Column The Battle for the Football League Championship Danny O’Neill 11 April 2025 44comments (last) The Championship promotion race is looking interesting. Burnley go top as it stands if they win tonight against Norwich City at home. Leeds Utd and Sheffield Utd only separated by 2 points. Could Leeds do the impossible having looked clear and dry a few weeks ago? Michael Kenrick 2 Posted 11/04/2025 at 21:29:20 Not sure how much interest there is in this, Danny, but I know you like your football. For me, it's a hard watch. The quality is not there and I don't really know many of the players. Unforgivable ignorance and Premier League entitlement, I know... Michael Kenrick 3 Posted 11/04/2025 at 21:40:31 And just as they were trumpeting Burnley's remarkable run of clean sheets about to equal the record of 30… The Cannaries score from a corner. Danny O'Neill 4 Posted 11/04/2025 at 21:46:11 I wasn't expecting, Michael, but can see why you separated. I'm intrigued to see who's coming g up. I wonder, hope, they won't emulate this season's promoted teams, who are heading straight back down. It's not healthy for the game. You have me sussed. I'll watch football anywhere. Next week it's League 2 Bromley v Morecambe on Friday, then up to Liverpool on Saturday. Michael Kenrick 5 Posted 11/04/2025 at 21:47:57 They need you in the stadium, Danny. Look how many empty seats there are…Is that coz it's on Sky… or coz it's not very good? Peter Mills 6 Posted 11/04/2025 at 22:19:52 Danny, I'd like Sheffield Utd to come up, and we could have nice days out with my sons in law and grandchildren, home and away. The Blades lads themselves aren't arsed, they want to win their league but would be quite happy to remain in the Championship. They prefer it. That says so much. Michael Kenrick 7 Posted 11/04/2025 at 22:28:26 Oh there was one player I sort of recognized... Shane Duffy. Wow a blast from the past — still playing in the Championship for Norwich City. Tony Abrahams 8 Posted 11/04/2025 at 22:39:35 I think that's the difference between the match-going fan compared to what Michael calls the unforgivable ignorance and Premier League entitlement of a man who is used to watching football on TV, Peter. Danny O'Neill 9 Posted 11/04/2025 at 23:06:00 I will sit as a neutral anywhere if it means watching football and I can't watch Everton. The Championship is becoming a microcosm of he Premier League Michael. Caution first for most. I think at last count, the 6th richest league in Europe, which says a lot.Peter, hopefully that will come off. I'd be happy to meet up. My last visit to BramalL Lane was years ago. A pre-season friendly between the Blades and Everton just after Howard Kendall had come back again. I went with a Blades supporting friend. We were sat in the stand facing the new stand, which I think was the opening night for it.Tony, as always, I'm looking forward to next Friday. Good football, great atmosphere and a probable sell out. Football how it should be.Michael, my plans are to be across in July. I think you are US based, although I seem to remember you referencing Devon. Correct me!!I am only planning on going to the West Ham fixture in Chicago, but will be using it to travel around the states, which I do often. If we get the chance, we can meet up and talk the blues. Les Callan 10 Posted 11/04/2025 at 23:14:06 I love The States as well, Danny, but will be giving it a wide birth whilst that vile and despicable character is in charge. (Tourism down by 17%, I'm told.) Bob Parrington 11 Posted 12/04/2025 at 08:00:33 Hi Danny,Early to late '90s, I coached with really good success firstly a collegiate team (5 years with only 1 loss and 1 draw) and amateur (decent standard) from Div 1 through to Div 1 successive years. It was really enjoyable. Recently, I was asked by one of them if I would coach. So I went to a few games and reported, "Sorry guys, this is way above my head. You need somebody much younger. I am coming on 77 in June." The game has changed so much that I would be well out of my depth but I still love to watch all levels of football ('soccer' over here in Australia). So I can understand you watching Premier League, Championship and others. Keep it up mate. We have only one life and we should enjoy it. Michael Kenrick 12 Posted 12/04/2025 at 08:12:09 I thought you'd like that, Tony. Don't know if you follow Paul Quinn's podcast but it seems one of