 7th, 6th an improvement?

30 Posted 27/06/2013 at 00:06:23
If it's only 2 or 3, then maybe Martinez is going to blood in youngsters.

Junior, Barkley, Duffy and McAleny are all talented and should be given some sort of chance, Maybe a fresh start for Gueye as well.

Still not that sure on Vellios though. Gueye for that matter as well.

But I think we need more than 2 or 3, more like 4 or 5. We need more depth.

Paul Ferry
31 Posted 27/06/2013 at 00:17:55
I absolutely am Steavey (690), for reasons mentioned, although I obviously recognize the importance of what you say.

We need to move onwards and upwards and we will have a better chance of that, I truly believe, if we cash in on Fellaini + some TV sponds and get in four (five?) very good signings.

That all hinges on Teary Billy and Bobby getting it right and that is where I think your point becomes more important.

Seems Bill's back doing what he does best. How many believe him this time? Everton have already spent money as we paid for Martinez so no players coming in till at least two are sold – Fellaini? Heitinga? Baines?

And unless these are already half-completed, by the time they're gone and are holding shirts of other teams, we will miss our so-called targets and end up with the scraps. Maybe a couple of Stoke rejects or Arsenal bench warmers or a Man Utd prospect (risk) – Moyes thinking he's doing us a favour.

Bill's playing Mr Nice Guy, giving false hope. This man should have gone into politics, he's that good. Honda = No; Fer = No; Quality 20+ goal striker? Not a prayer....

Sorry if I'm sending negative waves out but I just don't believe anything till I see them holding shirts on SSN. Fer last year pictured on a jet smiling saying how great it will be playing in the EPL says it all. Mo Sissoko joining the Dark Side.... even the Manuel Fernandes fiasco peed me off. Nothing goes to plan with this club.

If players like Alcaraz are the kind of players that Martinez thinks EFC should be signing, he should have stayed at Wigan. What has he ever achieved to warrant him getting a move to a club like Everton? The guy has just been relegated with a team that had one of the leakiest defences in the league.

Isn't the transfer window already open? If not then how are Liverpool signing these players?
Michael Brien
39 Posted 27/06/2013 at 07:17:57
The transfer window opens on 1st July as I understand it - clubs may sign players as Liverpool have done but I believe they only officially join their new clubs from 1st July.

Liverpool it seems have been busy - but most of the Premier League clubs have yet to make major moves in the transfer market. I would think there is no need to hit the panic button just yet!! But in true TW fashion a lot of Evertonians seem to be doing just that.

Martinez has hardly got his foot in the door so lets give the guy a chance and be a bit more patient. I recall the close season of 1981 with a new manager in Howard Kendall - the magnificent 7 signings ? Some of them proved to be so - but some didn't. Who knows perhaps Roberto may give some of our young players a chance and at last we see the likes of Barkley and Velios given a decent run in the team or at least a place on the bench.

Ray Roche
40 Posted 27/06/2013 at 07:53:57
Michael, I don't think it's a case of people hitting the panic button. If it were West Ham buying 3 or 4 new players, no one would give a toss, but it's the RS, right on our doorstep, and their low life, deluded gobshite fans banging on about their new players and our inability to conclude a deal on any day but the last transfer window day, depending, of course, on our selling our best players in time bring someone in. It's just so "in yer face".

What do you mean, some Paraguayan? Paraguay is known as a country in South America to produce tough, quality defenders. Also, some of the best central defenders in the world, peak at 30. He is on a free and wont command massive wages, he also knows how to pass the ball out of defence, he is technically strong, great in the air and within a few months of the season, we wont be calling him, a 'dodgy Paraguayan'.
Alan Humphreys
43 Posted 27/06/2013 at 09:02:47
I can't help but think if those 2 players are Kone and Alcarez then we have literally done jack shit to seek out new players. Couldn't show more lack of ambition by simply raiding our new managers previously (relegated) club.

Agree with the above points, we need numbers but they have to be first team grade. We can't afford to have players that are not capable of fitting into our "unique" new system. 2/3 is fine now but 5/6 has to be the target for August 31st.

Why would you get so stressed about who the RS are signing. You've never seen these players play and neither have they. Who cares that they have made early moves? This kind of obsession is is exactly why they rub it in your face.

Martinez hasn't spent a single minute on the training ground with his players. I think we can afford him that luxury before we hit the panic button.

