At the BBC Sport website, Matthew Hobbs documents the remarkable turnaround from the brink of relegation when David Moyes took over, to the new era and squad rebuild for life at Bramley-Moore Dock.
"Everton have signed nine players at a net cost of £97M (based on initial fees), their highest net outlay in a summer transfer window and more than they had spent over the previous seven seasons combined (£71M). The figure of £97M far surpasses any season in the club's Premier League history, with the potential for further arrivals in the January window.
“It is a significant turnaround for a club which have twice been subject to points deductions for breaching profit and sustainability regulations (PSR) and only escaped relegation on the final day of the season two years ago.”
The report goes on to explain why Everton can spend money again after years of penury; the potential financial bonus of increased income from the new Hill Dickinson Stadium; the significance of signing Jack Grealish, that brings more leadership into the dressing room; and the possibility tha Everton could win their first trophy since 1995.
All is reinforced with quotes from Leon Osman, who does a great job projecting Everton whenever he is a pundit on TV or radio.

I know its early days but our new owners seem to understand what's needed to produce a successful team. Obviously until we start getting into Europe then we will still have to be careful in how we spend the money, but the club seems to be in a better position than its been in for years. There is an excitement around the fans going the game, obviously going into a World class stadium has given everybody a buzz, but the last 3 games has seen us play the sort of attacking football we havent seen in a long time.

In total, 74 charges have been brought against Chelsea FC. The conduct that is the subject of the charges ranges from 2009 to 2022 and primarily relates to events which occurred between the 2010/11 to 2015/16 playing seasons.
Chelsea FC has until 19 September 2025 to respond.

Signing of youngsters, tapping up, undisclosed payments, etc etc.
Token gesture fine and a 6-month ban on appeal for transfers, when they've a squad of 200 players, it'll make no difference.
No sporting advantage no doubt. Points off for us, but nowt for these.

For decades I am beyond certain that we paid way above stupid prices for dire / average at best for a plethora of players on nonsensely high contracts. (There has to have been a scam involved somewhere along the line because the crooked dead one was in charge throughout the process of buying and selling for the majority.)
Now that he and the awful directors of football we have saddled ourselves with, have disappeared, finally. And fucking finally some quality has come in through the door.
Occasionally but hens teeth rarely, we had an exceptional player, but generally not spread throughout the team.
With Grealish we have surpassed that. Well Pickford too, to be fair. With Ndiaye and Branthwaite, there is proof of further excellence. The addition of Dewsbury-Hall has also dragged us to another level. Beto will now get service and score more.
With a few more untested new players plus getting rid of failures, and the delightful magic we are able to create, its no wonder heads have swivelled in our direction.
Momentum must be maintained. Gone is the chronic concern of where we could win. This is arguably, likely to be the best team assembled (with hopefully more to come) since before that festering shit soiled our boardroom.
Good times ahead.

We have had a few short spells where we spent decent money during the Premier League era (I think Ryan H provided a link saying Kanchelskis would have cost £125m in today's market) but really nothing like the clubs actually winning things.
Moshiri era 2016 to 2021 was a false dawn due to utter incompetence unfortunately - and even in that period we were still lagging behind those spending to win.
We're at the start now of something completely new - apparently competent owners and some money to spend. But we still had only the 13th highest expenditure in the Premier League this summer - after an unprecedented period of negative investment.
We need a few more seasons yet of £100m (+) spending to catch up in quality - and even then it's likely between 5 and 8 other clubs already ahead of us will spend more.
Although all sorts of mistakes have been made by those running the footballing side - the real reason why we've been rubbish for the Premier League era is because we've been poor in relative terms. It's as simple as that

I've lost touch but is it even possible for us to carry on spending £100Mn per year?
10 Posted 11/09/2025 at 14:36:57
Can we do it year on year?
I expect so, yes. Other clubs are doing it so why not us?
In a few years we should be part of the (at least fairly) rich football establishment.

Villa look like they're bumping up against PSR limits, and we now have 13,000 bigger capacity revenue than them – if they don't go far in Europe this season, I can see us overtaking them in terms of spend quite quickly. Same with Forest – I can't see Postecoglu talking them to the same heights as last season, so Demis Roussos won't be able to keep overspending much longer.
They're the two I reckon we could elbow out of the way this season. We'll see with Villa this weekend. I'm going for 3-2 to us.
12 Posted 11/09/2025 at 14:46:36
I think it's perfectly feasible that we'll be able to spend £100M per year going forward.
We'll have a much better idea however when the accounts for this financial year are in and we can see exactly how much new stadium ticket sales are generating, along with sponsorship deals and the impact of lower interest payments.
The club will already have much of this information to hand and I'm optimistic our spend this window augers well for the future.
13 Posted 11/09/2025 at 15:04:00
That's what football club mismanagement looks like at the tail end of the cycle.
With the age of the players we've recruited, any big net spend should now be improving the squad rather than just spending to maintain as we were previously doing.
14 Posted 11/09/2025 at 15:06:58
Eight months later and the club have turned a significant corner, avoiding the drop by 23 points, moving to the state-of-the-art Hill Dickinson Stadium and bringing in nine players in a summer of record recruitment.
No side have picked up more points than Everton since the start of May, and they sit fifth in the Premier League.