the three has crossed the line and called it a day. I only skimmed the transcript but I think that there Premier League can even be a hard watch for some. Seemed you were getting close weeks back but have pulled away from the brink…?Whereas, if your arse is sat nice and comfy in yer fave armchair with a nice chilled Devon cyder… (There's a clue, Danny!) Tony Abrahams 13 Posted 12/04/2025 at 08:29:04 Podcasts tend to bore me Michael, but I wasnt having a cheap shot, at the television viewer, I was just pointing out the difference between the two.Its good that you still love watching football, but its become oversaturated for me and I find it difficult to watch more than one game a week, (if Im being honest, my favourite football is the latter stages of the champions league, but I still struggled to put Villa on because Id already watched Arsenal the night before)Im going to Port Vale today, and the biggest thing Ive noticed between the premier league and the lower leagues (even at notorious Millwall) is how much more relaxed it is for the match going spectator, away from the policing that comes with watching premier league football.Im probably going to miss the Manchester City game next week Michael, because I will be going to a kids football tournament so if you want to attend Goodison Pk, for one last time before its gone forever, then let me know before I offer the ticket to someone else!If you take up the offer Michael, you will probably end up sitting next to Danny, (how can you refuse now😂) but if you cant I did promise a ticket to the man, I used to call The Duke, although my daughter, who was responsible for pulling me back from the brink, is gonna be fuming! Danny O'Neill 14 Posted 12/04/2025 at 08:32:51 Always Everton first Bob, but the love of the game spans across a broad spectrum. I too coached at a decent standard, played semi-pro and have watched most levels from the old Conference Leagues North and South, as they were, through to Everton and the Premier League. You learn a lot about the game in doing so. Likewise, when I go to watch matches on the continent. Hopefully soon that will be to see Everton.I read that transcript, Michael. One of them, I think George (?), just seemed totally disillusioned.Back to the theme. Both Leeds and Sheffield Untied have early kick offs. The play offs looks like it will be between Sunderland, Bristol City, Lampard's Coventry and Middlesborough. Maybe West From and even Millwall have an outside chance. It's going to be interesting to see who comes up and who we will face next season. I've been to all of those stadiums, although technically, I can't claim Coventry, as I went to the old Highfield Road years ago.Now that would be some match report Michael? A double act!! Paul Hewitt 15 Posted 12/04/2025 at 08:52:17 If Burnley get promoted, they may not sue us. Liam Mogan 16 Posted 12/04/2025 at 08:53:07 Going to watch football in person and watching on TV is a completely different experience.I watch a lot of non-league around where I live and whilst the quality is not the same, in person it's engaging, fast-paced and entertaining. You are close up to the action and can see the commitment and ability (the players are still good footballers). It's a bit like boxing, where unless you've been up real close, you don't quite feel it. TV sanitises football and it's been a major bugbear from me how the game is now primarily targeted towards the at-home viewer. Michael Kenrick 17 Posted 12/04/2025 at 14:20:36 Plymouth Argyle leading 2-1 against Sheffield Utd.You might be onto something here, Danny! Peter Mills 18 Posted 12/04/2025 at 20:51:35 The Blades married-ins are troubled this evening. Danny O'Neill 19 Posted 13/04/2025 at 10:00:52 I can imagine Peter. Now 5 points off automatic promotion and they've lost their last 3 matches.Michael, we should do it. Mind, we'd have to figure out a title given the sensitivity caused yesterday!!I might just take in Hull v Coventry tomorrow evening. See how Lampard gets on. Andrew James 20 Posted 14/04/2025 at 21:52:03 Coventry at Highfield road, wasn't that a fixture we were cursed in for the 90's? I also recall Wednesday home or away was a difficult one. Don Alexander 21 Posted 14/04/2025 at 23:33:18 Providing you're a football fan of discernment, even if you're an avid supporter of one club, the Championship still has the proven track record for an "ordinary" club to