Stoke City 1 - 0 Everton
Another step toward Premier League readiness as the Blues step out tonight for a runout against Stoke City at the bet365 Stadium before they head off to Germany.
We have been promised our first sight of Hayden Hackney in the Blue shirt of Everton... will David Moyes come through with that?
Jarrad Branthwaite is not part of Everton’s matchday squad for tonight’s pre-season friendly at Stoke City as part of his planned reintegration into the squad following the hamstring injury he sustained towards the end of last season.
The centre-back played the first half at Bolton Wanderers on Saturday and, as scheduled, will now continue full training at Finch Farm this week ahead of being involved in the Blues’ next friendly against Hamburger SV at Volksparkstadion on Saturday.
First Half
Dewsbury-Hall got things going, with a passback for a long hoof from Travers. Hackney showed some quick interpassing in the first forward move but crossed too close to the keeper. A ball to Beto's feet required him to turn and he was easily closed down.
Mykolenko forced the first corner, Tyrique George lashing a screamer from 30 yards, a foot outside the angle! Much more lively start than the previous two games...
George did well to intercept a clearance but too long to do anything with it before playing it too far in front of Dibling. Tarkowski was easily beaten and Travers was fortunate the shot hit his leg and away for a corner, Stoke having a decent spell amid some ragged defending by Everton as they kept being pushed back into their own half.
Dewsbury-Hall and Beto battled through the middle and finally got it out to George who somehow contrived to pass it over the goal line. Rohl clipped in a decent low cross but it went out for a throw.
A better move involving Dewsbury-Hall, George and Armstrong ended in a goal kick to Stoke, who were happy to exploit a disorganised Everton defence, Travers forced into a diving save.
Everton failed to break out effectively and Stoke put them under the cosh somewhat, with a number of half-chances, before they played it behind.
Dibling had a chance to beat his man but just couldn't do it. He was trying to get involved in the attack but Stoke were back quickly.
Everton continued to play it forward, eventually winning a corner that Armstrong took, headed behind by a defender. Another good delivery, again out for a corner from the other side. Great delivery from Dewsbury-Hall but a foul called on the Stoke keeper.
George was fouled but Dewsbury-Hall's delivery was punched away by the keeper. Dibling had another chance to run from deep with the ball but was far too easily dispossessed. He had a chance to play a through-ball but did not put enough pace on the pass.
Dewsbury-Hall and George worked it well but the ball forward to Beto was just a fraction too far ahead and the keeper was out smartly to snuff out the danger. Dibling again had a chance to create something but he didn't.
George was next to miss a great forward pass for Dewsbury-Hall and the play simply wasn't slick enough to go anywhere. Rohl pulled down a great cross-field pass but Dibling again, with a chance to make something, was immediately closed down. Then he misplaced a simple pass and the build-up collapsed.
More simple Stoke pressure, Mykolenko beaten and a perfect opportunity tipped up onto the bar by Travers. The corner was cleared and George looked to break forward, passing to Beto but he stalled and turned instead of going for goal and then passed it behind George. Hackney dropped way too deep to really influence the play.
Second Half
Hackney off for Iroegbunam, the only Everton change, as the whole Stoke team were switched.
A terrible sequence ensued, in which Everton just could not play it out from the back, without Hackney. A Stoke snapshot from 25 yards flew just over Travers and the bar.
Stoke kept at it and won a corner. Tarkowski blocked a shot but Everton just could not break out even when Armstrong was fouled. His wide crossfield pass beat Rohl.
Everton were slow with the ball until Dibling drove forward, then played in Dewsbury-Hall whose shot was deflected behind.
Beto tried to drive forward but was body-checked. Nothing came of the free-kick. A really good build-up by Stoke ended up in a goal from a fair way out, a brilliant curler with Keane's attempted block probably not helping Travers.
Wholesale changes for Everton on the hour mark.
O'Brien lost the ball in defence, and Stoke really should have had a second, winning a corner. They kept pressing the Everton defence, King parrying a soft shot out for a corner.
Alcaraz made a nice drive in the channel but Aznou could not cross it. Graham replaced Dewsbury-Hall with 20 minutes left. But it was Stoke who again almost scored a second, a great strike across goal flew inches wide with King well beaten.
