  • 2' 1-0 Proctor  A mistake from Gerrard at the heart of the Everton defence, he dived in with a sliding tackle, missed the ball, Proctor with the ball at his feet, takes on Turner, he puts the ball pst him as he came out.

Subs not used: Turner, Hughes, Pascucci, Wynne.  Scorers: Chadwick (23'), Osman (84')
Yellow Cards:
Red Cards:   Ref: Mr M Messias  Att: 195

Liverpool Echo: Leon Osman was again Everton Reserves' striking hero, grabbing a late goal to secure all three points in a 2- 1 win at Middlesbrough.  In difficult weather conditions at Billingham Synthonia's ground, the visitors, who included David Unsworth, Franny Jeffers and Nick Chadwick, deserved the points.

Osman went close after 10 minutes and then Chadwick, back in the side after injury, forced Turnbull to save.  The home side threatened on a couple of occasions but Steve Simonsen was alert for the Blues.  Turnbull thought he had thwarted Chadwick on 23 minutes only for Laurence Wilson to put the ball back into the penalty area.  The striker made sure at the second attempt to put the Blues ahead.

Jeffers should have made it two but first his shot went wide and then he saw Taylor clear.  Middlesbrough fought their way back into the game on 63 minutes, Gary Smith steering an unstoppable shot past Simonsen.  After the equaliser the home side threatened the Everton goal on more than one occasion but the Blues made 'Boro pay for their missed chances when Leon Osman fired home near the end.

 Everton 2 - 2 Aston Villa

Reserves/U-21 Match No 13
Tuesday 18 November 2003
Haig Avenue, Southport

Everton: Turner; Wynne, Wilson, Gerrard, Clarke; Alexandersson, Osman, Li Tie; Chadwick (88' Pascucci), Jeffers, A Moogan.
Subs not used: Gallagher, Hughes, Fox, Barry.  Scorers: Ridgewell (og:10'), Jeffers (16')
Yellow Cards:
Clarke  Red Cards:   Ref: Mr M Hayward; Att: 437

Liverpool Echo: The Reserves came close to ending Aston Villa's unbeaten record, only to be denied by substitute Peter Hynes's equaliser.  Everton were given an early shock by the league leaders when, after just 53 seconds, Luke Moore caused the Blues defence problems with his skill and when the ball eventually fell to Stephen Cooke he volleyed home past Iain Turner.

The Blues were soon level though.  Francis Jeffers hassled Liam Ridgewell and forced the Villa defender to lob his own keeper.  Everton went from strength to strength and were in front on 16 minutes.  Jeffers latched onto Niclas Alexandersson's cross and the Blues striker held off a defender to rifle his shot home.

Villa worked hard to get in the game and might have done so on 33 minutes when Luke Moore's cross just eluded his brother Stefan.  Everton were continuing to cause their own problems and should have increased their lead but Anthony Gerrard's header was straight at Stefan Postma.

The visitors were a real threat after the break and went close with efforts from both the Moore brothers and Steven Foley.  Peter Hynes replaced Jamie Ward on 68 minutes and within two minutes had levelled.  A corner from the left was cleared by Everton but only to Hynes, who blasted his shot past Turner.

Everton responded positively and went close to regaining the lead on 72 minutes when Leon Osman shot just over from inside the box. Francis Jeffers looked odds on to score but Postma was brave to deny the Everton striker with his legs.

Villa might have done better on 84 minutes when Ridgewell come close to making up for his earlier own goal, but dragged his shot wide.

Steve Milne:  This game has carried over from last season.  Normally these ties are in the middle of winter, and it makes a nice change to watch the game in the warmth.  So, with a fairly strong line-up, here are the best bits:

  • Within 10 mins, young Turner has made two outstanding saves.
  • 33'  First real attempt at goal (apart from a free kick just outside the box, and a corner); Alexandersson from inside the box, right side of the area, a weak shot.
  • 40'  0-1  Ferguson.  At last something to write, cross in from the left over the top, Alexandersson put the ball back in to the six-yard area, Dunc on hand to roll the ball over the line.
  • 45'  0-2  Chadwick.  B Moogan with the ball from midfield, Chadwick raced on, out paced the last man, looked up then picked his spot, good goal.

Half time: Southport 0 - 2 Everton

  • 45' off Schumacher, Chadwick, on A Moogan, Pascucci (Italian trialist)
  • 63'  B Moogan, sort of a shot 30 yards out, drifted well wide of the post.

The match was played as an Academy Under-18 fixture in preparation for the 2004-05 season when the FA Premier Youth Academy format changes.  There will be no more Under-17 or Under-19 teams just one Academy Under-18 team playing in a competitive league.  With the new format, three over-age Under-19 players are allowed in the team, plus the goalkeeper.

The game centred around the final 20 minutes of the first half.  After a bright start by Everton, Liverpool came close to scoring with a free header from seven yards out that went wide.  Everton then began to take command.  After 25 minutes Paul Hopkins forced a good save with a low drive.  From the following corner, Everton deservedly took the lead when 15-year-old Victor Anichebe climbed highest to head the ball into the bottom corner of the Liverpool net.

Four minutes later Liverpool missed a penalty, given away by Patrick Boyle's handball.  Despite sending Sean Lake the wrong way from the spot, Liverpool's Mannix hit the post.  It was almost 2-0 for Everton on 36 minutes when a miscued clearance struck the head of Anichebe but this time his effort landed inches wide with the Liverpool goalie stranded.

Liverpool equalised after they had missed yet another penalty three minutes before the break.  Kelly was brought down by Mark Hughes.  Mannix missed for the second time when Lake saved well but he put away the rebound to make it 1-1.

Both sides had great chances to win the game in the second half.  Everton went close when substitute James Vaughan headed wide then Liverpool did the same, glancing a header just wide from close range.

Liverpool had a real chance to win it 10 minutes from time but they were quickly closed down by an excellent last ditch challenge from Mark Hughes.  A minute later, Paul Hopkins went so close with a brilliant overhead scissor kick effort that landed just wide of Willis' right hand post.  Liverpool looked likely to win with four minutes remaining their effort was superbly saved by Lake.

Two minutes later a mistake almost proved costly for Liverpool but Vaughan's stinging drive was saved after a delightful backheel from Hopkins.  Then Liverpool missed a great chance their striker blazing over the bar from close range when he really should have at least hit the target.

Following a 1-1 draw after normal time, extra-time followed but the match was ultimately decided on penalties.  In the previous two rounds of the competition Liverpool won both times on penalties.  Hopkins missed one early on by Sean Lake guessed right to make two fine saves that kept Everton in it.  But Liverpool eventually won when their keeper Paul Willis saved the ninth? Everton penalty and then scored the winner himself to give Liverpool the Liverpool Senior Cup.

BBC: Everton goalkeeper Richard Wright could be fit for the start of the season after coming through a friendly.  The England international, who underwent knee surgery at the end of last season, hurt his shoulder after falling off a ladder at home and missed virtually all of pre-season training.  But the 25-year-old looked in good shape as a strong Everton XI cruised to victory over League of Wales side Total Network Solutions in the little village of Llansantffraid, just outside Oswestry.

Wright pulled off a couple of good early saves in the Toffees' 3-1 win although he could do little to prevent TNS taking the lead seven minutes before half-time through Jamie Wood's close-range effort.  Jimmy Aggrey then steered the ball past his own keeper to pull Everton back on level terms a minute before the break.  Nick Chadwick added another in the 63rd minute and the impressive Leon Osman rounded off the scoring in the 71st minute to secure a comfortable win.