overpower the much more long-standing Championship clubs to win promotion to the top division.Okay, the quality of football may obviously not be there but the competitiveness is, and it's attractive.I enjoyed watching the likes of Derby and Forrest, Huddersfield and the like quickly do brilliantly in the top flight once promoted. I enjoyed Leicester waving two fingers at the alleged "top-clubs" when they won the league with graft, skill, belief and a lethal, already aging non-league striker they signed from a club 40 miles away from Goodison via their knock-out scouting team (Steve Walsh having an administrative role only - and yet we signed him anyway and then made him very wealthy for sod all, as ever).More and more though, the promoted clubs to the Premier League struggle like hell, can't afford players that may even enable survival, and massively diminish the competitiveness of the whole division as a result. That said, diminishing competitiveness seems to be the ambition of whomever might be actually in charge of exerting control of the Premier League. Sigh. Mike Gaynes 22 Posted 14/04/2025 at 00:06:05 I love the Championship playoffs. For some reason they always seem to become the highest drama. Maybe the greatest ending I've ever seen (this side of DCL and Aguero) was the Leicester/Watford playoff when Leicester got stopped on an undeserved pen (and the rebound) and Watford went up the other end to win it ("DEEENEEY!!!) To me there's always something poignant about playing a 48-game season to get to Wembley for promotion and coming up a goal short. Pete #18, sounds to me like they do want to come up!Danny #9, don't forget you are invited to beautiful Seattle... where summertime is staggeringly lovely and the voters definitely didn't vote for that scumbag. (Les please note that Trumpies despise Seattle.) Kieran Kinsella 23 Posted 15/04/2025 at 00:15:47 MikeAs a meritocrat (is that a word) Ive always hated the playoffs in the sense every year you have three teams neck and neck, one misses out then gets usurped by a team 20 points behind who crept into 6th on the last day of the season. However, it always serves up cracking matches.Danny,Near contemporary maybe you can relate but its weird to me seeing Leeds, Sheff Utd and Huddersfield as the EPL Yorkshire contingent. Growing up Sheff Wed with their cloned Goodison stadium were the only show in town. Steve Oshaugh 24 Posted 15/04/2025 at 02:05:05 I really dislike the concept of playoffs if you get 3rd you deserve to go up. It's hard enough to stay up in the EPL anyway as it is let alone coming from 6th place. No footballing excuse for it. Steve Brown 25 Posted 15/04/2025 at 03:12:17 Like Peter, I have some very close Blades friends and family.Even after a 3 game losing streak, Sheffield Utd are 7 points clear in 3rd place. They deserve to go up.Great drama for us neutrals but just not fair or correct imho. Danny O'Neill 26 Posted 15/04/2025 at 06:04:30 Yes Kieran, I remember well when Sheffield Wednesday had some very good teams in the 80s with a run of decent top flight finishes before being relegated, although bounced back and enjoyed the best part of a decade in Div 1 / Prem, before finally going down and into near obscurity. On the play offs, in principle, I agree, the team that finishes 3rd should be promoted. The play offs, like any knock out competition is a lottery. It's great for the neutral, the TV and generating revenue and a few good days out for the supporters.I think the first season it was introduced, there was a 2-up, 2-down system, with 3 from bottom in the top tier playing 3rd placed in the 2nd tier. They still do that in Germany's 3 professional leagues. If you're in the fairly recently formed Bundesliga 3, it can be a bit brutal as 4 drop down to the regional, non-professional leagues at the next level of their pyramid, allowing 1 club (Champions), from each league to progress to the Bundesliga system. Paul Ferry 27 Posted 15/04/2025 at 06:50:33 OK Kieran, Danny, et al, I get it, the play-offs can be so unfair on 3rd place (and sometimes 4th or 5th). But what I do not understand is why on earth you would deny me the pleasure of watching bawling, devastated, broken-hearted, and inconsolable Leeds, Sunderland, and West Brom fans (for instance) after losing the Play-Off Final. Tony Cunningham 28 Posted 15/04/2025 at 10:08:21 Interesting stat (well maybe not interesting) but