Jagielka: Up to us to turn the corner

Phil Jagielka says the squad is determined to turn their form around, starting with the Third Round FA Cup clash against West Ham United.

The Blues fell to a 2-0 defeat to Hull on New Year's Day following goals from Ahmed Elmohamady and Nikica Jelavic at the KC Stadium.

And, while admitting confidence is currently low, the 32-year-old believes there is enough quality in the side to transform the side's fortunes sooner rather than later.

“There wasn't much in the game, but unfortunately we seem to be getting punished really heavily at the moment,” explained Jagielka. “We're really disappointed with the two goals that we conceded, but even then you think we might get back into the game.

“We were a bit unfortunate with Ross [Barkley's] strike in the second half and they managed to see the game out.

“We're very frustrated at the moment because results are a lot poorer than we expect, but it is up to us to turn the corner. It is going to be a tough week or so before the next league game and obviously with the FA Cup around the corner, we need to turn the season around.

“I think confidence is quite low throughout the team due to the results. We've got some really talented players and we've been playing some okay football but, unfortunately, the results haven't shown that.”

Attentions now turn to the FA Cup as Sam Allardyce's Hammers visit Goodison Park on January 6 in the Third Round of the venerable competition.

“It's only up to us to pick ourselves up, to start performing better and hopefully start winning games.

“Winning games is our priority whether it be in the league or the cups. We need to start getting some confidence back, scoring goals, keeping clean sheets — all the things you would expect from a top class team which we are.”

Like IÂ’ve posted before, I wonÂ’t be bothered if we go out. Obviously a good win would do morale good. But the form were in I just canÂ’t see us recording a good win. Our record against them is excellent but Fat Head will point to our dismal form and, if they score first, itÂ’s goodnight.

No, for me our season starts against Man City... a tough tough ask and one youÂ’d think we wonÂ’t get anything from. Lose the next two and letÂ’s see if the board decide to act I wonÂ’t hold my breath on that, though...

It's hard to turn a corner when you on a roundabout. The manager needs a plan all the players understand just to get off the roundabout then the concerted effort of the players may just manage that corner. Here's hoping.

I think the team on Tuesday should be;

Robles
Browning, Jagielka, Distin, Garbutt
Atsu, Besic, Barkley, Oviedo
Naismith, Lukaku.

I don't think we should risk McCarthy or Stones and we should rest Coleman, Baines and Mirallas for the Man City game.

At least someone at the club has realised the importance of corners.

Nicely done John Gee!
Hope we win and hope James Tomkins strains his vagina in the process. (I hope that doesn't get me sanctioned again!!)

I've had as season ticket for 17 years this year and, after I invaded the pitch when we stayed up against Coventry all them years ago, I have never really genuinely feared relegation so much as I do right now.

Call me a pessimist but I keep looking at our fixtures and thinking unless we bring in some real difference making additions in this transfer window, eg, Kevin Campbell back in the day, we will go down. Our next few fixtures consist of the current champions, two teams with the new manager effect, the Redshite who we never beat, an away Europa League tie, then Chelsea. We could easily be languishing in the bottom three if Martinez or Kenwright do not sort this current mess out.

Get the cheque book out quick! A strong fast defender, a playmaker and a rapid right winger who can deliver a ball!

If there was less talk in Echo/media about what they're (players) going to do and more action on the pitch, we wouldn't be in the mess we're in!!!

I'm sick of different players saying every week saying what we're going to do!! SO LET ME TELL THEM WHAT TO DO!

To start, they could pass ball forward!! Put free kicks into the box!! Opposing teams box not Tim Howard's!! Move!! Have a quick tempo in games and not just in 1st 10 mins or last 10 mins of games!! Finally then we might turn a corner!!! So please players shut up. COYB

Yeah good luck with that. Fantasy Football season has started in earnest. I very much doubt we'll sign a soul. Maybe some half-arsed keeper to backup Robles for 6 weeks at best.

Don't hold your breath. Those players simply don't exist, not for a club like Everton with bugger all going for us.

We need to adapt our tactics as we are now being pressed, no space for the attacking fullbacks, under pressure. Let's use the two very expensive "Forward" players as target men and play around and through them.

Given how vain RM appears to be, someone needs to enable him to change tactics a little without losing face, This is where a good chairman intervenes subtly. I fear, though, that BK is too busy manufacturing sentimentality and gush to deal with this very important practical problem.

I also fear relegation; the perennial strugglers are used to scrapping and winning points at the end of the season. We aren't (and never have been). Martinez is like a man with an ever-increasing overdraft who refuses to curb his profligate spending (I mean that metaphorically, of course) since it would involve some searching self-questioning.

I don't mind us losing valiantly to WHU - as long as we survive in the league. I do wish someone (chairman, player, journalists, wife) would wake Roberto up!

If RM has any nous at all he will realise the 2 cup comps we're in are a distraction, IMO he should field our weakest side (not the current one) and let us get the hell out of dodge, forget the cups we cannot possibly win and concentrate on the league.....the sooner he and the supporters realise extra games for an ageing squad means more injuries/ more lethargy the better.

Give him time, but he should use that time to reflect and act!

Paul, don't count on Chairman Bill to intervene. He's too busy with Andrew Lloyd-Webber preparing his latest west end production. I've heard it's a musical based on the life of captain creasehead, provisionally named "Slip Sliding Away".

To add a little more pressure, the draw for the 4th round of the Cup is televised tonight, around 7:00 pm.

Can you imagine if we get beat and miss out on a plum draw for the next round?

Totally off-topic, but I am a little sick of reading about non-football activities involving our players. Go to the official website, and you can purchase tickets for a ’Ladies Lunch’ with Tim Howard. The way this mob are performing, every spare minute should be spent on the training ground. I would have thought a ’Ladies Lunch’ was a daily occurrence at Finch Farm with the first team – they are all playing like a bunch of big tarts!

Pete Owen; He doesn't know our best 11 how will he pick the worst one, on present form if he does pick the weakened side it will stick 4 on the Hammers...yeah right

Nice one, Col.

I'm sure Kenno won't have a word - bit who will? I know you're a supporter of RM: do you think his obvious intransigence is a strength, in the final analysis? While it is undeniably true that you will always win football matches by scoring more than the opposition, Roberto's almost wilful refusal to understand that this approach doesn't work for long in the EPL seems stubborn and borders, for me, on the foolish. Likewise, his predilection for playing players out of position: I can see its theoretical value in creating a versatile and fluid system, but in practice he doesn't play a changing system and our players aren't versed sufficiently (vide Garbutt) in the art - and probably not good enough either.

One thing even you won't be able to explain, Col, is why he ever signed and then (repeatedly) played St Aiden The Useless (I'm being polite).