Graham tried to run at Stoke but just gave the ball away. Graham and Aznou weren't quite linking up properly down the left. Alcaraz had his feet whipped away from under him.
Barry played a promising ball to Graham but he was easily knocked off the ball. Aznou finally got a good ball in to Barry but he failed to shoot on sight.
Barry was clipped in the dee and Alcaraz set up to take it but drove it into the wall.
Everton again struggled to get forward until Rohl was fouled. McNeil put the ball in the right but it was cleared.
McNeil and Barry contrived to drive forward in the last minute, winning a corner that McNeil sent beyond the far post, O'Brien up well to head onto the bar.
King had to save a strong shot after that, before the final corner of the game for Everton.
If the first half was ultimately poor, the second half was thoroughly disjointed from an Everton perspective.
Line-up:
Everton: Travers (60' King), Röhl, Tarkowski (60' O'Brien), Keane, Mykolenko (60' Aznou), Armstrong (86' Campbell), Hackney (46' Iroegbunam), Dibling (60' McNeil), Dewsbury-Hall, (70' Graham), George (60' Alcaraz), Beto (60' Barry)
Subs not Used: G Pickford, Tamen, Finney, Foster.

I don't even think Pickford has claimed the Number 1 shirt has he?

Don't think he has, the muppet.
9 Posted 28/07/2026 at 18:55:30
Looks to me he is prepping Tarkowski and Keane partnership for the first game.
10 Posted 28/07/2026 at 19:00:10
Play him at the weekend.

George playing well, as is Dewsbury-Hall, but it's Travers we have to thank for not being behind.
18 Posted 28/07/2026 at 20:20:19
We miss the tackling of Garner in midfield.
19 Posted 28/07/2026 at 20:20:54
Looks a player.
20 Posted 28/07/2026 at 20:23:16
Darn it, my stream on beIN keeps switching to a Bayern Munich game. Kane just scored a pen.

Should really be gunning on rightabout now, given the chance to actually play.
24 Posted 28/07/2026 at 20:28:49
Half-time now.
25 Posted 28/07/2026 at 20:28:49
26 Posted 28/07/2026 at 20:34:41
Cos we're getting sweet FA at the end of this season and end up stuck with him for what? 4 years!
27 Posted 28/07/2026 at 20:38:33
I seem to remember reading that he's more of a natural attacking central midfielder anyway, but Saints put him out there on the right wing cos it was the easiest place to get him used to playing in the first team.
28 Posted 28/07/2026 at 20:40:29
Pre-season pace though, but Armstrong has never looked out of place in any game I've watched him. We just need someone capable of putting the ball in the net.
29 Posted 28/07/2026 at 20:40:48
Not disinterested... just not enough drive, confidence, or belief in his own ability.
If there was anything there, Moyes has obviously crushed, squeezed and destroyed it.
What an incredible waste.
30 Posted 28/07/2026 at 20:40:50
Beto is miles off the pace of the game.
31 Posted 28/07/2026 at 20:50:04
All the youthful brilliance he showed for Saints... oh, wait.
All the compliments from his veteran mates at his performance and work rate in training... oh, wait.
How his captains came to his defense after Moyes said he had to get his finger out... oh, wait.
All Moyes' fault. OK.
32 Posted 28/07/2026 at 20:50:42
Alcaraz does not have a 'place' in our team.
33 Posted 28/07/2026 at 20:55:12
We still need an attack-minded midfielder who is another option from Dewsbury-Hall. I'm just saying that might be a better route for Dibling than out wide.
34 Posted 28/07/2026 at 21:00:04
35 Posted 28/07/2026 at 21:00:18
36 Posted 28/07/2026 at 21:05:19
Mykolenko, George, Dewsbury-Hall all looking no one closing down. No leaders in the team.
37 Posted 28/07/2026 at 21:08:29
If goals were removed from footy, I reckon we'd be one of the best teams in the whole world.
38 Posted 28/07/2026 at 21:18:16
39 Posted 28/07/2026 at 21:28:55
This is shameful.
40 Posted 28/07/2026 at 21:35:22
Did we have a shot on goal?
41 Posted 28/07/2026 at 21:36:06
We are in trouble.
42 Posted 28/07/2026 at 21:37:08
Rohl head and shoulders, wonder if he could play in midfield?
