Ivan Toney has Premier League experince but this season he's still playing in the Saudi Pro League for Al-Ahli, yet some think he could return to play for Everton

One suggestion is that 29-year-old Ivan Toney could return to the Premier League for Everton in January to solve the perennial striker problem. But that would no doubt require a substantial transfer fee as well as a very high personal salary for the player who last played for Brentford in the Premier League, scoring 4 goals in 17 appearances before securing a 4-year deal with the Saudis running through 2028.

This dubious rumour takes a number of different shapes depending what outlet you read. And in some quarters, Toney's name is still toxic after he was suspended from playing any football for 8 months by the FA after breaching betting rules.

It seems highly unlikely Everton would want to have anything to do with him.

Probably clickbait (hope not) but we have been loosely linked with Ivan Toney, who is currently with Saudi side Al Hilal.

Wages may be a problem, but I think he would not turn down a chance to return to Premier League football!

Do a swap with Beto... lol. 😂

Just seen a very speculative article linking us with a January move for Ivan Toney - with the prospect of service from Grealish being exactly the sort of thing that might help entice Toney back to the Premier League, with half a season to stake a claim for a World Cup squad place.

Right now that sounds incredibly appealing to me -- although Toney is supposedly a Red, and also might prefer a reunion with Thomas Frank at Spurs -- so it's probably unlikely.

Or at least tell us where you're reading this shite.

Thanks!

If you Google Ivan Toney Everton, the only story from a reputable site that comes up is the New York Times from 2022 with Toney alleging Everton fans racially abused his family.

That apart one of these nonsense sites speculates WHU want to sign him despite his £525k weekly wage, and from the it seems we came into the mix from the i Paper where in response to that rumor, their writer suggested that if he wants to leave Saudi he would be better advised to join Everton instead.

So in essence. It's all fiction.

Doh! It's like predictive text whenever I post -- it just assumes I wrote it!

Well, I did put the words into the ToffeeWeb piece that shows up on your screen... but I was looking for was what that speculative article was Andrew saw?

And Derek's post was from a couple of days before, talking about Toney. Oh yea, one was in the i Paper gossip, now I remember.

It's a nothing story coming from the i Paper.

The writer is merely suggesting that Everton and Toney would be a good fit if the latter was minded to return to the Premier League in January.

Problem is, Toney is earning up to c £500k per week, mostly tax free.

If he returned to the UK before 2 years, his tax bill will be huge.

Could we?

Brazil forward Endrick is open to leaving Real Madrid in January, with the 19-year-old's representatives working on a possible loan move...

Surely, Everton are overdue to end this dreadful/ luckless run of strikers that we have had -- Niasse, Tosun, Maupay, Rodon, Keane, Onyekuru, Chermiti, Beto, (not including Barnry yet in this list).

The only half-decent centre-forward we have had after Lukaku is Calvert-Lewin, and maybe we can count Richarlison as well.

I am longing for the day when we get a couple of 20-goal-per-season strikers who do it consistently over at least 2 seasons.

I look jealously at the likes of Newcastle, Brentford, Bournemouth, Crystal Palace, even the new lad at Burnley, who all seem to find strikers who know where the back of the net is. (Sigh …….)

Michael, in my own defence, I did say probably clickbait (hope not). So therefore, I arrest my case M'Lud ! :-)

This isn't clickbait, but I would like to get Gabriel Jesus from the Arse, doesn't seem to be playing a lot. Very possibly injury prone, but Jesus with a broken leg is surely better than Beto?

Ndiaye to Arsenal I read somewhere today. Yeah for $100M maybe.

Toney to Everton on half a mil a week!

Sean Dyche manager of Nottingham Forest.

You have a lot of faith in Jesus, Derek.

The players you mention Ajay show the benefits of (a) spending very big sums or (b) showing patience. The guy at Burnley (Anthony?) has started well but is probably just having a purple patch in team structure that suits him.

Ajay@11... Calvert-Lewin, seriously? According to your logic, he's behind Richarlison.

West Ham are sniffing around Toney (yes, they can offer London), but Everton cannot ignore him becoming available.

"Everton cannot ignore him becoming available."

Oh, I think, hope, yearn that we can stay well away from this gambling addict, considering his history.

Just imagine you're Tony Kay watching him don the Royal Blue shirt? Well, it would probably never happen because he wouldn't watch.

Ajay, how many clubs do you know who have ever had "a couple of 20-goal-per-season strikers who do it consistently over at least 2 seasons."??