Phil, I may be obsessed but only with Everton. Neither do I, personally, get stressed with what the shite do. I am in exile in Wales and can usually dismiss most of the RS wools with a few well chosen words or facts. (like, have they ever BEEN to Anfield?..er.."No, can't get a ticket" etc.) I am merely proffering a reason why we can, collectively, get pissed off with the dire performance of our club whenever transfer windows open. Can I assume that you are perfectly happy with the way that Bill Of The Board conducts our transfer activity, or lack of?
I've re-read my comments. I can't see where I've hit a panic button. In fact I mention that people aren't hitting any button, panic, front door, or NURSE! type button.

The reason why we are all so cynical is the form and history of Billy bullshit who was at his finest yesterday.

You have to laugh or you would be sick.

Enquiries for 2 players. Is he real. Most clubs have probably made enquiries about at least 20 players out of which they would hope to land 2or 3.

We have found a suitable site but funding may be an issue.

Meanwhile Goodison is screaming for some maintenance.

My point was that it shouldn't matter to you.

Of course I'm not happy with BK. He's an incompetent, devious, liar and must be removed ASAP. However this transfer window, as yet, has been absolutely fine. In 3-4 weeks time if we have not made a signing then we can start throwing our toys out of the pram.

So, Phil, doesn't the fact that our nearest rivals, historically, geographically, as well as on the pitch, are strengthening their squad by 4 players, and that's only so far, and we have done what everyone else has done i.e., just LOOK at two players, matter to you? Stuff me, it matters to me!

Not so much their transfer activity, I could take that if I were confident that we'd be doing the same and be bringing players in. No, it's the fact that we all know that Bungling Bill will either wait until the last minute before we might buy someone, or make an embarrassing offer and trot out a "bad knee" excuse when we DON'T buy.

I don't see West Ham as our rivals, I see Spurs, Arsenal, the Shite, even Chelsea as our rivals. We may be in the gutter, but were looking at the stars... to paraphrase Oscar!

Surely the best thing to do is to analyse the squad before getting out our cheque book.

God, please don't let it be Alcaraz and Kone. I don't care how much Alcaraz did or didn't play last season, he's crap. Kone might get us a few goals but no more than Anichebe would. We just need a striker that can create goals for himself as the midfield are better at scoring goals than setting them up (Fellaini & Mirallas in particular).

Right-back, centre-back, centre-mid and a striker is where RM needs to look, but if there not any better than the players we have then we can kiss finishing above the scum goodbye.

Andrew (809) -

Duffy and Velios.

Time to give the kids a chance before we splash cash on players of very average quality.

I realize Alcaraz and Kone are "better" players, but I'd like to see the younger guys - especially Duffy and Barkley - get a real opportunity this upcoming season.

Andrew Ellams

Jamie, I just don't think Velios is going to cut it. I know we can't tell unless we see him but as has been stated on here before he has hardly set the reserves alight. Conor McAleny could well be a different prospect however.

Steven Astley, I fear you may be straying into FM territory. Every one of the players you listed will cost upwards of £10million and command large salaries. If they became available I fear we would be easily outbid.

Drew O'Neall

In the words of Chris Rock.. "Low expectation having Motherfuckers!"

Break the bank on Negredo, proven international quality in the goals business.

Anything else is just rearranging deckchairs on the Titanic.

We can't afford to buy a load of squad players but if we go long, have an injury free year and trust in the youth a little more to fill in rather than get a load of Nevilles and Scharners then maybe, just maybe we can finish seve...... I mean, finish in the CL places.

BK is definitely pushing for Martinez to do it all on the cheap. Using what we have, add two or three bargains and promote a couple of youngsters.

Cardiff look like signing the young Danish lad we were looking at for £7.5M. Swansea bid £10M for Bony. Meanwhile, we sit on our thumbs and "make enquires" for two players, one of which is a 30-year-old centre-back on a free transfer.

It's one thing not spending on a par with the likes of Spurs etc but to not even be able to spend like the teams who have just come up is embarrassing.

Kieran Fitzgerald
83 Posted 27/06/2013 at 17:59:05
Harold, who exactly is strengthening?

West Ham, but on the back of the new stadium. I can't see them having the ready cash right now to spend big. I can't see Carroll getting twenty goals next season either.

Sunderland are having a clear out and are planning to bring guys in but that's Di Canio being a maniac and putting his heavy handed stamp on things as a new manager. I can't see them shooting up the table next season.

Southampton are looking to spend but it's not megabucks and yes, they're raising their quality they're hardly bringing in world beaters.

Villa are bringing in players but they spent nothing last year and had a clear out. They will probably recoup a lot of what they spend this summer by selling Bent.