Thankfully, Jarrad should be fully fit after Saturday, we need the dinosaurs and Mykolenko out of that defence, and either play Patterson or replace him... with a right-back.
43 Posted 28/07/2026 at 21:37:08
44 Posted 28/07/2026 at 21:38:04
People worrying about a right-back when we've got the two worst strikers in the Premier League! Just two efforts on goal and their goalie didn't have a shot to save, for fuck's sake!
45 Posted 28/07/2026 at 21:39:24
Dire, it's not just down to the striker either, creativity was zero. Armstrong, Alcaraz, McNeil, Dibling, all bereft of creating anything for the lumps up top.
46 Posted 28/07/2026 at 21:48:50
We are so dysfunctional that you almost feel sorry for Moyes, thankfully he ain't getting the players he wants, won't get a new contract, and is tasked with keeping our heads above the water until they pick a manager to fit with their model.
We are in limbo...
47 Posted 28/07/2026 at 21:50:21
I think maybe Aznou should start the next game.
Having said that, Mykolenko wasn't to blame for the ineptitude of the offense which failed again, like they did at Bolton.
48 Posted 28/07/2026 at 21:52:11
49 Posted 28/07/2026 at 21:55:14
Three games into the friendlies and we already look lost. But don't worry though, Moyes will get it sorted out.
Four goals against Dundee (not United), no goals since. Yep, we definitely look ready for a good season. With our beloved leader Moyes leading the charge...
50 Posted 28/07/2026 at 21:56:50
I've been saying for a while, we need about eight decent players; this squad will get us relegated.
51 Posted 28/07/2026 at 21:57:52
It's okay saying pre-season etc, it looks dire and worrying.
52 Posted 28/07/2026 at 22:01:18
The owners should have been very concerned with the last 7 matches of last season.
53 Posted 28/07/2026 at 22:07:26
Sounded miserable... and heaven knows we're miserable now.
54 Posted 28/07/2026 at 22:13:43
55 Posted 28/07/2026 at 22:13:44
That was it for me.
56 Posted 28/07/2026 at 22:14:30
57 Posted 28/07/2026 at 22:14:48
An abject display... just exactly the same as the arse end of last season.
Moyes must go before it's too late.
58 Posted 28/07/2026 at 22:18:06
Ipswich Town
Coventry City

60 Posted 28/07/2026 at 22:20:27
61 Posted 28/07/2026 at 22:23:05
I didn't see anything that stood out personally. Alcaraz was busy, that's all... but you could see loads of times players making runs never to be seen... shocking.
We haven't got a player who can see a pass, only passes backwards. It was fucking awful. Good night!
62 Posted 28/07/2026 at 22:42:49
Who the Fuck would buy it ? :-)
63 Posted 28/07/2026 at 23:10:27
Hahahaha
It appears to me that Dibling needs no help, in that.
We should loan him back to Southampton this season. He's only 20. Let's see if a "homesickness" cure will do the boy some good.
64 Posted 28/07/2026 at 23:29:26
It may work. Or they may just laugh in our faces and say no thanks, caveat emptor.
65 Posted 28/07/2026 at 23:31:28
And we are also without all our players that went to the World Cup.
66 Posted 28/07/2026 at 23:32:38
67 Posted 28/07/2026 at 23:36:00
We can only hope... or else, we will struggle. Moyes should call the owners out on transfers.
68 Posted 28/07/2026 at 23:44:32
Moyes will play O'Brien at right-back in the first Premier League game.
69 Posted 28/07/2026 at 23:45:52
Overall, a pretty shit show.
70 Posted 28/07/2026 at 00:21:19
I'd like Rohl to work at right-back, but it doesn't, he doesn't tackle and in the first half, the lad he was up against destroyed him, passing out he looks comfortable but he's no right-back.
Hackney and Armstrong looked weak, didn't work, maybe fitness an issue for Hackney but Armstrong certainly can't replace Gana, he's nowhere near ready to be that level.
George was about the brightest spark but if we start with George and Dibling (or McNeil, Rohl or Alcaraz), we have seriously gone backwards from Grealish and Ndiaye starting last season.
Barry and Beto are still both shite, and Tarkowski and Keane aren't up to getting us anywhere near Europe.