Says old man!
"And a brilliant cut inside by our new £100m from Barcelona, passed to £150m and sadly his agent lops it over the "Upper Kentucky" bar."
Ever felt game discussion not about "our game"?

Though I have two concerns. How are we going to keep everybody happy? And how have we missed another opportunity to beef up the full back cover which is increasingly one of the most important positions in the team?
19 Posted 11/09/2025 at 16:36:56
No surprise then with Moyes back that things are looking up when it comes to player purchases.

I dont know much about PSR, but it must have surely changed if we could soon be spending this amount every season?
After digesting this news then alls Ive got to say is that race to be the first team to win the title in three different centuries starts now🤞 #LONGEVITY
24 Posted 11/09/2025 at 19:52:33
If the players bought with the spend have on average 3-year contracts then thanks to amortisation it will only mean a charge to the accounts of £33M per annum for each of the next 3 years.
Of course there will also be the wages involved but these will at least in part be mitigated by the players who left last season.
Added to that PSR will be based on a new 3-year cycle and I'd expect the new year being added in represents an improvement on the year dropping off.
PSR hasn't changed but there are sill grounds to be optimistic.

26 Posted 11/09/2025 at 21:29:11
Moyes said something similar... just not with the same upbeat optimism. Moyes's statement was along the lines of the cups offering the best option for success.
Certainly hope both of you are correct.

We are 6/4 favs on Sat. by the way.
Going forward we look a much better team than of late but I still have my doubts with some aspects of our defence.
Grealish will be targeted more than ever after all the praise he has had but he probably has the talent to overcome it. I hope so he is the key.

It's why I think the exuberant predictions of Top 8 and European football are more than a bit premature.
30 Posted 12/09/2025 at 06:22:37
Love it.
31 Posted 12/09/2025 at 08:23:26
On the other hand it would be great for morale and our supporters if we won one of the cups — but have to struggle with those extra games.
I understand many supporters would love us to get into Europe and go travelling to these games but I think it would be to the detriment of the longer term plan of the club.

34 Posted 12/09/2025 at 08:47:43
It only sounds a lot because our spending switched off just at the point everyone elses spending went up to a new level.
Idiotic spending and club management 2016 to 2021 knackered us up for PSR. Coming out of that with a new stadium and better commercials should enable us to spend normally (ie £100m plus). Like I say, it just isnt a lot of money.

It would be great for morale and our supporters if we won a cup?
Whats happened to you Dave? We will go to Anfield next Saturday lunchtime and the first song that is gonna be rammed down the throats of the Evertonians, is you havent won a trophy for thirty fuckin years🤦♂️
What about your three grandsons, who havent seen Everton, win a cup? They must have seventy years between them of watching us win the sum total of absolute zero?
Have a little think Dave, and let me know if you still want me to get you tomorrow🤷♂️
This is becoming a very good thread after the madness created by Everton Ladies, on the other thread, and gives us both the natural concerns, and also even some positivity!
Thanks to Robert and Brendan, (finally!) for explaining things but, I liked Ernies explanation of what club mismanagement looks like at the tail end of the cycle, as we enter a positive new era.
Positivity with a hint of caution, so that people dont become disillusioned when we meet a few bumps in the road, but theres nothing wrong with aiming high, especially if we can make Bramley Moore, a fortress🤞
Its a really tough game tomorrow, the type of game that should help us to see where we really are just now because although they havent started great, Aston Villa, were a very good team last season
38 Posted 12/09/2025 at 09:23:58
Other clubs have started to manage net spend by trading players who were never intended for the first team - City and the RS in particular - to create extra kitty for first team transfers.
39 Posted 12/09/2025 at 09:38:36
Well Phil as you are not with us I will say it for you - I think we will finish “sevenish”.
40 Posted 12/09/2025 at 09:55:28
Ive just googled it and we actually came eleventh, the first three times we won the cup, so Ill take the same right now!
Dont worry about those extra European games Dave, just enjoy the moment, and make sure you find the lift tomorrow!
41 Posted 12/09/2025 at 09:58:39
When was the last time we said that before an early season PL match?
42 Posted 12/09/2025 at 10:18:04
Tony (40), Funny you should mention the lift, did I ever tell you about the ex RAF pilot I knew from the Goblin?
Well anyway I bumped into him yesterday in town and yes you've guessed it —-he's got his own helicopter, think he wizzed it from somewhere, and he's dropping me off, literally, at the ground tomorrow—oh fuck forgot to tell him we've moved from Goodison— might still need you tomorrow!

44 Posted 12/09/2025 at 10:59:22
Clubs will have a bit more freedom now that PSR has gone. The one to watch is wage percentage.
For the Premier League 85% of turnover is the current trial and for European qualification it's been set at 70% for over a year now - the latter is what's nobbled Villa.
With the likes of Man City, the RS etc only spending around 50/60% on wages stadium size & commercial revenue for the rest of us must improve if we're to compete.

Two more summers with the same sort of approach could see a really good squad starting to peak in about 3 to 5 years. By that stage we can reasonably expect to be part of the rich (ish) establishment (like Spurs for example) rather than a pauper on the outside looking in. There will be richer clubs sure - but we should be able to have Champions League seasons every so often and Europe more often than not. Cup wins too!