Liverpool are mainly spending the Carroll money. Their net spend is in or around 6m and they're hardly buying top notch quality.

We've been competing with the top four, plus Spurs, for several seasons now and I'm gone beyond worrying about what they spend.

It's early days yet, I'll start to panic at the end of July.

I think he hasn't been taking his medication recently. Time to put him away as he has quite clearly gone mad.

Looks like we have missed out on Bony (if we were ever in for him!)
If this lack of activity carries on there won't be any strikers left out there TO buy! And that include Kone!
We must act sooner in the transfer market or face the same frustrations as most other years as other teams snap up the players we are supposedly interested in

Kieran. Of course you could be right and maybe that's why Martinez is not concerned.
Perhaps he too is waiting to see what happens with Fellaini and Baines.

People keep saying 'Why aren't we bidding for so-and-so?' The answer is, like it or not, that there is absolutely no money; none whatsoever. Whose fault that is, is an argument for another day.

So let's get real and get used to the idea: EFC are penniless; therefore, we will have to bring young players through, and take a punt on a few unknown Bolivian coal-miners!

By the way, where is Vellios? ... and who is Bryan Oviedo?

I believe RS will offload Ratboy and that is why they are spending in lieu of the money coming in. Having said that I also believe that Fellaini will go at the right price and maybe even Bainsey. It's well known that the big fish swallow the little fish and that is what Everton are at the moment financially. Both Baines and Fellaini have been in great form and Everton can hold out for the biggest offer. It's only good business.

Perhaps some of our eternal ''Moyes'' benchwarmers will finally get a proper chance to prove themselves under ''Al Martino''.

I have a bad feeling it's Kone and Alcaraz...

Really excited now... NOT!

James (960) -

Someone said this earlier and I'd echo the sentiment.

BK said he has enquiries for 2 players. He's clearly misrepresented situations before (lied).

I fear it's very likely those 2 enquiries are for the outgoing Baines and Felliani before we look at anyone. We probably haven't even reached out to anyone for any player yet.

It's 9:50 a.m. on a Friday in the States, and having said that I feel like having a drink.

Honda and Redmond would make me quite happy (for now).

I agree with Stephen: Honda and Redmond all day. I don't see why we can't sign one of those pre-contractual agreements with Honda if they're seriously not gonna push the boat out a bit, that way we get Honda free (more or less) and he signs around January time, whilst Redmond and a few others come in, Kenwright willing.

We have young cover for almost all areas of the pitch, except the wings. Not only is Redmond young, but he has class. If we miss out on him and go for Kone, I'll have serious trouble maintaining any optimism this season.

Why is Callum McManaman seen as a great signing? A lot of Blues mentioning they'd like too see him back. He's not in the same league as Pienaar or Kevin Mirallas so he won't improve the first team, maybe just the squad. With better players in the youth system such as Barkley and Lundstram (Alan Stubbs and the backroom staff wouldn't have let him go otherwise) looking to break through, I see it as a waste of money.

Going back to Wigan for a load of players just proves what our ambition is. Bill said he and Bobby have discussed Champions League football – I am sorry but I haven't seen us linked with anyone who's going to help us achieve that.

It looks to me if we don't sell either Baines or Fellaini then we won't have money to spend; just proves that the Fer and Negredo bids were lies – otherwise, where's that money gone, Bill? There was no talk of us selling those two in January to fund anything; now, all of a sudden, Kenwright is shamelessly trying to flog Fellaini at press conferences for the arrival of the new manager and giving it the old Rooney scam over Baines.

If ya know yer history, when it comes to transfers with Kenwright an Co, he's as big an Evertonian you're getting, so how dare I question what he gets up too?

I don't believe there's any money until someone is sold. Why should there be all of a sudden? There hasn't been any since Fellaini was signed on money borrowed from the bank and the Extra Sky money is not due yet. Besides we are running at a loss rate of £9M a season so that's half of it gone.

Elstone said at the EGM. "we are getting better at managing loss without affecting performance on the pitch". He's telling us we are not going back into profit.

Forget Kone Darren Bent is available for a similar amount and knows where the back of the net is. I would be more than happy if we brought in Bent, Fer and Lescott.

Also laughable Bill is fuming Moyes has made an approach for Baines. Well if you leave a manager still in charge it's not rocket science he will tap players up, only yourself to blame Bill for not putting Moyes on gardening leave and keeping him away from contact of the first team.

Bring in Darren Bent, Lescott and Fer and that's me happy.