in the last 8 years 4 of the teams who won the play-off final managed to avoid relegation from the Premier league the next season with Forest, Brentford, Villa and Huddersfield. Not all cannon fodder. Andrew Ellams 29 Posted 15/04/2025 at 10:21:27 It's difficult to call the play off system unfair when this is the 39th year they have been in place so everybody knows exactly what the are playing for.Back in the day it was three from division 2 and one from Division 1 in the play offs. Paul Hewitt 30 Posted 15/04/2025 at 10:23:44 The play offs keep the season alive for a lot of clubs in the football league. If it was just the top 3 going up the season would be over for a lot of clubs Danny O'Neill 31 Posted 15/04/2025 at 17:55:09 Paul, my Leeds supporter friend is twitching nervously. He's been scarred in the past. I think they should be okay now, but Sheffield United could still spoil the party.Looks like anyone from 4th placed Sunderland to 9th placed Millwall as it stands. Danny O'Neill 32 Posted 21/04/2025 at 15:23:03 Leeds 2-0 up. West Brom a goal down. Mason Holgate? Oh dear. Not only did he not challenge the forward as it came in, he actually ducked to get out of the way!Keeping an eye on Harrison Armstrong. Quiet so far.3-0 Leeds now after 20 minutes. Ian Bennett 33 Posted 21/04/2025 at 15:27:11 3 nil, and it's all self inflicted from Stoke. The obsession with keeping the ball when you don't have it in your locker, needs stopping and quickly. Danny O'Neill 34 Posted 21/04/2025 at 15:30:58 Make that 4-0 Ian. 26 minutes. Ian Bennett 35 Posted 21/04/2025 at 15:37:53 Switched it to Sunderland vs Blackburn on a scouting mission.En-route derby just scored another. Holgate not looking the best.. Paul Hewitt 36 Posted 21/04/2025 at 15:49:29 Stoke 5-0 down and still trying to play out from the back. Why do managers do that? Danny O'Neill 37 Posted 21/04/2025 at 16:12:48 Paul because they all think theyre Pep. Eric Myles 38 Posted 21/04/2025 at 16:17:31 Paul #36, because it's what fans want to see and they'll be unhappy if he plays KITNAP football? Rob Halligan 39 Posted 21/04/2025 at 16:22:14 Leeds - 6-0. Still thirty minutes to go. Danny O'Neill 40 Posted 21/04/2025 at 16:27:29 Could get embarrassing Rob. Holgate hooked. He had a bit of a mare. Ian Bennett 41 Posted 21/04/2025 at 16:35:14 If I am Sunderland, I'd be letting Rigg go, and ask Armstrong & Chermiti on loan and a bag full of cash.Bellingham has some promise, but the others are way off the Premier league level. Danny O'Neill 42 Posted 21/04/2025 at 19:03:23 Well, the Championship race for the play offs is getting interesting.West Brom choked and have probably thrown it away. A big ask for Middlesborough now.Derby have a lifeline, as do LutonLooks like Burnley are joining Leeds as it stands. Tom Cannon hitting the net in reply for Sheffield United.Didn't see a lot from Harrison Armstrong. He looked a bit leggy and tired and was playing a lot deeper than I recall in his few cameos for Everton, where he was more of a number 10?Not much to see from Fellows, however, as I said earlier, difficult to judge on one match and a very poor performance from the Baggies. Robert Tressell 43 Posted 21/04/2025 at 19:26:37 Fellows is an interesting one, Danny. Maybe a similar sort of standard to, say, Keane Lewis-Potter of Brentford - another who impressed in the Championship with Hull.Whilst he's unlikely to ever be England quality, I expect Fellows to be a hard-working dependable sort who can fill in a few positions. Not an essential purchase by any stretch, but probably not a bad one - and certainly not bad value from the sub-£20m bargain bin.Assuming the top 3 from the Championship go up (they're the strongest by some distance) that will leave the following available for purchase alongside Fellows: - Rigg (AM) Sunderland - Van Ewijk (RB) Coventry - Doak (RW) Boro / loan RS - Hackney (CM) Boro - Ivanovic (Striker) Millwall - Sainz (LW) Norwich - Doyle (CB) Norwich / loan CIty - Kolli (LW) QPR There may even be fans who would still be keen on "clearly better than DCL" Adebayo (5 in 39) from struggling Luton. Danny O'Neill 44 Posted 21/04/2025 at 19:31:27 Interesting you mention Lewis-Potter Robert. When Mark and I were mingling with the Brenford supporters in a nearby pub (Mark knows the name, I'm rubbish), I had to ask them who their left midfielder was as he really caught the eye that evening.
