Everton need to win some big games between now and the end of the season as they still remain in the hunt for a European spot. The Blues are currently eighth in the league table with 37 points, separated from Liverpool in sixth by five points.

However, at the same time, they are also six points ahead of Leeds United in 15th place, which just goes to show the fierce mid-table competition in the Premier League this season.

“The level of the games, the teams. We played Wolves here a few weeks ago and got a draw, we played Leeds and got a draw, even Bournemouth, who we lost to,” David Moyes said in the pre-match press conference before facing Manchester United.

“People are thinking you turn up and you roll these teams over. The games are so, so difficult.

“By the way, there are one or two teams that might blow all the teams away in the league, there might be. But, in the main, most of the teams have been very competitive with very little between them – the games are very close and pretty unpredictable at the moment.”

While Everton have racked up some impressive wins away from home, their form on home soil has led them down. The Toffees are yet to win at Hill Dickinson Stadium since their 3-0 victory over Nottingham Forest in early December.

Most recently, they witnessed Bournemouth come back from a goal down to secure a 2-1 win. The Blues have also been beaten by Arsenal and Brentford at home in recent months.

In order to rally behind the players and boost the atmosphere at the waterfront venue, Everton supporter group, the 1878s, have planned a grand display of flags and banners before kick-off against Manchester United.

Supporting their efforts, Moyes added, “It will be hugely helpful and will be hugely appreciated. Anything we can get at the moment to help us is helpful because at home has felt difficult for whatever reason that might be.

“I think there are a lot of generalisations you can make that I’ve probably said in many interviews with it being a new home, it’s never that easy with new surroundings and other teams enjoying it, all those things.

“The people who make football clubs are the supporters and inside the stadium, they’re the ones who make a big difference and if they can help make a difference on Monday night, that will be very much appreciated.”

I don't like the phrase 'got a draw'.

It sounds like we achieved something. We didn't lose.

If you get the team playing on the front foot, David, then that will be very much appreciated in return.

Perhaps it's getting a point for a draw that makes it an achievement of sorts, Paul.

But in the mind of Moyes, we have that point at the start of the game, so I suppose the achievement is not losing it!

Almost makes me yearn for those American sports of yours where a draw just doesn't exist.

Not mine, MK. Not fond of Yanksport, except for College Basketball and watching baseball at the ground.

If I had a nickel for every time over here that I have been mocked and scolded for the concept of a draw, I would be able to buy out Saint Daniel the Absent.

Those weird-sounding statements do make it sound like for him a draw is an achievement. We scored first against Wolves and second against Leeds. So, in Moyes's unenterprising world we did get a draw against Leeds. A bit of gung-ho would be nice.

As I've said on another thread - Everton should view draws as 2 points lost, not an achievement.

I want a manager that goes for the win no matter who the fuckers in the other half are.

Not quite what Moyes seems to be saying Mark. But no surprise there.

Perhaps he will surprise us on Monday, Mark, with a medium press.

Drives me nuts when I see teams around us - and Leeds - give it a real go.

Erm, PH, go back 3 months and check how Leeds are catching us up and don't forget that they were the better team at the Dock.

Why are you up so early on a Sunday morning anyway mate? 9 o’clock mass, putting the goose in the oven?

When it comes to their recent struggles by the Mersey waterfront, Kilbane said [In the Echo]:

“I don't think anyone can probably put their finger on why. The only thing I would look at is the way that David Moyes has always been.

“With his organisation and the tactical set-up of the side, the way that he does things, going away from home, under Moyes, it's going to be easier for Everton to get a result because they can play a counter-attacking way. When you are at home, you have to be more open.

“You've got to try and go for the wins more often than try and sit in matches. So that may be the only thing.

“They’ve only got four wins at home this year and recently the form hasn’t been great at home. They’ve been way better and more open and just a better watch overall playing away.

“When you’re not part of something, when you’re not watching it, you don’t know what it is but that would be my biggest take of it all, it’s how David Moyes sets up the side and how open the team are in comparison to playing away from home. That’s maybe something to do with it.

“Of course, the knock-on effect is sides going to a new stadium, enjoying the atmosphere, enjoying playing at the place, that could come into it as well. Everton, probably historically, even maybe going back the last few years when things aren’t going quite well, one or two of the players maybe shell a little bit when they start to face a bit more criticism with 40-odd thousand on their back.

“Ultimately, Everton are having a good season overall, but they’ll probably want to win three or four, five of their last six or seven home games before the end of the season.”

Very one dimensional tactics last night. Piling on top of keeper corner after corner looked ludicrous and had no effect as he caught everything.

If that's the best Moyes can come up with tactically at a high profile home game, it says a lot about his lack of guile, effectiveness, and nouse.

And although Garner as usual was magnificent, he would have probably served us better in midfield and let full-back Patterson, play at full-back.

Dewsbury-Hall was pretty decent but his final ball or pass let him down all night. Ndiaye only showed brief flashes. Gueye should only come as a sub when players are knackered. We need to play younger midfield options.

To sum up -- despite plaudits for Moyes from all the pundits, I don't think he's getting anything like the best from players at his disposal, especially at home.