Call it pre-season all we like, you can only polish a turd so much and neither Moyes nor that squad looks up to it.
If Ndiaye goes, we'd best hope to get a fortune to put it into that squad as it's piss poor.
Them owners have a lot to answer for too as it's just like it was under Kenwright.
71 Posted 28/07/2026 at 00:32:35
It's sad to be supporting Everon these days for those who know how far we've fallen.
72 Posted 28/07/2026 at 00:42:39
Courtesy of the decades-long gross negligence and greed in our boardroom we've had to endure hopeless pre-seasons in preparation for no chance-of-a-trophy dozens of seasons.
Friedkin is showing himself to be as bogus as any of his predecessors when it comes to providing entertaining football for his core base as a viable football club, namely, us fans!
Without us in his stadium, his Everton investment all but collapses, maybe except for rugby games.
Maybe we should think about that, as soon as possible.
73 Posted 28/07/2026 at 00:47:48
I mean they had the cheek to raise our season ticket prices but cap matchday ticket prices meaning fans can pay less to choose when they feel like going over fans who paid for all tickets upfront.
Once the season tickets were sold, they have the bulk of the money anyway.
74 Posted 29/07/2026 at 01:27:07
Until that changes us lot are victim to an eternally broken record of mediocrity on the pitch, as per now.
75 Posted 29/07/2026 at 03:07:15
He looks like an athlete but he's not very good so since he can't get into the team in his own role by Moyes's logic “stick him at right-back -- can't be worse than O'Brien.”
How about sign a right-back? Crazy notion I know.
76 Posted 29/07/2026 at 03:15:33
Stu, can you explain to me what exactly you thought was 'innovative' and 'experimental' at Stoke today?
'And we are also without all our players that went to the World Cup'.
So, that would be Pickford and Patterson. Erm 'all'?
77 Posted 29/07/2026 at 03:44:51
Does Stu know of others?
78 Posted 29/07/2026 at 03:50:30
I think this might be someone who wants to see the brighter side of things doing a few steps too far...
79 Posted 29/07/2026 at 05:09:39
80 Posted 29/07/2026 at 05:30:19
Was there supposed to be a penalty shootout in the advent of a draw? Optimism never dies no matter how often it is killed off.
Have Scotland appointed a manager yet?
81 Posted 29/07/2026 at 05:46:34
8 goals and 9 assists came from Ndiaye and Grealish last season. That is with Jack only playing half a season and Illy's form dropping off after Afcon.
Those goals and assists are what we need to replace if they are not here next season.
Two more reality checks:
1) Let's stop pretendng that Rohl and O'Brien are the answer at right-back, or that Mykolenko is a good left-back.
2) We need to accept that Beto and Barry will never be good enough to lead our attack.
Time to deliver, recruitment and analytics team!
82 Posted 29/07/2026 at 07:41:35
The club are happy to persist with Mykolenko at left-back, first choice, a player signed by the doomed Rafael Benitez, for fuck's sake. Two striking options, neither are good enough to elevate the team to the top half. No right-back fit for purpose in the modern era.
New season, same shit. Definitely correct with the title of this report, much work is absolutely definitely needed.
83 Posted 29/07/2026 at 07:43:45
84 Posted 29/07/2026 at 08:07:13
I for one am grateful to have witnessed the success over the 80s. Being from that generation, I don't believe I'll ever see Everton win another league title in my lifetime and possibly even silverware.
85 Posted 29/07/2026 at 08:10:33
I guess my attempted sarcasm was maybe too subtle.
86 Posted 29/07/2026 at 08:10:37
When the silent Friedkins paid themselves a dividend, it was met with silence or statements like selling the ladies team is still going to help us with regards PSR .
Whatever anyone says, it is 100% clear that the people that matter are not aligned when it comes to recruitment, which can only mean one thing.
I had something similar with Stu the other day when he said he thought I might have been deliberately provocative!
87 Posted 29/07/2026 at 08:13:44
We'll be scrabbling around on deadline day trying to fill positions weve had all summer to fill, we won't be ready for the beginning of the season and we'll get off to a shit start and be playing catch up.
