It's only taken 2 months but the Confederation of African Football have (Caf) overturned the result in the African Cup of Nations final after the Senegalese players walked off the pitch.

It means that Idrissa Nana Gueye and Iliman Ndiaye are no longer Champions of Africa and will have to hand their medals back.

Apparently Morocco now "awarded" the Afcon...

After the shambles of the final.

Regulations of the Africa Cup of Nations:

Article 82 states that if a team refuses to play or leaves the ground before the end of regulation time without the referee's authorisation, it will be considered the loser and eliminated from the competition.

Article 84 complements this provision, stating that any team that violates Article 82 will be permanently eliminated and will lose the match 3-0.

Senegal are not the 'champions'. The rules for once were correctly applied. Take note the North Wharf Road lads and lasses.

Senegal knew the rules and the cheats/shithouses who walked off because they didn't agree with the ref fucked up.

Congratulations to Morocco the champions and best team over the tournament.

Perhaps Idrissa and Illy will now have the dignity to hand their false medals over.

Cheer up, sleepy Jean
Oh, what can it mean
To a daydream believer
And a homecoming queen?

Get real, PH, FFS!!!

It's sport, mate. It's not sorted by rule books.

You get real.

Sorry PH. Rules are created, you abide by the rules for the sport. So, what happens on the pitch trumps the rules.

Feck me, PH.

Comedy gold! I sincerely hope that the next time we have players who qualify for this that we respectfully refuse permission to join.

Tell them where to put their medals and their cup.

Just reeks of more corruption in football.

I hope our guys put on their best Scouse accents and tell them "you want my medal, try taking it from me"

I am absolutely made up. I said on here more than a few times that Senegal should be punished for that comedy walk off up to and including losing the title.

The image of the Finch Farm guard of honour for the returning heroes Gueye and Ndiaye was for me embarrassing.

Hey, it's perfectly fine to walk off the pitch if we disagree with the ref's decision. We should all do it. I mean we do it for guttersnipe vile racist and homophobic abuse, so why not if we don't think that was a penalty?

Paul, it's all well and good quoting the rules you read on Wikipedia, but why didn't the referee and AFCON itself read Wikipedia there and then to find out what the rules are and disqualify Senagal immediately?

Why wait 2 months for something so obvious?

The officials in charge of the game allowed it to continue, so the result should stand.

The whole tournament was corrupt from the off. The referee tried his best to get the desired result in the night and that didn't happen so now we have this debacle.

Paul is probably right about punishing Senegal for their actions on the night but FIFA need to at least pretend they know anything about football and take CAF to account for their role in all of this but fluffing Donald Trump is far too important for them right now.

Is it time to kick international football into touch?

Hopefully this won’t end up with Gueye and Ndiaye kicking the crap out of Aznou at Finch Farm!

Paul, I'm not sure whether those respective articles are replicated precisely across all competitions but I'll assume that they are in some format.

In your opinion, should teams that walk off for racist/other abuse also automatically forfeit the game 3-0?

Sometimes it is better to not enforce the law but the spirit of the sport. Playing under such a bent ref made the actions of Senegal fairly justifiable to my mind, regardless of what the law says.

Now that a precedent has been set -- not only to go back 2 months and change both the winner and loser of a competition but invent a new scoreline to go with the new outcome, should we expect to see VAR go back to 2016 and change the results to stop Leicester City winning the Premier League?

In 1981 classic 'Escape to Victory', the team of Allied PoWs gave serious consideration to staging a walk-out at half-time in order to protest the awful standard of referee (and continue the war) but Michael Caine had read up on the articles and convinced the team to return to the pitch as he didn't want to forfeit the game.

The unfortunate consequence of this was that the players had to escape through the front gate after the final whistle and none of them had time to take a shower.

Surely this decision should have been made in days -- not 2 months!

I don't know what the rules say about walking off the pitch in protest, but the organisers must know the rules... so why has it taken so long???

Matt,

Have they named the scorers in that 3-0 win?

I had a fiver on Brahim Diaz to score the first goal.

There are rules about walking off and for fans running on to get the game abandoned if your not liking how its going.

IMO only; was there a whiff of engineering a possible senario... and did Senegal fall for it?

Not so much pushing the envelope...like playing for penalties... more like sending the envelope right round the world.

The tournament was rigged for Morocco to win it anyway. I don't blame Senegal for walking off.

More teams should do that in a totally corrupt sport.

There are these rules so why didn't the game end when Senegal left the pitch as one of the many officials should have know this rule.

Football is turning into a complete joke

No, it wasn't, Paul @22 -- unless, of course, you have unequivocal evidence of this, but you don't mate.

Senegal were pretty fecking stupid to walk off whether you agree with it or not because the consequences for doing so were clearly set out in Afcon rules.