When you dream, you dream big, I say that for ya!

Michael, gambling addiction is a mental health disorder, for which Toney has been treated. One assumes that his current employer, in a Muslim nation that bans gambling, made certain his treatment had been successful before signing him. One assumes that his next employer would do the same.

Frankly I'm more put off by his £411k/week salary than by his unsavoury past.

I don’t think Toney even has an unsavoury past. He made a stupid mistake but hurt no-one but himself.

If Toney wants to get in the England team, he has to return from where he is. If he does, then it will be to a Premier League side.

Moyes is on record as saying he likes the player. A few other clubs will be interested too but he needs regular starts; he would get that at Everton.

Wages? They said that was a problem for Jack, before he signed for us. Clickbait? Possibly, but I believe there's a lot of substance that it could possibly materialize.

Robert Tressell
23 Posted 23/10/2025 at 16:41:23
You might be right, Martin. I am sure Moyes does like Toney because he's a good player. But Moyes does not just have a free reign to buy whoever he likes...

I expect Moyes would have rather bought Ekitike than Barry this summer... etc, etc.

If Toney was so desperate about England, then leaving for Saudi was an odd choice. Maybe it will happen. But it's a lot more complicated than the temporary Grealish deal.

If we get Toney, I'll dance the jig!! He would be perfect… I genuinely think we are a quality Number 9 away from being in Europe and almost unbeatable.

Our defence is stout and the 3 we have behind our centre-forward are among the best outfits in the league… Ndiaye, Dewsbury-Hall and Grealish are a centre-forward's dream and any good forward worth their salt will be on high alert regarding our current predicament.

I would take 7th place and Europa Conference League footy all day…. Toney gets stuck in and can be a tad narky, he would have The Hill bouncing!… Also another addition to Low Socks FC!

No chance of him joining as he is earning a fortune over there and he needs to pay his bookie.

On another note, Chermiti is being strongly criticised on the BBC for his performance last night, maybe selling him was the right move

By the time he was taken off deep into the second half, his goalscoring record at Rangers, Everton and Sporting stood at 3 goals in more than 25 hours of football.

More chance of getting Richarlison in January, depending on what Spurs want.

Getting Richarlison in January would be a major achievement.
His energy and work rate qualify him as a “Moyes type of player”.

Hope he gets a big cheer from those at Hill Dickinson at the weekend -- one that breaks the current decibel record.

Is it really worth the expense to get a short-term player who will take minutes from Barry (who will hopefully improve in the second half of the season, like he did at Villarreal)?

Where would Toney get us? Maybe 10th instead of 13th? If this were a long-term move or the difference between Europe or not, then I could see the sense in it... but not so sure.

Bob Parrington
30 Posted 25/10/2025 at 02:55:59
Sam, I understand where you're coming from on this but, not that I'm stating his signing would be the right solution.

Is it not true that, sometimes, an isolated short-term solution can help reach a long-term goal.

Toney's goal-scoring performance for Brentford was less than those by his successors, namely Wissa, Mbueno and Thiago, all signed for way less fees than Toney's current price and mega-salary.

Everton that.

When you think about the young players we have been linked to over the last few years, our targeting hasn't been the issue — more our ability to get the deal done.

The deals for Kudus and Minteh were done before two curveballs derailed them — Man Utd offered Ajax £84M for Anthony and Calvert-Lewin thought Newcastle should offer him a massive salary.

Wasn't Ekitike someone we were interested in at one point?

Ray Jacques

He will be another Rondon, we tried that once before.
Sean Kearns
36 Posted 02/11/2025 at 01:43:05
Any 2 of Toney, Richarlison, Gabriel Jesus will do me.

Also, where is the next young forward out of our academy? Why don't we have a 17- to 20-year-old who is free of charge and ready to make a name for himself?

Make no bones about it, Moyes is only playing Beto because he is being told to keep his value up. In the hope he scores a few goals and somebody wants him in January. If we bench Beto, we will wipe £10M off his value.

Back in the day, Moyes stuck Cahill up front when we had shite forwards. He would do the same with Alcaraz now but he's being told to play Beto, I fear.

Rome wasn't built in a day, though... and all that. A right-back and two centre-forwards is the next priority… Ndiaye is our best player with a fooking 6'-6” centre-back teaming up with him on the right!!

Imagine how good Skilli is with a proper elite right-back overlapping and making more room for him.