Its the Everton thing to do, its absolutely pathetic,… so much for our crack recruitment team
88 Posted 29/07/2026 at 08:14:28
89 Posted 29/07/2026 at 08:16:42
90 Posted 29/07/2026 at 08:17:31
One thing you have to give the horrible red bastards. They don't accept mediocrity.
91 Posted 29/07/2026 at 08:52:34
Davie and his coaches set up the sides in such a manner that we didn't have one shot on target over the two games. Worrying times.
92 Posted 29/07/2026 at 08:58:51
93 Posted 29/07/2026 at 09:01:45
I just don't see where any of the inspiration is coming from.
94 Posted 29/07/2026 at 09:06:29
Maybe we should ditch Z-Cars and run out to " Living in the Past". Let's face, it a flautist standing on one leg would be an improvement on our attacking options.
95 Posted 29/07/2026 at 09:12:06
We need this recruitment team with their super analytics to start doing something soon. They have done nothing so far.
96 Posted 29/07/2026 at 09:38:31
Andrew @94, watching the 2 games, I think we are in serious trouble. I think we need a paddle quick as we're right up that creek.
97 Posted 29/07/2026 at 09:38:58
They all drove down to St Andrews to watch the women's team just this week.
98 Posted 29/07/2026 at 10:00:24
No shots to mention in the last 2 games — Moyes chose these tactics. Rohl at right-back, this is to prepare us all for no right-back signings.
He has to play OBrien at centre-back — he knows we are all screaming to give the lad a shot. The pattern here is the same old shite — all down to Moyes.
99 Posted 29/07/2026 at 10:04:22
Yes Stu throws them in now and again. He had one in last week about Grealish — nobody touched it — like a mousetrap with no cheese on it.
100 Posted 29/07/2026 at 10:06:29
We have the foundation of the team that did well up to the last 7 games of last season so there's no need to panic just yet. Branthwaite, Ndiaye and Garner weren't playing and we are missing Grealish and Gueye also.
Don't get me wrong: we do need 3 or 4 above average new players if the club has any ambition at all.
It's too soon to start giving away those season tickets just yet though.
101 Posted 29/07/2026 at 10:21:59
We had a pretty mediocre team this time last year, and it's looking likely that out of that we are going to lose Ndiaye, Gueye and Grealish. We also have Keane and Tarkowski on a noticeable decline since that time. I really don't think Hayden Hackney will redress that current imbalance.
If I was Moyes, I would be seriously concerned. And I'm pretty sure if we don't start getting some players in this week, he's going to start moaning. Problem is, I don't think much of the recruitment team, and I don't think the Friedkins are inclined to spend much again.
102 Posted 29/07/2026 at 10:37:45
St Dan the Absent -- you're a fraud and so are your money-grabbing recruitment team. Sell up or fuckin do something. Starting with this awful manager and his cronies.
103 Posted 29/07/2026 at 10:38:04
Meanwhile, we're after Delap who is not good enough for Chelsea, but good enough for us. You couldn't make it up!
104 Posted 29/07/2026 at 10:45:20
105 Posted 29/07/2026 at 10:53:52
We need another centre back too, with as you say an ageing pair in Keane and Tarks, plus we have Branthwaite who you can't rely on his fitness.
Grealish would be very handy to have, whether that's out of the question I don't know.
106 Posted 29/07/2026 at 11:44:57
I just hope Moyes pisses off.
107 Posted 29/07/2026 at 12:40:35
We did, mate, but nothing on target.
108 Posted 29/07/2026 at 13:12:19
Rohl will become a top midfielder, sadly not under Moyes.
109 Posted 29/07/2026 at 13:13:22
Every year pre season is crap. We don't sign players, we don't sort the issues from last season and we waste the first three games before the panic on transfer deadline day.
I remember Moyes saying one year on the eve of the season that we werent ready to win Premier League games. Well that gave me hope and optimism leading into the season. They just suck the life out of you.
We are losing Ndiye, if we want Grealish, get him now. Garner is injured so we've lost the centre midfield pairing from last season. No right back has been signed (surprised!) and we await a centre forward whilst relying on the two we have who we all know are not good enough.
How is McNeil still here?
Just for once give me some hope that it is going to be better and perhaps even good to watch rather than the insipid dross of last night and the oh so predictable last eight games of the season just gone.
