Tim Iroegbunam has finally returned to first-team training after an absence that extends back to last October when he suffered a foot injury.
He is nearing a return to action and joined the senior squad for drills at the club’s Finch Farm training ground this week.
The 21-year-old did well get through the gruelling pre-season training region devised by former manager, Sean Dyche. He started the first four Premier League games of the season, but was limited to appearances from the subs bench in three of the next four games before his availability was progressively undermined by injuries in September and early October.
Iroegbunam was finally diagnosed with a stress fracture in his foot that has kept him sidelined for the past 3 months, with this weekend's trip to Brighton being the 15th Premier League game he has missed.
James Garner was hit with a back injury around the same time and he too is approaching a return to the first-team squad. Garner returned to training last week and David Moyes said the midfielder could be given playing time with the U21s before rejoining with the first-team squad for matchday preparations.
Another midfielder returning from long-term injury is Everton Academy product Stan Mills. The 21-year-old scored on his return to action for Everton U21s last Friday, his first game after just over a year out with a bad knee injury sustained on loan with Oxford United last January.
Mills has shown some impressive skills and the next test for him will be to impress David Moyes sufficiently to earn a chance to show what he can do in the first team, assuming he does not go out on loan again for the rest of the season.

What was it Napoleon said? "Give me Lucky generals".
Garner can play either midfield or very ably at right back, both areas we need help.
Tim looked like he could become a useful player in the position currently held by Doucoure. (As does young Armstrong).
With Chermiti, who impressed preseason, it gives us cover, and in some cases improvements, on what we have been seeing.
This doesn't mean we can be complacent in the transfer market. But it does mean we don't have to make panic signings. We still need some pace and any quality additions are welcome. But add McNeil to the mix (who also gives cover at left wing back?) and suddenly it feels like we have a squad.

Garner and McNeil fit straight back in when ready, and suddenly we have options to rotate and substitute, something we have really missed.
I hope that Daveys in game management is a step up from Sean, we will see soon enough.
If we can improve player fitness and reduce injuries these guys alone could be enough to secure our prem future, and we might see the permanent signing of Mangala and perhaps Lindstrom in the summer.

The elephant in the room for me is still striker. Dom had scored three goals this season. And hes injury prone. If I was Moyes I wouldnt let Thelwell even consider a new signing (unless a deal that was too good to turn down came along…) until we had a striker in the bag. Goals win games. Add a Watkins or a Chris wood to this squad and wed be pushing for Europe no question.

Two back injuries in three seasons does not augur well for a lad still in his early 20's. It could be a risk to think he would be a mainstay next season.

Good to see players coming back and just at the right time.
With a signing or two, the run-in could be interesting. Every match is important, however Leicester is massive. Win that I think we can look up a bit more.
Tony, it's a difficult art. Ronaldo and Rooney to a degree had it to a tee, the former with his own technique.
Also, a lot of teams now have a player lying down behind the wall as they cottoned on to the free kick taker going low and under the wall as it jumped.

I would like to see Tim in Doucoure's role as I think he is an exciting player.
Garner will be a Moyes favourite for sure with his application and flexibility.
A couple of signings added and we could do well and not have to look over our shoulder at relegation.

Younger players need to be rotated to prevent burnout and reoccurring injuries.
Hopefully Tim can come back and I agree, he looked our best player but his stamina was tested after 60-plus minutes. That will increase as his body gets used to playing more regularly. If he adds goals to his game, Tim can become our new Tim!
Garner's record of back injuries leads me to put in the 'handle with care' category. We would probably sell when we can as it's clearly a weakness that I don't think he will overcome. Not writing off his career, just a liability we can't afford.
Mangala should be made permanent. He replaces Gana when he leaves or retires. Also frees up another foreign loan slot for this window.

Doucouré and Gana struggle after 60 mins (see the Spurs game); both of them are better in possession than Doucouré, and Tim offers something no other central midfield player offers – he carries the ball Forward.
Where we didn't really have legs to bring on in the centre of the park against Spurs, these two returning give us opportunities to, be it as starting players or from the bench.
Garner's versatility will be useful as a starter or from the bench. Tim starts for me when fit over Doucoure. If McNeil gets back then we go
Pickford
O'Brien Tarkowski Branthwaite Mykolenko
Lindstrøm Gana Mangala Iroegbunam
McNeil Ndiaye
Calvert-Lewin
You can rotate Gana or Mangala with Garner; you can bring on Doucouré who does offer a good press and physicality when needed.
Options are good. Who'd have thought we may not be able to know 5 days before who will start??

Dave A. I think we have to say a guy who's managed nearly 700 Premier League games does know what he's doing.
Yes, all football decisions are subjective and we all have our opinions. I'd say he's trying to surround himself with people whose judgement he trusts. At this precarious time, it could be a good call, or he could take a gamble on people he's not familiar with.
What would you do if your job depends on relying on others' judgment as much as your own? What you know? Or the unknown?
23 Posted 23/01/2025 at 19:57:25
I would not be surprised to see him 4th or 5th in line for those 2 central midfield spots for Moyes and if thats the case then he would be far better served by a loan to the championship to iron out a few of those kinks and hopefully come back ready to step up to 1st or 2nd choice.
24 Posted 23/01/2025 at 20:20:59
Moyes being Moyes, I don't see him starting over any of the more experienced players. I can see Garner replacing Doucoure. For all his hard running, Doucoure offers little else.
Garner is a bit of a jack of all trades and does the hard graft plus more ability on the ball. Be interesting how he uses McNeil, in the middle or wide left.
25 Posted 23/01/2025 at 20:52:58
The inability to substitute Gueye and Mangala when we're asking so much more of them is going to cost us points (they're actually moving up the pitch behind the attackers now).
Get back on the grass boys.

I have more faith in Moyes than any of our last 4 managers.
Misguided? Who knows?
29 Posted 23/01/2025 at 23:37:15
Garner will float around several positions, 3 of which involve the physio lounge. Sorry but he's no Premier League right-back but does a job and can be a good passer given space and options.
I'd also like to see Ndiaye being given more licence to roam, but more importantly, rest. He can't play every game and, without him and McNeil, we look out of ideas.
30 Posted 24/01/2025 at 10:01:46
Garner would be wasted at right back, we also have Paterson, Young, Coleman, and now OBrien who can play there!
Hopefully in a week or two we will see a better bench which will help us to see out games or claw our way back in to them, very concerned that there is still no news on McNeill.
Like some others (but by no means all), Im starting to feel more secure with Moyes back at the helm.

Competitive match, high intensity drill on crossing and finishing?
Careful now. Down with that sort of thing and get back to defensive drills.
