England 0 - 1 Japan

Jordan Pickford is reinstated in goal for England but he was beaten by Mitoma in the 23rd minute at Wembley tonight against Japan.

Lots of absentees in the expected England line-up but there was no second start for James Garner despite effusive praise from Thomas Tuchel for his performance against Uruguay.

It was a nice quick Japanese move following a midfield turnover that saw simple yet rapid and incisive movement of the ball across the ragged back line of the retreating England defence who were cut apart with Mitoma having an easy job to fire past a befuddled Jordan Pickford.

James Garner was introduced as a substitute for Mainoo after 70 minutes but could do little to change the course of the game against a lively and quick Japan team.

The white kits look nice, nicer than the footy.

Japan get back quickly and move the ball nicely and quickly. What the fuck is Guehi doing as skipper? What about the lad between the sticks?

Japan almost got a second there before Garner came on.

How on earth are England second favourites for the World Cup?

They are definitely one of my favourite international teams Japan, Paul, because I think there is so much to enjoy about the way they play football.

Hard work is a given, they play close, they break quick, but I just wish they would leave a man on the halfway line and go and catch England on the counter!

What a miss from Rodgers.

They are a breath of fresh air Tony.

I always wonder why we do not have a man on our side of the half-way line when opponents have corners, two for Arsenal.

He's had a poor 2026 Michael, the full '90 might do him some good.

Elliott-A man of the match.

What do Everton and England have in common?

Striker crisis if Kane really is an issue.

Paul #4 Not being cynical, but Merson was on Sky yesterday and said Foden (City sub) and Palmer would make any team in the world, and how the pundits keep talking up Saka, overrated in my opinion, has done nothing in the last 4 mths, listening to Sky they've nothing to worry about until the semifinal?

When I was a football coach at a school in north London, ( woodside park had a massive Japanese population ) I used to always have Japanese boys in my teams, great work ethic, skillful, respectful, listened to tactics and ideas, followed instructions and were generally a coach s ideal pupil.

I hope that I don't sound like a typecaster/stereotyper Tony, but respect seems to be a large part of Japanese culture.

Christy, those three were golden boys two years ago but, along with Bellingham, they have become major issues. I don't think that Tuchel knows what his best midfield is or if there is any sign of a settled midfield. Rice would be my only certainty at the moment - might leave a door ajar for Garner.

I think it’s imperative that you should always try and keep a man up at all times Paul, for a dinosaur like myself!

That makes a lot of sense to me Tony, because the thing that always strikes me when I watch Japan play, is the amount of discipline, which just looks like it comes very naturally?

I don’t know how true it is Paul, but I was told that one of the reasons that they are so respectful stems from the atrocities that were inflicted on their country, towards the end Second World War?

No human being should inflict such horror on another. I might have been told wrong.

I mean, it means that one or two of Gabriel, Saliba, and Timber cannot be in our box for corners. They'll need two to mark Beto; well, one for Barry.

When it comes to respectful bowing Tony, that developed 1,500 years ago. Initially related to spread of Buddhism from China/Korea if memory serves and then became more general.

Italy out of the World Cup. Bosnia wins penalty shootout. Final penalty by an American born in Wisconsin.

Italy misses their third straight World Cup. Expect their government to fall by the weekend.

Italy knocked out of the World Cup again, on penalties. Tears in Little Italy's all over the US and Canada.

Shite last penalty to win it too.

Donnarumma absolutely boxed the Yank kid's pen. Right through his hands. Delicious.

Never really noticed before, but Donnarumma has really weird hair.

Luigi Riva will be turning in his grave. Giovanni Rivera must be horrified with head in hands.

I hadn't realised that it's now three world cups in a row that the Italians have missed out on. What would Mussolini have done?

On the subject of Everton and England, I was at the England Under-21s game at Carrow Road, Tuesday night.

Tyler Dibling started, and played ¾ of the game. He did pretty well, but not great, in that he didn't dominate the game or look a key player, in the way that Jobe Bellingham and Archie Gray definitely did.

He lost possession a few times.

He did have a couple of eye-catching mazy dribbles, the second of which was fantastic, and set up a second-half goal.

I have massive reservations about Tutchel and his team selections. We have known for a very long time that Kane is our best striker, but in friendlies since Tutchel took over he has started Kane and so is it surprising that we have found ourselves without a creditable back up.

He has got himself in such a terrible mess that last night he played Palmer and Foden as number 10s. But I will argue we have got a credible back up to Harry Kane in Ivan Toney who has not been given a chance by Tutchel. Before Toney moved to Saudi he was a much sought after striker by many clubs, but seems because he has gone to Saudi Tutchel completely ignores him, yet that wasn't the case for Henderson who also went to Saudi.

So he forced himself into using DCL and Solankie neither are in the same class as Toney. Despite playing very little football for his club it seems that Tutchel is determined to risk taking Stones to the World Cup. I worry that if Kane is injured for any of the group games then we wont go much further. He seems to not to be to enamoured with Bellingham, and has practically ruled out TAA, while maybe not the best one on one defender he can unlock defences. For me at this stage Tutchel has left too many unanswered questions, he doesn't know his best team or what formation h ewants to play.

I agree, Tuchel is just winging it -- much like those before him.
The striker situation is a real problem and Kane is way ahead of anyone else.

Solanke is weak and Calvert-Lewin not much better. Tuchel has many talented players to choose from but, without Kane, they have little or no chance at the World Cup.

The 'False 9' plan failed miserably last night.

Palmer and Foden are way off the pace (injury and lack of game time).
Rogers flits in and out of games, you sometimes wonder where he's gone.
Rashford has not improved since his early Man Utd forays.
Dewsbury-Hall must be wondering how he didn't get a look in with this lot.

On the face of it, we can't play without a Number 9; if Kane gets injured, I can't see a Plan B.