110 Posted 29/07/2026 at 15:20:54
Have we ever started the season ready?
Moyes the mediocrity millionaire doing his usual.
111 Posted 29/07/2026 at 15:30:24
Make the decision on Grealish, don't let this distract all window. If we have a right-back in mind, go do it.
Get some experienced character in the midfield of the park who youngsters can play alongside.
Add another winger, ship McNeil out. Let Travers go, sort an experienced back-up keeper.
Come on, get on with it -- the clock is ticking and what we have is not fit for Premier League purpose.
112 Posted 29/07/2026 at 15:31:10
113 Posted 29/07/2026 at 16:10:45
They just suck the life out of you.
Perfect description of an Evertonian
114 Posted 29/07/2026 at 16:47:16
TFG don't fill me with a lot of confidence in turning things around. No use saying Ndiaye is not for sale -- the days of clubs having the power is long gone. Apparently he and his agent have agreed terms with his new Saudi club.
I don't know how our PSR position is but, with little being spent, I guess it's a case of sell to buy. Seems TFG are still pursuing the 'buy young' policy but I'm not sure that is a successful approach.
Looks like Chelsea are prepared to sell Delap and reports are we are still interested in signing him. So he will be another youngster to join Dibling, Hackney, Rohl, George and Barry. Although Hansen was ridiculed for saying about the class of 92 at Man Utd "You win nothing with kids," by and large, he is correct.

I agree with Ian (@112) above -- they need to sort out the Ndiaye and Grealish issues quickly. If McNeil is also sold, then we need to sign one more winger -- Nakamura was linked to us, but we would probably need one more experienced option.
I don't know why we didn't go in for Bowen? An additional striker -- Troy Parrott? A right-back - Djed Spence and Wan-Bissaka are still available
I agree with Ian, an experienced midfielder to mentor young guns like Hackney, Iroegbunam, Armstrong, Rohl -- someone like Kovacic from Man City?
If this happens along with some smart selling and getting a few on loan, we should be able to compete with the middle pack. Otherwise, I am afraid that this season will be a hard slog.

We need to sign a goal-scoring centre-forward, a right-back, a left-back, and an attacking midfielder.

Travers kept us in the match in the first half yesterday.

Newcastle's owners are the richest on the planet but they still must sell their biggest and best assets as their £335m turnover can't afford them.
What chance do we have with a sub £200m turnover? FSG reported a £196.7m turnover in early 2026.
Even the likes of Forest, Brighton & the relegated West Ham generate larger incomes than we do.
We won't see much improvement until the accounts released in early 2027 as these will reflect our first season in HDS probably around £245m. Again though this falls short of Brighton and is equal to the likes of Palace.
For me there's no point in spouting transfer budgets as they're very etheral... as an example, if we sign a £45m player over 5 years we're actually spending just over £10m if there's a £50k weekly wage.
Yes, there'll be a limit we can go to overall but there's no reall point in trying to determine what that is exactly.
There's simply no point in wasting air discussing the likes of Grealish as there is no way he'll sign for us without a massive signing on fee of around £10m and around 75% of his Man City wage... call it £21m overall and an ongoing £10m+ a year for the length of the contract.
Do we really wnat to spend £50m+ on him over the term of his Contract?
Dibling was he worth it? For me in terms of the contract combined with his age & wage, yes probably. An intial outlay of around £8.75m in this day & age for homegrown is good business.
In two years we can sell him for £20m and show a £3m profit. Age & nationality will command that alone.
BUT... in order to this we need to play expressive, positive football and grab a few headlines. We wont under Moyes and this will, interms of player valuation and commercial turnover, negatively effect the Club overall.
Football today is all about perception, it's why as Club on the whole we are dismissed as an also ran rather than a big club in transition.
We MUST stop bringing in those players in the twilight of their carreer and those who spend too much time on the treatment table. No more Jack Grealish's or Ashley Young's.
We need to keep making a statement. Keeping Branthwaite last summer for instance. The same now for Ndaiye would be similar so too would be to change the central defensive pecking order - have O'Brien & Branthwaite and 1st choice. Show the media and other clubs we're moving on.

He's not really a Number 8 is he? More like a Number 6... but that is taken by James Tarkowski.
Probably something daft, like 27.
