Scott Phelan experienced his first defeat as Everton Women’s manager after his side lost 2-1 to Liverpool in the fifth round of the Women’s FA Cup.

Everton were able to halve the deficit after Jennifer Falk’s own goal midway through the second half, but first-half goals from Mia Enderby and substitute Beata Olsson helped the hosts march into the next round.

At St Helens Stadium, Phelan named an unchanged XI for the fourth game in a row. He’d have hoped to secure an upper hand in the contest given that the Toffees put four past their city rivals in the Women’s Super League fixture between them earlier this season.

However, a cagey start to the game ensued and the deadlock was broken by Enderby when she headed in Ceri Holland's cross for her fourth goal in six matches.

Enderby collided with Everton goalkeeper Courtney Brosnan during this moment and had to leave the pitch on a stretcher.

Her replacement Olsson got the second goal for the hosts shortly before the break. Holland turned provider once again as her delivery from the left flank was turned to Olsson’s path by Ruby Mace’s header.

Brosnan made two great saves off Denise O'Sullivan and Martha Thomas in quick succession to keep Everton in the game

Inma Gabarro tested Liverpool goalkeeper Jennifer Falk with a low shot. Just minutes later, Everton were able to halve the deficit after Aurora Galli’s shot took multiple rebounds off the woodwork and Falk before entering the net.

Despite pushing for an equaliser, with Hikaru Kitagawa testing Falk in the final 10 minutes, Scott Phelan’s side were unable to make a comeback.
